Mr. Whearty was a retired planner for Beech Aircraft. He was a veteran of World War II. He was born March 15, 1919, at Rossville, the son of Martin L. and Ella Johnson Whearty. Mr. Whearty was a member of Bestor G. Brown Lodge No. 433, AF&AM, Wichita Consistory of Scottish Rite and Midian Shrine. His wife, Helen P. LaFlumboise Whearty, survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Marsha Bustin, Encino, Calif.; two sons, Marty Whearty, Lindsborg, and Jeff Whearty, Wichita; two step-daughters, Carolyn Bandy, Big Springs, Texas, and Janie McEwen, Wichita; a stepson, David Young, Arlington, Texas; a sister, Ruth McGlothlin, Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Galen Whearty, Wichita, and Lester Whearty, Sun City West, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and nine stepgrandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Hillside Funeral Home Chapel in Wichita. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery at Wichita. | |

| 10704 |  | Obituary- Whearty, Martin Martin L. Whearty Martin Leroy Whearty, 80, retired farmer of Rossville, died Tuesday at Wichita. He was born Feb. 29, 1884, at Westmoreland and lived in the Rossville community most of his life. He was a member of the Christian Church and Hesperian Lodge No. Ill, AF&AM, both at Rossville. A daughter, Betty Ann Whearty, died Oct. 11, 1921. Mr. Whearty is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ella Alberta Whearty of the home; five sons, Galen L. and Everett J., both of Wichita, Calvin W., 1026 E. 30th, Riley R. of Fairborn, O., and Lester M. of White Plains, N. Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Maxine Wanick of Wichita; 12 grandchildren; and three half-brothers, James Nason, 1038 Chester, Leland Nason, 138 California, and William Nason, 132 California. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Rossville Methodist Church with burial in Rossville Cemetery. The Parker Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. | |
| 10705 |  | Obituary- Whearty, Riley Riley Russell Whearty Riley Russell Whearty, 77, Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Silver Lake, died Thursday, June 25, 1992, at a Columbus care center. He also had lived in Fort Myers, Fla. Mr. Whearty formerly was director of development at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. He was an Army veteran of World War II, then was recalled for the Korean War and served in the Air Force until he retired in 196G at the rank of colonel. He was born Aug. 7, 1914, at Silver Lake, the son of Martin L. and Ella Johnson Whearty. He was graduated from Kansas State College of Agriculture in Manhattan. His wife, Mrs. Margaret Whearty, preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Jane McMeekin, Westerville, Ohio; a son, Riley Whearty, Kalamazoo, Mich.; a sister, Ruth McGlothlin, Mesa, Ariz.; and three brothers, Galen Whearty and Everett Whearty, both of Wichita, and Lester Whearty, Sun City, Ariz. Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Moreland Funeral Home in Westerville, Ohio. Inurnment is pending. | 10706 |  | Obituary- Wheeler, O. Dean O. Dean Wheeler O. Dean Wheeler, 81 of Soldier, died Sunday, Aug. 12,2012, at Community Hospital in Onaga. He was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Galatia, the son of Orville Thomas and Augusta Carolina Hester Wheeler. Dean attended schools in Hoisington. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Dean had a dairy farm in Soldier for many years. Dean enjoyed fishing, hunting, calling in coyotes and attending grandkids’ sporting events. He was an avid K-State fan. Dean married Lois A. Rieschick on June 14, 1953, in Soldier. She preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 1996. Dean married Ramona Pelton on Aug. 16, 1996, in Oklahoma City, Okla. She survives. He is survived by a son, Jerry Wheeler and wife Annette of Soldier; daughters, Connie Arney and husband Stan of Wichita, Dora Gakle and fiance Noel Clark of Claremore, Okla., Kelly Browning and husband Steve of Havensville, Tawni Myers and husband Randy “Buck” of Havensville, and Brandi Bergstresser and husband Brandon of Rossville; grandsons, Benjamen Wheeler of Manhattan and Bryson Wheeler of Holton; 21 stepgrandchildren; and 18 stepgreat grandchildren. Dean was preceded in death by grandson Nathan Wheeler in 1980, a sister, Opal Dumler, and brothers, Lester and Jack Wheeler. Funeral services were Aug. 16 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. | 10707 |  | Obituary- Wheeler, Shirley Shirley Jean Wheeler August 15, 1932 - July 30, 2016 Shirley Jean Wheeler had the most beautiful smile and greatest sense of humor. She had a huge love for her family, friends and church. Shirley faced many health problems over the years, but we felt she was indestructible and full of good will. Her heart finally gave out Saturday, July 30, 2016. While a patient at Warm Springs Hospital in New Braunfels, TX, she passed away peacefully with her husband David holding her hand. Shirley was born August 15, 1932 in Salina, Kansas, where she was raised by her mother Gertrude Turner and grandmother until her mother married Ed Lambert, who owned a trucking company and a farm in Rossville, KS. She grew up on the farm with two step-brothers, Vance and Elmer, step-sister, Rosemary and half-brother, Robert. Shirley graduated Valedictorian at Rossville High in 1950. She attended Washburn University 1950-51 and later Weatherford University 1971-1973, studying financial administration. She gave birth to her son Greg Marchbanks in 1952 and her daughter Shari Marchbanks in 1954. As a military wife she lived in Hawaii, California, Alabama, Germany, Texas, and Iran making friends all over the world. Her life of work included accountant, payroll, and financial management, receiving many awards. While living in Mineral Wells, Texas in the 70's, she won several awards in the finance department at Fort Wolters. Both Greg and Shari graduated from Mineral Wells High in 1970 and 1972. She married David Wheeler in Boise, Idaho June 10, 1984. She then retired as the finance officer of in 1997 when she and her retired husband decided to move to Texas in 1998. Shirley was preceded in death by her mother, Gertrude Turner Lambert; half-brother, Robert Lambert; step-brothers, Vance and Elmer Lambert; and step-sister, Rosemary Dancer, as well as her ex-husbands, Ray Chapman and Donald Bryant. She is survived by her husband, David Wheeler; her son, Greg Marchbanks; her daughter, Shari Welch; her step-son, Eric Wheeler; her step¬daughter, Arlene Thein; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Shirley Jean Wheeler's memorial service will be at North Shore United Methodist Church in Canyon Lake, Texas at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2016. Mrs. White worked for the Marin County, Calif., Independent Journal for 26 years, most recently in the credit department. She earlier had worked in Kansas as a bookkeeper and for the Pomeroy-Gerwick Construction Co. in San Francisco. She was born May 3,1930, at Rossville, Kan., the daughter of Henry and Regina Ryan Martinek. She was graduated from Rossville High School in 1948. Mrs. White was a member of St. Isabella’s Catholic Church in Terra Linda. Survivors include a daughter, Sheree Althausen, Milpitas, Calif.; her father, Henry Martinek, Rossville; a brother, Vince Martinek, Rossville; two sisters, Jo Copeland, Rossville, and Mary Schumaker, St. Mary's, Kan.; and seven grandchildren. She died Wednesday at a Burlingame, Calif., hospital. She was born Nov. 7, 1921, at Topeka, the daughter of John Henry and Augusta Theresa Rahberg Brubaker. She lived in California since 1946. Mrs. White was a school secretary before she retired 12 years ago. She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Ruth Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and Cancer Association, all at South San Francisco. She married Clayton E. White Sept. 8, 1944, at Norfolk, Va. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Clayton E. White Jr., South San Francisco, Calif., and John Arthur White, of the home; two sisters, Mabel Brubaker, Topeka, and Mrs. Mary Stevens, Long Beach, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Earlier services will be at 10 a.m. today at Nauman-Lincoln Funeral Home, South San Francisco, Calif. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. He was born in Jackson county, Kansas, January 24, 1884, and had lived in Rossville and vicinity most of his life. Mr. White was a charter member of the Delia Masonic Lodge and was a past master. He served with the Marine Corps during World War I, and had been a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America at Topeka. Survivors include a daughter, Doris Townsend of South San Francisco, California; a son, Bill and a granddaughter, Sheree Jo White of San Rafael, California; two sisters, Grace White of Rossville, and Mrs. Daisy Rice of Casitos Springs, California; and three brothers, Arthur of South San Francisco, California, James of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Norman of Rossville. Services were held at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, May 9, at the Rossville Methodist Church, Rev. Don Jones officiating. Mrs. H. D. Richardson and Mrs. Don Jones accompanied by Mrs. Joe Campbell sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden." The Rossville Masonic Lodge and the American Legion conducted graveside services. Pallbearers were Earl Mitchell of Delia, and Gerald Larson, Howard French, Jimmie Davis, Leroy Parr and Pete Kovar of Rossville. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements. On May 3,1948, Dorothy was born to Melvin and Mary Ann (Bradley) Holford in Alma, Kansas. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1966 and attended Washburn University. Dorothy worked for Blue Cross & Blue Shield for many years. She loved spending her spare time listening to music and fishing with family and friends. Dorothy is survived by five daughters: Kimberly Ann Holford-Bailey, Topeka, KS, Dianna Harris, Radcliff, TX, Shianne Anderson-Monteiro (Warren Brown), Elizabethtown, KY, Lesa Anderson, Roosevelt, NY, and Bessie Hawkins, Topeka, KS; and three siblings: Melva McKinley, Alma Augustus, and James Holford, all of Topeka, KS. She formerly was a member of the United Methodist Church at Rossville and was a member of Royal Neighbors of America. She also was a member of Amaryllis Chapter No. 321, Order of Eastern Star, at Rossville. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Preston White, and by a son Gerald White. | 10720 |  | Obituary- White, Faye 1 Faye E. White Miss Faye E. "Whitey" White, 73, South San Francisco, Calif., died Monday, February 27, 1984, in a South San Francisco hospital. She was born January 19, 1911, at Rossville, the oldest daughter of the ten children of Arthur E. and Grace Evelyn Myers White. Miss White graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1931. She worked several years in Kansas before moving to California in the 1930s. During World War II she and several family members worked in a South San Francisco shipyard. Later she completed cosmetology course and following that she became an LVN for the Kaiser Foundation. In 1946, she joined Ruth Chapter No. 305, O.E.S., in South San Francisco. Ruth Chapter put on the work on Tuesday evening in California. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and a brother. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Peggy McAdon, Newberry Park, Calif.; six brothers, Zim White of the home; Donald White, Campbell, Calif., Clayton White, South San Francisco, Calif., Ritchie White, Riverside, Calif., Bob Pitney White, Jacksonville, Calif., Bill P. White, Carrollton, Tex.; and an uncle, Clark Myers, Atlanta, Ga.; three aunts, Mrs. Gwen McAfee, Alabama, Mrs. Mildred Fisher, Topeka, and Miss Grace White, Rossville; nephews, nieces and many cousins. White, 73, of South San Francisco, California, passed away Monday, February 27, in South San Francisco. She was born January 19, 1911, at Rossville, the daughter of Arthur E. and Grace Evelyn Myers White. She had lived in South San Francisco for the past 40 years. She was a vocational nurse at Kaiser Hospital for 25 years. Miss White was a member of Ruth Chapter No. 305, OES, at South San Francisco. She is survived by one sister and six brothers. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Rossville Cemetery with Rev. D. Gene Damewood of the Rossville United Methodist Church officiating. White 58, who passed away Saturday, in a San Francisco hospital, arrived in Topeka, Wednesday evening, and was brought to Rossville today for funeral and burial services. Mrs. White was born at St. Clere and was the daughter of the late Thad Myers and Mrs. Rose Myers. She grew to womanhood in this community, where she lived most of her life. She taught in the rural schools near Rossville. She was married to A. E. White, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James White and to this union was born nine children. One son, James preceded her in death. Mrs. White was a devoted wife and mother and was loved and highly respected by all her friends. In 1941 the family left Rossville and moved to South San Francisco, where they have acquired a nice home. She was a member and Past Matron of Amaryllis chapter O. E. S. at Rossville and attended the Presbyterian church here. Surviving are her husband, Arthur E. White; two daughters, Faye Evelyn of the home and Mrs. Peggy McAdon of Daly City, Calif.; six sons, Don, Zim Ritchie, Bob, Clayton, and Bill Paulen her mother, Mrs. Rose Myers of Rossville; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred French and Mrs. Olive Cochran, Topeka; Mrs. Gwen McAfee, Leona, Tenn.; and Mrs. Edna M. White, South San Francisco, Calif.; four brothers, Clark E. Myers, Austin, Texas; Vernon, Rossville and Ross and Louis of Topeka. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon from the Methodist church, with the pastor, Rev. E. O. Harbour officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Marlin Harth and Mrs. O. S. | 10727 |  | Obituary- White, Grace M. 2 Blaze in Rossville injures woman, 93 By TIM HRENCHIR Capital-Journal law enforcement writer ROSSVILLE — A fire caused by careless smoking critically injured a 93-year-old woman in her downtown Rossville apartment Thursday afternoon. Grace White of 434 1/2 Main in Rossville was rescued from the burning apartment by Rossville Fire Chief Bob Sieh, who entered the smoke-filled building and carried her out, officials said. White was listed in critical condition late Thursday in the bum unit at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. The hospital would not say what White’s injuries were. Sieh said she had burns and smoke inhalation. White had been alone in her apartment when the fire began in a stuffed rocking chair, Sieh said. He said it was caused by careless smoking by White. The fire caused an estimated $10,000 damage, burning the chair, carpeting, Venetian blinds and a lamp shade, Sieh said. Smoke also damaged the rear half of the apartment and might have damaged an adjoining business building. The fire was first detected by Rossville Police Chief Herb Bishop, Sieh said. Bishop radioed the fire chief just before 3 p.m. and said he saw smoke and smelled what appeared to be wood burning in downtown Rossville. Soon afterward, Bishop told Sieh over the radio that the smoke was coming from White’s ground-floor apartment. Sieh said he drove to the scene and saw Bishop standing in front of the apartment’s open door as smoke billowed out. “He (Bishop) tried to go in and get to her, but the smoke was so thick he couldn’t get in, and he went down to his knees.” Sieh said. “I went past him,” he said. “I could see her sitting there on the couch, and I lifted her off and brought her out.” Bishop then started to fight the blaze with a fire extinguisher, and he and bystanders administered first aid to White. The woman was having trouble breathing when she was brought out of the apartment, Sieh said. ‘‘She really wasn’t conscious to verbal stimuli until we got her out and exposed her to fresh air,” he said. "Her level of consciousness improved as time went along.” Sieh drove to the Shawnee County Fire District No. 3 station at Rossville and came back in an ambulance supplied to the department by the Medevac MidAmerica Ambulance Co., which took White to meet the Life Star air ambulance where it landed near Rossville High School. He passed away July 29, 1935, at his home in Rossville, at the age of 87 years and 16 days. At the age of one year his parents moved with him to Woods county, West Virginia. They came to Jackson, county, Kansas, in 1870. Here he was united in marriage to Catherine Ann Faidley, November 7, 1875. They moved to Shawnee county in 1891, and have resided near Rossville since, until a week before his death, when the family moved to town. He is survived by his widow, four daughters, Grace of the home; Mrs. Ida McAdams, Minco, Okla.; Mrs. Daisy Rice, Kansas city, Kansas; and Mrs. Maude Yoder, Council Grove, Kansas; four sons, A.E. and A.N., both of Rossville; James A., Waukesha, Wisconsin; and C.P. of Delia. One daughter, Stella, passed away in January, 1913. There are twenty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Clara Tustin, Cleveland, Ohio, also survives, as do three brothers, J.E. and M.D. White, Parkersburg, West Virginia, and E.A. White, Pasadena, Calif. Four sisters and three brothers have preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Wednesday, July 31 at 2:30 p.m. in charge of the pastor, Wright M. Horton. Music was furnished by a ladies quartet, Mrs. E.G. Griswold, Mrs. A.G. Wallerstedt, Mrs. C.E. Gresser and Mrs. E.E. Witter, with Miss Edith Higginbotham as accompanist. | 10735 |  | Obituary- White, Nora DEATH TAKES STELLA WHITE Valvalar Heart Disease Was the Cause Passed Away Wednesday Morning Funeral Services Will Be Held Saturday Afternoon if a Sister Arrives in Time The community was shocked Wednesday morning by the news of the death of Miss Stella White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. White. Miss White was in her usual health on Monday, but on Tuesday morning complained of not feeling well. Tuesday afternoon Miss White's condition became worse, and Drs. Miller and Miller were called and gave her treatment. Miss White died the following morning at about 7 o'clock. Miss white was twenty years old. She was born on her father's farm 2 1/2 miles northeast of Rossville and had lived in this community all her life. Last year she attended the high school, but did not return this year. In all her associations with her schoolmate, her neighbors and friends, Miss White was congenial, sincere and lovable. Her vivacious and keen intellect made her a much-desired friend by everyone who had occasion to meet her, and she had a faculty of retaining friendships when once made. Late Thursday afternoon definite arrangements had not been made for the funeral service owing to the fact that Miss White's sister Maude, who is a nurse in a Philadelphia hospital, has not arrived and the exact time she will be able to reach Rossville was not known. Further details of Miss White's death will be given in next week's issue of The Reporter. Miss White is survived by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. | 10736 |  | Obituary- White, Ritchie Ritchie A. White Ritchie Arthur White, M/Sgt, US Army Air Force, ret, fourth son of ten children of Arthur E. and Grace E. Myers White was born August 19, 1915, at Rossville. He passed away at his home in Riverside, Calif., May 27, 1984. Impressive graveside services were held in Riverside National Cemetery, during which a single plane passed over the gravesite and dipped its wings. Ritchie White attended schools in Louisville, Silver Lake, Delia, and Rossville. During the depression of the thirties, he was in a CCC Camp in Minnesota for several months. In 1940, he joined the Air Force in San Francisco and saw service in Washington State, Alaska, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Rabat, North Africa and California. He retired from the Air Force in 1961 at Riverside where he continued his residence. On October 15, 1941, Ritchie White and Miss Helen Ross were married in Washington and their home was wherever his military service took him. His widow survives him. Other survivors include one sister, Mrs. Peggy McAdon, Newbury Park, Calif.; five brothers, Zim and Clayton White, So. San Francisco, Lt. Cdr. ret. Bob P. Walter White ROSSVILLE - Walter White, 86, Rossville, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at a Rossville nursing home. Mr. White was a Southern Baptist minister from 1940 until he retired in 1975. He had served in the Kansas City area and throughout Missouri. He was born Nov. 24, 1911, at Seneca, the son-of William Joseph White and Hulda Ellen Haxton White. | 10739 |  | Obituary- White, William 2 WILLIAM D. WHITE William Douglas White died early Monday, February 9, 1981, at Stanford, Calif. He had leukemia. Mr. White was born November 18, 1921, near Delia and attended 12 years of school in Delia and Rossville. He was known locally as “Billy.” He was graduated from Rossville High School in 1939, and in September of that year joined the U.S. Navy. During his Navy career, he was stationed at the Great Lakes Training Base, Illinois; San Diego, Seattle, Hawaii, Texas, Florida, and Massachusetts. After Pearl Harbor, Bill saw action from Australia to Korea. He was honorably discharge din December 1945, and returned to California where he spent the rest of his life. He was graduated from San Mateo, Calif., in 1949, and from the Kansas University School of Journalism in 1951. For several years he was a reporter for “The Independent Journal” in San Rafael, Calif. Bill was the older son of the three children of Charles Preston and Edna Marie Myers White. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Gerald Preston, in 1924, his father in 1962, and his mother in 1976. Survivors include his sister, Doris Townsend, South San Francisco, Calif.; three aunts, Grace White, Rossville, Gwen McAfee, Decater, Ala., and Mildred Fisher, Topeka; two uncles, Vernon Myers, Rossville, and Clark Myers, Decater, Ga.; his cherished friend Lois Faucher, San Carlos, Calif.; many cousins and close friends. As a youngster, Bill attended the Delia Presbyterian Church. He had been a member of Palo Alto/Stanford branch of the NAACP for about ten years. Politically he was a Democrat. Inurnment was in California. William D. White SAN CARLOS, Calif. - William Douglas White, 59, San Carlos, died Feb. 9 at a Palo Alto hospital after a Iona illness. He was born Nov. 18, 1921, the son of Charles Preston and Edna Marie White. He attended public schools in the Rossville and Delia, Kan., area, and was graduated from Della High School. He was graduated from the University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism in 1951 and lived in California since 1952. Mr. White was a salesman in California for the past 15 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was married to Agnes Martinek in 1949. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Sheree Jo White, Milpitas, Calif.; and a sister, Mrs. Doris Townsend, San Francisco. Mr. White was cremated. Memorial services were Feb. 12 at White Oaks Chapel, San Carlos Military graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 20 in Rossville Cemetery. | 10740 |  | Obituary- White, Zim ZIM WHITE Zim Edward White, 72, second son of the ten children of Arthur Esmond and Grace Evelyn Myers White, late of South San Francisco, Calif., died Saturday, November 23, 1985, in Chope Community Hospital, San Mateo, Calif. He had been a patient there since November 4. Mr. White was born December 16, 1912, in Rossville, and attended schools in Shawnee, Pottawatomie and Jackson Counties in Kansas. In May of 1941, Mr. White moved with his parents to South San Francisco, where he had made his home. In May 1942, Mr. White was inducted into the U.S. Army in San Francisco and served until his honorable discharge at Camp Beale, Calif. January 7, 1946. He had received a Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and a Combat Medical Badge. He was an ambulance driver during his military service. Mr. White was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, older brother, James T., in 1939, sister Faye and brother Ritchie in 1984. Survivors include four brothers, Don White, Campbell, Calif., Bob Pitney White, Jacksonville, Fla., Clayton E. White, South San Francisco, Calif; and William P. White, Carrollton, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Peggy McAdon, Newbury Park, Calif.; two aunts, Miss Grace White, Rossville, and Mrs. Mildred Fisher, Topeka; an uncle, Clark E. Myers, Decatur, Ga.; six nephews and five nieces; many cousins and friends. | 10749 |  | Obituary- Whitford, Romera 2 Transplant Needed by Romera DeBacker Whitfield [sic] Romera DeBacker Whitford is facing certain death within a year unless she receives a heart and lung transplant. But Mrs. Whitford, 42, Baldwin, is optimistic about the success of such an operation and her family is working hard to help her get the needed surgery. Mrs. Whitford, the granddaughter of the late Jud and Margaret DeBacker, Rossville, is the sister of Randy DeBacker, also of Rossville. In a letter to the “Star,” Cherrie DeBacker, Mrs. Whitford’s sister-in-law, said the family has set up a fund at the Peoples State Bank in Rossville to help pay for the operation. Mrs. Whitford is high on the list for surgery by Dr. Denton Cooley of Houston, who has pioneered in transplant operations. A plane is being kept on “standby” at Baldwin by a friend of Romera’s husband John, to make the four-hour flight to Texas when the Whitfords are notified that a donor has been found. In her letter, Mrs. DeBacker said: “This person is very near and dear to my heart. She has made my life ... a little fuller. “Romera has Eisinminger’s disease — holes in her heart. When she was 12, she heard doctors whisper to her parents that she would die before she was 13. “This congenital and progressive heart disease has . . . gotten steadily worse . . . and now Romera has overstressed blood vessels in her lungs so they cannot draw enough oxygen. It’s like hardening of the arteries in her lungs. “She is going to die unless this new and difficult surgical procedure is done. Dying doesn’t scare her as much as the thought of being bedridden in a few months. “Last October, Romera chose ‘Hector’ as the name for the oxygen tank that is her constant companion. And, about that time she started having to use a wheelchair . . . “With a heart and lung transplant, if it is successful, she can have a useful and healthy life. A combined heart/lung transplant is a very new and still ex-perimental procedure. It is being pioneered by Dr. Cooley in Houston.” Mrs. DeBacker said that while only three of the operations have been performed in Texas, several patients in California have already lived two to three years with the transplants. The financial appeal is for $10,000 to cover initial costs of the $50,000 operation. Although the Whitfords have insurance, it does not cover the initial cost of experimental surgery. | |

She was born April 15,1923, in Admire, to Frank and Zlenna Love Herrick. She grew up in the Admire community and attended school in the Maxson community north of Emporia. Ila was from a family of 10. She had lived in the Rossville community since 1948. She was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church, the auxiliary to Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville and also the Rossville Senior Citizens, where she served on the board of directors. Ila enjoyed gardening, flowers and baking cookies. She most especially enjoyed helping others. She married Robert Whitlock on Sept. 5,1948, at St. Marys. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, three brothers and an infant son, William S. Whitlock, in 1949. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Aschenbrenner, Wakarusa; a son, Bill Whidock, Pleasant Prairie, Wis.; four brothers, Robert, Dale, Harold and Gary Herrick, all of Topeka; and two grand¬daughters, Lisa Lett and Emily Whitlock. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Rossville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. She will lie in state at Piper Funeral Chapel in Rossville from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with family visitation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
