| 11001 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Christina 2 Christina Bahner Zickefoose Christina Ann Bahner Zickefoose, 98, Rossville, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Topeka. She was born Oct. 14, 1913, near Grove in Shawnee County, the daughter of E. Phillip and Rosa Ann (Dvorak) Bahner. She attended Stach, a one-room school-house, now part of the Kansas State Historical grounds. She roomed “in town” and graduated in 1931 from Delia High School where she played basketball on the same team with her older sister, Julia. Christina married S.F. Zickefoose in 1935 and moved with him to California, Mississippi, Georgia, Onaga, Kan., and returned to Rossville in 1947. She was a member of the Rossville Christian Church, serving as Sunday school superintendent for many years. She was past worthy matron of Loyal Chapter of the Eastern Star. She served two terms on the Rossville Grade School Board. Christina was employed by the Farm Bureau Insurance Co. as a secretary. She pursued a lifelong interest in gardening, collecting antiques, and needlework. She loved sports and closely followed KU basketball. Mrs. Zickefoose was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her son, Sam Zickefoose and his wife Marti of Prairie Village; her daughter, Jane Davis and her husband Allen of Topeka; grandchildren, Steven Davis of Wichita, Paul Davis of Kansas City, Kan., Brian Zickefoose of Prairie Village, and Anne Zickefoose Hu of New York City; and six great-grandchildren, Ellie, Nora, Fiona and James Davis, and Jack and Ethan Zickefoose. | 11003 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Effie Mrs. S.W. Zickefoose Dead Word was received yesterday (Monday) by Mrs. E.R. Haas, 419 Quincy Ave., of the death at Los Angeles of her mother, Mrs. Effie M. Zickefoose, widow of Sampson W. Zickefoose, formerly of the police department here and at one time chief of police of Wichita. Mrs. Zickefoose left here a week ago Saturday to visit Mrs. Kate Smith, a sister, at Los Angeles and became ill on the train on the way to California. Death followed an operation for hernia at a Los Angeles hospital. She is survived also by two sons, B.A. Zickefoose of Philadelphia and Harry Zickefoose, Dodge City, KS., and another sister, Mrs. J.W. Lowe of Holdenville, Ok., who accompanied her on the trip. Funeral services will be held here and burial probably will be in Rossville, Ks. --Kansas City Times ------------------ Funeral services for Mrs. S.W. Zickefoose, who died Saturday, Nov. 24, in a Los Angeles hospital following an operation, were held in the Rossville Presbyterian Church Monday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Apel. The body was interred in the Rossville cemetery by the side of her husband who passed away four years previous, lacking two hours of the same hour of his death four years ago. Mrs. Zickefoose was formerly Effie Lewis. She taught one term of school in the Cedar Bluff school northeast of town many years ago when her stepfather was pastor of the U.B. church. Several of her pupils were here for the funeral. Relatives here for the funeral were the three children, Benjamin Zickefoose, Philadelphia; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Zickefoose, Dodge City; Mr. ad Mrs. Elsworth Hass, Kansas City, the latter a daughter; and a number of old friends from Lecompton, her native town; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gustin, Delia; Mr. and Mrs. W.H. | 11004 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Francis 1 Francis M. Zickefoose was born July 15, 1856 in Ritchie county, Va., and died Saturday, March 27, 1915, aged 58 years. Mr. Zickefoose came to Kansas while a boy with his parents in December, 1869., and located in Shawnee county near Topeka, and with the exception of short periods has continued a resident of this county. On March 13, 1890, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Kuykendall of Rossville. To this union six children were born, five of whom are living. Mr. Zickefoose became a member of the Presbyterian Church in 1900 and has been a consistent member since. Besides the widow and children, three brothers, S.W. of Kansas City, W.H. and O.A. Zickefoose of Rossville, the father, and one sister, Mrs. Etta Gustin of Rossville, remain to mourn his loss. The body was laid to rest in the family lot by the side of his mother, Mary Zickefoose, a sister, Mrs. Phoebe Mitchell, and two brothers, Sam P. and Asbury J., who had preceded him. | |
| 11005 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Francis 2 Death of Marion Zickefoose News of the death of Marion Zickefoose, which occurred Saturday evening at 11:30 was received here Sunday by relatives. His death occurred in a hospital at Denver where he had been taken Saturday morning, suffering from pneumonia. Mr. Zickefoose had been sick for several days previous to being take to Denver. The news was a shock to the people of the community. He had been here only a month ago to attend the funeral of a relative and looked to be in better health than when he lived here. Mr. Zickefoose had been in Colorado since 1911, in the employ of the Union Pacific at Kit Carson as section foreman. Being a sufferer from asthma for many years, the high altitude of Colorado was recommended as a relief for his affliction. Mr. Zickefoose had been an employee of the Union Pacific for seventeen years. The remains were brought to Rossville Tuesday and the funeral was held at the Presbyterian church yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka. The Woodman lodge of which Mr. Zickefoose had long been a member, attended the funeral in a body and followed the remains to the cemetery, where interment was made in the family lot. | |
| 11006 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Frank FRANK E. ZICKEFOOSE Frank E. Zickefoose, 63, of Rossville died Wednesday at his home after a brief illness. His death wa3 unexpected. He had been under a specialist’s care for a few weeks with trouble in the middle ear, which caused him to overbalance easily and have dizzy spells, but the specialist felt confident that could be straightened out. He was born December 16, 1884, in Rossville and spent his entire life here. For a number of years he lived on a farm and conducted a twice daily milk route in Rossville, later retiring from that and took over the operation of a service station at Main Street and Highway 40-24. He was a past master of Hesperian Lodge No. 111 of Rossville and past district deputy grand master of the 72nd District of A. F. and A. M. of Kansas. Frank was devoted to his family, a friend to all and a trustworthy citizen. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lydia Zickefoose, of the home; one son Dr. S. F. Zickefoose, Rossville; one brother, Henry Zickefoose, Stapleton, Neb.; three grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p. m., Friday at the Rossville Christian church. Burial will be in the Rossville cemetery with Hesperian Lodge, A. F. & A. M. in charge. | |
| 11007 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Harry Harry Zickefoose Graveside services were held at the Rossville Cemetery Thursday, September 18, 1975 for Harry Zickefoose of Kansas City, Mo., who was found dead in his hotel room. He apparently died of a heart attack. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S.W. (Pet) Zickefoose, early settlers in the Rossville community. He was born in Kansas City on July 8, 1907. His wife, Thelma, died in 1967. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Marguerite Haas of Kansas City, Mo., and one brother, Ben Zickefoose of Springfield Mo. | |
| 11008 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Jennie 1 Death of Mrs. Jennie Zickefoose. Mrs. Jennie Zickefoose passed away yesterday at 12:80 from the result of a stroke of paralysis some time during early Wednesday morning She was found lying on the floor of her bedroom by her brother Frank Beal, about 6:30 a. m. How long she lay on the floor is not known. Mrs. Zickefoose never regained her faculties enough to be able to talk although she rallied enough to recognize persons at her bedside and use her arms. The passing away of Mrs. Zickefoose was a great shock to the people of Rossville as she has always enjoyed the best of health. Mrs. Zickefoose was 50 years of age on the 18th of this month. She was born McDonough county, Illinois, but for the past 47 years has been a resident of Shawnee county. Beside her two sons, Frank am Henry she is survived by three brothers, Frank Beal, of this city, John Beal of Weiser, Idaho, and George Beal, of Stapleton. Neb., and one sister, Mrs. Anna Cox, of Reading, Kansas. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 1:30 from the Christian church. | |
| 11009 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Jennie 2 Jennie R. Beal was born in Bushnell, Illinois, February 18, 1865 and died February 24, 1915, at Rossville, Kansas, age 50 years 6 days. Her parents came to Kansas when she was but two years of age and since that time she has resided in or neat Rossville, attending school in the first schoolhouse erected here. She was married to Samuel P. Zickefoose, December 25, 1883, at the home of her parents. To this union was born two sons. They lived on a farm until the death of her husband, Sept 2, 1885. She lived with her parents for a few years and then moved to Rossville to educate her boys. She joined the Christian church here in February, 1894 and has lived all earnest Christian life. Her entire time has been spent in aiding and caring for her loved ones, never tiring in her efforts, to assist a friend in need. Now she is at rest. She has heard “well done thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord.” She leaves two sons, one sister, three brothers six grandchildren and many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss. | |
| 11010 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Leverne Leverne Zickefoose Funeral services for Leverne Zickefoose, 17 year old high school sophomores killed in a truck and box car crash at Neelyville, last Wednesday night, will be held at the Christian church next Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment will be held in the City cemetery. Rev. J. L. Wilkinson, pastor of the Christian church, will officiate at the service. The youth is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Zickefoose, who reside three miles west of the city; an older brother, John of New Madrid; a sister, Lynette and two grandmothers, Mrs. A. E. | 11011 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Maggie Maggie Elizabeth Zickefoose Maggie Elizabeth Wood was born Oct. 18, 1869, in Steuben county New York. She came to Kansas at the age of twelve and lived in this and surrounding communities the rest of her life. At an early age she united with the United Brethren church. On Oct. 20, 1894, she was united in marriage to W.H. Zickefoose and to this union were born three sons and two daughters. Two sons and one daughter preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, William H. Zickefoose; a son, Elmer, of Emmett; a daughter, Mrs. Vivian Kovar of Merriam, Kan.; a brother, Dennis Wood of Grantville, and a half brother, Emmett Wood of Guthrie, Okla.; five grandchildren, Hazel and Gilbert Kovar, Margaret and Lloyd Moore and Dixie Jo Zickefoose; a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 2 o'clock at the Rossville Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. James W. Reed. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Peter Navarre, Mrs. E.G. Griswold, Mrs. C.E. Gresser and Mrs. Margaret Witter, with Miss Edith Higginbotham as accompanist. The pallbearers were Mssrs. Ed Kovar, Clifford Reser, Irvin Reser, Frederic Zickefoose, C.E. Cless and Frank Wood. Interment was in the Rossville cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gustin of Leavenworth drove to Rossville, Wednesday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Wm. | 11012 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Peter The Passing Of An Old Resident Peter Zickefoose died last Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Gustin, after being sick over a week. Death was caused by uremic poisoning. Mr. Zickefoose was one of the oldest settlers of this township. He had passed his 86th birthday Feb. 25, this year. With the exception of a few years spent in Osage county, Kansas, Mr. Zickefoose had lived here continuously since coming to Kansas in 1869. The funeral was held Sunday at the Gustin home conducted by Rev. Manion of Olive Branch Church, and interment made in the Rossville cemetery. Peter Zickefoose came to Kansas in Dec., 1869, from West Virginia, first locating one mile east of Topeka, a short time and moved seven miles west, remained one year and moved one mile west of Silver Lake, remaining five years; then moved two miles north of Rossville, remained four years and moved to another farm in August, 1880. Was born in Pendleton county, Va., Feb. 26, 1831. Remained in native county until the spring of 1847, following farming with his father, then moved to Richey county and remained until coming to Kansas. Was a member of the state Militia and had some trouble with the Confederates during the war on account of his loyal sentiments. Was Deputy Sheriff of Richey county during the war, and as the sheriff would not ride in the south part of the county, he performed that perilous duty and had frequent encounters with the Rebs; owned a very fleet mare and being acquainted with every foot of the ground and the mountain path, always managed to elude his pursuers. When Hammond and Jones' Confederate Command made their raids in the spring of 1863, Mr. Zickefoose saved two of his father's horses by putting them in a smokehouse. He was married in September, 1855, in Green county, Pa. to Miss Mary Hammer, a native of E. Va. The surviving members of his family are: W.H. Zickefoose, O.A. Zickefoose, and Mrs. Ed Gastin, all of Rossville; S.W. Zickefoose, Kansas City, Mo. CARDS OF THANKS We desire to express our sincere appreciation for all favors shown us during the illness and after the death of our father, Peter Zickefoose. --The Children; 29 March 1917 Mrs. Anna Heiland, of Kit Carson, Colo., was here Sunday for the Zickefoose funeral. She went to Topeka from her Monday to visit her daughter, Mrs. Ida Nagel. Mrs. Heiland will be better remembers as Mrs. Marion Zickefoose. --29 March 1917 Henry Zickefoose came down from Stapleton, Neb., Saturday evening to attend the funeral of his grandfather. | 11013 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Samuel F. DR. SAMUEL ZICKEFOOSE Dr. Samuel F. Zickefoose, 64, Rossville, died Saturday, June 12, 1976 in a Topeka hospital where he was readmitted several days earlier. He had cancer. He was a veterinarian and practiced in the Rossville and Onaga communities many years. He was born September 22, 1911 at Rossville and received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Kansas State University in 1935. Dr. Zickefoose was employed by the U. S. Bureau of Animal Industry from 1935 to 1938 and later from 1951 to 1965. He was a government meat inspector before he retired. He was a member of the Christian Church and Hesperian Lodge No. 111, AF&AM, both at Rossville. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville. He was married September 15, 1935 to Christina Bahner in Shawnee County. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Samuel F. Zickefoose, Jr., Fairway; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Davis, Manhattan, and three grandsons. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (today) in the Christian Church at Rossville. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Casket bearers were: Dr. James Brennan, Laird French, Leo Gannon, John Davis, Ralph Page and Elmon Lambert. ZICKEFOOSE CHILD DEAD Word was received here today of the death of Master Samuel Zickefoose, 5 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Zickefoose of Stapleton, Nebr. The message stated the family would arrive today with the body and funeral services will be probably Saturday. ---------------- Mrs. Henry Zickefoose and her children, a son and three daughters while enroute here last Thursday with the body of the youngest child had their car wrecked near Riley Kansas and a car from Rossville had to be sent to their assistance. Samuel Pet Zickefoose was born Dec. 24, 1927, at Stapleton, Nebraska. He passed away Feb. 22, 1933, at the place of his birth. He leaves to mourn his early passing, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Zickefoose, six sisters, Marjorie, Roma, Lola, Elma, Thelma and Henrietta; and two brothers Vernon and Glenn, all of the home address; also his grandmother, Mrs. Ellen Berkey, of Russell, Kansas and numerous other relatives. The body was brought to Rossville overland, arriving last Friday morning. The short funeral service was held that afternoon at the Chas. Berkey home southeast of Rossville, in charge of Rev. Horton of the M.E. church, after which he was laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery. Four young men, three of them cousins, served as pallbearers. | 11016 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Samuel W. 1 VETERAN PEACE OFFICER BURIED HERE SATURDAY The body of the late S. W. Zickefoose, chief of detectives at Wichita and one of the most widely known peace officers in Kansas, who died in Wichita Tuesday morning of last week, arrived in Topeka at 4:55 o’clock Friday afternoon. Topeka police officers, mounted and afoot, formed an honorary escourt from the Santa Fe depot to the Conwell funeral home where the body lay in state unitl Saturday noon when it was brought to Rossville. The funeral service here at the Presbyterian church was short, including a prayer service conducted by Rev. G. C. Albin and a number of songs. Hesperian Lodge, A. F. & A. M., had charge of the Masonic service at the cemetery. The deceased gentleman was a member of Albert Pike lodge of Wichita. Mr. Zickefoose was born in Richie county, West Virginia, December 4, 1867. His parents were descendants of old Dutch families, which settled in New York when it was first populated, and later moving to Virginia. When he was 2 years old, he came to Kansas with his parents and settled in Rossville where he spent his boyhood. Early in life he left Rossville to become a peace officer, first serving as a member of the Topeka force. He also was a Santa Fe special agent and a member of the Kansas City police department. He was chief of detectives on the Kansas City police department when he resigned to become chief of police at Wichita seven years ago. Altogether, he had served 38 years as a peace officer. In 1895 he married Miss Effie M. Lewis, of Lecompton. Besides his widow, he is survived by three children, Benjamin A. Zickefoose, who is in the navy at New London, Conn,, Miss Marguerite Zickefoose and Harry Zickefoose, both of Wichita; two brothers, W. H. Zickefoose, of Rossville and O. A. Zickefoose, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and a sister, Mrs. E. J. Gustin of Maple Hill. | |
| 11017 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Samuel W. 2 S. W. ZICKEFOOSE IS DEAD Samuel Warner Zickefoose, more familiarly known to Rossville people as ‘‘Pet" chief of detectives of Wichita, and formerly chief of detectives of Kansas City, Mo., died at Wesley hospital in Wichita at 1:30 o’clock Tuesday morning. Although Chief Zickefoose had been ill several weeks from infection of the gall bladder, the immediate cause of death, which was unexpected, was an attack of embolism sending a blood clot to the heart or brain. Death followed almost immediately. Monday the detective’s condition had improved to such an extent that he had planned to return to his home. He had been cheerful throughout the day and eaten his meals with apparent relish. Members of his family, believing that he was on the road to recovery were not at the bedside when he died. Only a nurse was present, it was said. Mr. Zickefoose entered law enforcement work at Wichita August 21, 1917, when he was appointed as chief of police by Louis R. Ash, Wichita's first city manager. One of his first official acts was to order a general clean-up of gambling and tenderloin districts. His law enforcement measures made him many warm friends as well as bitter enemies. After considerable turmoil in po¬lice circles Chief Zickefoose was removed about May 1, 1821. His successor remained but two months. Then another was named. Soon after his removal the office of detective chief was created and Mr. Zickefoose was named to the place, which he had held since. Mr. Zickefoose was chief of detectives in Kansas City from 1911 to 1913, in the administration of Governor Hadley. He entered the police department there as a probationary patrolman June 17, 1909, following a long career in the Santa Fe service. September 1 of the same year he was made a detective. His work of breaking up a gang of box car thieves and arresting them attracted the attention of the police commissioners. August 22, 1910, he was promoted to a sergeant of detectives and assigned to the command of detective headquarters at night. Funeral services will be held in the Rossville Presbyterian church next Saturday at 2 o’clock and the body interred in Rossville cemetery Beside his widow he is survived by a daughter and two sons. The delay in the funeral is to permit his son Ben time to arrive from Connecticut. Two brothers, Mr. W. H. Zickefoose. of this community, and Mr. O. A. Zickefoose of Ft. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett before moving to St. Marys in 1993 when she became a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. On June 2,1943 Teresa was united in marriage to James Zima. He preceded her in death on July 24, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Clarence Rezac; and two sisters, Lucille Brunin and Bernadine McEnroe. He was born in Switzerland, January 15, 1857 and came to the United States when he was three months old and his parents settled in Wisconsin. He came to Kansas from Illinois in 1877. He came to the plains as a cattle herder and then became camp cook. After a number of years residence in Rossville he moved to Dover where he made his home until his death. He was married October 19, 1882 to Ida Spicer. To this union were born nine children, Cora, Nora, Barbara, William, Henry, John, Alice, Samuel and Fred, all of whom survive. He also is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Amelia White, Manhattan, and Mrs. Martha Pemberton, Shawnee, Okla.; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Burial was in the Dover cemetery. | |

Very little of his early life was known. He took his family and left his native homeland to avoid religious persecution as well as military conscription in the Austria-Hungarian armies, moving first to the Volhynia area under the control of the Russian Tsar and later to America in Nov. 1891. It was also thought that he had a brother, Jan who may have immigrated to the United States. His death left his widow who did not speak the language of the country in which she lived as well as seven minor children to survive him. | |

She was born May 21, 1904, near Delia, the daughter of Ludvig Syverin and Ella Lucretia Keller Thompson. She had lived in the Delia community all of her life. She was graduated from Wash¬ington Township High School in 1923, and taught at Stach School prior to her marriage to Joseph Zlatnik on September 24, 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Zlatnik engaged in farming, and were married for 60 years prior to his death on March 2, 1985. She continued teaching in church classes and for a number of years was active in teaching the Menninger Bible Study Course in the Delia area. She was active in community affairs, including the women’s Farm Bureau organizations, which went through several changes of name and is now known AS Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS). Mrs. Zlatnik was always interested in the education of young people, and served as president of the Delia Board of Education for 25 years. After the school consoli¬dation movement, she continued to serve on the Board of Education for U.S.D. 321 until she finished her term. An active member of the Delia Presbyterian Church from early adulthood, she served in many official capacities, including clerk of the session, elder, church musician, and Sunday school teacher. In ad-dition, she was active in the women’s groups of the church from Ladies’ Aid to United Pres¬byterian Women. Surviving her are two sons, J. Laverne Zlatnik, Delia, and Roger L. Zlatnik, Topeka; four daughters, Rosella J. Hoglund, Overland Park, Evelyne R. Parkerson, Decatur, GA, Mary Alice Huntsman and Judith L. She was married to Anthonin G.A. Zlatnik, on Oct. 13, 1881. To this union were torn five sons and two daughters; Fred J. of Morrill, Nebr., Anthony, John, Joseph and Anna of Delia and Frank of Twin Falls, Ida. A daughter, Milly died at the age of 25 years while engaged as a settlement worker in Pennsylvania under the Home Missions Board of the Presbyterian Church. The Family with three of the children moved to America in 1891, making their first home near Cuba, Kans. From there going to Olivia, Minn., and finally settling on a farm in what is now the Delia Community about the year 1896 where she has resided to the day of her death. Early in life she became affiliated with the Evangelical Reformed Church, and in America became a member of the Presbyterian Church. To her, her Christian faith was a thing of reality. She would speak of her faith without show but with conviction. She knew the friendship of Jesus. She departed to be with him on Feb. 25, 1942 at the age of 85 years, and eight months. She was preceded in death by her husband who died Oct. 15, 1902. She leaves to mourn her going, six children, 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and many friends. | |

There are six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Roger grew up in Delia, Kansas and graduated from Washburn University. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War. Roger spent most of his career in furniture sales for Ed Marling’s and Lewis Furniture Stores. Prior to retirement, he served as a guide and then Assistant Sargant of Arms for the Kansas Senate at the Kansas State Capitol. | 11037 |  | Obituary- Zlatnik, Velma 1 Velma F. Zlatnik Delia-Velma F. Zlatnik died Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at the Midland Hospice House following a courageous battle against leukemia. She was born November 27, 1928 near Delia, the daughter of Evan and Louise Hayden Lewelling. She attended High Prairie Grade School and graduated from Soldier Rural High School in 1946. Velma attended Kansas State College and obtained an emergency certificate and taught school at Cedar Hill and High Prairie in Jackson county and Forest Bluff in Shawnee county. Mrs. Zlatnik worked for USD # 321 for 27 years as a cook-manager and later as a para in the Interrelated Resource room at Rossville Grade School. She was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church for 59 years where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She also was the church pianist for many of those years. Mrs. Zlatnik was selected as the Jackson County Extension Homemaker of the Year in 1988 while she was a member of the Delia Up & Atom Extension Unit. She was an excellent cook and was well known for her pies and breads. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Evan D. Lewelling in 1963. On August 8, 1948 she was united in marriage to J. Laverne Zlatnik. He survives on the farm where he and Velma lived all of their married life. They were the parents of three children, Mark (Linda) Zlatnik, Shell Knob, MO, Carolyn (Terry) Orozco, Topeka and Alan (Tammy) Zlatnik, Rossville; seven grandchildren, Julie (Gary) Spring, Sheila Podrebarac, Scott (Isabel) Zlatnik, Melissa (Kelly) Smith, Joe Zlatnik, Duane Zlatnik and Lexi Zlatnik; seven great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Interment will be in the Delia Cemetery. Mrs. Zlatnik will lie in state Friday, December 28, 2007 from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and the family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. | 11038 |  | Obituary- Zlatnik, Velma 2 Velma F. Zlatnik Velma F. Zlatnik, Delia, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at the Midland Hospice House following a courageous battle against leukemia. She was born Nov. 27, 1928, near Delia, the daughter of Evan and Louise Hayden Lewelling. She attended High Prairie Grade School and graduated from Soldier Rural High School in 1946. Velma attended Kansas State College and obtained an emergency certificate and taught school at Cedar Hill and High Prairie in Jackson county and Forest Bluff in Shawnee county. Mrs. Zlatnik worked for USD No. 321 for 27 years as a cook-manager and later as a para in the Interrelated Resource room at Rossville Grade School. She was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church for 59 years where she taught Sunday school and Bible school. She also was the church pianist for many of those years. Mrs. Zlatnik was selected as the Jackson County Extension Homemaker of the Year in 1988 while she was a member of the Delia Up & Atom Extension Unit. She was an excellent cook and was well known for her pies and breads. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Evan D. Lewelling in 1963. On Aug. 8, 1948, she was united in marriage to J. Laverne Zlatnik. He survives on the farm where he and Velma lived all of their married life. | 11039 |  | Obituary- Zook, Edna Edna Zook Dead Edna Zook, only daughter of Frank and Daisy Zook, died April 15, 1910, at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Hawks, in this city after an illness of several weeks from scarlet fever. The end came unexpectedly, as it was said she had passed the critical stage of the disease and her symptoms bid fair for her recovery. But a sudden relapse Friday, proved too strong for her delicate condition, and in spite of tender nursing and medical attention she passed into the mystic world whose portals are death. Edna Zook was born in Rossville, Nov. 22, 1896 and was 14 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Zook live on the farm four miles north of Rossville and Edna had been staying in town to attend school. She was in the sixth grade with Miss Turney as teacher. Edna was a member of the Friends Church by birthright, but had intimately associated herself with the Presbyterian Church and Sunday School. Owing to the contagious nature of the disease the funeral was held at the house Sunday afternoon where Rev. Lamb of the Presbyterian Church conducted a short, yet impressive, service. The afternoon was cold and blustering but the yard was full of sympathizing friends and neighbors. The interment took place in the City cemetery. | |

Mrs. Zook was past 75 years of age. She had been in poor health for about a year and for the past 16 weeks was bedfast. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon and the body interred in the Concordia cemetery. Two sons, J.F. of Rossville and Aaron, of Cook, Neb., and three daughters, Mrs. Carl Steele, Sterling, Kansas, Mrs. John Gano, and Mrs. Fred Snook, both of Concordia, survive. Theresa Griffiths, Delia (Judy Hall's sister-in-law), Ginny Trygg, Linda Gilchrist and Chris Gassen, all of Topeka, and Rita Greene, San Antonio, Texas; three sons, John Burghart and Rick Burghart, both of Topeka, and George Burghart III, Valley Falls; two sisters, Eva Marlow, Derby, and Mildred Love, Forest Park, Ga.; 19 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 .m. Tues. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Burghart will like in state from 2 until 9 pm. For several years he had been in the grocery business at 401 Lafayette street, in Topeka. Funeral services were in Conwell's North Topeka chapel at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon and burial was in Topeka cemetery. Mr. O'Shaughnessy is survived by his son Jack jr.
