Obituary- Wilson, Andrew
Obituary- Wilson, Andrew
Death of Andy Wilson.

Mr. Andrew Wilson, known at one time throughout the state as the cattle king of Kansas, died last Sunday morning at 4 o'clock, from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy at his home in North Topeka. From 1869 until very recently Mr. Wilson has lived on his cattle ranch three miles south of Rossville, consequently he is well known to our citizens. The ranch embraced 6,000 acres of land and was one of the most extensive and perfect stock ranches in the state. Andy Wilson has probably handled as many cattle, transacted as much business and counted as much money in his career as any one man in our fair, young commonwealth. Mr. Wilson was a great Democrat and in 1876 gave the largest barbecue every held in the state at his farm near this city. Since that time he has met with many reverses and his splendid farm was sacrificed to satisfy creditors. He was forty-five years old at the time of departing this life and leaves a wife and six children.

Dannefer farm and the tract owned by A.B. Jamieson. All the original improvements on the Dannefer farm were placed there by Mr. Wilt.

After growing too old to look after his farm Mr. and Mrs. Wilt built a residence in Rossville and moved to town.

Mr. Wilt was a member of the Presbyterian church and a devout Christian. He had a wide circle of friends in the community and his decease will be mourned by them as well as his children to whom he was always a kind and loving father.

Who told us he had gone ahead.

Reuben Wilt Passes Over
Reuben L. Wilt who died in the Woodman Sanitarium at Woodman, Colo., Sept. 4, 1918 was buried Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka, assisted by Rev. J.R. Shaffer. The Modern Woodman and Masonic lodges assisted with their ceremonies. A very large crowd gathered to pay their respects of love and esteem Rossville people held for their departed fellow citizen.

Mr. Wilt was born at Blaine, Pa., April 26, 1868. He came to Kansas with the family when 9 years of age, and with the exception of a few years spent in Topeka as a clerk, the remaining years were spent in Rossville, being a successful business man as well as a faithful citizen, ever ready to help in the interest of the community.

His health had been failing rapidly the last year. Thinking he might be benefitted he spent last winter in the southern climate. He returned in April to be at the bedside of his mother who was ill and who was soon called home.

Having served the Modern Woodman lodge for years in an official capacity which won for him much love from the order and knowing of the great good work being carried on at Woodman, Colo., by them, seemed to draw him there, where he went the 14th of June and remained until his death.

He had a number of friends from home visit him while there and his two brothers and wife and children were with him a portion of the time, his wife being the only one with him when death came.

He spoke many times of the comforts of the Home and the kindness shown him and of the love the boys have for one another at such times.

He united with the Presbyterian church in the year 1896. He was married to Lillie Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Ellis, of Topeka, Jan., 17, 1900, and is survived by his wife and two daughters Aline and Ruby, his aged father, two brothers and four sisters all of Rossville.

Reuben had been associated with the business interests of Rossville many years, and as far as known there are none but bow their heads in mute sympathy and join the keener sorrow of the bereaved wife and family at his going away.

Obituary- Wilt, Reuben 2
He lived a simple unostentatious life full of good deeds and charity for his fellow man. One of his characteristics was his readiness to respond to the unfortunate or those in distress. In talking to a close friend the writer was reminded of a circumstance that illustrates his type of character. A number of years ago when Reuben was only a boy, a widow woman was left in destitute circumstances. After giving liberally himself, a public subscription was taken and he tried to hide his part of the benevolence.

To those who knew his tenderness of heart and unselfish disposition, his memory will ever remain with them while life lasts. He was not given to sham and cared only for the good and true.

The floral offerings were very elaborate and profuse and came from many sources as friends, the business men of the town, the church of which he was a member, the Modern Woodman and Masonic lodges, and from Hardware firms, whom the Wilt Bros. had dealt with for years in a business way.

Roy J. Wilt Dead

The funeral services of Roy J. Wilt, who died in the private hospital at Quenemo, Kansas, on Jan., 11th, 1904, were held in the Presbyterian Church at Rossville at two o'clock last Wednesday afternoon. The very large audience that gathered to pay their respects, testified to the love and esteem that Rossville had for her departed citizen. It took almost a half hour for the long line to file past the bier and take a last look at the silent sleeper. The Church was filled and scores of people could not even find standing room within. Nearly all the business houses closed their doors and business was suspended during the hour of service.

Roy was born at Blaine, Pa., Nov. 6, 1875. The following year his parents moved with him to Rossville, Kansas, where he has spent practical his short but active life. Five years ago he began to be troubled with hemorrhages of the lungs, that dread monitor of tuberculosis. Thinking a change of climate would be good for him, he went to New Mexico, and in company with his brother-in-law, Mr. Howard, started a cattle ranch. For a time his health improved, but he was not strong and being over ambitious, he worked harder than was well for him. He was one of the hardest riders and known as one of the best cattle boys in the south. But he spent so much time in the saddle, that this, with the exposure and hardships incident to ranch life, probably hastened the end.

For the past few months, he suffered intensely but uncomplainingly, and while everything was done that loving hearts and tender willing hands could do, still no relief came until the shadows of death began to gather. Then the pain seemed to leave him, and, he calmly looked into the faces of those who watched by his couch, and sank away as into a peaceful sleep.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, assisted by the Woodmen Lodge, of which he was an honored member.

The family have the sympathy of their many friends in their sad bereavement.

Obituary- Wilt, Samuel
Obituary- Wilt, Samuel
OBITUARY.
Samuel K. Wilt died at his home in this city Saturday October 26, 1895, at 11:30 A.M. Funeral services were held at the house Monday morning, at which Rev. Charles E. Kalb officiated. He used as a text the words recorded Revelation XIV:13: "And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yes, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." The preacher stated that the word "Blessed" meant happy. From the full text he gathered and urged that believers in Jesus Christ exist in a state of happiness between the day of their death and the resurrection morning, and that in the great day of final account the things that made for their happiness in the interval follow them and secure their full measure of joy when the Judge makes the eternal award; while the exact opposite is true of those who die out of Christ.

A very large number of relatives and friends assembled to take part in the last sad rites, and the procession to the cemetery was a long one.

Two beautiful floral designs rested on the casket. One was a pillow and the other a wreath. The pillow was presented by the brothers and sisters of the deceased. It bore this inscription: "Our Brother." The wreath was the gift of the Modern Woodmen. On it was inscribed: "M.W.A."

A number of beautiful and solacing hymns were sung by some of the intimate friends of the family.

---
The deceased was born near Blain, Perry County, Pennsylvania, on March 10th, 1863, making his age at the time of his death 32 years 7 months, and 16 days. He was next to the eldest of a family of nine children.

In November 1876 he came to Kansas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Wilt, who from that time onward resided on their farm, near Rossville. When Samuel was 21 years of age he commenced farming on his own account. Whilst engaged in raising his second crop he was seized with hemorrhage of the lungs, and was advised by medical authorities to give up his occupation and seek a change of climate, which he did. Accompanied by his mother, he took a trip to his old home in Pennsylvania. After rustreating [sic] six weeks or two months among hills and mountains and visiting with relatives and friends he returned home, seemingly benefited by his journey. After his return he resumed his farming occupation and followed it two years. Then he disposed of every thing once more and proceeded to Colorado, where he was in the employ of S.P. Gutshall, an esteemed friend. After remaining there six months he returned to his home, stout and hearty, looking rugged and well. In the spring of 1890 he and his brother, John R., embarked in the hardware business that previous to that time had been conducted by W.C. Sherman. In this business he was successfully engaged for five years. During the last three years of his life his health gradually failed. Two years ago he went to New Mexico to find relief, but received no benefit. Laster he went to Colorado once more, but all to no avail.

As the time of his departure drew near he realized more and more that Jesus, the Rock of Ages, is the only sure foundation on which to build one's hopes. On Sunday October 20th he sent for Rev. Charles E. Hall, and in the presence of the family and some of the officers and members of the Presbyterian church accepted Christ as his Savior and united with the church. In less than a week from that time earth's transient dream came to an end, and he passed onto the life that has no ending and to the reward that is sure and abiding.
