Robert Eugene “Bob” Marbnek
Robert Eugene “Bob” Martinek, 89, passed away in Las Cruces, NM Friday night July 13, 2018 at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice hav¬ing resided there a short time.

Bob was born August 10,1928 in Delia, KS to Agnes and William Martinek. He grew up with a slightly older brother Bill and younger brother Orville and sister Louise on their family farm. He and Bill were inseparable growing up, so much so that when Bill entered first grade Bob had to go too, thereby being in the same class throughout their school years.

He married Nancy Frey on April 16,1950 in Topeka, KS while both worked for the Santa Fe railroad in Topeka, Bob in the railyard and then the office.

He graduated from Silver Lake High School in Silver Lake, KS in 1945 where he was known for his athletic ability and many pranks pulled with friends. He attended Washburn University in Topeka for 11/2 years on a football scholarship, finishing his education at Kansas University in Lawrence, KS and earning a BSEE with a minor in Math. He enrolled at Kansas University on the Gl bill after enlisting in the Air Force in 1951 and serving for 4 years attached to the Special Weapons Project. His service exposed him to the field of electronics which eventually became his life’s work. After graduating from Kansas University in 1958 he and his young family moved back to Albuquerque, NM, having been stationed there in the service. He first worked for Sandia Corporation remain¬ing there 3 years before joining Neely Enterprises in 1961, which eventually became a sales division of Hewlett Packard. During his tenure with Neely and Hewlett Packard he was named Salesman of the Month in 1965, promoted to Field Engineer in 1968 and moved from Albuquerque to Thousand Oaks, CA in early 1969, operating out of the North Hollywood office, then on to the Las Cruces office as manager in August 1969, retiring in 1986.

He was a big sports fan, especially baseball - he & Nancy honeymooned in Chicago and attended a Cubs game - and enjoyed football and college basketball too. He tried out for a semi-pro baseball team prior to their marriage but the team disbanded due to infighting among the managers, leaving the team members stranded in Oklahoma City left to find their own way home. He and Nancy were avid bowlers for over 50 years. In Las Cruces he bowled in multiple leagues, served as league secretary many years, and bowled with the Chiles de Las Cruces and Las Cruces International Club. He and Nancy enjoyed traveling for bowling tournaments around the country and state, and he qualified for and bowled in many Senior National tournaments in the 75+ age group and the New Mexico Senior Olympics. They made many lifelong, awesome friends through bowling. Bob and Nancy traveled extensively in addition to that for bowling, visiting Spain and Morocco, multiple states, a 5 week self guided tour through 8 countries in Europe in 1984, Germany multiple times, England & Scotland, Sweden, Norway & Denmark, and cruised Alaska, the Caribbean & the Rhine River. They also enjoyed playing the slots at various casinos in New Mexico and Nevada. In earlier years he loved to fish with his brothers when visiting in Kansas and later with good friends from Las Cruces. At home Bob could be found taking meticulous care of their beautiful yard, conquering the daily crossword puzzle, sudoku and cryptoquip, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and avidly reading spy and intrigue novels, favorite authors being Clive Clussler, David Baldacci, Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum.

Bob is survived by his wife of 68 years Nancy of Las Cruces, NM, daughter Mona Martinek of W Lafayette, IN, son Jay Martinek (Verena) of Schwalbach, Germany, grandchildren Sean, Samantha, and Macy Martinek of Schwalbach, Germany and great granddaughter Felicitas Luna also of Germany, brother Orville Martinek (Janet) of Silver Lake, KS, sister Louise Redmon of Silver Lake, KS, sister-in-law Donna Neuner of Topeka, KS, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Vincent Martinek Sr., Dead

Vincent Martinek, Sr., died last Friday morning, Aug. 4, 1916, at St. Francis hospital where he had been taken the Tuesday previous suffering from a relapse of pneumonia. Mr. Martinek had been ill nearly four weeks and at one time was well past the crisis of his malady but later grew worse and at the first favorable moment was rushed to the Topeka hospital, but the change was too late.

Vincent Martinek was born in Silesia, Austria, June 24, 1868. At sixteen years of age he with his parents emigrated to the United States and located at St. Joseph, Mo. He remained there one year, and then came to this community where he has since resided. On September 15, 1890, he was married to Miss Agnes Simecka.

In the death of Mr. Martinek the community has lost a useful and much esteemed citizen. He was progressive and held many responsible positions. By hard work, frugality and business foresight, he has accumulated a goodly share of this worlds goods---but he was always strictly honest. He was generous and helpful to those who were less fortunate than himself, always ready to help those in need. He was a kind husband and indulgent father and a good neighbor. Mr. Martinek leaves to mourn his death, his faithful wife, eight sons and four daughters, one brother and four sisters. His father died at his home in Oklahoma just twelve hours previous to his departure. Mr. Martinek was 48 years 1 month and 11days old at the time of his death in Francis hospital, Topeka

The funeral services were held in the Catholic church at Delia, Monday August 7, Rev. Father Sullivan officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at St. Marys and were followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors.

To the many friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted and sympathize with us in our sorrow and also for the beautiful floral offerings, we wish to extend our sincere thanks.

WM. D. MARTINEK

One year ago, God did what
He thought best. He came
and stood beside you and
whispered, “come and rest.”

You bade no one last farewell,
not even said goodbye;
You were gone before we knew
it, and only God knows why.

May you always walk in sun-
shine and God’s love around
you grow.
for the happiness you gave us,
no one will ever know.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you didn’t go alone,
for part of us went with you,
the day God called you home.

We miss you and love you,
Your wife, Helen, and children

In Memory of
William D. Martinek
"My husband says Bill was the fairest, most pleasant, and most honest dealer he ever did business with," read the handwritten note on a sympathy card sent to Mrs. Bill Martinek and her family. This feeling of trust and admiration was shared by all those who knew him, including his competitors in the farm equipment business.

The mass of beautiful floral tributes, the deluge of sympathy cards and letters, and the outpouring of other expressions of love and concern are all evidence of the respect people had for this hard-working, long-time owner of Rossville Truck and Tractor.

William Devere Martinek was only 61 years old when he died on February 26, 1989. Born in Silver Lake, he and his brother Bob went through school in the same class. They played side by side on the football, basketball, and baseball teams, but Bill was the victor in the race for Student Council president. The brothers also shared a '35 Dodge which had two engines ... because one was always being worked on.

A graduate of Silver Lake High School in 1945, Bill entered the Army; took basic training at Vancouver, Wash.; and then was stationed on Leyte Island in the Philippines. He found time, however, to marry a Topeka girl, Helen Richardson, on July 6, 1946, in Vancouver.

The young couple came back to Kansas after his Army stint, and Bill began "on-the-job training” in Norville Wingate’s Rossville Farm Store. In 1957, Martinek and George Stadler bought the business and renamed it Rossville Truck and Tractor Company, Inc. Martinek became sole owner in 1979.

The company advertisement in the 1971 publication of Rossville's 100th anniversary brochure is indicative of Bill's quiet, unassuming way. In the roster of employee names, Bill’s is the final signature.

Martinek served two terms on the Rossville City Council, and was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion Post, and the Lions Club. In recognition of his many years of service to the Rossville community, the City dedicated the August 1988 Tall Com Festival in his honor. He and Helen rode in style in a beautifully refurbished 1910 chain-driven International Harvester vehicle. It was rough riding, but I dare say Bill enjoyed it.

Martinek was recognized as one of the Top Ten I-H dealers for the Kansas City district in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969. He saw many changes and improvements in farm machinery during those 30 years, and sometimes regretted he hadn’t started a collection of models on International Harvester and Case I-H equipment years ago.

Life wasn't all work, however. He and Helen bowled regularly and have a box of bowling trophies from team victories. He liked sports of all kinds, and he loved to fish. He and his brother Orville loaded up their fishing poles almost every weather-decent Sunday.

"He was not one for being in the limelight," Helen and the children agreed. "He did for people without expecting in return. He enjoyed the business and being with the farmers. It was his first love."

The Martinek sons grew up with Rossville Truck and Tractor, and they will carry on the business their father loved.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to Helen, the children, his mother, and to all the others who will miss Bill Martinek so much.

Maynard Mason
This community bows in memory of Maynard Mason. Yes, to the memory along.

Before the holidays he busied himself, in his thoughtful ambitious way getting presents for friends near and dear to him -- and they were many. But he didn't get to enjoy Christmas day nor the gifts he received. He was too ill.

The photograph , a beautiful likeness he gave me, is a keepsake that I can look at only through mist-covered eyes. His obituary is now pasted on the cover opposite the pleasant face that is gone forever.

Stricken at nine, Maynard fought cheerfully and hopefully against diabetes, an affliction that medical science has sought vainly to conquer. But that wasn't enough. Flue, pneumonia, heart trouble and complications cruelly allied themselves with diabetes to take one of the most likeable boys this community ever knew. And till just a few days before the end it seemed like his fighting heart would best them all. But it wasn't to be. God commanded from the pages of the Good Book, "Suffer little children and Come unto me."

From that scriptural quotation his weary, heart-broken friends who loved him can find their only consolation: God has beckoned him to that infinite somewhere, where there is no more suffering, no more sickness, no dieting, and no more insulin. Goodbye, Maynard. God bless you. --A Friend

IN MEMORIAM
We, the teachers and students of RHS are deeply grieved over the loss of our pupil and fellow classmate, Maynard Mason. Maynard's (King's) laughter and companionship will be sadly missed by all because he had that quality, rarely found in one of his age, to make friends with both young and old. In spite of his ill health he possessed many qualities which made him a good all-around American youth. Although Maynard is gone, his memory will long linger in the minds and hearts of all who knew him.

DIES IN AUTO-TRAIN CRASH
William Paul Mathews, 23, of 412 Kansas avenue, Topeka, is dead and John Kelly, of 317 Klein street, is in serious condition in St. Francis hospital as the result of an accident Tuesday night at the Union Pacific crossing at Kiro. Both men were relief workers.

The two men were riding in a model T Ford sedan, which struck a freight train at the crossing, demolishing the car, about 9:30 Tuesday night.

Both were taken to the hospital. Matthews suffered a head injury and died at 1:50 o’clock Wednesday. Kelly has deep lacerations and a concussion, cuts and bruises on his body.

N. E. Mains, of Topeka, was sitting at the depot at Kiro when the crash occurred. The westbound train had just passed., he said, and looking up the track he remarked to Ed Reynolds, signal maintainer, that the engine apparently had started a small roadway fire.

They soon saw that it was an auto burning, and rushing up the right-of-way, found the demolished car. They extinguished the fire, and gave aid to the two passengers, who were lying on the ground, until an ambulance arrived.

Kelly apparently was driving, and asked Mains what had happened. Mains told him.

Fishing poles and tackle indicated the men were returning from a fishing trip.

Matthews was born in Topeka January 24. 1914, and had lived there all his life. He attended Parkdale and Blacksmith schools and was a graduate of Washburn rural high school.

Funeral services for Matthews were held today at 10:30 o’clock from Penwell’s chapel, burial in Memorial Park cemetery.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Rosa Matthews, of the home address; his mother and stepfather. Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Johnson, and a brother, Gail Matthews, route 1, Topeka; his father, F. L. Matthews, Thayer, Kans., one sister, Mrs. R. J. Hall, Topeka; and his grandparents, Mrs. L. A. Elliott of Thayer, and W.D. Dalton, of Topeka.
