| 3901 |  | Obituary- Barney, James E. 2 J. Earl Barney, Sr. J. Earl Barney, Sr., 88, Topeka, died Thursday, April 27, 1989, at Rossville Valley Manor. Mr. Barney spent many years in the automobile and real estate businesses in Topeka. He was born April 5, 1901, in the Grove area north of Silver Lake, the son of J. William and Valinda Wyatt Barney. He lived most of his life in Shawnee County. He spent many winters in West Palm Beach, Fla., where he was president of Kansas Society of Palm Beaches. Mr. Barney was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church and was active in the Sunday school at the church. He also was a 50-year member of Herperian Lodge No. Ill, AF&AM, in Rossville. He was married to Irene Franz on August 10, 1921, at Topeka. She died April 3, 1980. Survivors include two sons, Dr. James Earl Barney, Jr., Avon, Conn., and Dr. Duane Barney, Bethesda, Md.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services were at 10 a.m. Mon¬day in Parker-Price Mortuary with the Rev. Larry Keller officiating. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. | 3902 |  | Obituary- Barney, Joseph D. 1 Joseph Dewey Barney SILVER LAKE — Joseph Dewey Barney, 87, Silver Lake, died Thursday, July 24, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Barney owned and operated the Rossville Barber Shop in the 1920s and 1930s. He later farmed and was an electrician for Kansas Power and Light Co. from 1936 to 1946. He was an electrician for the State Hospital from 1954 to 1964. He was a Navy veteran of World War I. He was born Sept. 18, 1898, at Silver Lake, the son of J. William and Vilinda Wyatt Barney. He lived in the Silver Lake and Rossville communities most of his life. Mr. Barney was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist Church, Lake Lodge No. 50, AF&AM, and served on the Silver Lake City Council during the 1970s. He also was a former member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville and served on the Rossville City Council during the 1940s. He married Alice Belle Redmon on Feb. 24, 1925, at Lawrence. She died Nov. 18, 1982. A son, Dale Barney, died in 1969. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Josephine Barney Harkness, Silver Lake; a son, the Rev. Kenneth D. Barney Sr., Springfield, Mo.; a brother, J. Earl Barney, Topeka; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Silver Lake United Methodist Church. Military graveside services will be conducted by Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville Cemetery. | 3904 |  | Obituary- Barney, Joseph W. 1 J.W. BARNEY Joseph William Barney aged 60 years, 8 months and 12 days, passed away Sunday night at the home of his son Joe in Rossville. Mr. Barney had been a resident of Kansas and Shawnee County for almost 68 years, coming to Kansas with his parents when two years of age from his birthplace near Bea¬trice, Nebraska. They settled on a farm about five miles north of Sil¬ver Lake in what is now Grove town¬ship. At the time the family lo¬cated there the only inhabitant were the native Indians. The influx of settlers came about a year or so later. Mr. Barney was united in mar¬riage to Velinda Wyatt, September 27, 1897. To this union two children were born, Joseph Dewey, of Rossville and James Earl of Topeka, j Mr. and Mrs. Barney remained on a farm in this section of the county until just a few years ago when they sold out and removed to Rossville. Since then they had lived at their home on Navarre street. Mr. Barney was an earnest Christian man. In early life he joined the Baptist church in Silver Lake, later transferring his member¬ship to the Methodist church there and later to the Rossville M. E. church. Besides his widow and two sons, other surviving relatives are five grandchildren; three brothers, Frank of Silver Lake, Ed of Gracemont, Okla., Lee of Marysville and two twin sisters Gussie and Gertie. Two other brothers, Clyde and Oliver and one sister, Pearl, pre¬ceded him in death. Funeral services were held Tues¬day afternoon, April 14, at 2:30 o’clock in the Methodist church, con¬ducted by Rev. Wright Horton of Riley, Kansas. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. E. E. Witter, Mrs. Peter Navarre, Mrs. Ruth Hesse, Mrs. Art Wallerstedt with Miss Edith Higginbotham at the piano. The pallbearers were Messrs. David Davis, A. A. Cless, John Shenk John Rouse, Frank Page and Denny Davis. Interment was in Rossville ceme¬tery. Thou art where summer birds from afar, shall cross the sea. | 3905 |  | Obituary- Barney, Vilinda Woman Dies At Age 91 Mrs. Linda Barney, 91, of Rossville died Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Lakeside Rest Home at Silver Lake. She was born Dec. 8, 1875 in Morgan County, Ky., and had lived in the Rossville and Sil¬ver Lake communities 75 years. She was a member of the Meth¬odist Church and Amaryllis Chapter No. 321, Order of East¬ern Star, both of Rossville. Her husband, Will Barney, died in 1936. Survivors include two sons, Joe Barney, Hoyt, and Earl Barney, Topeka; two brothers, J. A. Wyatt, Loma Linda, Calif, and Grover Wyatt, Roseville, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Dean Day, Silver Lake; five grand¬children and eight great-grand¬children. Services were Thursday at the Rossville Methodist Church with burial in Rossville Ceme¬tery. | |

He spent his life in the Centropolis and Overbrook communities. Mr. Barnhart was a member of Washington Creek Church of the Brethren in southwest Douglas County. He was married to Pearl Olive Firestone March 29, 1936, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Melvin K. Barnhart, Grain Valley, Mo., Vern D. Barnhart, Topeka, and Clifford N. Barnhart, Delia; two daughters, Sharon Soutee, Kansas City, Mo., and Maxine Holden, Lake Mills, Wisc.; a sister, Effie Churchbaugh, Lawrence; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Washington Creek Church of the Brethren in south¬west Douglas County. Burial will be in Washington Creek Cemetery. | 3908 |  | Obituary- Barranco, Mary May was born in Birds, Lawrence County, Illinois on October 7, 1854. She met and married James Potts Baird on February 27, 1873. In 1878 they came to Rossville, and were one of the pioneer families of the town. Her obituary states, Mrs. James Baird died at her home in the west part of town Monday evening January 7th at the age of 52 years and 3 months. She had been a sufferer from consumption for more than two years, bearing her affliction to the end with patient Christian fortitude. Her husband, J.P. Baird, passed on to the mysterious realm of the spirit land one year ago July. Mrs. Baird leaves six children, five boys, Luther, Charles, William, John and Martin, and one girl, Mrs. Blanche Davis, all of whom were at the bedside during her last hours. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon in the M.E. Church conducted by the Rev. Webb, and interment took place in the city cemetery. Many friends filled the church to pay last tribute of respect to the dead whom they had known and respected for so many years for Mrs. Baird was a kind considerate neighbor and an exemplary Christian woman. | |

Mr. Barrand was a construction worker and a truck driver before he retired. He was born Dec. 21, 1910, in Whiting, the son of George and Ethel Bryan Barrand. He lived in Eskridge before he moved to Rossville five years ago. Mr. Barrand was a member of North Topeka Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Lierz and Mrs. Linda Sampson, both of Topeka; four sons, Eugene A. Barrand, Gary Barrand and Larry Barrand, all of Topeka, and Jack Barrand, Savannah, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Paralee Norton, Atchison, and Mrs. Louise Gibbs, Topeka; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Berry was born August 16, 1927, the daughter of Dewey and Florence Higgins Countryman. She was a 1945 graduate of Rossville High School. She was a retired proof counselor for Bel Air Studios, Louisville. Betty was a member of the Summitt Heights United Methodist Church. She married Vernon Barrett. They were divorced. A son, Steven Barrett died in 1999. Survivors include two daughters, Jerrie Goodfleisch and Vicki Barrett, both of Louisville, KY; two sisters, Vena Mae Thompson, Delia, and Ruby Davis, Topeka; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her service was at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bosse Funeral Home, Louisville. Burial was in Pennsylvania Run Cemetery, Louisville. Family visitation was Friday at the funeral home. | 3912 |  | Obituary- Barron, A.M. News came to Rossville relatives of the family, Sunday, of the sud¬den death, Saturday, of A. M. Bar¬ron at his home in Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Barron was the husband of the former Ethel Ellis, a sister of Mrs. Lillie Wilt of this city. The Barron family, before their removal to Ari¬zona, lived for 10 or 12 years on a farm northeast of Silver Lake and neighbors and acquaintances will be saddened to know of his passing. Be¬side his widow he is survived by two daughters, both teachers in the Tuc¬son schools. Funeral services and burial were Monday at Tucson. | |

He was born Jan. 27, 1934, at Sturgeon, Mo., the son of Mitchell Alonzo and Mar¬garet Frances Benson Bartee. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business at North East Missouri State University at Kirksville, Mo.. He had lived in Topeka since 1966. Mr. Bartee was a member of Country¬side United Methodist Church. He was married to Nancy Anne Roberts in Dallas in 1960. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Leslie Ritchlin, Aurora, Colo., and Janie Higgins, Topeka; his mother, 'Margaret Bartee, Sturgeon, Mo.; two sisters, Barba¬ra Bartee, Carmichael, Calif., and Jane Holdman, Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandchildren. | 3914 |  | Obituary- Bartlett, Anna ANNA MELISSA BARTLETT Mrs. Anna Melissa Bartlett passed away Saturday evening, January 19, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. M. Hook of Silver Lake. Mrs. Bartlett was widely known in the Rossville community having lived here several years before moving to Silver Lake. She was born in Franklin county, Ohio, March 30, 1849, and on the date of her death was 79 years, 9 months and 19 days old. She was married to Henry Bartlett October 8, 1871. To this union three children were born, Clara, George and Emma. Clara and George died in infancy. They moved to Burdette, Kansas, in 1884, where Mr. Bartlett died two years later. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bartlett removed to Rossville where she resided until 1898, when she went to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. B. M. Hook of Silver Lake. She was a member of the Rossville Methodist church. Beside her daughter, Mrs. Emma Hook, she is survived by eight grandchildren, Mrs. Dewey Wood, of Topeka; Mrs. George Howell, Nina, Norma, Guilford, Benjamin, Maynard and Howard Hook all of the home address. Funeral services were held at the Penwell chapel in Topeka, Monday afternoon, January 21, at 2 o’clock, Rev. J. W. Reed of Leavenworth, conducted the services. Burial was in the Rochester cemetery. | |
| 3915 |  | Obituary- Bartley, Raymond FORMER ROSSVILLE BOY KILLED IN KANSAS CITY Raymond H. Bartley, 43 years old was killed early last night (Tuesday) when the motor car he was driving plunged from the east end of the twenty-third street viaduct and fell sixty feet to the Kansas City Terminal railroad tracks. Bartley, for fourteen years a switchman for the Wabash railroad was killed. He suffered a fractured skull and fractures of both legs.— K. C. Star. Mr. Bartley is the son-in-law of Mrs. Myrtle Koons of this city. He lived in Rossville when a young man on south Navarre street with his par¬ents. | 3916 |  | Obituary- Barton, Clara CLARA HELEN BARTON Mrs. Clara Helen Barton, 91, St. Marys, died Wednesday, January 22, 1986, at St. Marys Manor. Mrs. Barton taught in Texas schools before she was married. She was born October 11, 1894, at Carneiro on the Homischer Farm where the famous “Mushroom Rock’* is located. She was the daughter of John Frank and Josephine Koegler Hornischer. She lived in St. Marys the past six years. She lived in Oklahoma City from 1942 to 1980. Mrs. Barton was a member of the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Altar Society, Legion of Mary and Third Order of St. Francis, all in Oklahoma City. She was married to Harold J. Barton October 6, 1919, at Hilje, Tex. He died August 15, 1968. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Erma Hoffman, Oklahoma City, Mrs. Clara “Tickie” Bawden, St. Marys, Sister Ann Barton, Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Leavenworth, and Mrs. Virginia Gravatt, West Milford, N.J.; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hardey, Los Alamos, N.M., Mrs. Frances Shaw, Mount Pleasant, Tex., and Mrs. Marguerite Schubert, Woodsboro, Tex., 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services were Monday in Resurrection Cemetery Chapel at Oklahoma City. A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys. | |

| 3918 |  | Obituary- Basquin, Virginia Deaths and Funerals MRS. H. P. BASQUIN Virginia Inez Work, second daughter of Joseph and Mary Work, was born in Birmingham, Iowa, Jan. 23, 1887. At the age of seven years she moved with her parents and sis¬ters to Almena, Norton County, Kansas. .She received her early ed¬ucation there and taught three years in the public schools in that com¬munity. Later she took special work in the Garrett Biblical Institute, while her husband was finishing his course in the Garrett Seminary. In the year 1909 she was married at Almena, Kansas, to Herbert P. Basquin. She devoted her life to her hus¬band’s work in the ministry serving in every capacity possible, especial¬ly with women and young people, and also in the Sunday School. She was a teacher of the Good Fellow¬ship class in Dunlap charge, at the time of her death. Mrs. Basquin was a lover of music and played the piano a great deal, especially the hymns, for her own enjoyment and also for those about her. The various charges on which she served side by side with her hus¬band, were Montrose, Miltonvale, Keats, Lock St., Chicago, LaCygne, Meriden, Rossville, Admine-Miller, Rantoul, Scranton, Melvern and Dunlap. Being childless, Mrs. Basquin was very devoted to her nieces and ne¬phews and always had their wel-fare at heart. She leaves to mourn but not with¬out hope, her husband and three sis¬ters, Mrs. Jennie Neece, Holton; Mrs. Mamie Pierce, Topeka; and Mrs. Ethel Boyd, Topeka. Lillian Work, an older sister, her parents and an infant brother preceded her in death: six nephews, four nieces, a number of other relatives and a host of friends are sad at her passing.. She passed away at her home in Dunlap, Kansas, at 1:30 a. m. Fri¬day, Aug. 14, 1936, aged 49 years, 6, months and 21 days. She was converted at the early age of seven years and became a j member of the M. E. church, ever living strong in the faith. Funeral services were held at the home at 11 a. m. Sunday and at Scranton M. E. church at 2:30 p. m. and were in charge of L. F. Waring, district superintendent. Interment was in the family lot in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Topeka. | |

He was born June 5, 1898, near Havensville, and moved from Havensville to Topeka about five years ago. Mr. Bateman farmed in the Cairo [sic Kiro] area before retiring about 15 years ago. He was a member of Havensville United Methodist Church. He was married to Alta Robinson in September 1918. She died in 1970. He was married to Mrs. Ora Bixby Aug. 12, 1971, at Lyndon. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Vincent Bateman, at home; a stepson, Charles Bixby, Chehalis, Wash.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Naomi Moritz, Silver Lake; a sister, Mrs. Marion Brown, Santa Cruz, Calif., and two grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery, Topeka. She spent most of her life in the Delia community in Jackson County. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church at Houston, Tex., and was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Delia. Her husband, Jacob Bauer, died Nov. 6, 1951. Herschel was born Sept. 22, 1923 in Delia KS, the son of Oliver and Alice Vaughn Bauer. He served our country in the US Army during WWII. On July 24, 1945, Herschel and Anna Gudenkauf were united in marriage at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca KS. They enjoyed 66 years together. He was a long-time member of Assumption Church (Mater Dei Parish) and the American Legion, Post 225. Herschel worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 39 years, retiring in 1978. Survivors include his wife, Annie Bauer; brother, Eugene Bauer, Topeka; sister, Regina Shook, Columbia SC; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters. Mr. Bauer was 42 years old. His wife, Mrs. Clara P. Bauer, was 37 years old. Mrs. Eleanor Wood, a friend, who was left in charge of the flower shop in their absence, said the couple had left early on a business trip to St. Louis, Chicago and Milwaukee. They had planned to return here Wednes¬day she said. Mr. and Mrs. Bauer had operated the florist business about twelve years, with their home at the rear of the shop. They also owned a farm near Stillwell, Kans., Mrs. Wood said. State patrolmen found both Stillwell and Kansas City addresses in the car. "Dan" Baumchen St. Marys - Daniel Peter Baumchen was born Dec. 27, 1926, the son of William J. and Clara Steinmetz Baumchen, in the Turkey Creek Community in Wabaunsee County, and died January 8, 2020. He graduated from St. Marys High school in 1944 and worked for 42 years for the Union Pacific Railroad as a station agent/telegrapher in Kansas City, Wamego, Clay Center, St. Marys, and Topeka. During his career, he also worked as a mobile agent, serving Union Pacific customers between Topeka and Manhattan. On Aug. 7, 1954, he married Iona Graf at Emmett. They were married 65 years. Public service was an important part of Dan's life. He served on the St. Marys City Commission from 1963-1969, and as mayor in 1964. He spent 16 years on the Kaw Valley USD 321 Board of Education and was on the board when voters approved the construction of new high schools in Rossville and St. Marys on the fourth try at the ballot. He was a longtime scoutmaster for Troop 94 where he mentored 15 Eagle Scouts. Dan was awarded the District Award of Merit and Silver Beaver Award. He also was a member of Troop 1 by completing Wood Badge. He organized many troop canoe trips to the Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. Dan was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He shared his love of the outdoors by teaching hunter education classes in St Marys for several years. He planted a large garden annually and enjoyed growing roses. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and volunteered in many capacities at the church. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Sister Wilma Baumchen, OSB; and a brother, William J. | 3935 |  | Obituary- Baumchen, Iona 1 Iona Baumchen June 28, 1934 — February 4, 2022 Iona Graf Baumchen, 87, was born June 28, 1934, in Wheaton, Kansas, the daughter of Jake and Hallie Simon Graf, and died Feb. 4, 2022, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor where she had lived for 26 months. She graduated from Wamego High School in 1951. Iona attended Emporia State University for two years and received a teaching certificate. She taught in grade schools in Ellsworth and Belvue. She returned to college in the middle 1970s and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Washburn University in 1979. She taught in Maple Hill for three years before moving to St. Marys Grade School where she taught until she retired. She loved to teach reading and language and enjoyed developing many hands-on projects for her classroom. Her philosophy was to evaluate her teaching strategies about once a week to meet the needs of her students. She married Daniel Peter Baumchen on Aug. 7, 1954, at Emmett. They lived in Clay Center before moving to St. Marys in 1957. The Baumchens were married 65 years. As a mother of seven children, her life was filled with activities and adventures. She was a longtime Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother. She worked as the recreation director for the City of St Marys and was responsible for everything from scheduling umpires to booking bands for dances. Iona managed the St Marys Swimming Pool for seven years and directed a comprehensive American Red Cross swimming program for hundreds of children in St. Marys and surrounding communities. She served Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in a variety of ways, including being a lector and teaching CCD classes. Iona worked many years at the St. Marys Community Food Pantry, faithfully serving people weekly. A special job was preparing holiday food baskets. She began to quilt after she retired from teaching and made quilts for each of her children, 13 grandchildren and most of her great-grandchildren. She had a keen interest in design and color. | |

| 3937 |  | Obituary- Bawden, Kennett Kennett David Bawden DELIA — Kennett David Bawden, 68, rural Delia, died Thursday, March 2, 1995, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Bawden was a test room techni¬cian for AT&T for more than 26 years. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was born June 5, 1926, in Enid, Okla., the son of George Allen Sr. and Flossie Marian Kennett Bawden. He was graduated from Classes High School in Oklahoma City and attended Oklahoma City University. He had lived in St. Marys from 1980 to 1993 before he moved to Delia. Mr. Bawden was a member of One Holy Roman Catholic Church and the Phi Chi Fraternity. He was a life mem¬ber of the John Birch Society. He was married to Clara Barton on Jan. 16, 1948, in Oklahoma City. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Pope Michael "David" Bawden, Delia, and Brian Bawden, Emmett; a sister, Virginia Force, Jackson, Miss.; and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Della Cemetery. Mr. Bawden will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at the Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today. He was born December 11, 2000 at Onaga, the son of Brian K. and Diane VandeVelde Bawden. Nick lived in the Emmett community all of his life. He had worked at St. Marys Lumber. Nick was preceded in death by his father. | 3940 |  | Obituary- Baylis, William Wm. Baylis Died Sunday Wm. Baylis died last Sunday, April 14, at the National Military Home, Leavenworth, after an illness of fourteen days with pneumonia and heart trouble. Mrs. Baylis and daughter, Mrs. Pauline Rezac were with him before the end came but had returned home just before his death. They returned Monday to attend the funeral which was given with all military honors. Interment was made in the beautiful National Cemetery in accordance with the wishes of Mr. Baylis. Mr. Baylis was one of the earliest settlers of Rossville township. He also spent several years in Oklahoma, where he was admitted to the bar in 1896 to practice law. He returned to Rossville in 1898, which has been his home since that time. He was born December 12, 1843 at Philadelphia, Pa., and was 77 years, 4 months and 12 days old at the time of his death. He served as a volunteer U.S. Marine in the civil war from 1861 to the close of the war. He had been a member of the Masonic lodge since 1866 and was a past master of Hesperian Lodge, Rossville. | |
| 3941 |  | Obituary- Beal, Elizabeth Grandma Beals Dead Mrs. Elizabeth Beals aged 77 years, and one among the earliest settlers of Rossville, died at the family home in the west past of town last Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock after a week’s illness. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in the Christian Church. The sermon was delivered by the Rev. Hawkins of Topeka, a large concourse of neighbors and friends being present. The interment took place in the city cemetery. Elizabeth Hannah Swearingen was born in Virginia Aug. 8th, 1831 and later moved with her parents to Illinois where in 1855 she was united in marriage to Mr. Beals. To this union 7 children were born 5 of whom are living—Frank, George, John, Mrs. Jennie Zickefoose all of this place, and Mrs. Anna Cox of Reding, Kans. She was the sister of Mrs. Wm. Rankin, Geo. Swearingen of Killduff, Iowa, who is here on a visit, and Bennett Swearingen of Cook Florida. Mrs. Beals came to Rossville with her husband in the year 1867 and has been a resident of the town ever since. The husband died 1887. For the past five years she had been an invalid from the effects of a paraletic stroke. Her last illness was due to heart trouble and the infirmities of old age. She was a member of the Christian Church, lived a devout Christian life and has entered into the blessings and joy that await the kind, faithful, loving old mothers. | 3942 |  | Obituary- Beal, Frank FRANK BEAL Frank Beal was found dead in bed at his little home west of the creek last Thursday night about 9 o’clock having been missed by his friends, when he failed to make his daily visit to the business section. Sherman James and Grover Kesler found him in his bed after gaining entrance, to the house. The coroner was notified and after examination decided Mr. Beal had died sometime Wednesday night. Mr. Beal had been bothered with a bad heart, it was learned, following is death, and had been given medi¬cine by his physician for this ailment Franklin Butler Beal, was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Beal. He was born near Bushnell, Illinois, Dec. 26, 1862. At the date of his death Dec. 7, he had reached the age of nearly 70 years. At the age of 4 years he came to Rossville, with his parents and grew to manhood in this vicinity. The Beal family was one of the pioneer families of Rossville; at the time they came, only two other families lived here. Rossville was then called Cross Creek station. For 65 years he has lived here a very modest, quiet life. His acquaintances became his friends. He leaves to mourn his departure, one sister, Mrs. Anna Cox of Read¬ing, Kan.; one brother, John of Weiser, Idaho; two nephews Henry Zickefoose of Stapleton, Nebraska, and Frank Zickefoose of this com¬munity as well as many other nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held Sun¬day afternoon at the Christian church conducted by the Pastor, C K. Thomas. Music was furnished by Mrs. Ruth Hesse, Mrs. Mildred Berry Mrs. Peter Navarre, Miss Grace Sanders with Miss Kathleen Pelfrey piano accompanist. The pallbearers were C. E. Cless, G. Griswold, Londa Cottle, John Kesler, Sherman James and Peter Navarre. Burial was in Rossville cemetery. Frederic Zickefoose was home from K. S. C. over the week-end vis¬iting his parents. | 3943 |  | Obituary- Beal, George George David Beal was born in Rossville, Sept , 20, 1869 and died at his home near Stapleton, Nebraska Nov. 29, 1918 at the age of 49 years, 2 months and 9 days. His boyhood days were spent on home farm near Rossville. About eight years ago he purchas¬ed a farm in Nebraska and was living there when death claimed him. He was kind hearted and generous to all and made friends readily. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Anna S. Cox, Reading, Kan¬sas, two brothers, John of Weiser Idaho, and Frank of Solomon, Kansas and other relatives be¬sides a host of friends to mourn his loss. | 3944 |  | Obituary- Beal, John JOHN BEAL John Bennett Beal, an old-time resident of the Weiser district, died suddenly at Boise last Saturday, (August 24). He had undergone a surgical operation in a capital city hospital and was discharged and had started for his home when he sudden¬ly collapsed and passed away before help could be summoned. Mr. Beal was born at Rossville, Kansas, December 4, 1871. He was united in marriage to Effie M. Bet¬zer, February 29, 1896. With his family he came to the Weiser dis¬trict in 1911, settling first on the Flat, but later going to the Sunnyside district, where the family home has been maintained, with the exception of one year in California, for the last 21 years. He had always followed farming. He was known as a loving husband and father and a good neighbor. He was not a mem¬ber of any church or lodge, but his friends say he was a believer in Christ and tried to live a good life. He is survived by his widow of Weiser, one son, Lyle, of Portland, and two daughters, Mrs. Lana Ra¬ney of Parna, and Mrs. Gladys Gay of Bandon, Ore. There are two grandsons and two granddaughters. There is also one sister, Anna Cox, living at Reading, Kansas. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Northam chapel by Dr. Herbert F. Jones of the Christian Church, assisted by Francis Jackson and Lorys Peery. Interment was in Hillcrest cemetery. | |

| 3947 |  | Obituary- Beaubien, Elmyra FORMER SHAWNEE COUNTY WOMAN DIED IN OKLAHOMA (Wanette item in Shawnee, Okla. Morning News) Mrs. Elmyra Beaubien, pioneer woman of the Wanette district who passed away recently (March 11) was born in Logansport, Indiana, December 19, 1855, and died at the age of 74 years on her 54th wedding anniversary to Charlie H. Beaubien, her husband, who is yet living. Mrs. Beaubien, who before her marriage was Elmyra Murphy became the wife of Charlie Beaubien on March 11, 1875, at Silver Lake, Kan., where they made their home for several years prior to coming to Oklahoma in 1896 and settling on a farm near Wanette, where they have lived ever since and have been numbered among the pioneers of the county. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Beaubien, Nellie, Walter and Clara, the latter however, died in infancy and three grandchildren of later years, one of whom died in 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Beaubien were lovingly called “Uncle Charlie” and “Aunt Mide” among their relatives and friends and the latter’s death calls to mind the fact that one by one the pioneers of Pottawatomie county are rapidly slipping away. At her bedside during her last illness were the members of Mrs. Beaubien’s immediate family and a host of relatives and friends. She is survived by her husband, Charlie Beaubien, a son, Walter, of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Neiswender of Los Angeles, Calif.: two brothers, Geo. Murphy of Buffalo. N. Y. and Wm. Murphy of Topeka, Kan; three sisters, Mrs. R. C. Wilson of Childwoll, N. Y.; Mrs. Ross Swain, of Rosedale, Ohio and Miss Margaret Murphy of Topeka, Kan. Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Ogee, Mr. and Mrs. K. Ogee and Mrs. May Holt all of Maud; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wickens and daughter of Oklahoma City; F. Crabb, 1344 Fillmore, St., To¬peka, Tuesday morning. Mrs. Beau¬bien was born in Aristook county, Maine, and moved to Maple Hill from Kankakee, Ill., in 1872. She made her home in what was known as the halfway house between Alma and To¬peka. She had been at the home of her granddaughter since Christmas. She is survived by a son, H. E. Beaubien, Lamar, Colo.; five grand¬daughters, Mrs. Floyd Nichols and Mrs. Crabb, Topeka; Mrs. Elmer Rhodes, Chicago; Mrs. Anna Chap¬man Bliss, Chillicothe, Mo., and Mrs. Robert Louden, San Diego, Calif.; and five grandsons, Sherman T. Bourrasa and E. B. Chapman, Topeka; Paul L., H. C., and G. E. Beaubien, Lamar, Colo. Funeral services are being held at the Maple Hill Congregational church this (Thursday) afternoon at 3 o’clock. | 3949 |  | Obituary- Beck, Myron Myron N. Beck ROSSVILLE — Myron N. Beck, 76, Rossville, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at a Rossville nursing home. Mr. Beck was a stone mason and a cook. He was born May 9 ,1921, in Jamesville, Wis., the son of Abslan and Mattie G. Luckey Beck: He was reared in Kentucky and had lived in Dallas and Louisville, Ky., before he moved to Rossville. He was married to Mary A. Allen in De¬cember 1954. She survives in Yucca Val¬ley, Calif. Other survivors include a daughter, Myra Beck, Baltimore; a son, John Stephen Beck, Southern Palms, Calif.; two sisters. Blanche E. Woulfe, Silver Lake, and Alma Vermillion, Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Mar¬vin Loucas, in Ohio; and six grandchildren. Mr. Beck was cremated. Memorial ser¬vices will be at 2 p.m. today at the Ross¬ville Valley Manor in Rossville. Burial of cremains will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Myron N.
