Obituary- Lewis, Stephen 1
A Celebration of Life will be held for Stephen William Lewis on Monday, May 31 at Worden Cornerstone Church, 294 East 900 Road, in rural Douglas County. Friends and neighbors are invited to join his family at 11:00 am for a service of remembrance, comfort, and celebration. Steve was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, co-worker, neighbor, and friend. He died Friday, May 21, 2021 at his home, of cancer. He was 72. He will be sorely missed.

Steve was born on January 20, 1949, in Oak Park, Illinois. He was the second of 10 children born to Robert O’Dell Lewis and Verla Jeanne Schneider Lewis. Steve grew up in Hinsdale, a suburb of Chicago, in a rambling Victorian house full of love, laughter, and lost socks. Steve attended St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School, Hinsdale Township High School, and graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education in 1971. He married his high school sweetheart, Lorel June Rezek, on January 20, 1970, at Danforth Chapel on the KU campus. He called Lorel “the best birthday present I ever got.” She called him her “best friend.” “Their song” in high school was Happy Together. And after 51 years, they still were.

During his 25-year career with the Sheriff’s Office, he served as a Field Training Officer, firearms instructor, training sergeant, transport sergeant, and was a member of the County Jail Transition team, where he wrote job descriptions, policy, and procedures for the new county jail. But Steve’s priority and joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Lorel, and his daughters Molly (Jonathan) Glauner of Lawrence, Kansas, and Elizabeth (John) Rulifson of Shawnee, Kansas. He adored his grandchildren: Emma Rodgers, Lorel Rodgers, Kristina Rasmussen, Jack Rasmussen, Ray Rulifson, and Rose Rulifson. He also lovingly leaves behind his amazing brothers and sisters: Greg Lewis of Lawrence, Kansas; Jim Lewis (Nancy O’Connor) of Lawrence, Kansas; Connie Culbertson (Roy) of Belleville, Illinois; Nancy (Dan) Ward of Weaverville, North Carolina; David (Mona) Lewis of Livingston, Montana; Tim Lewis of Littleton, Colorado; Marsha (Jeff) Sebek of Chicago, Illinois; Andy (Juda) Lewis of Lawrence, Kansas; and Matt (Maggie Carpenter) Lewis of New Paltz, New York, as well as 20 beloved nieces and nephews. Steve loved, guided, and protected us all. As one neighbor wrote of him, “although my guardian angel is no longer with us in the flesh, I know he’ll still be watching over me. However, I will miss his side of the conversation when we talk.” Our sentiments exactly.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Family Promise of Lawrence, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044. Online condolences may be sent at rumsey-yost.com.

We love you, Stephen William Lewis. God be with you ‘til we meet again.

72-year-old Topeka woman dies
when ear, pickup Truck collide

By STEVE FRY
Capital-journal law enforcement writer
A 72-year-old Topeka woman who apparently was driving a few blocks with her husband to their morning coffee club was killed Wednesday when her car and a pickup truck collided at a southeast Topeka intersection. No traffic citations have been issued in the accident.

Topeka police identified the dead woman as Mary C. Lewman, 72, 3033 Colorado. Lewman was dead on arrival at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said. Lewman died as a result of multiple injuries, said Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj, Shawnee County district coroner.

Lewman’s husband, Leroy Lewman, 74, 3033 Colorado, was the only passenger in the Lewman car. Leroy Lewman was treated at St. Francis, then released, a hospital spokesman said. Police said Leroy Lewman suffered a head injury in the mishap.

The driver of the pickup truck, Phillip A. Cheatum, 30, 2010 E. 13th, suffered a minor injury to one leg, police said, but no record of hospital treatment could be found.

Topeka police said no alcohol was involved in the fatality accident on Wednesday. Mary Lewman’s death was the ninth traffic fatality on Topeka streets so far this year. In 1986, there were six traffic fatalities in Topeka.

The accident occurred at 7:23 a.m. at E. 31st and California, a T-intersection where 31st runs westbound from California.

Cheatum was driving a 1968 pickup truck south on California, and
Mary Lewman was driving a 1980 automobile east on 31st Street turning north onto California when the vehicles collided.

According to a witness, the Lewman car was driving slowly through the intersection, said Steve Huddleston, traffic officer. Cheatum saw the Lewman car, applied his brakes and steered to the northbound lane of California to avoid the Lewman’s
"There is no indica-tion of excessive speed."
— Traffic Lt. Ed Klumpp
car. When the Lewman car didn’t stop, Cheatum steered to the right and tried to hit the back of the car, Huddleston said.

The pickup truck struck the car in the driver’s side door. After the impact, “the Lewman car went very slowly backwards down the hill and into the (west) ditch” a short distance south of the intersection, Huddleston said. The Lewman car came to a halt in the west ditch facing northeast.

After impact, the pickup was moving toward a utility pole on the southwest corner of the intersection. Cheatum scooted away from the driver’s seat to avoid being injured on the steering wheel when it struck the utility pole, Huddleston said. The truck came to a halt facing southwest in the west ditch.

Traffic Lt. Ed Klumpp said, “There is no indication of excessive speed (at this time). According to witnesses’ statements, the damage (to the vehicles) and the skid, there was no speed involved.” The pickup and car collided just east of the center line on California at the north end of the intersection.

After a fatality accident, police examine vehicles for mechanical defects as a matter of standard procedure.

Traffic Sgt. Maurice Koch said the Lewman car, a four-door 1980 Buick Century, was destroyed in the accident. The doors on the left side of the car were shoved into the passengers’ compartment to a point even with the middle of the steering wheel.

Police Said it is unknown whether the Lewman car came to a stop before it entered the intersection. Eastbound traffic on 31st faces a stop sign.

Cheatum wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and Mary Lewman was wearing a seat belt. Police said it was unknown whether Leroy Lewman was wearing a seat belt.

When the accident occurred Wednesday, the Lewmans apparently were driving to Harry’s IGA grocery store, 2075 E. 29th, where they often drank coffee with an informal club to start the day.

Jo Stevenson, a member of the coffee club, said Wednesday that Mary Lewman and her husband had been coming to the coffee club that meets in the grocery store’s delicatessen about two years. The arthritis that Mary Lewman had was a factor in her regular attendance at the coffee club.

“She had told us on occasion that the coffee club was a reason to get up in the morning, to get moving. It was a way to forget the hurting for awhile,” Stevenson said.

ACTION
The news that long has been dreaded, came officially Monday of the first loss of a local soldier boy in this war.

Sgt. James J. Lillard, of the Infantry, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Lillard, was the first to go. He was killed in France November 14, according to a wire from the War Department.

Prior to his death he had been wounded August 10, but rejoined his company in October. He was awarded the Purple Heart decoration for gallantry in action at that time, and had sent it home to his parents a few weeks ago.

Jimmie while spending his school days in another community, soon became a popular member of the Rossville young people circles, took an active part in baseball and basketball, being above the average in skill in both sports.

New, words seem banal in trying to express the heartfelt sympathy and sorrow of the people of the community to the bereaved relatives in the loss of an only son and brother. Besides his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. J. M. Lister, Atlanta, Ga.; Mildred Elvin, Topeka and Margie of the home.

He had coached soccer, softball, basketball, baseball, and football for both his daughter and his son and their many teams. He has influenced the athletic ability, but most especially the character building of countless numbers of youth. Parenting and coaching were the highlights of his life and he had a special gift for it that many had a chance to witness and experience. He loved coaching sports and also enjoyed playing and watching them. He was an avid golfer and spent many weekends helping his son, Tagen, learn the love of golf as well. He was also a huge K-State Wildcat fan. He had season football and basketball tickets for several years and loved taking Tagen and Brooke along.
