James W. McCune, 46, passed away, June 12, 2011. Jim was born
September 23, 1964 in Kansas City, MO the son of Al and Margaret (Comstock) McCune.

He married Phyllis Rousseau in Overland Park, KS on September 3,1988.
Jim attended Pittsburg State and worked as an Employment and Training Counselor. He was a volunteer for the Shawnee County Fire District #4, an Army veteran and a Scout leader. He also enjoyed coaching, being outdoors and giving help to others. Jim was a handyman excelling in many crafts.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Randy; daughter, Lakota; brother, Bill McCune and sister, Marie Graham.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd., Topeka KS 66614.

MRS. GRACE MCCURRY
Mrs. Grace McCurry, 67, of Rossville, died May 13 in a Topeka hospital. She was born July 1, 1891, at Frankfort, Mo., and moved to Rossville nine months ago. She was a member of the Baptist Church at Salisbury, Mo.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Joe Gresser, Rossville; two sons, R. W. McCurry. San Francisco, Calif., and Ralph McCurry, Kansas City, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Salisbury, Mo. The Hurley Funeral Home of Rossville was in charge of arrangements.



MRS. GRACE MC CURRY
Mrs. Grace McCurry, mother of Mrs. Joe Gresser, died Wednesday after a brief illness in a Topeka hospital. Burial will be in Salisbury, Missouri. Mrs. McCurry moved here several months ago from her home in Salisbury.

Alberta M. McDaniel, 43, of 922 Michigan, Topeka, died in a Topeka hospital Saturday.

She was born in Rossville, January 29, 1908. She had been a member of the Silver Lake Baptist Church.

She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William McDaniel, Silver Lake; four brothers, Marion and William Jr., of Silver Lake, and Robert and John, of Topeka; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Combs, Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Ruth Lester, Springdale, Kan., and Mrs. Evelyn Berry of Topeka.

Gladys Viola McDaniel

Gladys Viola McDaniel, daughter of George King and Cora Steel King was born May 29, 1894 at Troy Mills. Iowa. She departed this life on the 19th day of July, 1970 at the Holton hospital.

On April 10, 191S she was united in marriage to Clarence McDaniel of Delia. The couple resided in the Delia area until Mr. McDaniel’s death May 20. 1956. Shortly thereafter she moved to the Holton area where she has resided with her son since.

She was a member of the Mt. Olive Methodist Church. She was a Sunday School Superintendent and taught in the church school department here for several years. She was also a devoted mother over many years.

She is survived by one son, Warren King McDaniel of the home, one sister, Mrs. Mable Keller of Rossville, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Verda Bottom of Topeka, one brother-in-law, Mr. Olen McDaniel of Alma, Arkansas. Several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at the Mercer Funeral home on July 21, 1970 at 2 p.m. Rev. Floyd Nolin officiated. Vocal music was furnished by Mrs. Joe Zlatnik and Mr. LaVerne Zlatnik. They were accompanied by Mrs. Dean Stous. Pallbearers were Lester Cooper, Fred Kruger, Howard Houck, Frank Carpenter, Oren Bond and Lynn Keller. Interment was in the Delia Cemetery.

James Vernon McDaniel, 76, formerly of Rossville, KS, passed away on March 12, 2010 at Stormont-Vail Health Center. James was born in Coffeyville, KS on June 18, 1933, the son of Benjamin and Julia (Taylor) McDaniel. He married LaVonne M. Burns on February 20,1956, she survives. Preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister. Surviving family members include: sister; Laura Romines, Coffeyville KS; daughters; Debra (Rodney) Cote, Havelock NC; Deena (Delbert Alt) McDaniel, Wichita KS; sons, James Richard (Angie) and Jerry (Terry), both of Topeka KS; 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation is planned. Memorial service pending.

Marion Bryan McDaniel
Marion Bryan McDaniel, 88, Silver Lake, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, at a Rossville nursing home after a long illness.

Mr. McDaniel was a retired carpenter. He had served several terms as mayor of Silver Lake.

He was born Jan. 3, 1897, in Kentucky, the son of Nora Wyatt and William McDaniel. He spent his early life in Maysville, Ky., and lived in Silver Lake since 1945.

Mr. McDaniel was a member of First Baptist Church, Silver Lake. He was a former member of Ohio I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 132 and the Silver Lake volunteer, Fire Department. He served on the Silver Lake City Council 20 years.

His wife, Mrs. Lutie Wyatt McDaniel, died in 1970.

Survivors include a son, Robert J. McDaniel, Silver Lake; three brothers, Bill McDaniel, Silver Lake, Robert I. McDaniel, Topeka, and John McDaniel, Seal Beach, Calif; a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Berry, Phoenix, Ariz; and three grandsons.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 301 Railroad Ave., Silver Lake, 66539.

ALMA, Ark. — Olen Cass McDaniel, 81, Alma, Ark., died Monday, March 1, 1988, at a Fort Smith, Ark., hospital.

Mr. McDaniel was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was born March 13, 1907, at Delia, Kan., one of seven children of William Etley and Abbie Jane Baker McDaniel. He grew up in Delia and lived in California before he moved to Arkansas.

Mr. McDaniel was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church and Alma Chapter of Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Lee, Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Billy Joe McDaniel, Pleasant Hill, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in National Cemetery at Fort Smith. Mr. McDaniel will lie in state today at Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren, Ark.

Robert Isaac McDaniel, 82, Topeka, died Thursday, September 4, 1986, at a Topeka hospital where he was admitted Tuesday.

Mr. McDaniel was a printer more than 37 years. He was superintendent of publications in the composing room of Capper’s Farmer, Household Magazine, Kansas Farmer and Missouri Ruralist, 17 years. He retired from Stauffer Publications July 1, 1967.

He was an active square dance caller more than 25 years and helped organize the Northeast Kansas Callers Association. He was president of Kansas State Callers Association and Northeast Kansas Square Dance Callers Association. He retired from square dance calling in May 1972.

He was born November 18, 1903 at Rossville, the son of William M. Mcfianiel, Sr. and Nora Wyatt McDaniel. He attended Silver Lake schools and spent most of his life in Topeka.

Mr. McDaniel was a member of Seaman Congregational United Church of Christ and Topeka Typographical Union and an honorary member of Northeast Kansas Square Dance Callers Association.

He was married to Mary Fae Luthye November 24, 1926, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Larry N. McDaniel, Holden, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Berry, Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, William McDaniel, Jr., Silver Lake; and three grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday at Seaman Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Relatives and friends met from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Seaman Congregational United Church of Christ, 2036 N. Terry Kay Albright McDaniel, age 60, of Topeka passed away Friday morning, December 14, 2018 at Midland Hospice Care. Terry was born October 31, 1958 in Topeka the daughter of Charles Albright and Rebecca Fritz. She received a Bachelors degree from Barton County. She married Jerry McDaniel October 18, 1985 in Rossville. She worked and was active at the Potawatomi Prairie Band Reservation for many years. She is survived by her husband of over 33 years, Jerry of Topeka; her father, Charles Albright of Topeka; two sons, Jeremy (Christina) McDaniel of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Robert (Melissa) McDaniel of Topeka; two daughters, Andrea (Jermaine McDonald) Dickson of Topeka and Jami (Moses Jr.) Greasham of Wichita; two brothers, Jerry Albright of Overland Park, KS and Dean Jarmel of San Francisco, CA; a sister, Jennifer Jarmel-Shedd of San Francisco, CA and six grandchildren. Memorial services will be Friday, December 21, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Silver Lake United Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Wilmont Holz returned home Monday night from Blandinsville, Ill. where they were called Wednesday of last week by the critical illness of her father, Dell McDermeit. He passed way early Thursday morning before Mr. and Mrs. Holz could reach home. Mr. McDermeit, 75, died at the Dunblazier Nursing Home after a critical illness of two weeks. He had been in poor health for the previous two years. His wife preceded him in 1929. Surviving are one son, Joseph McDermeit, three daughters, Mrs. Edna Holz, Rossville; Mrs. Louella Bunks, Blandinsville, and Mrs. Iola Oard of Mt. Union, Iowa. Funeral services were held Saturday August 25, at 1 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Burial was at Hamilton, Illinois.

Mrs. Elsie M. McDermott, 58, Reno, Nev., died in a hospital Monday, October 25, 1976 after a long Illness. She had cancer.

Mrs. McDermott was born February 15, 1918, at Rossville and moved with her family to Silver Lake, where she was graduated from high school.

She was married to James J. McDermott in Topeka. He survives at the home.

Other survivors include a son, James M. McDermott, Reno; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Maupin, Los Angeles; a brother, Curtis, “Jack” Trimble, Topeka, and a granddaughter.

Services were at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Reno. Burial was in a Reno cemetery.

MARY GLANNON McDERMOTT was born February 19, 1875 at St Louis Missouri. At the age of 5 she moved with her parents to Kansas where she grew to womanhood. In 1892 she was married to James McDermott of Wheaton. To this union were born six children, two dying in infancy. She departed this life at St Francis hospital Topeka, Kansas, January 6, 1937. Funeral service were held, Friday morning at 9:30 at St Columbkille Catholic church at Blaine. She was laid to rest beside her husband. He preceded her in death, February 1921. She leaves to mourn her death, daughters, Mrs. Walt Pierson of Blaine, Mrs. Dave Rasch of P(the remaining is cut off-could be Perry), Mrs Clint Ramer of Silver Lake, one son, James McDermott of I(cutoff). She also leaves seven grandchildren, four sisters, Misses Sadie and Celia Glannon of Alton, Illinois: Mrs F(cutoff) Dwiggens of Alton, Missouri: Mrs Will Brube of Scott City, Kansas, four brothers, John Glannon of Blaine, Allan Glannon of Kansas City, Missouri, Lawrence Glannon of Wheaton and Richard Glannon of Alton, Illinois.

HUTCHINSON — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth McDermott, 85, formerly of Delia, died Thursday at a Hutchinson hospital after a long illness.

She was born Jan. 28, 1895, in Delia, the daughter of Edward and Catherine Fennell McNeive. She
moved to Hutchinson in 1936.

Mrs. McDermott was a telephone company oper¬ator at Delia for 10 years.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson.

She was married to James Murry. He died in 1918. She later was married to Jim McDermott. He died in 1952.

Survivors include a son, James E. Murry, Wichita, two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church at Hutchinson. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. A parish rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Monday at Johnson Funeral Home, Hutchinson. Mrs. McDermott will lie in state from 11 a.m. Sunday to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Arnold Wayne McDiffett
Arnold Wayne McDiffett, 61, Topeka, died Thursday, May 9, 1996, at his home. He had cancer.

Mr. McDiffett worked for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

He was born July 10, 1934, at Dwight, the son of Lorenzo Wallace and Arnolla Keturah Fisher McDiffett. He was graduat¬ed from Dwight High School.

Mr. McDiffett was a member of the United Methodist Church at Dwight, North Post No. 400 of the American Legion and Rubber Workers Local No. 307.

He was married to Judy A. Weiler on March 26, 1960, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Nancy K. Dolezilek, Kenai, Alaska; a son, Richard W. McDiffett, Carbondale; two brothers, Ellis McDiffett, Overland Park, and Earl McDiffett, Rossville; two sisters, Carol Peters and Joanne Evans, both of Dwight; and one grandson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Davidson Funeral Chapel. Burial with military graveside services conducted by Post No. 400 of the American Legion will be in the Welcome Cemetery at Dwight. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, 66606.

BRUCE E. MCDIFFETT
Bruce E. McDiffett, 51, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at his home in Rossville.

He was born Sept. 28, 1959, at Council Grove, the son of the late Earl W. and Phyllis J. Easter McDiffett. The family moved to Topeka and then to Rossville following the 1966 tornado. He graduated from Rossville High School in 1977.

Bruce worked for Anderson Custom Booths and Upholstery in Rossville for many years. He was an avid “Dawgs” sports fan. Bruce was a lifetime member of the North America Hunting Club, and was a member of Duck’s Unlimited for many years. Wear your camo to honor this.

Survivors include his brother, Steve McDiffett, Rossville; a niece, Josey McDiffett and a nephew, Trace McDiffett both of Rossville; along with many cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 29, at the Rossville United Methodist Church.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Bruce E. McDiffett, 51, died Dec. 22, 2010, at his home in Rossville. He was born Sept. 28, 1959, at Council Grove, the son of the Earl W. and Phyllis J. Easter McDiffett. The family moved to Topeka and then to Rossville following the 1966tornado. He graduated from Rossville High School in 1977.

Rossville, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. McDiffett was a laminator of earthmover tires at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 35 years before he retired in 1994. He served in the Navy during the Korean War.

He was born Nov. 30, 1931. near Alta Vista, the son of Lorenzo W. and Arnolla K. Fisher McDiffett. He was raised at Dwight and had lived in Rossville since 1966.

Mr. McDiffett was a life member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville, United Rubber Workers Local No 307 at Topeka and the Varmint Hunters Association.

He was married to Phyllis Easter on Aug. 20, 1954, at Council Grove. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Steve McDiffett and Bruce McDiffett, both of Rossville; two sisters, Carol Peters and JoAnn Evans, both of Dwight; a brother, Ellis McDiffett, Overland Park; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. McDiffett will lie in state from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where relatives and friends will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Earl W. McDiffett, 65, Rossville, died Friday, April 2,4, 1998, at a Topeka hospital.

He was born November 30, 1931, in rural Alta Vista, the son of Lorenzo W. and Arnolla K. Fisher McDiffett.

He grew up in the Dwight community. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, on the USS PCEC-886. He had lived in Tope-ka until he moved to Rossville in 1966. He was a laminator in earth mover tires for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Topeka, where he had worked for 35 years before retiring in November 1994. He was a lifetime member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville. He was a member of United Rubber Workers Union Local 307, Topeka, and was a member of the Varmint Hunters Association.

On August 20, 1954, he was married to Phyllis Easter at Council Grove. She survives at the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Steve McDiffett and Bruce McDiffett, both of Rossville; a daughter-in-law, Cindy McDiffett, Rossville; two sisters, Carol Peters and JoAnn Evans, both of Dwight; a brother, Ellis McDiffett, Overland Park; a granddaughter and a grandson. He was preceded in death by five brothers.

Visitation is from 6:30 until 7:30 Tuesday (this evening), at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home. His service is at 10:30 Wednesday at the funeral home in St. Marys. Burial will be in the Rossville Cemetery.

Norma Jean McDiffett
Norma Jean McDiffett, 86, passed away Thursday, May 21-, 2015 at the Rossville Health Care Center, Rossville.

She was born August 24, 1928 at Alta Vista, the daughter of Gilbert and Margaret Rodgers Beagel. She was one of a family of seven children and lived most of her younger years on the Beagel homestead west of Alta Vista. She graduated from Dwight High School.

Norma was united in marriage to Pat McDiffett. Together they had two children, Bob and Patti. She was always involved in their lives in one way or another.

She retired from American States Insurance Company. Norma loved camping and cooking (She was the best pie maker around). She joined the Wheathearts square dance club and was a 15 year member. Her love was square dancing and also round dancing. She loved her family dearly.

Mrs. McDiffett was preceded in death by her parents Margaret and Gilbert Beagel. Her husband Pat; two grandsons, Dwight Meade and Daniel McDiffett; two sisters, Eleanor Modig and Virginia Beagel; three brothers, Dwight, Donald and Robert Beagel.

Norma is survived by a son, Bob (Elaine) McDiffett, Wamego; a daughter, Patti (Chuck) Meade, Rossville; a brother, James (Terry) Beagel, Chicago, IL; three grandsons, Jared Meade, John McDiffett and Russell McDiffett.; granddaughters, Tonya Hatina, Debbie Boyle, Donna Gill and Doris Rollo; great-grandchildren, Erika & Emily Hatina, Giauna Meade, Jaci, Kelsey and Kyra McDiffett, Tiara Boles, Johnny Gill, Ben Rollo and Sheldon Rollo.

It was Mrs. McDiffett’s request to be cremated. Memorial services were 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 30,2015 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. SILVER LAKE - Pat "Junior” McDiffett, 49, Silver Lake, died Friday in a Topeka hospital.

He was born Jan. 29, 1926, at Dwight. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Topeka for 28 years and retired June, 1975.

He served with the U.S. Army paratroopers in World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of United Rubber Workers Union Local No. 307.

He was married to Norma Beagel in March, 1947, at Emporia. She survives at the home.

Other survivors include a son, Robert McDiffett, 1952 Wanamaker Road; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Meade, Rossville; his mother, Mrs. Arnolla McDiffett, Dwight; five brothers, Earl McDiffett, Rossville; Arnold McDiffett, 4013 Rochester Road, Ellis McDiffett, Kansas City, Raymond McDiffett, Junction City, and Scott McDiffett, Alta Vista; two sisters, Mrs. Howard Peters and, Mrs. L. D. Evans, both of Dwight, and four grandsons.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Graveside services will be conducted by the VFW at Rossville Cemetery.

ROSSVILLE - Phyllis June McDiffett, 72, Rossville, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Rossville Valley Manor.

She was born Aug. 17, 1931, at Harveyville, the daughter of Arch and Maude DeWitt Easter. She had lived in the Rossville community since 1966.

She graduated from Council Grove High School. She and her husband moved to Rossville from Topeka in August 1966. She was a homemaker and seamstress, sewing for many years in the Rossville community. She was a member of the auxiliary to Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31, American Legion, at Rossville.

She married Earl McDiffett on Aug. 20, 1954, at Council Grove. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1998.

Surviving are two sons, Steven and Bruce McDiffett, both of Rossville; a daughter-in-law, Cindy McDiffett, Rossville; a sister, Carol Tanner, Coos Bay, Ore.; and grandchildren, Josey and Trace.

Mrs. McDiffeett was cremated. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Rossville United Methodist Church. Inurnment in the Rossville Cemetery will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of America Hospice or to Rossville Valley Manor, and sent in care of Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys.

JUNCTION CITY — Raymond L. McDiffett, 73, Junction City, died Wednesday, May 1, 1996, at a Junction City hospital.

Mr. McDiffett was a transportation warehouse supervisor at Fort Riley for 24 years before he retired in 1987. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946.

He was born July 30, 1922, in Geary County, the son of Lorenzo W. "Pat'’ and Arnolla K. Fisher McDiffett.

Mr. McDiffett was a member of First Christian Church and past commander of Post No. 45 of the American Legion and 40 et 8 Voiture No. 1029, all at Junction City.

He was married to Mildred E. Chitty on March 3, 1947, in Geary County. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Judy E, Kramps, Olathe; two sons, Raymond L. McDiffett, Craig, Colo., and Rodney K. McDiffett, Edgerton; three brothers, Ellie McDiffett, Overland Park, Earl McDiffett, Rossville, and Arnold McDiffett, Topeka; two sisters, Carol Peters and Joann Evans, both of Dwight; nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church at Junction City. Burial will be in Welcome Cemetery in Geary County. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Mass-Hinitt-Alexander Funeral Home at Junction City. Patricia Jeanette McDonald, 90, of Topeka, KS died June 11, 2015, at the House at Midland Care. She was born April 4, 1925, the daughter of James and Ruth Weaver. She was a member of Community Church of Topeka and was an active supporter in missions all over the world. Addi¬tionally, Tricia volunteered at the Topeka Christian Lending Library for many years.

She married Alden Harold “Mac” McDonald on
October 31,1953, in Mississippi. He preceded her in death on January 19, 2014. Tricia is survived by a daughter, Shari (Ed) Halloran of Topeka, two grandsons, James Edward (Becki) Halloran of Topeka, Jeffrey Alden (Becky) Halloran of Kansas City and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. today, Sunday, June 14, 2015 at the Community Church of Topeka, 1819 SW 21st Street. The funeral service will be 1:30 P.M. Monday at the church. Interment will follow in Topeka Cemetery.

Wilma "Jeanie" McDonald, 78, Topeka, died Saturday, July 7, 2007 at St. Francis Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 16, 1929 in Topeka, the daughter of Roy and Lois Edwards Hammond.

She married Eugene McDonald on Feb. 16, 1946 in Rossville. He survives.

Other survivors include four sons, Rick McDonald and wife, Ramona of Tecumseh, Lloyd McDonald and wife, Kim of Topeka, Ken McDonald and wife, Linda of Topeka, and Tom McDonald and wife, Margaret of Berryton; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Hammond of Tucker, TX and L. Chuck Hammond of Bogata, TX; one sister, Della Siems of Homewood, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister,
DeDe Hanneman and three brothers, LeRoy Hammond, Darwin Hammond, and Bill Hammond.

Jeanie was the mother of "Wagon Masters" and Southbound" country bands.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel. Interment will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.

ONAGA - Mrs. Carolyn A. McDowell, 47, Onaga, died Wednesday, July 6, 1988, at an Onaga hospital. She had cancer.

Mrs. McDowell was a former aide at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Onaga.

She was born Nov. 3, 1940, northeast of Emmett, the daughter of Bill and Julia Bahner Brees. She attended Halligan and Emmett grade schools and was graduated in 1958 from Emmett High School.

Mrs. McDowell was a member of the Congregational Church, the church choir, Onaga Extension Homemakers Unit and was an active Girl Scout leader, all at Onaga.

She was married to Larry McDowell of Onaga April 23, 1960, at Emmett. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Krohn, Wheaton, and Colleen Whitmore, Belle Plaine; a son, Terry McDowell, at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brees, Emmett [sic Delia correction written in]; two brothers, Donald Brees and William Lee Brees, both of Emmett; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Congregational Church at Onaga. Burial will be in Onaga Cemetery. ONAGA - Larry K. McDowell, 53, Onaga, died Friday, Feb. 1, 1991, at a Topeka hospital of a heart attack.

Mr. McDowell worked 32 years for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Topeka. He was an Army veteran.

He was born April 25, 1937, at Topeka, the son of Kyle W. and Eva Tubbs McDowell. The family moved in 1947 to Onaga, where he attended Onaga schools. He was graduated in 1956 from Onaga High School and attended a junior college in St. Joseph, Mo.

Mr. McDowell was a member of the Congregational Church in Onaga, Fraternal Order of Eagles aerie in Holton, Local No. 307 of the United Rubber Workers of America Union in Topeka, National Rifle Association and Bass Anglers Sportsmen's Society.

He was married to Carolyn A. Brees on April 23, 1960, at Emmett. She died July 6, 1988. He was married to Marna Kaff on Aug. 18, 1989, in Wells Creek Church near Belvue. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Krohn, Wheaton, and Colleen Whitmore, Belle Plain; a son, Terry McDowell, Cameron, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Kristina Ann Kaff, at home; two brothers, Gary McDowell, Guthrie, Okla., and Michael McDowell, Onaga; and six grandchildren.

A.E. McElvain Dies
Alford E. McElvain, 86, of Wamego, died Thursday at an Alma nursing home.

He was born Dec. 2, 1878, at Rossville. He was employed as a telegrapher for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1902. He served as agent and telegrapher at Rossville, St. Marys, Hays, Randolph and Wamego. He retired in 1946 and spent the rest of his life at Wamego.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at St. Marys, Consistory in Topeka, Abdallah Shrine at Leavenworth and the Old Timers Club of Union Pacific Railroad.

He was married to Louise DeMarais at St. Marys in 1905. She died in 1957. He also was preceded in death by a son, Alford McElvain.

Survivors include two daughter, Mrs. Rosemary Klesath, Topeka, and Mrs. Ethel Umscheid, Wamego; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Kuelper, Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with burial in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery at Wamego.

Mrs. Josephine McElvain
Mrs. Josephine McElvain passed away April 3, in Denver, Colo. after a long illness. She was one of the fine long-time residents of Rossville.

She was born December 22, 1859, at Zionville, Indiana, and came to Rossville in a covered wagon with her parents, at the age of nine, and live in the vicinity of Rossville all her life.

She was the last survivor of a family of sixteen children.

She was married to Melvin [sic Melville] McElvain in Rossville who preceded her in death Dec. 30, 1940. They reared their four children here.

She is survived by one son A.E. McElvain of Wamego, and two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Cless and Mrs. Ethel Kuelper of Denver, Colo., and another daughter, Mary, preceded her in death. A number of grand and great grandchildren mourn her passing.

Funeral services were held today in the Rossville Christian church in charge of the pastor, Maurice Graham.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Lorene Harth and Mrs. Maxine Trimble. Miss Shirley Mesmer accompanied at the piano.

Interment was in Rossville cemetery.

Death claimed one of Rossville's pioneer settlers, when Melvin S. McElvain, passed on early Monday forenoon. He had been a resident here 68 years, coming here in 1872. Two years later he married Josphine [sic Josephine] Heslet on March 19, 1874. Four children were born to the union three of whom survive.

Mr. McElvain was the eldest of three brothers in his family. He was born in Henry County, Ill, [May] 3, 1850, and would have been [91] years old next May. In his early years here he farmed. After moving to town in the early nineties, he engaged in the produce business and served as mail carrier [missing]

He was a member of the Christian church.

Beside his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Pearl Cless and Ethel Kuelpe of Denver; one son Alfred of [ ]; eleven grandchildren and [ ] great-grandchildren. [Brothers] preceded him in death several years ago.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 1 in the Christian church conducted by G. Hor[ ] of Topeka. Music was furnished by Mrs. Grace Rogers and [M ] Navarre, accompanied by Mrs. Bertha James.

Pallbearers were Messrs. C.W. [ ] baum, Guy Startup [ ] Morris Bond [ ].

Memorial services were at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, Silver Spring, Md., for William Bryan McFerren, 82, Silver Spring, who died Sunday, August 24, 1986, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. He had cancer.

Mr. McFerren was born August 3, 1904, at Moonlight, Ks. near Chapman, the son of George W. and Elizabeth Brechbill McFerren.

He graduated from Baker University Baldwin, in 1927.

Mr. McFerren was athletic coach and math teacher at Emmett for six years and principal the last two. He served four years as principal and coach at Fostoria and three years as a math teacher and coach at Partridge in Reno County. When the male teachers of Pottawatomie County organized the Knights of the Hickory Stick in the early ‘30s, Mr. McFerren was elected president. At the beginning of World War II, he trained radio operators for the Army Air Force and served as a flight radio operator for the Air Transport Command and later with the International Division of Trans World Airlines.

Mr. McFerren was a champion golfer, winning many tournaments in the Eastern Kansas Golf Association circuit during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He was club champion many times at Maryland clubs and, next to shooting his age every year since he was 67 years old, and the five holes-in-one he has had, his greatest satisfaction in golf was winning the Maryland State Father-Son championship with each of his three sons – a distinction unmatched in the history of the tournament.

He took a special interest in helping the young golfers develop their games. He maintained an interest in his high school students over the years and had attended the 50-year celebration of the classes he taught at Emmett until this year when illness prevented his coming.

On his 80th birthday in 1984, the Maryland Inter-Club Seniors Golf Association inaugurated an annual tournament in his name. The third annual “Bill McFerren Classic” will be played at the Maryland University Golf Course on September 17.

He was married to Elizabeth Reilly May 26, 1932, at Emmett. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Fulton, Las Vegas, Nev., Mrs. Jean Cannefax, North St. Paul, Minn., and Marilyn McFerren, Reston, Va.; three sons, Bill McFerren, Jr., Silver Springs, Md., Jerry McFerren, Phoenix Ariz., and Bob McFerren, Houston, Tex.; two brothers, Phares McFerren, Rancho Bernardo, Calif., and Kenneth McFerren, Austin, Tex.; a sister Mrs. Ruth Cutrell, Chanute; 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mr. McFerren’s body was cremated. Private family inurnment was held. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Hospital Hospice., Silver Spring, Md. Collins Funeral Home of Silver Spring was in charge of arrangements.

She was married to Ernest Reser Nov. 17, 1915, at St. Marys. He died in 1956. She was married to Warren McGann in 1960 in Topeka. He survives.

Ardeth McGinnis
Ardeth Rae McGinnis, 61, Rossville, died Tuesday morning, March 18, 1997, at the Rossville Valley Manor.

She was born November 9, 1935, in Ionia, the daughter of Glenn Ray and Ida Agnes Miles Wright.

She was married to Charles N. “Nolan” McGinnis on March 21, 1954, at Ionia. The couple moved to Rossville in 1967. Mr. McGinnis died February 11,1991.

Ardeth was graduated from Ionia High School in 1953. Mr. and Mrs. McGinnis had owned and operated McGinnis’ Mainstreeter Restaurant in Rossville. She was a member of the Auxiliary to Jimmie Lillard Post #31 of the American Legion at Rossville, and the Gage Center Women’s Bowling League of Topeka.

She is survived by three daughters, Danielle Schuetz, Rossville, Stephanie Conner, Johnson City, Tenn., and Leslie McGinnis, Shawnee; one son, Monte McGinnis, Oskaloosa; one sister, Merna Keeler, Mankato; one brother, Edgar E. Wright, Mankato; 10 grandchildren; and one great- grandson.

The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka.

Her service was at 10:00 Friday at the Rossville Christian Church;
interment was in the Rossville
Cemetery.

Mrs. McGinnis and her husband owned and operated McGinnis’ Mainstreeter Restaurant in Rossville.

Mrs. McGinnis was a member of the auxiliary to Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville and the Gage Center Women’s Bowling League in Topeka.

She married Charles N. “Nolan” McGinnis on March 21, 1954, in Ionia. He died Feb. 11, 1991.

Survivors include three daughters, Danielle Schuetz, Rossville, Stephanie Conner, Johnson City, Tenn., and Leslie McGinnis, Shawnee; a son, Monte McGinnis, Oskaloosa; a sister, Merna Keeler, Mankato; a brother, Edgar E. Wright, Mankato; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Rossville Christian Church. Burial will be at the Rossville Cemetery. ROSSVILLE — Charles N. "Nolan” McGinnis, 59, Rossville, died Monday, Feb. 11, 1991, at his home.

Mr. McGinnis was a telegraph operator and clerk for Rock Island and Cotton Belt Railroad before he retired in August 1990 for health reasons.

He and his wife also owned and operated the Mainstreeter Restaurant and Club in Rossville. He served in the Army from February 1952 to February 1954.

He was born July 17, 1931, at Esbon, the son of Stephen F. and Elsie Michler McGinnis. He was graduated from Montrose Rural High School in 1951. He attended Kansas Wesleyan University at Salina and was graduated from a telegraphers school in Pueblo, Colo.

Mr. McGinnis was a member of Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks Union and Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville.

He was married to Ardeth R. Wright March 21, 1954, at Ionia. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Danielle Schuetz, Rossville, Stephanie Conner, Johnson City, Term., and Leslie McGinnis, Shawnee; a son, Monte McGinnis, Oskaloosa; a brother, Wayne McGinnis, Branson, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Christian Church in Rossville. Military graveside services will be conducted by Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. McGinnis will lie in state after 8 a.m. today at Parker-Price Mortuary where family and friends will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. today. He later will lie in state from 8 until 10 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary and after 1 p.m. Thursday at the church. CLAIR LAMAR McGINNIS
Clair Lamar McGinnis, oldest son of Steven and Elsie McGinnis, was born August 30, 1929, at Lebanon, Ks., and departed this life on December 22, 1978, in an accident near Durant, Miss.

His childhood was spent in the Mankato, Esbon and Webber communities

He enlisted in the Marine Corps at an early age and served in Korea. He was an active member of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Illinois.

He was baptised in the Wapella,
Illinois Christian Church on April 12,
1973.

He was married to Mary C. Monahan in 1951. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mary, of the home in Wapella, Ill., and the following children: Edith Melville, Middletown, N.Y.; Michael McGinnis, Topeka; Susan Brown, Jacksonville, Ill.; Thomas McGinnis, Bloomington, Ill.; Colleen McGinnis, Jacksonville, Ill.; Carol McGinnis, Topeka; and Peggy and Peter McGinnis of the home. He also leaves six grandchildren; two brothers, Nolan McGinnis, Rossville, and Wayne McGinnis, El Paso, Tex., and their families.

His mother and two infant sons preceded him in death.

Mary Catherine McGinnis
Mary Catherine McGinnis, 81, of Topeka, passed away Sept. 20, 2008 at Midland Hospice House.

She was born Aug. 8, 1927 in Elkins, West Virginia to Thomas William and Leona Mae (Rohrbaugh) Monahan.

Mary married Claire L. McGinnis in 1952. He preceded her in death Dec. 22, 1978. She was also preceded in death by a brother Thomas F. Monahan.

She worked many years in the restaurant industry.

Mary is survived by 5 daughters, Edith L. Melville, Elizabeth City, NC; Susan Farmer, Jacksonville, IL; Colleen Neff, Roodhouse, IL; Carol Lewis, Bourbon, MO and Peggy Deghand, Topeka, KS; 3 sons, Michael W. McGinnis, Orrstown, PA; Thomas McGinnis and Peter McGinnis, Topeka, KS. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 2 brothers, Michael Monahan, Riverside, CA and Charles Patrick Monahan, San Diego, CA.

Mary will lie in state after 2:00 p.m., Mon., Sept. 22, 2008 at the Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. that evening. Services will be 9:00 a.m., Tues., Sept. 23, 2008 at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held 4:00 p.m. Tues. at the Esbon Cemetery in Esbon, KS. Ruth McGlothlin
Ruth Whearty Wanick McGlothlin, 72, Mesa, Ariz.,, formerly of Topeka, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 1995, at a hospital in Mesa.

Mrs. McGlothlin was a nurse. She worked at Winter General Hospital in Topeka, Sedgwick County Hospital, and then was a school nurse for USD No. 259.

She was born March 16, 1923, in Rossville, the daughter of Martin and Ella Johnson Whearty. She was reared in Rossville and was graduated from the Jane C. Stormont School of Nursing in Topeka in 1944.

She married Edward Wanick in March 1945 at Topeka. He died Aug. 27, 1981. She married Bob McGlothlin June 18, 1983, in Mesa, Ariz. He died Jan. 4, 1991.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Stephen Wanick, Peoria, Ariz., a daughter, Diana Davis, Wichita; two brothers, Galen Whearty, Wichita, and Lester Whearty, Sun City, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Chapel. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Mrs. McGlothlin will lie in state after noon today at the funeral home. Donald V. McGranahan

Donald V. McGranahan, 86, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at a Topeka hospital.

He was born August 4, 1935, at Emmett, the son of George G. and Cleo B. Bartlett McGranahan. Don graduated from Emmett High School. He served in the Army Natonal Guard.

Don worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Topeka for 41 ½ years. He was a member of the Emmett United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Galen D. McGranahan; a stepson, Damon Magette, a son-in-law Terry Kubes, and a grandson, Jared Cheek.

Don and Janice K. Magette were united in marriage on March 24, 1977, at Topeka. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his children, Debra Kubes, Ness City, Trudy Padilla, Paola, Donala (LeAnn) McGranahan, Topeka and Bruce McGranahan, Wamego; a stepson, Brandon (Joan) Magette, St. Marys; [sic] [two daughters, Debra Kubes, Ness City, and Trudy Padilla, Paola]; 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

GEORGE McGRANAHAN
George McGranahan, 84, Emmett, died Friday, June 6, 1986, at the Onaga Hospital.

Mr. McGranahan was a retired farmer.

He was born September 20, 1901, near Warsaw, Mo., the son of Daniel Theodore and Laura Ann Cartright McGranahan. He lived in Emmett since he was 17 years old.

Mr. McGranahan was a member of the United Methodist Church and Emmett Service Club, both in Emmett.

He married Cleo B. Bartlett in 1926, at Westmoreland. She survives. A son, Galen McGranahan, died May 20, 1986.

Other survivors include a son, Donald V. McGranahan, Rossville; a sister, Mrs. Betty Waller, Independence, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Emmett. Burial was in St. Clere Cemetery. The family met with friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Verschelden Funeral Home.

OTTAWA - Emmett McGrath, 86, Route 4, Ottawa, died Monday, May 14, at his home.

Mr. McGrath was a farmer and dairyman in the Delia community before he moved in 1971 to the Ottawa community where he farmed.

He was born Dec. 19, 1898, at Holton, the son of Matthew and Margaret McAsey McGrath.

Mr. McGrath was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Ottawa.

He was married to Mary Bauer Oct. 3, 1928, at Delia. She survives. A daughter, Frances McGrath, died in 1948, and a son, Robert McGrath, died in 1954.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jean Floersch, Ottawa; three brothers, George McGrath, Emporia, Gerald McGrath, Ottawa, and Harry McGrath, Compton, Ark.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa. Burial will be at noon Thursday in Mount Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Mr. McGrath will lie in state until 8 a.m. Thursday at Dengel and Son Mortuary at Ottawa where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today.

Frances Elizabeth McGrath, 16, of Delia, died Saturday afternoon in a Topeka hospital. She was born January 4, 1932, at Harris, and had spent most of her life at Delia.

She was a member of the senior class at Delia High School. She leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett McGrath of Delia; one sister, Jean Marie, and one brother, Robert, both of the home.

Private graveside services will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Marys, the time to be announced from the Brennan Funeral Home.
