Mrs. Wyatt is survived by her husband, J.G. Wyatt of the home; three brothers, Merton Raymond of Garnett, Charles Raymond of Kansas City and George Raymond of Garnett, four sisters, Mrs. Lois Lankard of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Rhoda Tyler of Garnett, Mrs. Ruth Turner of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Mary Krifteworth of Plainfield, Ill.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday at Parker Mortuary with Rev. Alex Eckert officiating. Burial was at Garnett, Kansas. | |

She was born Nov. 15,1913, in Cherryvale, to Bert and Bessie Paige Hayes, and lived in St. Marys many years. She was a hairdresser and owned and operated a beauty shop in St. Marys 60 years before she retired. She was a member of the Christian Church, in Rossville, and active in the United Methodist Church, in St. Marys. She was a member of Loyal Chapter No. 176 of Order of Eastern Star, in Silver Lake, and the auxiliary to Hoy-Heim Post No. 178 of the American Legion 34 years, in St. Marys. She married Chester Wyker in 1954. He died in 1967. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Pamela Pace, St. Marys; a brother, Lowell Hayes, in Colorado; two sisters, Pauline Henderson, Carrollton, Mo., and Bernita Niddiffer, Pampa, Texas; and three stepgrandsons. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery south of Belvue. Mrs. Wyker will lie in state from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys, where the auxiliary to Hoy-Heim Post No. 178 of the American Legion will conduct a service at 7 p.m. and visitation will follow until 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Marys Manor, Heart of America Hospice or the organization of the donor’s choice. | |
| 10953 |  | Obituary- Wyker, Leora 2 LeOra M. Hayes Wyker LeOra Mae Hayes Wyker, 88, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, at the St. Marys Manor. She was born November 15, 1913, in Cherryvale, the daughter of Bert and Bessie Paige Hayes. LeOra and her family moved to the Rossville community where she attended both grade and high school. After a beauty apprenticeship, she opened a beauty shop in St. Marys, retiring after 60 years of hair care. LeOra lived in St. Marys for many years. She was a member of the Rossville Christian Church, and was active in the United Methodist Church in St. Marys. She was a member of [tive] in the United Methodist Church in St. Marys. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Loyal Chapter No. 176 in Silver Lake, and. was a member of the American Legion Hoy Heim Auxiliary Unit 178 for 34 years in St. Marys. In 1954, she married Chester Wyker. He died in 1967. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Glen Hayes; and a sister, Audrey Gelsinger. Surviving her are a stepdaughter, Pamela Pace, St. Marys; a brother, Lowell Hayes, in Colorado; two sisters, Pauline Henderson, Carrollton, MO, and Bernita Niddiffer, Pampa, TX; three grandsons; six nephews and three nieces. A graveside service was at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday (this morning) in the Greenwood Cemetery south of Belvue. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery, Belvue. A family visitation at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home was Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:00. The American Legion Hoy Heim Auxiliary Unit 178 and Loyal Chapter No. 176 conducted memorial services at the funeral home. | 10957 |  | Obituary- Yates, Harold 1 Harold ‘Lee’ Yates Harold “Lee” Yates, 53, passed away peacefully at his Silver Lake home on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 10, 1958, in Wamego, the son of Connie Wilburn Yates and Harold Jay Yates, both of whom have passed before him. Lee graduated from Wamego High School. He worked in the interior construction and drywall trade for more than 30 years. Lee married Suzie Redmon in 1978 and they had 34 wonderful years together. They were blessed with two daughters, Amanda Yates of Overland Park and Jessie Yates of Silver Lake. He loved to proudly support his daughters as they participated in their many sports activities. Besides his wife and daughters, Lee is survived by his other mother, Joan Yates of Independence; sister, Mary Jo Beiter and family of Lenexa; brother, Lawrence Yates of Houston, Texas. Memorial services were set for March 10 at Bethel Community Church, 6944 N.W. Landon Road, Topeka. He was born August 10, 1958 in Wamego, the son of Connie Wilburn Yates and Harold Jay Yates both who have passed before him. Lee graduated from Wamego High School. | 10959 |  | Obituary- Yingling, Larry LARRY JOE YINGLING Larry Joe Yingling, 79, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013. He was born July 23, 1934 in Topeka, the son of Dorwin E. and Sara Jane (Carothers) Yingling. He graduated from Seaman High School in 1952. He founded, owned and operated Yingling Auto Service Center and was a cattle rancher. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Topeka. Larry married Peggy Eileen Fry on October 9, 1953 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include his son, Brian (Paula), son, Blake (Jackie), daughter, Cynthia (John) Mitchell, St. Mary’s and daugh¬ter, Calla (Kelly) Haggard and sister, Shirley Farrell. Larry has 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Brent. Larry was cremated and a memorial service was at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Second Presbyterian Church, 210 N.W. Menninger Rd, Topeka, KS 66617. Mrs. Yingling owned and operated the Dynamite Cafe on W. 6th in Topeka, and later operated the Highway 24 Auction and Pin Oak Antiques, She also had worked at the Ira Price Cafe in North Topeka. She was born June 1, 1914, in Delia, the daughter of Jerome and Cynthia Lemon Carothers. She lived several years with Frank and Vera Haynes at Grantville. She was graduated from Seaman High School. Mrs. Yingling was a member of the United Methodist Church in Grantville and a seniors bowling league at Gage Bowl North in Topeka. She volunteered at the Veterans Administration Hospital, and for the Red Cross, Easter Seals, and Can Help. She was married to Dorwin E. Yingling March 22, 1933, in Topeka. He died in 1974. A grandson, Brent Yingling, died in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley S. Farrell, Topeka; a son, Larry Yingling, Topeka; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Grantville. Burial will be in Grantville Cemetery. Mrs. Yingling will lie in state after 11 a.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Yocum, 68, Kansas City, Ks., died Thursday, March 15, 1984, at a hospital in Omaha, Nebr., where she and her husband were visiting a son and his family. She was born May 25, 1915, at Rossville, the daughter of Dewey and Florence Countryman, where she attended the Rossville Schools, graduating with the class of 1933. She was married June 18th, 1937, to Ray R. Yocum in Topeka, where they lived until 1941 when they moved to Kansas City, Ks. She leaves her husband, Ray R. Yocum, two sons, Gary Yocum, Omaha, Nebr., Kenneth Yocum, Ramstein, Germany, and three grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Countryman, Topeka; five sisters, Mrs. Ruby Davis, Ozawkie, Mrs. Betty Barrett, Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Vena May Thompson, Delia, Mrs. Irene Wade, Ogden, Utah, and Nellie Countryman, Rossville. Yocum, Pioneer Business Man, Dead After Brief Illness The people of Rossville were shocked beyond expression last Friday morning about 10:30 when the word was passed telling of the decease of Dave Yocum at his home. Many had seen him as he passed along the street as usual earlier in the day to open his store. His last illness began during the night, but he rallied and felt capable of going about his business as usual. However, sometime after he opened the store he began feeling ill again and sought his physicians. He was advised to go home, which he did. It was only a short time thereafter until he expired. The deceased gentleman was the last of our early day business men. During his business career he was successfully painter, decorator, restaurant man and general merchant. During his long career here he had gained the respect and esteem of the people and was known as a square man, generous and kindhearted to the extreme. The last venture in the mercantile business began only a few months ago, after a year's absence while he and Mrs. Yocum lived on their farm northeast of town. Mrs. Yocum plans to carry on as usual in the store to take care of the nice little business that has naturally returned to its founder. David W. Yocum was born in Perry County, Pennsylvania, April 27, 1858 and died on April 1st, 1927 at his home in Rossville. He came to Kansas in the year 1880 and since that time has resided in and near Rossville. He was united in marriage in 1901 to Rebecca Vorhies. In 1905 he affiliated with the Methodist church and until the time of his departure was one of their most faithful members. For the past few years he has been engaged in the mercantile business in Rossville. He was honest in all business transactions and respected by his fellow citizens. He was always willing and ready to assist in the work of the church and the upbuilding of his community. The funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 3rd at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church. Rev. G.C. Albin of Topeka the officiating minister was assisted by Rev. Pritchett. Interment was in the Rossville cemetery. Those who survive are, his wife, one son, three grandchildren, two sisters, and three brothers. [From 7 Apr 1927] | |
| 10963 |  | Obituary- Yocum, Earl Obituary. In memory of Earl Yocum Earl Yocum was born January 3rd, 1886, died Feb. 24, 1903, in St. Louis, Mo., at the home of his aunt, Mrs. D.F. Brown, where in the presence of his loving and devoted mother and dear aunt Mary he passed his young life over to the keeping of his Heavenly Father. Earl was sick only one short week with pneumonia when the Father called him home. He was employed as stock boy in the large dry goods store of D.C. Crawford and the manager said of him: "He was the best boy we have had in this department for 16 years - always so truthful, honest, polite and obliging. Ever ready to do the work mapped out for him. We never expect to get a boy to fill the place as Earl filled it." Take courage, mother, father and brother. Blessed hope, sweet consolation that enables one when starting down the slippery banks of the Jordan of death, when the dashing waves of that remorseless river are already throwing the icy spray of its water around the soul, to look beyond the dark stream to the bright fields, to the pearly gates to the golden paved streets and finally up to the throne of the eternal King. To lean calmly and trustingly upon that arm that never wearies and place implicit confidence in him who has said "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." Take courage, dear mother, and hope to the end of the night will soon pass and the day will soon dawn, then death will sadden no hearts and dim no eyes for the Lord will wipe away all tears. A Friend [Feb 1903] --- Earl Yocum, aged 17 years, died at his aunt's home in St. Louis, Mo., Tuesday of pneumonia. The remains were shipped to this city and funeral services held in the Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Nelson, yesterday. She was 83 years old. She had been a resident of St. Marys community for many years until last summer when she went to make her home with her daughter because of ill health. She was a sister of the late Peter Jackson, early day resident of this community. | 10965 |  | Obituary- Yocum, Emma Emma Yocum Passes Away Emma L. (Pageler) Yocum went to be with her Lord and Heavenly family on Thanksgiving night, November 25, 2021, at the St. Marys Manor. Emma was born on January 5, 1934, on a farm north of Belvue, KS and spent her entire life in the St. Marys, KS area. She was the only daughter of Reinhardt and Vaneta (Cox) Pageler. She attended a one-room school north of Belvue, Belvue Grade School, and graduated from St. Marys High School in 1952. After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart. She worked as a clerk for Blue Cross and Blue Shield until she became a stay-at-home mother to raise their 4 boys. She later worked for the Standard Gas Station in St. Marys. She worked as a para-professional for USD 321 from where she retired in 1996. Emma filled her life with many activities in the community, including teaching Sunday School at St. Marys United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed dancing with the Swinging Squares. She and her husband, Nick were active in their children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Clarence “Nick” Yocum. They were married on September 13, 1953, at the Evangelical & Reformed Church-Wells Creek. Together they raised 4 sons. Steve Yocum, Lawrence, KS; John Yocum (Jennifer) Lawrence, KS; David Yocum (Kristi) St. George KS; James Yocum (Kerri) St. Marys KS. Emma and Nick are blessed with 9 Grandchildren. Travis Yocum (Lori), Nichol Gallegos (Zack), Eva Parkin (Levi), Ethan Yocum (Faith), Brandon Yocum (Becca), Jenna Yocum (Matthew Klotz), Ryan Yocum (Karlee), Hayley Smith (John), and Trevor Yocum. They also have 12 Great-Grandchildren: Alex, Noah, Anna Beth, Zackary, and Thaddeus Gallegos; Aubrey Carrier & Olivia Klotz; Pierce Yocum; Avah & Cale Yocum; Weiss Parkin, and one on the way. Her life will be celebrated on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Marys United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Valley View Cemetery in St. Marys. She was born February 23, 1898, in Belvue, the daughter of Samuel Heston and Ethelinda George Heston. She lived in St. Marys since 1917. Mrs. Yocum had been recognized as the oldest member of the United Methodist Church in St. Marys. She was married to George A. Yocum. He died June 20,1972. Survivors include two sons, George Yocum, Kansas City, Mo., and C. Nicholas Yocum, St. Marys; eight daughters, Winifred Kerwin, Rossville, Kathryn Palmer, Wakarusa, Georgia Mae Forbes, Lake Stevens, Wash., Helen Gooden, Topeka, Marguerite Petty, Olathe, Alice Miller, Kingsville, Mo., Betty Hatfield, Manassas, Va., and Patricia Shove, Silver Lake; three brothers, Glen Heston, Kansas City, Kan., Carl Heston, Topeka, and David Heston, Oskaloosa; a sister, Pearl Timmons, Topeka; 35 grandchildren; 52 great-grand-children; and five great-great- grandchildren. Before she went to Topeka about 17 years ago, she was a resident of Rossville for about 30 years. She was the widow of the late Dave Yocum, longtime Rossville merchant. Born at Shannon City, Iowa, June 14, 1866, she came to Rossville with her parents, in 1900. She was a member of the Potwin Presbyterian Church W. C. T. U. and SBA. Surviving are four brothers, Charles and Elton, of Rossville; Frank Vorhies of Shannon City, Iowa, and Roy Vorhies of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Webb of Laurel, Neb. and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Rossville Presbyterian Church with Dr. H. L. Nelson of Topeka, officiating. | 10969 |  | Obituary- Yoder, Maude Maude Ethel Yoder Maude Ethel Yoder was born in Soldier, Kansas, August 22, 1888, and passed away at Council Grove, Kansas, September 16, 1936. She moved with her parents to Rossville at the age of 1 year. After her graduation from the Rossville high school she taught three years, going from here to Philadelphia, Pa., where she entered the Blockley Hospital Training School for nurses. She was there about two years when she was called home by the death of her sister. She continued her nurse training in Kansas City for a short time and was married to John N. Mrs. Yoder was a member of the S.B.A. lodge, the Business and Professional Womans Club besides various other clubs in Council Grove, and with her husband was active in the business and social affairs of the city. She is survived by her husband, John N. Yoder, her mother, Mrs. J.E. White, three sisters, Mrs. Ida McAdams, Minco, Okla., Mrs. F.R. Rice, Kansas City, Kans., Miss Grace White of Rossville; four brothers, Arthur E., C.P., and A.N. of Rossville, and James A. of Waukesha, Wis. | 10970 |  | Obituary- York, Charles Chas. York Dead News has been received by Rossville friends of the death of Charles York, 73, who passed away at 5 a.m. July 10. The immediate cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage. Mr. York fell from the roof of his home on July 2 and never reganed conscousness [sic regained consciousness]. Internment [sic interment] was in Englewood Park, Thursday, July 13. Mr. and Mrs. York are former Rossville residents. He spent his early life here on the farm southwest of town owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Berkey. Beside his widow, he is survived by one son Lawrence. Rossville friends have received word from Los Angeles, that Charlie York, fell from the roof of his home and was dangerously injured. The accident occurred Sunday, July 2nd and at the time the letter was written--July 6th, he was still unconscious. Both Mr. and Mrs. York are former Rossville citizens. | 10971 |  | Obituary- York, Henry Died, Sunday, February 16, 1902, at El Paso, Texas, Henry T. York, after a lingering illness. He was born September 8th, 1877, at Rossville, Kansas, where he has continuously resided with his parents until last fall when he was removed to Texas in the hope that a change of climate would prove beneficial to his failing health. He gradually grew weaker, however, until Sunday morning, February 16th, when the relatives in this city were summoned by that saddest of messages, “Come, Henry is dying.” Henry was attended throughout his fatal illness by the dearest of earthly friends – mother. His last moments were comforted by a mother’s gentle, soothing, loving ministrations. His brother Charlie and sister Emma, joined the mother in the faraway land and at the mother’s request, Henry was laid to rest in the beautiful El Paso cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn. Henry T. York graduated from the Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan, Kansas, in the Mechanical Engineering course, June 13, 1901. Later, he secured a position in a Manual Training school, at Ackley, Iowa, as assistant principal, where he taught Algebra and Geometry, Physics and Manual Training. His upright life and noble character won the love and respect of his pupils, associates and all with whom he came in contact. After a few months service in Ackley College he was forced to resign on account of failing health. Great sympathy goes out to the parents, brother and sisters of this gentle, kind and much loved young man, and to the hundreds who were bound to him by the strongest ties of friendship. As for Henry, nothing more need be added. It is well with him. | |

He was born in Oklahoma and served as veterans service office in the Sonora, Calif., office from 1945 until moving to the Modesto area in 1950. He served as DMV in surrounding communities as well. He was a veteran of the Navy in World War II. He suffered a stroke of paralysis about 3 years ago and had been confined to his home since. Funeral services were held today at the Christian church conducted by Rev. G. G. Horne, the pastor. Burial was in Rossville cemetery. Mr. Young was a native of Walchville, Montgomery Co., Illinois, where he was born Jan. 27, 1857. On the date of his death he was 72 years and 23 days old. He was married to Martha J. Kerr at New Douglas, Illinois, Feb. 14, 1878 and in the fall of the same year came to Kansas locating at Rossville. Mr. Young at one time owned land southwest of town and also an 80 acre farm east of town, the house formerly standing a short distance south of the city cemetery. The family left the place in 1892 and moved into town and had resided here since. Mr. Young had been a member of Hesperian Lodge since 1886. At various times he had served as marshal of Rossville. Beside his widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rosa Bixby and Mrs. Bertha James, both of this community; a brother, Elmer Young, of Topeka; eleven grand children and two great grandchildren. Alvin was a plumber and had worked for the Topeka State Hospital. He also was a farmer and had driven a truck for several years for Kincaid Trucking. Alvin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Newbury and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Flint Hills Tractor Club. Alvin was preceded in death by a granddaughter, April Comes; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Zeller; a son-in-law, Kirby Allen; his siblings, Sister Maxine Zeller, OSB, Florian Zeller, Verena Seberg, Mildred Dagenhardt, Thelma Caponergo, Louise DeDonder and Mercedes Sayler. | 10990 |  | Obituary- Zeller, Margaret Margaret Rose Zeller Paxico- Margaret Rose Zeller, 95, passed away peacefully, Sunday, January 24, 2021, surrounded by her family at her son Mike's home in Paxico. She was born January 4, 1926, at Paxico, to John L. and Adelaide Flach Hesse. Margaret grew up in the Paxico community and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School and graduated from Paxico High School in 1943. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Newbury, and the altar society at the church. She also was a member of the Paxico Senior Center. Margaret was employed by Dr. Eugene and Patricia McKenzie as a dental assistant, devoted friend and housekeeper for over 30 years. She served her church in many capacities. Margaret was an avid gardener, quilter and she enjoyed traveling whenever possible. Margaret loved her family deeply and was always interested in their activities. Margaret R. Hesse and Alvin R. Zeller were united in marriage at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newbury on May 21, 1945. They were married 72 years before his death on September 23, 2017. Margaret was also preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, April Comes; a son-in-law, Kirby Allen; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Zeller; and sisters, Loubelle Heiman and Henrietta Aubert. Survivors include her children, Jackie (Roger) McCormick, St. George, Janie (Ken) Schnitker, Salina, Kenneth (Wendy) Zeller, Paxico, Sylvia Nott, Paxico, Liz (John) Beard, Minneola, Patricia (Ken) Maginley, Wamego, Mike (Lori) Zeller, Paxico, Paul (Suzy) Zeller, Assaria, Ann (Jerry) Robertson, Olathe and Rob (Tiffany) Zeller, Boynton Beach, FL; sisters, Leola Kolde, her twin sister, Martha DeWilde, Carolyn Wurtz & a brother, John Hesse; 30 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren with one on the way and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be private at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newbury. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. He was married to Nora Marie Beck April 27, 1932, in Clay Center. She survives. Freda was born to Fred and June Burton McCollough at Topeka on November 8, 1947. She grew up in the Rossville community, graduated from Rossville High School in 1965, and attended Clark’s School of Business in Topeka. In her younger years, she worked for Victory Life Insurance Co. She and her husband Tony owned and operated Mr. Z’s restaurant in St. Marys. Fred was an avid KU and Kansas City Royals fan. She loved her family, and you could find her at any of her children’s or grandchildren’s events. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Freda was preceded in death by her parents and a son Mark. Freda McCollough and Anthony Zemek were united in marriage on January 7, 1967, at St. Marys. Tony survives. Other survivors are her son, Mike Zemek, Topeka; her daughter, Brenda Ginter, St. Marys; two sisters, Judy (Ralph) Lundin and Jane (Bob) Tripp, all of Rossville; six grandchildren, Courtney Beard, Derek Zemek, Sydness Ginter, Britnee, Ashley, and Caylee Zemek; six great-grandchildren. The family received friends on February 11, 2021, at Piper Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Marys at a later date. | 11000 |  | Obituary- Zickefoose, Christina 1 CHRISTINA ANN BAHNER ZICKEFOOSE Christina Ann Bahner Zickefoose, 98, Rossville, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Topeka. She was born Oct. 14, 1913, near Grove in Shawnee County, Kan., the daughter of E. Phillip and Rosa Ann Dvorak Bahner. She attended Stach, a one-room schoolhouse, now part of the Kansas State Historical grounds. She roomed “in town” and graduated in 1931 from Delia High School where she played basketball on the same team with her older sister, Julia. Christina married S.F. Zickefoose, DVM, in 1935 and moved with him to California, Mississippi, Georgia, Onaga, Kan., and returned to Rossville in 1947. She was a member of the Rossville Christian Church, serving as Sunday school superintendent for many years. She was past-worthy matron of Loyal Chapter of the Eastern Star. She served two terms on the Rossville Grade School Board. Christina was employed by the Farm Bureau Insurance Company as a secretary. She pursued a life-long interest in gardening, collecting antiques, and needlework. She loved sports and closely followed KU basketball. Mrs. Zickefoose was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her Children, Sam Zickefoose and his wife Marti of Prairie Village and her daughter, Jane Davis and her husband Allen of Topeka, grandchildren; Steven Davis (Connie) of Wichita; Paul Davis, Kansas City, Kan.; Brian Zickefoose (Brie) Prairie Village; and Anne Zickefoose Hu (Dennis) New York City and six great-grandchildren: Ellie, Nora, Fiona, and James Davis, Jack and Ethan Zickefoose. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at Rossville Christian Church, 411 Spruce, Rossville. Interment was in Rossville Cemetery.
