| 10651 |  | Obituary- Wehrli, Scherry K. 1 SCHERRY KIMBERLY WEHRLI Kim Wehrli, 17-year-old daughter of Fred W. and Seherry Ann Brucker Wehrli, Rossville, was killed early Sunday morning, September 7, 1980, in a one-vehicle accident east of St. Marys on U.S. Highway 24. Miss Wehrli was born April 29, 1963, at Hutchinson. She lived at Hutchinson until moving to Topeka in 1970. In 1972, she moved to Rossville. She was a senior at Rossville High School. She was a member of Rossville United Methodist Church, junior member of the Auxiliary of the Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion, Rossville High School Band and Chorus and TASK, all at Rossville. Kim was an accomplished water skier. Survivors include her parents; a brother, James Wehrli; and a sister, Kelly Wehrli, all of the home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Brucker, Council Bluffs, la., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Linton, Topeka, and Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Wehrli, Holiday, Mo. Services were at 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery. Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys, was in charge of arrangements. | 10652 |  | Obituary- Wehrli, Scherry K. 2 ROSSVILLE GIRL KILLED IN WRECK ST. MARYS – A 17-year-old girl was killed early Sunday when the truck in which she was a passenger left the roadway and rolled several times east of St. Marys. Kansas Highway Patrol identified her as Scherry Wehrli of Rossville. The patrol said Miss Wehrli was a passenger in a truck driven by Kevin Wells, 17, St. Marys. Wells was not injured. The accident happened at 12:01 a.m. Sunday on US-24 one mile east of St. Marys when Wells swerved to avoid hitting a deer which had jumped in front of his truck, the patrol said Wells told them. The vehicle left the roadway, travelled 256 feet before flipping at least twice, the patrol said. Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Miss Wehrli was born April 29, 1963, at Hutchinson. She lived at Hutchinson until moving to Topeka in 1970. In 1972, she moved to Rossville. She was a senior at Rossville High School. | 10653 |  | Obituary- Wehrli, Scherry K. 3 Kim Wehrli Killed in Late Night Accident Kim Wehrli, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wehrli, Rossville, was killed very early Sunday morning, September 7, when the pickup in which she was a passenger went out of control, rolling several times and throwing her from the vehicle. Miss Wehrli was a passenger in the pickup driven by Kevin Wells, 17, St. Marys, according to the Highway Patrol. Wells was not injured. | 10655 |  | Obituary- Welborn, Beulah Beulah E. Welborn HOLTON — Beulah E. Welborn, 81, Holton, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1992, at a Holton nursing home. She was born March 13, 1911, in Mayetta, the daughter of Alvin K. and Lucy Davis Appier. She lived in the Rossville and Delia communities from 1930 to 1947 and in Netawaka from 1947 to 1973 when she moved to the Holton area. Mrs. Welborn was a member of the United Methodist Church in Netawaka and the Netawaka Home Demonstration Unit. She was married to Marshall Hahn Sept. 9, 1930, in Lyndon. He died Dec. 6, 1970. She was married to Norman Doak Welborn Aug. 27, 1976. He died March 18, 1987. Survivors include two sons, James Charles Hahn, Topeka, and Robert C. Hahn, Holton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in Netawaka Cemetery. Mrs. Welborn will lie in state until service time at the funeral home. | 10656 |  | Obituary- Welch, Edna EDNA WELCH DIES IN NURSING HOME Mrs. Edna A. Welch, 76, of Rossville died Tuesday evening at the Waga Nursing Home in St. Marys after a long illness. She was born in Illinois February 22, 1887, and came to Rossville with her parents when a small child. Her husband, LaVerne Welch, died in 1956. She is survived by one son, James L. Welch; one brother, Benjamin C. Mileham of Rossville; three nieces, Mrs. Maralee E. Wade of Rossville, Mrs. Jeanette Verdun of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Mrs. Eloise Rhoton, Cottonwood, Ariz., four nephews, S. E. Mile- ham of Winslow, Ariz., Ben D. Mileham of Winslow, Ariz., Robert Mileham, Sedona, Ariz., and Richard Mileham of Alabama. Services were held Saturday morning at St. Stanislaus Church in Rossville with burial in Rossville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe Navarre, Walter McCleery, Gerald Larson, Walter Startup, John Martin, and David Stiles. Verschelden Funeral Home of St. Marys was in charge of arrangements. He was born June 18, 1939, in Topeka, the son of Verne L. and Edna Mileham Welch. James grew up in Rossville and graduated from Rossville High School in 1957. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on January 9, 1959 and served with the U.S. Navy until he was honorable discharged on December 11, 1962. While in the U.S. Navy he learned the machinist trade and worked in that occupation for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two daughters, Monica Welch, Leavenworth, WA, and Clare Welch, Lincoln, NE; ex- wife, Judith Moylan Welch, Aurora, NE. A graveside inurnment service with military honors will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth. She was born August 24, 2000 to Rocky Sr. and Billie (Smith) Welch. She attended Rossville Junior High School where she was looking forward to becoming a member of the Art Club. Jessi loved horseback riding, she loved to read, draw and listen to music. She enjoyed being with her family and friends, spending time outdoors, and taking care of animals, especially her dog Duke. Jessi loved to cook especially with shrimp. She loved angel wings and her favorite flower was the stargazer lily. She had a wonderful sense of humor and cherished the nickname given to her by her family “Pork Chop”. She is preceded in death by her grandparents Bill Smith and Twila Fountaine, uncle Mike Frantz, and aunt Brenda Roberts. She is survived by her parents, brothers; Brian Pilarz, John Rath, and Rocky Welch Jr., sisters; Barbara Rath, Roxy (Randy) Acker, Michelle Welch, Krystal Welch, and Jessica Haskins, grandmother Judy Smith, aunts; Donna Meyer, Tina (Scott) Barnes, and Scarlett Pratt, uncles Scott (Stacy) Smith, and Ray Terry. | 10661 |  | Obituary- Weld, Hiram PIONEER SILVER LAKE MAN PASSED AWAY IN OKLAHOMA Hiram Weld, who was last week laid to rest near the home he had lived in for so long, was born March 19, 1855, three miles east of Silver Lake, Kansas, on the Kansas river in Shawnee county. He was a pupil in the Mission school of St. Marys, Kan., when a child and later made his home with a brother and assisted in the work of running the ferry at Silver Lake. From Silver Lake Mr. Weld went to Alma, Kan., in Wabaunsee county where he learned the trade of plastering and later he ran a training stable for track horses. It was while a resident of Alma that he met Maggie Felden, who he married in July, 1887. To this union three children were born, all of whom are now living. They are Oliver K. Weld of Pauls Valley, Mrs. B. B. Truscott, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. F. E. Doyle of Ponca City. Mr. Weld came to Oklahoma in 1900 and settled on the farm on which he died, located nine miles west of Maud in the community of the Wye, where he made his home continuously to the time of his death Uncle Hi. as he was lovingly called by all his neighbors, was one of the most highly respected of the farmers of the Maud-Wye district, and his long illness and death caused anxiety and regret by a large number of people. Miss Alma Desmond of Oklahoma City, a friend of the Weld family, is a house guest at the Weld home and will remain with Mrs. Weld for a time as a companion for her in her lonely home, until she has settled business affairs so she can take a trip to visit members of her family.—Shawnee, Okla., Daily News. | |
| 10662 |  | Obituary- Wells, David DAVID M. WELLS David M. Wells, aged 62, died at his home two miles north of Williamstown Tuesday night following an illness that began about one year ago. The body was brought to Rossville this afternoon for interment in Rossville cemetery where his parents are buried. The services at the cemetery were in charge of Rev. G. C. Albin of the Rossville Methodist church. The service at Williamstown was held this morning at 10 o’clock in the Baptist church conducted by the Rev. M. M. Thorne, pastor of the Perry Methodist church Mr. Wells, while a Christian at heart had never united with the church. He was raised in a Methodist home and expressed a preference for that faith. The Wells family were early day settlers in Kansas coming first to the Troy neighborhood from Kentucky where the deceased was born April 4th, 1863. In young man¬hood he moved to Jackson county, settling near Delia. January 18; 1897, he was united in marriage to Ella Stone at Adrian. One child, Clyde Clarence Wells was born to this union. In 1903 Mr. Wells gave up farming and for a time conducted a store in Rossville with his father. Giving this up he moved with his family to Lansing, Kansas, where he served as a guard in the state prison. In 1910 resigning this position, he bought a farm north of Williamstown where he and his family have resided since. About two years ago Mr. Wells began to fail in health, dropsy being the immediate cause. The disease never yielded to treatment and caused his death. Mr. Wells is survived by his widow and son, by two brothers, John of Delia and Clarence of Mayetta and a host of friends. | |

She was married in 1928 to Clarence Wells in Topeka. He died February 2, 1942. Mr. Wells was a farmer and mechanic before he retired, he had followed the rodeo circuits as a bronco rider in his earlier years and performed in Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada, and in Madison Square Garden. He served as special deputy several years under Jackson County Sheriff Don Collins. He was in the Army during World War II, having served in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy. He was born Aug. 11, 1902, at Circleville, the son of James C. and Lou Jeanne Owens Wells Sr. He spent most his life in Jackson County. Mr. Wells was a member of Holton Memorial Post No. 1367 of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Mary L. Bair Post No. 44 of the American Legion, both at Hilton. He married Mary B. Slattery in 1938 at Hiawatha. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Jeanice Wells, Mayetta; and two brothers, Nathan Wells and Les Wells, both of San Diego, Calif. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 1988, at the First Christian Church, Holton. Father Carl Defat officiated. Mrs. Les Beames was organist. The congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross." Casketbearers were Don Collins, LeRoy Burget, Earl Hill, Ed Dunn, Harold Tosh and H. Wells. Interment was in the St. Josephs Cemetery, Hoyt. The military color guard from Ft. Riley conducted the military 21 gun salute at the cemetery. Mercer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. | |

| 10670 |  | Obituary- Wells, Lilla Mrs. Clarence Wells Buried Here Monday Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Clarence Wells of Mayetta were held here Monday at 1:30 at the Methodist church conducted by the Rev. Mr. Job Wykert of Soldier, Kansas. Mrs. Wells died Sunday in St. Francis hospital, Topeka, where she had been taken for an operation, but whose condition was too serious for its performance. Tilla Stone Wells was born at St. Marys, Kansas, December 3, 1880 and was 40 years, 3 months and 3 days at the time of her death. At the age of 16 she united with the U.B. church at Adrian and her whole life was one of devotion to her God and her family. She was united in marriage to Clarence Wells, April 4, 1900 and eight children were born to them. | 10671 |  | Obituary- Wells, Lillian Wells Lillian E. Jennings Wells was born August 24, 1904 to Thomas A. and Carrie Johnson Jennings near Ogden. She was the seventh of nine children. Lillian graduated from Junction City High School with a normal training certificate. Her family moved to Topeka where she was employed by Capper Publications. On November 14, 1925, Lillian was united in marriage with Myron Wells in the family home in Topeka. Lillian and Myron took his niece into their home to rear and to love for eight years. Mary Wells Schmidt resides in Harrisonville, Missouri. Lillian and Myron were established in farming near the Delia and Mayetta areas until 1972 when they moved to Holton. Lillian was a dedicated helpmate and community worker. She served on the school board several years. She became a member of the Mayetta Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star No. 383 in March, 1947. She served in various capacities including worthy matron in 1952 and was organist for seven years. She was district aide in 1960-61. She received her 25 year pin in 1972 and was a faithful member for 37 years. Lillian was preceded in death by her husband in February 1982. She is survived by Mary Schmidt, her sisters, Alice McGaffin of Topeka, Sarah Kimball of Holton; several nephews and nieces and many friends. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 9, at The Mercer Funeral Home. Rev. Duane Kessler officiated. Mrs. Ray Wright sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Come Dine.” Casketbearers were C. L. She came west with her parents who settled in Illinois in 1851 where they remained but a few years and then moved to Buchanan county, Mo. From Missouri the family moved in 1858 to Doniphan county, Kans. and settled on a farm near Troy. here she was married, Jan. 9., 1858, to J.S. Wells. To this union seven children were born only three of whom, John, David and Clarence, are living. Soon after the marriage they moved to Kentucky where they remained seven years, returning to Doniphan county in the year 1866, and for sixteen years resided near Troy. It was here Mrs. Wells united with the M.E. Church and lived a consistent [sic] Christian life till her death, taking an active part in every brach of church work. In the year 1882 the family moved to Jackson county, Kansas, and in the fall of 1895 they came to Rossville and purchased a home on Pearl street where they have since resided. She lived for less than 20 minutes after the seizure and was dead when the Doctor arrived. The Well's reside on one of the Pessimire Farms Southwest of St. Marys. Mrs Wells was 59 years old and a lifetime resident of the Kaw Twp. Mary Margaret Elizabeth Lytle before her marriage. She was born in Kaw Twp Sept 18, 1886. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Columbus C. Lytle, the former dieing in 1918 and latter at age 82. Mary Margaret was married to Jim Wells in Topeka in 1908. She was the mother of twelve children, five dieing in infancy, she is survived by her husband and seven children. | 10678 |  | Obituary- Wells, Myron 1 Wells Myron E. Wells, born in 1901, died of a heart attack at his home Thursday evening, February 11. Myron was born at Williamstown, and was the eldest son of Clarence and Lillie Wells. He stayed with his folks, helping them farm until the family moved to St. Marys. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 393 of Mayetta as well as a member of Eastern Star 383. He worked as a truck driver for several years, but his heart was really with farming. His first farm was north of Delia. He married Lillian Jennings in 1926 and took his bride to live on his farm. Several years later they bought a farm 2 miles north and 8 miles west of Mayetta where they lived until his retirement in 1971. After retirement they moved to Holton where he resided until his death. He leaves his wife, Lillian, of the home; three brothers, George Wells of Topeka, Cecil and Herbert Wells of Holton; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Eby of Mayetta and Mrs. Clara Harper of New Castle, Wyoming; a host of nieces and nephews and many friends. He will be sadly missed by all. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 15, from The Mercer Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy West officiating. Burial was in the Holton Cemetery. The music was furnished by Mrs. Dolores Wright who sang “How Great Thou Art.” The active pallbearers were Creston Kern, Carl Nelson, Clarence Vaught, Elmer Eckhoff, James Johnson and Ray Cox. Patrick was born to Kevin and Carol Ekman Werick in Topeka, on August 18, 1983. He graduated from St. Marys Academy in 2001. After years of travel and doing odd-jobs here and there, he studied at Kansas State University, Manhattan, and earned a BS in 2009, with a major in journalism and a minor in creative writing. Patrick was the Vice President and Director of Marketing for Roll Products in St. Marys. He was a member of Assumption Chapel. In February of 2011, Patrick and Amanda Perry were united in marriage at Assumption Chapel in St. Marys. He was a doting husband and father, and his wife and children were the love of his life. She survives of the home. These are the brief but full facts of Patrick. But more should be said, for he had what the French call joie de vivre—the joy of living. His warmth, cheer, humor, wit, and his honest mischief were his constant companies. Hardly anyone who met him could not help but become caught in his infectious merriment. The people of St. Marys saw this nearly daily with him, cruising about town on his electric scooter, goggled and grinning, and the tune “The Ride of Valkyrie” blaring from his speakers. But others around the United States and the world tasted some of Patrick’s joy. He was a traveler from his very early days of adulthood. After graduation, he and a friend, Robert Campbell, cycled across the United States and Canada. This journey and others, to Ireland and elsewhere, brought Patrick and his memorable character in touch with so many souls, not only with people he stayed with, but also people he met on the streets of Cork, Topeka, and everywhere in between. | |
| 10685 |  | Obituary- Werick, Jerome 2 Patrick’s Magnum Opus, however, was his music, and more importantly his “Grand Celtic Music Tour.” He and a handful of friends played Irish tunes at manors, festivals, theatres, homes, and even in the Kansas Capital—wherever there was an ear that wanted to hear and a voice that wanted to share in the music, Patrick was there. His list of instruments—all self-taught—is an eclectic mix: the tin whistle, the Scottish bagpipes, the Uillean pipes, the didgeridoo, the bombard, the cow bell, the ugly stick, and tapping shoes, to name a few. And the oddity, Patrick had never learned to read sheet music in his twenty years of playing. While music and merriment were ever in his heart, his family was his soul. His love for his wife was immense, and spilled over to their children. Family vacations, which took them across the U.S. and Canada, were filled with tender memories. In his own home, this found its way into one of his favorite joys, enjoying beverages at the basement bar with his children. Patrick often came home with a bottle of ginger beer and he poured it out in tumblers for him and his children while listening to Irish pub music, and they would raise their glasses until bedtime. In 2016 Patrick developed a great devotion to Saints Cosmas and Damian. He had contracted a sickness that had brought him to death’s door, but through the intercession of these doctor saints, he returned to health. To honor them, he built a special shrine in his home, and annually on their feastday, would open his house to anyone who also wanted to pay tribute to his saintly friends. He leaves his seven children, Brendan, Grace, Anna, Brigid, Adelyn, Clare and Nellie, as a part of his legacy. Other survivors include his parents, Kevin and Carol Werick; his seven siblings, Aliisa Lund, Jason Werick, Anne Olivo, Maria Bruno, Joseph Werick, Miriam Wilson, and Mary Carroll. Florence enjoyed interior decorating, making a wonderful home for her and her family. She sold Home Interiors for many years. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church at Topeka, Kansas, and a member of the Bible Baptist Church at Grove, Oklahoma. She is survived by her husband Robert "Bob" Werner of the home. | 10687 |  | Obituary- Weseloh, Ann Obituary Ann Bush was born at Indianapolis, Ind., February 10, 1840. When 16 years of age her parents moved to Illinois and 11 years later came on to Kansas, locating at Big Springs east of Topeka in 1867. Two years later she came to Rossville where resided until her death. On July 10, 1881, she was united in marriage to John Weseloh. No children were born to this union but she assumed the cares and tenderly cared for five children of relatives in addition to two step-children. Mrs. Weseloh was one of the earliest settlers of this community, her's being the fifth white family to locate here. On March 10, 1910, Mr. Weseloh died and her death occurred Oct. 18, 1916, at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 8 days. Her loss is mourned by one brother, John Bush, of Mayetta, Kansas, two step-children, John Weseloh, of Olpe, Kansas, and Mrs. Len Henderson, of Topeka, two nephews, Len and L.L. Henderson, the latter whom she raised, beside a host of friends made during her long life in the community. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Allen, of Topeka, in the Rossville M.E. church and the interment made in the Rossville cemetery, Friday, Oct. 20. The out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Bush, of Mayetta; Mr. and Mrs. Len Henderson, of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Saville, of Topeka; Nathan McPherson, of St. Marys and Mr. and Mrs. Ike Mitchell, of Silver Lake. Mrs. Weseloh's last illness dated only from the last of the week. For more than two years her health has been gradually declining but she was compelled to take to her bed only at short intervals and would then recover. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 1 o'clock from the M.E. church and interment made in the Rossville cemetery. Mrs. Weseloh was one of the oldest residents of this city coming here in 1868 and a more full history of her life will be given next week. | 10688 |  | Obituary- Weseloh, John Obituary John Weseloh was born April 1, 1849 in Germany. He came with his parents to American in 1866 and settled at Sedalia, Mo. In 1869 he came to Rossville and has made this town and vicinity his home ever since. In 1871 he was married to Margaret Simon and to this union three children were born. Emma, the oldest child, died in December, 1879, and his wife died a year later, January, 1880. In July, 1881 he married Ann Bush, who with the two children, John and Anna, survive to mourn his loss. Mr. Weseloh had been ill and almost an invalid for the past two years. His strong will-power and vigorous constitution battled bravely with the encroachment of disease and he lingered long after physicians and friends had given up all hope. But in the evening of Thursday, March 10 he gave up the unequal struggle and quietly passed into the realms of the unseen world. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the M.E. Church, the Rev. E.W. Allen, his former pastor officiating. The church was filled with sympathizing friends and neighbors who came to pay a last tribute of respect to a worthy and upright citizen. The Knights and Ladies of Security lodge, of which he was a member, attended in a body. Many beautiful floral offerings were banked upon the casket. Mr. Weseloh was a member of the M.E. Church and lived a faithful, devout christian life and the church and community loses an active and valuable member in his death. The interment took place in the City cemetery. | |

She was born December 8, 1928, in Hoyt, the daughter of James Henry and Myrtle Mae Dillinger Bailey. She graduated from Silver Lake High School. Mrs. Westfall retired from the city of Topeka Water Department. She earlier had owned and operated Mothers Attic Antiques. Mrs. Westfall was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church, past matron of Hoyt Chapter No. 189 of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member to the Provost Guard of the Arab Temple, Kansas Grand Representatives Association of the Order of the Eastern Star, and she was Kansas Order of the Eastern Star Grand Chapter Representative to the Grand Chapter of Maryland from 1988 to 1990. On October 17, 1948, she married John Merritt Westfall, Jr. in Hoyt. He died February 25, 1997. Survivors include two sons, Michael Westfall, Delia, and Samuel Westfall, Topeka; two daughters, Pamela Rohr, and Linda Rickson, both of Topeka; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her service was Friday morning at Parker-Price Mortuary. Chapter No. 189 conducted an Order of the Eastern Star service. Burial was in Walnut Hill Cemetery at Grove. Visitation was at the funeral home Thursday evening. He was born October 3, 1943 in Michigan, the son of Leo and Esther (Shultz) Westphal. Gary was an Air Force Veteran and was stationed in Topeka from 1962 – 1966. He was employed by the Parks & Recreation Department for the City of Topeka for many years before retiring. He was a member of the Rossville Bible Church. Gary married Nina Katkins. They later divorced. Survivors include one son, Gary W. (Rebecca) Westphal, Jr. of Topeka, step-children, Travis Birk of Alaska, Artemis Birk of Florida, Sheila Kassouf of Mississippi and two grandchildren, Johanna and Owen. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the Rossville Bible Church. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Mr. Wetlaufer was administrator of Highland Park Elementary and Junior High schools from 1943 until 1966. He was a special consultant for Topeka public schools before he retired. He began his teaching career at Glen Elder and was administrator of schools at Selden, Cawker City, Rexford and Delia, before he moved to Topeka. He established one of the first special education classes in Kansas at Highland Park Elementary School. He was born Oct. 8, 1903, in Glen Elder, the son of William and Emma Albert Wetlaufer, and was graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1922. He received a bachelor of education and masters in administration in 1940 from Fort Hays State College. Mr. Wetlaufer was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, Downtown Kiwanis Club, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, and School Administrators Association and was a charter member of Highland Park Optimist Club. He was a member of Selden. Lodge No. 423, AF&AM, in Selden more than 50 years. He formerly was president and secretary of the Kansas Association of Elementary School Principals. He also had been secretary of the Kansas Society for Exceptional Children. He was married to Louise B. Saunders June 8, 1928, in Glen Elder. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harriet Treacy, Naperville, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Applebee, Glen Elder; and two granddaughters. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Highland Park United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Glen Wood Cemetery in Glen Elder. Mrs. Whearty owned a hearing-aid franchise. She worked on an assembly line during World War II and had taught school one year in Yuma, Colo. She was born July 5, 1902, in Yates Center, Kan., the daughter of Albertus and Lydia Wagner. She was graduated from high school in Iola and earned an associate degree from Emporia, Kan., Teachers College. Mrs. Whearty was a former member and worthy matron of Beulah Chapter No. 34 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Topeka, Kan. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church, Edna Hedges Chapter No. 15 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Bath Zabbia Temple No. 21 of the Daughters of the Nile. She married Lawrence Whearty on Sept. 12, 1924. He died in 1986. Survivors include a son, Raymond Whearty, Billings, Mont.; a sister, Lillian Palminteri, Freehold, N.J.; many grand¬children; great-grandchildren; arid great-great-grandchildren. A retired Santa Fe employee, he was the brother of Martin Whearty of Rossville. He was born January 13, 1882, to James and Melvina Whearty, Westmoreland. Funeral services were held July 7 at Parker Mortuary with burial in Rossville Cemetery. The Rev. Don Jones officiated at the services. Other survivors include three half-brothers, James Nason, Leland Nason, and William Nason, all of Topeka, and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Galen Whearty, Calvin Whearty, Everett Whearty, Bill Whearty, Francis Foster and Howard Berends. Galen and Everett Whearty of Wichita and a group from Westmoreland also attended the funeral. |
