| 10602 |  | Obituary- Ward, Mildred Mildred G. Ward ROSSVILLE - Mildred G. Ward, 90, formerly of Wichita, died Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the Rossville Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born September 13,1926, the daughter of Louis and Katherine Pierson Kishko. Mildred worked as an administrative assistant for the State of Kansas Welfare Department for many years. She married Steve Ward, Jr. on September 4,1959 in Falls City, Nebraska. They were divorced. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, two brothers, Wendell Kishko and Wayne Kishko, and a half-brother, Philip Niles. Survivors include ten nieces and nephews and one great niece, Hope Niles. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 5th at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church on the Potawatomi Reservation at Mayetta. Burial will follow in the Shipshee Cemetery. | 10603 |  | Obituary- Ward, Paul Paul E. Ward DELIA - Paul E. Ward, 81, of Delia, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at a Topeka hospital. He was born Dec. 19, 1922, in Fairdealing, Mo., to Lloyd and Iona Allen Ward. He grew up in the Fairdealing community. He served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific and received a Purple Heart. He moved to St. Marys in 1947 and worked for Jones Dehydrator Plant. He then moved to Rossville and worked for Berry Elevator for many years. He moved to the Delia community in 1964, where he farmed. He was a member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville. He married Delores Marney in Holton. She survives. Other survivors include six daughters, Pauletta High, Centertown, Mo., Vicki Rezac, Delia, Mary Morelan, Doniphan, Mo., and Connie Sue Welch, Sandy Rogers, and Debra Cram, all of California, Mo.; four sons, Gary Ward, Delia, Darrell Eastman, Junction City, and Gearold Ward and Robert Ward, both of Rossville; four sisters, Maxine Clark, Van Buren, Mo., Betty Ederer, Poplar Bluff, Mo., Fay Myers, Fairdealing, Mo., and Wanda Medling, Marble Hill, Mo.; four brothers, Lloyd Ward, Fairdealing, Mo., Lyndel Ward, Oxley, Mo., Mitch Ward, Creive Coeur, Mo., and Dale Ward, Philomath, Ore.; an aunt, Ruth Ward, St. Marys; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Evers, in 1973. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Burial will be in Delia Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville. He will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home in St. Marys, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or Jimmie Lillard Post. WARD PASSES AWAY AT GREEN RIVER, WYOMING Samuel Edward Ward, 79, well-known and highly respected citizen of Green River, Wyoming, passed away suddenly at his home there early Wednesday morning. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Ward and his family had lived in Green River since 1926, when he transferred from Evanston, to become a ticket clerk for the railroad there. When he retired from the railroad seven years ago, he was the senior ticket clerk, with a fine reputation for service to the traveling public. Samuel Ward was born March 8, 1876, at Rossville, the son of Fred and Mary Ward. He grew to manhood in this community and he and his wife spent the early part of their married life here. Mr. Ward was the last of six children. During World War I, he entered the service of the Union Pacific railroad, joining the signal department at Evanston. He was also employed by the stores department there before becoming a member of the clerical forces about 1922. In June, 1926, he bid in a Green River job and the family made its home thee from that time on. Service his fellowmen he was for many years active as a member of Mt. Moriah Lodge of the A.F.&A.M and of Mystic chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. He also served as district manager for the Security Benefit Association. Considering his advanced age, he was in good health until the time of his death, and the evening before had been active around his home. On Dc. 22, 1901, he was united in marriage to Nora Heslet at Rossville, and of this union, he is survived by Mrs. Ward; three daughters, Mrs. William (Orlena) Riedl of Laramie, Mrs. Claude (Veta) Twitchell of Green River, and Mrs. Edward (Mary) Lenhart of Rawlins. Also surviving are three grandsons, Gary and Richard Riedl of Laramie and Terry Twitchell of Green River. | |

She was pronounced dead Saturday, Feb. 2, in the emergency room at a local hospital. Dr. Hugh Moore, Shawnee County coroner, said a scarf had been wrapped around the girl’s neck, and it tightened to the point that it cut off her air supply. She had been playing with her family’s dog in her backyard, and the dog had playfully tugged at the scarf. Theresa Marie Ward was born July 24, 1978, at Topeka, the daughter of Robert C. and Mary Pat Stadler Ward. She lived in Silver Lake all her life and attended first grade at Silver Lake Grade School. She attended St. Stanislaus Catholic at Rossville and Northland Christian Church in Topeka. Survivors beside her parents include a brother, Joshua Ward, at home; a sister, Christina Ward, at home; grandparents, James and Joanne Stadler, Silver Lake, and Charles E. and Blanche Ward, Topeka; and great-grandmothers, Mrs. Mary Warner and Mrs. Hilda Ward, both of Topeka. | 10606 |  | Obituary- Ward, Theresa 2 Playful dog kills girl A 6-year-old Silver Lake girl who was found dead in the snow in her backyard Saturday apparently was strangled by the family dog when it playfully tugged at the scarf wrapped around her neck. The girl was identified as Theresa Ward, the daughter of Robert and Mary Ward. Shawnee County sheriff’s detective Rick Hladky, who investigated the death, said Theresa and the family dog, a 70-pound golden retriever, were seen playing in the snow. Minutes later a witness saw the dog dragging the girl by the scarf around the yard. An autopsy Saturday night determined that the girl died when all respiration was cut off. Dr. Hugh Moore, Shawnee County coroner, said a scarf had been wrapped around the girl’s neck and tightened to the point that it cut off her air supply. Family members discovered the girl’s body in the backyard after they realized they hadn’t seen her for 15 minutes. The girl had been playing in the snow and was wearing warm clothing, witnesses at the scene said. Medevac MidAmerica spokesman Steve Miller said the ambulance service was called at 4:46 p.m. and arrived at 4:57 p.m. Medevac also requested the Silver Lake Fire Department, and fire department medics were the first officials at the residence. Theresa had been carried into the house by her father by the time firefighters arrived. Firefighters performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation until Medevac arrived and then the ambulance crew administered stimulants and warmed the girl, but couldn’t get a response, one of the crew said. At the hospital, medical workers discovered bruises around her neck. Parker-Price Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. | |

WARFEL Services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parker-Price Mortuary for Oscar Clempton Warfel, 69, Topeka, who died Sunday, April 13, 1986, at a Topeka hospital. The Rev. Ray Grant officiated. Mr. Warfel worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company before he retired in 1979. He was born March 28, 1917, at Morrell, the son of John and Cora Hall Warfel. He moved to Topeka in 1946. He served in the Army during World War II. Mrs. Warfel was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church and Golden Rule Lodge No. 90, AF&AM, for which he served as worshipful master in 1972. He was a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, Arab Shrine, Arab Shrine Antique Car Club and Helene Chapter No. 210, Order of Easter Star, for which he served as worthy patron in 1966 He also was a member of Trinity Shrine No. 7, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Capitol Court No. 5, Order of Amaranth, Ancient Toltec Rite, and the Sunshine Chapter of the Good Sams Camping Club. He was a past deputy grand master for District NO. 20 of the Grand Lodge of Kansas, AM&AM, and a member of the National Good Sams Camping Club. He was married to Ruth C. Hall May 18, 1940, at Troy. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Kathy McCarty, Maxon, Ill., and Mrs. Sharon French, Rossville; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Whitehead, Mrs. Mary Boltz, and Mrs. Ida Niccum, all of Topeka; and four grandchildren. | 10608 |  | Obituary- Warfel, Ruth Ruth Charlotte Warfel Ruth Charlotte Warfel, 93, Topeka, died Saturday, March 18, 2017, at her home. She was born February 10,1924, in Lincoln^ Nebraska, the daughter of Adrian Lewis and Lottie Marie (Hecht) Hall. Ruth graduated from Hiawatha High School and then worked for Goodyear in Lincoln where she helped line airplanes with rubber so that when a plane was shot the rubber would close the hole. She moved several times. From Lincoln she went to Salt Lake City where her Mother lived. Then they moved to Topeka in order for her husband to go into the service. When in Topeka she worked for Sears and Roebuck in downtown Topeka, and loved working there. She worked in the Men’s Department, Children’s Department, Catalog Department, and Ladies Wear. In 1949, Ruth and Oscar bought their home at 2345 Wayne and she stayed home and raised her family. She graduated from cosmetology school and worked at Manford’s Beauty Salon for eleven years before opening Ruth’s Beauty Salon at Sixth and Washburn. Due to health problems she sold her shop and started traveling with the Good Sams Camping Group. After her husband passed away she went to work at Washburn University in the cafeteria cis a cashier and worked there for 18 years. She was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church; Helena Chapter # 210, Order of the Eastern Star (60 year member); and Trinity Shrine # 7, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Ruth was married to Oscar Warfel on May 18,1940, at Troy, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 13,1986. Surviving are two daughters: Kathy McCarty of Burlingame, and Sharon French (Laird) of Rossville; siblings: Lucille Marie Bentley of Rulo, NE, Margaret Rose Darby of Salt Lake City, UT, Vonia Grace Brooks of St. George, UT, and Glen Arthur Hall of Nevada; five grandchildren: Harry Hammer III of Rossville, Teresa Lowe of Wichita, Nancy Stine (Marty) of Seneca, PA, Shawn French of Topeka, and Charlotte Brunin (Derek) Rossville; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 20, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka, followed by Eastern Star Services conducted by Helena Chapter # 210, OES. | 10610 |  | Obituary- Warner, Mary Mary Schiefelbein Warner Mary Schiefelbein Warner, 94, of Topeka, died on May 28, 2020. She was born Mary Ellen Cobler on November 9, 1925, in Rossville, KS, to Barbara and Walter Cobler. She was the sixth of eleven children and grew up in Topeka. In 1942, she married Sylvester Schiefelbein, the fourth of eleven children. Their big, loving families were always important in their lives and shaped the lives of their own six children. Mary enthusiastically embraced Sylvester’s Roman Catholic faith, which she faithfully practiced her whole life. She and Sylvester were active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and their children attended Sacred Heart School. Mary served as a Eucharistic minister at church and for the homebound. She was a member of the Legion of Mary, Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle #503, and the Altar Society. Sylvester died in 1979. Mary married Loren Dale Warner in 1982. Both Mary and Dale retired from Ohse Meat Company. They enjoyed traveling and attending Dale’s Air Force reunions. Dale died in 1988. Mary was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren, and 61 nieces and nephews. Her family and friends will remember her for her delicious apple pie and her homemade noodles, spread across the kitchen counter to dry, and for the Volga German specialties she learned to make from Sylvester’s mother, Amelia. They will remember her for her hard work, both at home, and in the jobs she took to help support the family. They will also remember her devotion to her mother and Sylvester’s mother, both of whom died on her birthday. They will remember all the times she cared for her sick and dying siblings. They will remember how well she and Sylvester danced waltzes and polkas, played on the dulcimer by Sylvester’s brother Joe at the wedding dances that were an important part of family life. Her children will remember with great love the sacrifices she made for them as they were growing up. They will remember her tremendous will to live, seen in her survival of a major illness when she was 83, and in her determination in the years afterwards to be with her family through the challenges of aging. Mary is survived by her six children: Lyle (Sharon), Richard (Ann), Linda Burghart (Steve), Michael (Steve Klinkerman), Mark (Heidi), and Craig (Carolyn). She is also survived by her brothers Walter Cobler (Nancy), Robert Cobler (Donna), and Fred Rogers (Norma). She will lie in state at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2nd. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 3rd, at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Interment will be at the Rossville Cemetery, Rossville, Kansas. She was born May 23, 1920, in Valencia, Kansas. She was married to Lynn Baldwin June 30, 1939. She was married to 2nd husband Bud Wasser April 22,1972. Both are deceased. Survivors include three sons; Kenneth Baldwin of Bryan TX, Dale Baldwin of DeSoto KS and David Baldwin of Pearland TX; and six grandchildren. | 10612 |  | Obituary- Wasson, W.H. 1 W. H. WASSON, FORMER ROSSVILLE CITIZEN DIED LAST SUNDAY W. H. Wasson, aged 71, a pioneer Kansas citizen, died at his home at 1267 Clay street, Topeka, last Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock after a short illness. Death resulted from complications following an attack of hay fever. Mr. Wasson had been troubled with hay fever during the late summer for several years. When the hay fever season approached, he went to the mountains for relief. He returned from Colorado a week before his death. Then complications developed. Mr. Wasson was born in McMahon county, Tennessee, May 25, 1853. He came to Kansas with his parents in 1855 and settled in Fort Scott. He was educated in the public schools, the Kansas State Normal college, Paola Normal school and Zion college. In 1872 Mr. Wasson began teaching in the public schools of Linn and Bourbon counties. This was the beginning of a brilliant career of 30 years in educational work. During that period he was superintendent of the public schools at Mound City, Fulton, Pratt and Rossville. He taught here for three years. He entered Hesperian Lodge in Rossville in 1898 and for thirteen years after leaving Rossville maintained his membership in the local order and also maintained Rossville as his voting precinct. Mr. Wasson especially excelled in normal institute work and conducted 40 normal institutes in Kansas. He was also author of the book, “A Normal Institute Reader.” Mr. Wasson was city ticket agent of the Rock Island at Topeka from 1894 to 1896 and at the same time he operated a book store and wall paper establishment. From 1903 to 1909 he was manager of the Buckeye Oil & Gas Co. For three years after that he was assistant city assessor for Topeka. After a few years as city auditor he was elected commissioner of finance. He served six years as a member of the Topeka commissioner. When he retired as finance commissioner four years ago, he became a public accountant. Two years ago he became secretary and treasurer of the Reserve Health and Accident Insurance Co. Mr. Wasson was married to Harriet Cordelia Haverly at Fort Scott July 24, 1871. He celebrated his golden wedding anniversary three years ago. Besides his widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. W. L. Jury and Mrs. Louie O’Dell; a son C. H. Wasson, assistant county en¬gineer; three granddaughters, Miss Helen O’Dell, Mrs. Prudy C. Binkley and Mrs. Louie E. Holm; three grandsons, W. Harold Jury, Clyde Wasson, Jr., and William M. Wasson; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Feemster, of Fort Smith and Mrs. Minta Young, Stuttgart, Ark.; and two brothers, G. H. Wasson, Topeka and R. M. Wasson, California. Mr. Wasson was a member of the West Minster Presbyterian church. Topeka Consistory No. 1, Scottish Rite Mason, Topeka Commandery No. 5, Knights Templar, Siloam Lodge No. 225, A. F. & A. M.; I. O. O. | 10613 |  | Obituary- Wasson, W.H. 2 Wasson Is Dead Former City Commissioner Was a Kansas Pioneer. Came to Kansas in 1853 - Settled Near Fort Scott. Following a short illness, W.H. Wasson, 71, Kansas pioneer and member of the Topeka school board, died at his home, 1267 Clay street, at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon. He had been a sufferer from hay fever. Some time ago he went to Colorado for relief, but the altitude troubled him a good deal and a week ago Mrs. Wasson went to Manitou, where he had been staying, and brought Mr. Wasson home. Complications developed rapidly, which resulted fatally. Mr. Wasson was born in McMahon county, Tenn., May 25, 1853. He came to Kansas in 1855 with his parents, who settled in Fort Scott. He was educated in the public schools, Kansas State Normal school and Zion college. In 1872, he began teaching in the public schools of Linn and Bourbon counties. This was the beginning of thirty years of most successful educational work as superintendent of public schools and a teacher of teachers in normal institutes. Was in Railroad Work. He was also a railroad man. From 1894 to 1896 he was city ticket agent of the Rock Island railroad in Topeka. Later he was employed as manager of the Buckeye Oil & Gas company, a position he left to enter city politics. In 1914 he was elected finance committee [ ] holding that position for six years when he retired to become a public accountant. Mr. Wasson was married fifty-three years ago to Harriett Corden [ ] Waverly at Fort Scott on July 24, [ ]. She survives him. Besides his widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. W.L. Jury and Mrs. Louie O'Dell; a son, C.H. Wasson, assistant county engineer; three granddaughters, Miss Helen O'Dell, Mrs. Prudy C. Binkley and Mrs. Louie E. Holm; three grandsons, W. | 10616 |  | Obituary- Wax, Margaret Margaret Wax Margaret Malvina Wax was born at Westmoreland, Kansas, September 29, 1884. She was the daughter of the late James and Ann Reser Kinnett. She departed this life December 31, 1952, at a Topeka hospital, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 2 days. Her parents settled on a farm northwest of Rossville when she was a child, where she grew to womanhood. She affiliated with the Rossville Christian Church. She was united in marriage to Clinton C. Wax. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive: Captain Malvin C. | 10617 |  | Obituary- Wax, William William Wax William Wax, aged 66 years, 3 months and 27 days died last Saturday afternoon at 4:30 after three weeks of serious illness from a complication of diseases that had kept him in poor health for about four years. Mr. Wax was born in Pennsylvania, July 3, 1849, leaving that state while quite young and moving to Illinois. He was a member of an Illinois regiment during the Rebellion and left Illinois about 1878 coming to Rossville and made this neighborhood his home for the past 37 years. In the year 1880 he was married to Elmina Heslet and to them was born six children, Joseph of Pecna, Colo., Mrs. Maude Reichman of Topeka, Clinton of St. Marys, Mrs. Mary VanVleck, Mrs. Anna Lemon and Mrs. Bertha Myers, all of Rossville, with his widow survive him. Mr. Wax united with the M.E. Church in 1800 and remained a consistent and faithful member until his death. The funeral was held Monday, at 1:30 at the M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. All, of Topeka, a former minister here and a personal friend of the family. Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery. | |

He was born July 27, 1891, at Creston, Iowa, the son of John Richie and Ona Moyer Webb. He attended Bethany College, Lindsborg, from 1909 until 1911. Mr. Webb farmed in Hodgeman county and later moved to Dodge City where he was in the insurance business. He was a member of the Kansas house of representatives from 1925 until 1929 and served on the house ways and means committee in 1927 and 1929. He was secretary- treasurer of Farmers National Grain Corportion, Chicago, in 1930 and later was employed by Farmers Home Administration from 1935 until he retired in 1956. He served as presi¬dent of Farmers Cooperative Commission, now Far-Mar-Co, Hutchison, from 1930 to 1937 and was president of Dodge City Cooperative Exchange. After he retired from federal service he served in the Kansas Motor Vehicle Department during the George Docking administration. Mr. Webb also was a Democratic candidate for congress in the 7th district in 1934. He was a member of First Christian church and Orient Lodge No. 51, AF&AM, both at Topeka. He married Clara Mae Crotinger May 3, 1911, at Bison. She died July 22, 1969. He later married Selma Major September 3, 1971, at Topeka. She survives. He was born Sept. 25,1909, in Kane, Wyo., the son of Walter William Weckwerth and Mary Louise Verboncoeur Weckwerth. Mr. Weckwerth was a section foreman for the Burlington Railroad for 45 years before retiring in 1974 to Loomis, Neb. He enjoyed carpentry work, fishing and gardening. He had lived in Topeka from 1999 until moving to Rossville in 2003. Mr. Weckwerth was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Topeka, and the Knights of Columbus in Alliance, Neb., and Holyoke, Colo. He married Mabel Meier on June 25, 1935, in Wymore, Neb. She survives. Other survivors include a son, James Weckwerth, Topeka; three daughters, Clara Erixson, Crawford, Neb., Judy Schance, Boise, Idaho, and Reta Bourquin, Loomis, Neb.; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Holben was born in Skaneateles, New York, December 8, 1862, and lived there until her marriage to Lewis Weeks of St. Marys, Kansas, January 16, 1898. She united with the First Baptist Church of Skaneateles. After coming to Kansas she transferred her membership to the Congregational church at St. Marys, of which she still was a member. She was also a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She passed away Sunday, January 22, at 12:35 a.m., at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Seth Weeks, with whom she made her home in Rossville. The survivors are a brother, Joseph Holben of Skaneateles, N.Y.; three step-children, Frank Weeks of Belvue Kans., Mrs. Jake Simon of Topeka, and Seth Weeks, of Rossville; Seven nephews, nieces and grandchildren. She was born April 23, 1917, in Eskridge, the daughter of Oscar W. and Mary Ladan Appenfeller. She had lived in the Dover community many years before moving to Virginia Beach, VA in January 1994. She grew up in the Eskridge community, and was graduated from Eskridge High School in 1935. She attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. She taught in the Eskridge and Paxico communities. She was a telephone operator in Rossville for several years, and had worked for the State of Kansas Department of Revenue in the Taxation Division for many years, retiring in 1983. She had lived in Paxico, St. Marys and Rossville before moving to Dover in 1951. She was a member of the Dover Federated Church, Dover, and the Eastern Star Clarice Chapter No. 390, Dover, for over 50 years. She was married to Seth A. Weeks on April 25, 1939, at Topeka. He died January 27,1990. Surviving her are a son, Bob Mercer, Lincolnton, GA; a daughter, Uvonna Daniels, Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Ernestine Shumate, Eskridge; a brother, Dr. William Appenfeller, Osawatomie; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. | 10627 |  | Obituary- Weeres, Beulah On September 4, 2020, Beulah Louella Weeres passed away at age 83 after a brief illness. Beulah was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada. She lived on a farm and had eight siblings. It was a hard but good life. Beulah married in 1957 to Vince Weeres. They had six children. Two sons have preceded her in death, Steven and Paul Weeres, who resided in Canada. Her husband, Vincent, also preceded her. She is survived by four children: Michael Weeres: Kitimat, B.C., Canada, Brent Weeres: Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Leane VanderPutten: Rossville, KS and Janice Weeres: Rossville, KS. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Beulah lived a very full life… After her marriage, in her twenties and early thirties, she worked as a Nurse’s Aide for 13 years at the Grey Nun’s Hospital in Regina, Canada. She did not have her driver’s license so she would walk the mile to and from work. They were poor, so the money was needed. She spent the years after she left her career, caring for her growing children. A few years following their move to the U.S.A. (in 1990), at the age of 62, after studying and working hard, Beulah received a Doctorate in Naturopathy. She used these talents, along with her giving and generous heart, to care deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation or for monetary gain, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. No matter how ill she felt herself, or what worries she was experiencing, she always ensured that every person who crossed her threshold left feeling safer, healthier, and happier. Beulah’s Catholic Faith was her driving force in everything she did. It was the foundation of her life and she spread that hope and joy to whoever asked her for advice….and there were many. The daily Rosary and daily Mass was her lifeline. She arose early in the morning to pray and each day was dotted with conversations with the Blessed Mother and her Beloved Son. Beulah’s faith, perseverance and devotion will echo through her children and grandchildren and the Faith that they also carry in their hearts. Beulah spent her remaining seven years in an apartment attached to the home of Vince and Leane (her daughter) VanderPutten in Rossville. Those remaining days she shared her heart and her home to her family and friends and her family took loving care of her. She was surrounded by her loved ones at home, singing and praying, as she crossed the threshold into the next life…. Rest in peace Mom/Grandma/Great-Grandma. She was born on October 24, 1929, at Delia, the daughter of Ignac and Veronica Hejtmanek Horak. Esther grew up in the Delia community and lived there until she moved to Rossville in 1957. Esther Horak and John A. Wehner were united in marriage on October 10, 1945, at Delia. He preceded her in death on November 25, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Bennie, Eddie, Albert, Rudy, Rose, Emily, and Irene. The Wehner’s owned and operated Wehners Grocery Store and just celebrated their 105th anniversary. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville and the Czech-Moravian Lodge. He was born October 21, 1928 at Delia the son of John J. and Mary E. Stallman Wehner. John graduated from Delia High School in 1947. Mr. Wehner worked for the Union Pacific Railroad about 10 months then at his father's grocery store in Delia. John A. and Esther Wehner purchased the Delia store on February 19, 1949 and operated it until January 1, 1957. He moved to Rossville and bought Wehner's IGA from his brother Clarence. They added Western Auto in 1959. In 1969 they built the grocery store in Silver Lake and changed from Western Auto to True Value. The new store in Rossville was built in 2001 and Johnny Dollar was opened on July 7, 2006. John was looking forward to the Wehner family celebrating 100 years of business on April 15, 2015. John was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Mr. Wehner was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Irene Doyle, Florence Simecka, Clarence Wehner and Kathryn Rezac. On October 10, 1945 he was united in marriage to Esther Horak in Delia. They celebrated 69 years of marriage. She survives of the home. Other survivors include three children, John L. Mr. Wehner was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was an honorary member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, both at St. Marys. He was married to Mary E. Stallman June 6, 1917, at Wein, Mo. She died January 1, 1981. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Irene Wike, Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Katherine Rezac and Mrs. Florence Simecka, both of St. Marys; four sons, Clarence Wehner and John A. | 10638 |  | Obituary- Wehner, Larry B. Larry Wehner Larry Wehner, 71, of Rossville, passed away Monday, September 14, 2020, after a five-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Larry donated his brain to the University of Kansas Medical Center for Alzheimer’s Research. Larry was born on October 6, 1948, to Clarence and Rita Wehner in Rossville. He attended school in Rossville and graduated in 1966. Larry married his high school sweetheart Linda Miller in 1966 in St. Marys. She survives. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, IBEW #304, and AQHA. After high school, he worked at the then-new General Foods Plant in Topeka. He later went to work for Kansas Power and Light at Jeffrey Energy Center as an electrician until he retired in 2003. He also raised quarter horses and farmed. After retirement, he went to work for Foster Farms, where he got to do what he truly loved – farming, riding his horses, and taking care of cattle. Linda and Larry enjoyed their family and traveling; they had visited all but a few of the 50 states. Their favorite place was Maui, Hawaii. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by taking their sons, daughter, and spouses to Hawaii with them. They loved to dance and go to movies. Larry and Linda were blessed with a great family, two sons and a daughter, Larry (Sheri) Wehner, Jeff (Holly) Wehner and, Paula (Codie) Shenold; six grandsons, Trevor, Jacob (Bailey), Derek (Courtney), Hunter and Joe Wehner, Cooper Shenold, and a granddaughter Emma Shenold; four great-grandchildren, Beckett, Hayden, Lakyn and Rowan. Larry is also survived by two sisters, June (Marvin) Burgett, and Helen (Calvin) Lytle. Peg was born November 15, 1949, at Onaga, the daughter of Joseph A. and Eldora M. Kenworthy McGrath. She was raised in the Emmett community and attended Holy Cross Schools until her Senior year and graduated from St. Marys High School in 1967. Peg received an associate degree in Religious Studies from Benedictine College in Atchison. Peg began teaching preschool religion at Immaculate Conception in 1989, she then taught sixth grade. She trained under Wanda Forese and became the Director of Religious Education until her retirement in May of 2016. Peg was instrumental in the RCIA, and the Regional RCIA. She was the head of the Confirmation and was the Baptismal coordinator for St. Marys, Wamego, Rossville, Emmett, Delia, and Paxico. She was a graduate of the Menninger Bible Study Program and was the Virtus Coordinator/Safety Compliance person for Immaculate Conception Catholic Church since 1997. Peg taught a bible study program every year at Lent. Peg was a co-owner of Wehner’s Thriftway in Rossville and Silver Lake. Peg enjoyed old cars and attending Car Shows. Peg was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Francis Jodean McGrath, in 1947 and James A. McGrath in 2001. Peg and John L. Wehner were united in marriage on July 22, 1967, at Emmett. He survives of the home. Other survivors include her son, John P. Wehner, St. Marys (Diane Bawden, Fiancee, Emmett); three daughters, Cindy (Mike) Schmersey, Rossville, Catlin (Zac) Miller, McPherson, and Jodi Wehner, St. Marys; a brother, Jerry (Sandra) McGrath. He served on the City of Eudora Planning Commission, was on the Board of Directors for the Eudora Nursing Homes, and was a Board Member of the National Retail Liquor Association. He married Nina B. Koci on October 12, 1950 in Delia, KS. She preceded him in death on June 29, 2013. She received her nurses training at St. Anthony Murdock Hospital in Sabetha and became an R.N. Mrs. Wehner worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City before she was married. She later worked at St. Francis Hospital and at several different doctors' offices in Topeka. She and her husband owned and operated grocery and variety stores in Rossville and St. Marys. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville and was a member of the Altar Society at the church. On April 12, 1944 she was united in marriage to Clarence B. Wehner at St. Augustine Catholic Church at Fidelity. He died September 17, 2004. Mrs. Wehner was also preceded in death by a brother Leo Bindel. Survivors include two daughters, June (Marvin) Burgett and Helen (Calvin) Lytle; a son, Larry B. (Linda) Wehner all of Rossville; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Kelly P. Wehrli died about 11:35 p.m. Friday when the car in which she was riding left Hodges Road just east of Silver Lake and about eight miles west of Topeka, Shawnee County Sg. Bill Hudson said. Wehrli was a passenger in a car driven by Angela Wehner, 16, also of Rossville. Wehrli died of head injuries, but Wehner was not injured, Hudson said. Wehner told sheriff's officers that she was trying to avoid chuck-holes in the road when the car swerved off the road and flipped. | |

Shawnee County Sheriff’s Depart-ment said the vehicle in which Miss Wehrli was a passenger was southbound on Hodges Road went off the road and overturned. Miss Wehrli was a sophomore at Rossville High School where she was a member of Future Homemakers of America, the yearbook staff and basketball and volley ball teams. She was born July 4, 1970, at Topeka, the daughter of Fred W. and Scherry Brucker Wehrli, and lived all her life in Rossville. Miss Wehrli was a member of the United Methodist Church. Jimmy Lillard Unit No. 31 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Students Against Drunk Driving and was chairperson for the Cystic Fibrosis Marathon Fund Drive of the high school, all in Rossville. A sister, Kimberly Wehrli, died in September 1980. Survivors include her parents, Fred and Scherry Wehrli, Rossville; a brother, James L. She was born Sept. 7, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Harley W. and Carol Marie Wagner Brucker. She was graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Junior College and attended the University of Kansas and Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. She moved from Topeka to Rossville in 1972. She was a member of the Christian Church and the auxiliary to Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion, both in Rossville, and the Na-tional Association of Postmasters. She was married to Fred W. Wehrli Aug. 15, 1969, in Topeka. He survives. A daughter, Scherry K. Wehrli, died Sept. 7, 1980. Another daughter, Kelly P. Wehrli, died on Oct. 25, 1985. Mrs. Wehrli will lie in state from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Mrs. Wehrli will lie in state from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. | 10650 |  | Obituary- Wehrli, Scherry A. 2 Scherry Ann Wehrli Schcrry Ann Wehrli, 50, Rossville, died Sunday, May 10, 1992, at her home. Mrs. Wehrli worked at the post office in Rossville since 1977, and had been postmaster since 1985. She was born September 7, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Harley W. and Carol Marie Wagner Brucker. She was graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Junior College and attended the University of Kansas and Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. She moved from Topeka to Rossville in 1972. She was a member of the Christian Church and the auxiliary to Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion, both in Rossville, and the National Association of Postmasters. She was married to Fred W. Wehrli August 15, 1969, in Topeka. He survives. A daughter, Scherry K. Wehrli, died September 7, 1980. Another daughter, Kelly P. Wehrli, died on October 25, 1985. Other survivors include a son, James L. Wehrli, Topeka; her mother and stepfather, Carol M. and Paul E. Linton, Osborne; her father and stepmother, Rarity W. and Irene Brucker, Council Bluffs, la.; a sister, Chad D. Hurley, Topeka; a half-brother, Bradley W. Brucker, Council Bluffs, Iowa; and a grandson. Services were at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (today) at the Christian Church in Rossville. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery.
