| 10751 |  | Obituary- Whitlock, Robert 1 Robert Bruce Whitlock ROSSVILLE — Robert Bruce Whitlock, 74. Rossville, died Wednesday, Feb. 5. 1992, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Whitlock worked 34 years for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company before he retired 11 years ago. He also owned and operated an antique shop in Rossville several years. He was born Feb. 5, 1918, at Lane, the son of Wilmer S. and Hulda Clements Whitlock. Mr. Whitlock was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rossville, He was married to Ila Herrick on Sept. 5, 1948, at St. Marys. She survives. An infant son, William Whitlock, died in 1949. Other survivors include a daughter, Sue Aschenbrenner, Topeka; a son, Bill Whitlock, Kenosha, Wis.; three sisters, Joan Myers, Maple Hill, Helen Davis, Neodesha, and Beth Powell, Topeka; and two granddaughters. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Whitlock will lie in state after 1 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary, where family and friends will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. Monday. | 10752 |  | Obituary- Whitlock, Wilbur WILBUR S. WHITLOCK Services for Wilbur Simpson Whitlock, 75, of Maple Hill, retired farmer who died Tuesday, at his home were at 10:30 a. m. Thursday at Parkers mortuary, with burial in Maple Hill cemetery. Mr. Whitlock was born in Bellville, Ill., February 4, 1874, and came to Kansas when a child. He had lived in Wilson and Neosho counties before moving to Maple Hill three years ago. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Huldah Whitlock; three daughters, Mrs. Cecil Davis is of Neodesha and Mrs. T. O. Meyers of Rossville and Mrs. J. M. Powell of Cut Bank, Mont.; a son, Robert Whitlock of Rossville; a brother, Ray Whitlock of Elmdale; two sisters, Mrs. Don Pierson of Osage City, and Mrs. W. F. Vilven of San Antonio, and three grandchildren. | |

Whitlow (January 27, 1921 - January 20, 2007) Frances Louisa Whitlow Frances Louisa Whitlow was born January 27, 1921 to Clarence Edgar and Leah Louise Reynolds Read at Topeka, Kansas. Her release from a long illness came early Saturday morning, January 20, 2007 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas, ending a life of 85 years, 11 months, and 24 days. Frances grew up and attended school in Topeka, graduating from Highland Park High School. On April 24, 1943, Frances was united in marriage with Merton Otis Whitlow at Topeka, Kansas. Two sons and one daughter were born to this union. The couple was privileged to celebrate nearly 60 years of married life together. Merton was a petroleum engineer and his job took them to Wyoming, Nebraska, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Iran. They lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1955 until 2000 when they moved to Beloit to be near their son Stan and daughter-in-law Juanita. While in Tulsa, she was a homemaker, elementary school cook, and a receptionist for the LaMode Cleaners. A kind, very personable and loveable person, Frances treasured her home and family. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family. Frances loved cooking and always looked forward to hosting large family dinners, even when her health would not allow. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Her husband Merton died in February, 2003. In addition, Frances was preceded in death by her parents, and one daughter Margaret Irene Stanfield. She was born in Rossville January 28, 1890, and belonged to the Tecumseh Methodist church. Surviving are her husband, Edgar H. Whitlow, of the home; three sons, Wade of Belflower, Calif., Merton of Shreveport, La., and Herbert of Tecumseh, and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Weatherholt of Merced, Calif., Mrs. Elizabeth Fricke of Santa Monica, Calif., and Mrs. Gracia Danseburg of Wichita. Services were held at the Penwell- Gabel funeral home Monday in Topeka with graveside services at Rossville cemetery. | |
| 10756 |  | Obituary- Whitmore, Michael Michael Whitmore Passes Away Michael J. Whitmore, 50, of Tecumseh, passed away at Rossville Health Center with his parents at his side on July 31, 2020. Michael was born on Feb. 13, 1970, the son of Elmer and Gloria Whitmore. He is survived by his parents and a son, Michael A. Whitmore. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kelly in February 2019. Chapel Oaks is in charge of arrangements. Cremation is planned with private family services. She was born February 9,1930, at Willard, the daughter of John H. and Velma L. Marney Simons. Mrs. Whitmore was cremated. | 10758 |  | Obituary- Whitney, Carrie CARRIE L. WHITNEY Mrs. Carrie L. Whitney was born in New Haven, Conn., January 26, 1867 and passed away at the age of 89 on October 15, 1956. When just a small child she, with her divorced mother, Mrs. Louisa Belwood, one sister and two brothers came west with other relatives to the vicinity of Akron, Iowa, where she was brought up with a good education and joined the Methodist church. She was active in church work and taught five years of school before marrying Orson Deforest Whitney, a farmer, on May 12, 1891. To this union four children were born. In 1911 the family moved to Kansas where they have lived in the vicinity of Rossville since 1912. The husband and two children, a daughter Thora and an infant son Isadore Lloyd, preceded her in death. Those surviving her are a brother Arthur Belwood at Akron, Iowa, and two children, a son Curt K. Whitney at Oxnard, Calif., and a daughter Miss Vida at the home. There are four grandchildren, one a grandson Clay W. Young of the home, and three great grandchildren. She was a devoted mother to her family and was active in church work most of her life. | |

Whitney received the new Tuesday of the death of her grandson, James Whitney, which occurred early Tuesday morning at his parents home in Oklahoma City. James was 5 years old, and the youngest of Mr. and Mrs. Curt Whitney's three children. Death was caused by diphtheria. | |
| 10760 |  | Obituary- Whitney, Orsen O.D. Whitney Kills Himself At His Home Despondent over his poor health Orsen Deforest Whitney, aged 68, shot and killed himself with a high-powered rifle at his home four miles northwest of Rossville last Saturday afternoon. After his wife and daughter, Miss Vida Whitney had come to town Mr. Whitney picked up his rifle, a 25-20, sat down in an arm chair rested the butt end of the gun on the dining room table and pulled the trigger with his hand. The first shop missed its mark leaving a scratch on the top of the scalp. He then reloaded the gun and shot himself thru the head, the bullet entering the left side just above the ear. There were two bullet holes in the wall and two empty shells, one in the chamber of the gun and one on the floor. Mrs. Whitney and Miss Vida found the body when they returned from Rossville about 4 o'clock. He left a note to his wife, giving her some instructions about business matters. No inquest was held by Coroner H.L. Clark. Mr. Whitney suffered a stroke of apoplexy about 18 months ago and since had been in very poor health, suffering severe pains in his head. He had resided on the farm northwest of town for the past 17 years, but prior to moving here in 1912 had lived in this community many years ago. Mr. Whitney was born July 6th, 1860 at Sake Mills, Wisconsin. In his early manhood he moved west to the Dakotas and farmed several years. In the fall of 1896 he was elected county auditor of Union county, South Dakota, and served two terms. In the spring of 1900 he began operating a line of grain elevators and acted in that capacity until 1905. He was united in marriage to Miss Carrie S. Bellwood in the spring of 1897. To this union were born four children, Vida of the home address, Thora S. of New York City, Curt K. of Oklahoma City, Okla., who with their mother survive him. One son, Isadore Lloyd died in infancy. February 1st, 1912 he moved his family to the farm four miles northwest of Rossville where he lived until his death October 13th, 1928. He was a devoted husband and father. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Rossville Methodist church conducted by the Rev. Gordon S. Pritchett. The body was interred in Memorial cemetery at Topeka. She was born Feb 20, 1892, in southeast South Dakota, near Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. DeForest Whitney. She moved to rural Rossville in 1912 where she lived until moving to St. Marys. Miss Whitney was a seamstress and member of Rossville United Methodist Church, Friendly Circle class at the church, an honorary member of United Methodist Women for nearly 60 years and Countryside Club, all of Rossville. Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. Carolyn DeAngelis, Seaside Pork, N.J., and Mrs. Louise Dykes, Canton, Ohio; and two nephews. Clay Young, Lawrence, and C.K. Whitney, Wilmington, Del. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rossville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka. Miss Whitney will lie in state until noon Thursday at Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys, and from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. | 10763 |  | Obituary- Whitten, Mary Mary L. Whitten Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Mary L. Whitten, 74, Topeka, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 1995, at a Topeka hospital. Mrs. Whitten was a registered nurse and worked a short time at the Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka and for the Topeka and Shawnee County Health Department. She also worked in the Department of Health and Environment for the State of Kansas. She served in the Army from 1945 to 1947. She was born Sept. 4,1921, in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Paschal P. and Emma Ford Enos. She earned a nursing degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Public Health certificate from the University of Minnesota. Mrs. Whitten was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Zonta Club of Topeka. Survivors include a daughter, Jan Harrington, Blue Springs, Mo.; a son, John M. Whitten, Medford, Ore.; a brother, Dr. Jack P. Enos, Yukon, Okla.; and a grandson. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. | 10764 |  | Obituary- Whittington, John C. John C. Whittington ALLEN - John C. Whittington, 76, Allen, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1987, at an Emporia hospital. Mr. Whittington was a telephone technician for the S&A Telephone Co. at Allen since 1964. He was born April 10, 1911, at Lebo, the son of Philip and Susan Mae McKinney Whittington. He moved from Arvonia to Reading in 1958 and then to Allen in 1962. Mr. Whittington was a member of the United Methodist Church at Allen and was a Sunday school teacher at the church. He also was a past president and had served in other offices in the Northern Heights Men's Club near Allen. He was a former member of Arvonia Township Board and Allen City Council. He also had coached summer baseball teams at Allen, Reading and Lebo. He helped start the Osage City 4-H Livestock Sale. He also was a leader for 12 years of the Arvonia Busy Bees 4-H Club. He was married to Hildred Marshall on March 1, 1936, at Osage City. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. JoAnne Booth, Delia, and Mrs. Donna Lee Weber, Mount Vernon, Mo.; two sons, John Whittington, Douglas, and Paul Whittington, Emporia; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Martin, Madison; six brothers, Clyde Whittington and Louis Whittington, both of Reading, Wayne Whittington, Baldwin, Jacob Whittington, Chicago, Gene Whittington, Valley Center, and D.L. Whittington, Americus; nine grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Allen United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery at Lebo. | 10765 |  | Obituary- Whittington, Melvin 1 Melvin Wesley Whittington Melvin Wesley Whittington was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, April 4, 1910, and passed away at North Platte, Nebraska, November 26, 1935, at the age of 25 years, 7 months and 22 days. He had been employed at the Levi Anderson Auto Service as a mechanic. He injured his left wrist which developed into blood poisoning. He was practically over the blood poisoning and the physician had permitted him to return to his work. After one and a half days he became ill with pleuresy which later developed into double pneumonia, but his system being so run down by the blood poisoning he had no resistence [sic] and his heart was too weak to carry the load. At the time of his death he was making his home with his sister, Mrs. Marie Scoun. When Melvin was 8 years old he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Whittington to Casper, Wyoming where his father was employed as locomotive engineer for the Burlington railroad. They resided there until the year of 1926, when they moved to Independence, Kansas, locating on a farm 13 miles southwest of Independence. They remained there until the year 1929 when they moved to Rossville, locating on a farm where they now live. Melvin made his home with his parents until August 11, 1935, when he struck out in the world to seek a career for himself. He located in North Platte, Neb., where he was employed at the time of his death. Melvin was a very ambitious young man, kind and loving to all who knew him. Since going to North Platte he had been baptized into the Episcopal church of Our Savior. Melvin attended school at Casper, Wyo. Funeral services were held in Rossville, Thursday, Nov. 28, at 2:30 p.m. at the Methodist church Reverend Wright Horton officiated, and the body was laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery. The pallbearers were Osie Huhs, Ed Arnold, Huck Raines, Delbert Weir of Maple Hill, and Earl Doty and Glen Davis of Rossville. Melvin leaves to mourn his going his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Whittington, and four sisters, Mrs. Freda Smith of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Leah Berry of Rossville, Mrs. Marie Scoun and Miss Frances Whittington of North Platte, Neb. besides a host of other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. -- We wish to express our heart-felt thanks to the many dear friends and neighbors who so faithfully assisted us in our sad bereavement, the loss of our darling son and brother, Melvin; also for the comforting words of the Reverend Horton, the ladies who sang and for the beautiful floral offerings. | 10766 |  | Obituary- Whittington, Melvin 2 MELVIN WHITTINGTON DEAD The community was shocked by the sudden death of Melvin Whittington. son of Mr. and Mrs. John Whittington, who passed away Tuesday noon, at North Platt, Neb., following a short illness. Death resulted from pneumonia following a case of blood poisoning. Funeral services will be held today, at 2:30 at the Methodist church. An obituary will be published next week. Whittington, 86, Topeka, died Monday in a local convalescent center. She was born Feb. 11, 1885 at Missouri Valley, Iowa. She had lived in Topeka five years, coming here from Independence. She had lived in Rossville and St. Marys communities for many years. She was married to John W. Whittington in Oberlin in 1902. He died in 1966. She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church; Artha Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, St. Marys; and Sue Lovell Chapter, Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frances Lemon, Topeka and Mrs. Leah Berry, Wichita; a brother, Frank McGonigle, Independence, Kan; 17 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Parker Mortuary. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. She was born March 24, 1906, at Delia in Jackson County, the daughter of James Henry and Matilda Hiserman McClain. She moved from Benkelman, Neb., to Eudora in 1979. Mrs. Whittington attended the Baptist Church. She was married to Harry Keith Whittington Dec. 26, 1947, in Topeka. He survives. Dr. Antonio Huaman, Shawnee County District coroner, said Wiant hanged himself. He was born April 21, 1915, at Silver Lake, the son of Elmus and Mary Hine Wiant, and lived in the Topeka area all his life. Mr. Wiant was a carpenter and worked in the maintenance department of Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center. An Army veteran of World War H, he was a member of Silver Lake Post No. 160 of the American Legion and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 555, Topeka. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Janet Northcraft, 5136 N.W. Pueblo Court; and a brother, L.W. Wiant, Colorado Springs, Colo. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Parker-Price Mortuary. | 10771 |  | Obituary- Wichman, Charles CHARLES E. WICHMAN Charles E. Wichman, 58, Seneca, died Tuesday, August 4, 1981, at a Seneca hospital. He had cancer. He was born December 23, 1922, south of Seneca, the son of Ben J. and Mary A. Stuke Wichman. He attended Diamond Grade School south of Seneca and Sts. Peter and Paul School at Seneca. Mr. Wichman farmed south of Seneca until 1970, when he moved to a farm west of Seneca. He also helped maintain Nemaha County Nursing Home until the home was closed in 1976. He moved to Seneca in 1976, and worked at Nemaha County landfill east of Seneca. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Seneca. He was married to Grace Honeyman November 18, 1943, at Seneca. She survives. He was born June 6,1945 in Waterville, KS the son of Ernest Fredrich and Patricia F. (Pickett) Wichman. He had lived in Valley Falls, Clay Center and Oskaloosa before moving to Holton in 1957. Dale attended Holton High School and later served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967. Dale worked at various auto body shops in Holton and Topeka before opening his own business, Dale’s Body Shop that he owned and operated for 11 years. In 1994 he opened, Dale’s Used Furniture, on the town square in Holton; for over 20 years. He was a member of the Holton VFW Post # 1367. He was married to Cheryl A. Wehrkamp on August 30, 1980 in Holton. Cheryl survives of the home. Dale is also survived by his mother, Patricia Wichman I of Holton, KS; his daughters, Tammy Skelton of California, Elisa Ashcraft-Armstrong (Travis) of Rossville, KS and Jennifer Wingender (Michael) of Netawaka, KS; his son, Dale W. | 10775 |  | Obituary- Widener, Samantha Samantha Widener Mrs. Samantha C. Widener, 81, pioneer resident of Silver Lake township, died at her home in Silver Lake early Friday morning, Feb. 17. Mrs. Widener and her husband, the late Mike Widener, a Civil war veteran, were married at Marengo, Iowa, October 4, 1867, and started for Kansas the same month. They made the trip in a prairie schooner that required about 21 days. They settled on a farm in Jefferson county. The same year they moved to a farm along Soldier creek about 7 miles from Silver Lake. At that time the Union Pacific Railroad Co. was laying rails thru Shawnee County. Most of the land was owned by the Pottawatomie Indians and was cheap. They went thru the hardships and crop failures that early pioneers experienced. In 1874, corn looked so good that they were planning to build additional cribs to store the surplus. Then came the grasshoppers that destroyed the entire crop. About $50 in cash which they had accumulated proved sufficient to pull them thru the following winter. Thirty-seven years ago they moved to Silver Lake and Mrs. Widener had made her home in the same house continuously since. Her husband died four years ago. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. B.F. Cones, Hutchinson; a brother, A. W. Bradshaw, Topeka; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one daughter, Mary Etta died at the age of 16 years. Mrs. Widener was converted at an early age and joined the Baptist church and was one of the first members of the Silver Lake Baptist church and had been a faithful devout Christian. Funeral services were held at the Silver Lake Baptist church Sunday, afternoon, Feb. 19, at 1 o’clock. Interment was in Silver Lake cemetery. We thank our neighbors and friends who assisted in caring for our beloved one during her last illness, and for their expressions of sympathy in our loss, for the beautiful flowers, and especially, we thank the members of the Silver Lake Baptist church for preparing the church for the funeral services. She was born on February 21, 1928 in Rossville, Kansas, the daughter of George and Rosie Olejnik. She attended Victor 101 School, a one room school house now located at Ward Mead Park and Rossville High School. Agnes was employed by Santa Fe Railroad for 32 years before retiring in 1989. Agnes loved her family, sewing, baking, flowers, Seek-A-Word puzzles and an occasional bingo/casino night. She enjoyed collecting dolls and lady head vases. Cooking was her passion and she was forever trying a new recipe or enjoying a new cookbook. She also loved watching KU basketball games. Her fortitude and determination served her well during her lifetime. Her mottos were "get your work done before you play" and "when times are tough, things will be better tomorrow". She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers George, Rudolf, Henry, Bill, Ed and sisters Josephine, Georgianne and Helen. She is survived by daughter Cheryl Buxton (late Dan Buxton) of Topeka, daughter Marilyn Koontz of Topeka and son William Koontz of Port Orange, Florida. Grandchildren Ryan (Erica) Koontz of Topeka, Tyler (Shea) Koontz of Statesboro, Georgia and Tara Montana Koontz of Port Orange, Florida and great grandchildren Brynlee and Henley. Wilbur, an employee of a Union Pacific bridge gang, had gone fishing with two other employees Tuesday night. He still was fishing when they left him. A search was begun Wednesday morning when he failed to report for work and his car was found where he had left it Tuesday night. He apparently had fallen into the water while fishing. Wilbur was born March 20, 1907, at Brunswick, Ark., and had lived in Topeka before moving to Rossville three years ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Celeste Wilbur of the home; a son, William Wilbur of the home; two step-sons, James and John Vanderblomen, both of Rossville; and two step-daughters, Janice Vanderblomen of the home, and Miss Judith Vanderblomen, Hoyt. Kay and her family moved to the Rossville community, where she attended high school. Kay worked in food services for Kaw Valley USD No. 321 for 50 years before retiring. She was preceded in death by her son, William C. “Billy” Wild on Nov 27, 1989; her parents; three brothers, Billy, John Jr., and Robert; and her sister, Rosemary Pauly. He was born on December 13,1924 to John and Dorothy (Summers) Wiley in Enumclaw, Washington. Mr. Wiley served proudly in the Navy in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He met his bride, Margaret Peak, at the University of Washington. They were married on August 6, 1948. She proceed him in death on February 28, 2005. Mr. Wiley was an Activities Therapist at the Menninger Foundation for over 30 years where he enjoyed guiding the patients in outdoors with project groups building rock walls, landscaping, in the woodworking shop and being part of a dedicated staff. He was active in the Boy Scouts and served many positions including Scoutmaster for Troop 18, was an active member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, a member of the Masonic Lodge for 60 years, and volunteered for the Topeka Literacy Council. Mr. Wley enjoyed woodworking, camping with family and friends, reading, gardening, a variety of movies, attending music concerts and community plays. He was a loving husband and father who was dedicated to his family. His calming demeanor and love will be greatly missed. Survivors include his daughter, Donna Jean Deever, and her husband, Bob, of Topeka, his son, Dr. Bruce R. Wiley of Greybull, WY, his grandsons, Douglas Eugene Deever of Omaha, NE, Michael G. Lori found joy in many things including fishing, camping, arts and crafts, working with her plants and spending time outside with friends and family. She loved exploring new places and finding hidden wonders on her adventures down the back roads. Lori was a loving wife, mom, daughter, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother, and will be greatly missed by many. She loved her family very much, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Rodney "Rod" Lee Wilkinson; one daughter, Nikole Lea Wilkinson; Mother ,Peggy Ann Lawson; one brother Terry Keith; two sisters Brandy Thomas-Zeilinger, and Cheri L. Foster; along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Justin Eugene Little; and her father Chester Max Bolton. The family will be holding a Celebration of Life on April 15th, 2022 at a place to be determined for family and friends. | |

Patria was born February 5,1944 in Clay Center, NE, the daughter of Carl and Florence (Judy) Jorgensen. She graduated from Davenport High School in Davenport, NE and a business college in Omaha, NE. She was employed as a Registrar at Stormont-Vail Hospital for over 38 years. Patria married Kenneth Wilkinson on June 16,1967. He survives. Other survivors include their children, Kenneth R. | 10791 |  | Obituary- Willard, Jess Boxer. Heavyweight Champion of the World 1915-1919. Jess "The Pottawatomie Giant" Willard was born on December 29, 1881 the youngest of 4 brothers. In his youth he worked in the livery stable business then started boxing in 1911. Willard used his height of 6 feet 6 inches tall to full advantage working behind a stiff jab. He progressed steadily through the ranks defeating the likes of Jack Moran, Frank Bauer and Ed Smith. On April 5, 1915 Willard faced Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson on a sweltering day in Havana, Cuba and scored a 26th round knockout. Willard mostly fought exhibitions over 4 years time but did defend his title once over Frank Moran. On July 4, 1919 he faced Jack Dempsey on a sweltering day in Toledo, Ohio. Bobbing and weaving, Dempsey closed the gap on the much taller Willard and knocked him down 7 times in the first round. The carnage continued for 2 more rounds until the fight was stopped because Willard couldnt answer the bell for the fourth round. Although Willard lost the title he was praised for showing tremendous courage against the Dempsey onslaught. Willard would continue to box mostly exhibitions for several more years and finally retired from boxing in 1926 with a record of 28-6-1 with 21 knockouts. He then dabbled in many ventures afterwards including refereeing wrestling matches and performing with the USO. Willard died on December 15, 1968. In 2003, Willard was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. | |

She was born Dec. 8,1917, in Dover, the daughter of Leogard Lambotte and Martha Werner. She was graduated from Dover High School and attended a beauty college in Topeka. Mrs. Willett was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church and was active in various church activi¬ties. She also had worked on several election boards. She was married to Charles W. Willett in 1954 in Reno, Nev. He died Jan. 5, 1988. Survivors include a son, Mark Willett, Topeka; two brothers, Norman Lambotte, Rossville, and Eldon Lambotte, Hiawatha; a sister, Martha Kaul, Topeka; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Crestview United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Willett will lie in state after 3 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Mr. Williams and his father owned and operated the Silver Lake, Rossville, Delia and Valencia Telephone Co. many years. After the company was sold, he worked 37 years as sanitarian for the Shawnee County Health Department until he retired in 1975. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was born Jan. 3, 1911, at Silver Lake, the son of Charles David and Ellen Veronica Cunningham Williams. He attended St. Benedict College at Atchison. Mr. Williams was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 534. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Morrisey on Nov. 26, 1936, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mary Kathleen Ruebel, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Elizabeth V. Wunder, Topeka; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. | 10796 |  | Obituary- Williams, George News and Comment Mrs. Ishmael's Father Died Mrs. H.E. Ishmail was called to Missouri last week by the illness of her father. The day following her arrival he died. The following from the Chillicothe Tribune is an account of the funeral.: Geo. L. Williams, 78 years old a veteran of the Civil War and one of Chillicothe's oldest and most highly esteemed citizens, died Thursday night at 10:45 o'clock at the family home, 508 Linn street in Highview. Mr. Williams was taken ill with the grip three weeks ago, and from the first his condition was serious. An attack of grip developed into pneumonia and for more than a week his demise had been almost hourly expected. Mr. Williams was a native of Pennsylvania but had resided in and near Meadville, Mo., for 31 years previous to moving to Chillicothe 21 years ago. He served throughout the Civil War and after coming to Missouri engaged in the fruit and nursery business. Mr. Williams was commander of Tindall Post, G.A.R. and the post attended the funeral in a body. Besides the widow he is survived by the following children: Mrs. Gertrude Cheney of Chillicothe, Mrs. H.E. Ishmael of Rossville, Kansas, Mrs. E.B. Myers, of Kansas City, and E.G. Williams of Chicago. Funeral services took place Sunday morning, conducted by E.E. Priest, of the Christian church, and the body was then taken to Meadville on the 10:45 Burlington train, where interment was made. Mrs. Williams was a member of American War Dads auxiliary, Fraternal Order of Eagles auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary and the War Mothers, all of Topeka. She was married to Charles W. Williams August 20, 1924, in Topeka. He died February 18, 1980. She also was preceded by a son, Ronald F. Williams, in June 1968. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Betty Ruth Euwer, Topeka; three brothers, Floyd Wilson, Wamego, Jesse Wilson, Wamego, and Ralph Wilson, Manhattan; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. | 10799 |  | Obituary- Williams, Henry 2 Shootings investigated HORTON — Law officers were using a metal detector Wednesday to search the yard around a mobile home here Wednesday as an investigation continued into the shooting deaths of two Horton men. The dead men, George “Hank” Williams, 51, and Jeffery Le Roy Lindsey, 24, were discovered in the mobile home on the west side of town Tuesday evening. A police spokesman said authorities had been notified by telephone call of the deaths at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators would not comment on the circumstances surrounding the deaths or about a weapon or weapons. However, Brown County Coroner Dr. Delbert Larson, Hiawatha, said the two died of multiple gunshot wounds. Williams’ most serious wounds were to the chest and lungs and Lindsey’s were to the head, Larson said. An autopsy was being performed by a Wichita pathologist, Larson said Wednesday. Horton Police Chief Don Groshong and agents of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation were at the shooting scene where a metal detector was being used in the barricaded yard Wednesday. The Brown County Sheriff’s Office also was involved in the investigation. | |

Williams, 95, Rossville, who died Friday, May 14, 1982, at a Topeka hospital. She was born May 10, 1887, at Corning, the daughter of Jay and Betsy A. Thompson Johnson. She lived in the Westmoreland-Olsburg area from 1904 until the early 1950s, when she moved to the Rossville-Willard area. Mrs. Williams was a farmer’s wife. She was a life member of Ladies Auxiliary to Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville. She married Ira T. Williams April 20, 1904, at Manhattan. He died March 18, 1966. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Becker, Grove, Okla.; a son, Ira Williams, Junction City; a brother, Clayton Johnson, Grand Junction, Ore.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery. The family met with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
