| 9451 |  | Obituary- Schlup, Walter 2 A Friend Rossville lost a friend this week. Walt Schlup was put to rest Tues¬day with military honors. Walt was the man behind the pump. He served as public water and sewer maintenance man. Every month Walt would make the trips to every home in the community to read the water meters. The year around he maintained the pumps at the city water works and' some¬times in the summer dry periods he would be on duty 16 to 20 hours a day to assure a full supply of water for the citizens of the town. In case of a city fire, Walt would be at his station at the water works to keep the tower at top level. Among other duties he performed was the maintenance and operation of the sewer disposal plant south of Rossville. Yes, Walt performed these important duties for Rossville for a number of years. If a person went out on the street and asked people if they knew Walt Schlup they would probably all say: “Yes, I know Wait, but I don't know anything about him.” Walt was a friend of everyone but we wonder just how many really knew him for the many important services he rendered the entire community seven days a week, the year around. NOTICE—Anyone having tools or belongings of the late Walter Schlup is asked to please leave them with Dale Ruff, Rossville. Walter Schlup who is confined to Winter Veterans Hospital in Topeka is reported to be very ill. He served as Rossville’s Water Commissioner before his illness in November. Last reports were that he is in a coma and kept in oxygen. | |
| 9452 |  | Obituary- Schmid, Theodore Theodore Joseph ‘Teddy’ Schmid Theodore Joseph “Teddy” Schmid, 14, Topeka, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 1994, at a Topeka hospital. He was an eight grade student at Rossville Grade School. He was born Sept. 25, 1979, in Parsons, the son of Ted L. and Carrie Sevart Schmid. He moved to Topeka in 1989. He was a member of Foursquare Church in Parsons. Survivors include his parents, Ted and Carrie Schmid, Topeka; three sisters, Kelly Hudnall, Lufkin, Texas, Robyn O’Malley, Scammon, and Mendy Schmid, at home; two brothers Kyle Schmid and Matthew Schmid, both at home; and grandparents, John West and Ruth West, Joplin, Mo., and George Sevart and Loretta Sevart, Parsons. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Assembly of God Church, 500 S.W. 27th. Burial will be at Prairie Home Cemetery, N.W. 35th and Menoken Road. He will lie in state from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Parker-Price Mortuary where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. He will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Schmitz, 44, Topeka, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 1994, at a Topeka hospital where she was admitted after she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Saturday. She was born Aug. 25, 1950, in Wamego, the daughter of Frank H. and Winifred E. Decker Stach. She received a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1972 from Kansas State University in Manhattan where she was affiliated with Kappa Delta sorority. She was a secretary for the Menninger Foundation. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. She was married to Urban J. Schmitz July 12, 1974, in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Matthew J. Schmitz, Manhattan, and Nathan P. Schmitz, at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stach, Rossville; a sister, Virginia Meyer, Rossville; and a grandfather, Ernest Decker, Rossville. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Mrs. Schmitz will lie in state from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Schneider, 60, Topeka, was killed late Sunday, Aug. 20, 1995, when the vehicle he was driving left Interstate 70 and overturned near the Snokomo exit in Wabaunsee County. He was born Feb. 14, 1935, in Nortonville, the son of Charles and Oleva Good Schneider. He had served in the Navy. He was a truck driver for Fleming Foods 36 years. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and Local No. 696 of the Teamsters Union. He was married to Bonnie Gerety Oct. 7, 1961, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Julie Ann Schneider, Lisa Marie Schneider and Janet Lynn Schneider, all in Topeka; five brothers, Kenneth Schneider, Charlotte, N.C., Ralph Schneider, Mound City, Dale Schneider and Jack Schneider, both in Atchison, and Pat Schneider, Rossville; three sisters, Evelyn Bernica, Topeka, Betty Coleman, Valley Falls, and Linda Talley, Morrill; a half-sister, Ellen Allen, Grand Junction, Colo.; a grandson and three granddaughters. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Schneider will lie in state from 2 to 9 n. Wednesday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a parish rosary at 7 p.m. will be followed by a prayer service. A 60-year-old Topeka man was pronounced dead late Sunday at the scene of a one-vehicle accident in Wabaunsee County. Authorities identified the man as Richard Schneider. The accident was reported at 11:57 p.m. Sunday near Interstate 70 and the Snokomo Road exit, said Wabaunsee County Sheriffs Department officials. The accident scene was about 10 miles west of the Shawnee-Wabaunsee county line. Officials said Schneider’s vehicle, which was traveling on a frontage road near the interstate, went through bridge railing and landed on its top in a creek. | |

She was born Aug. 21, 1938, at Oak, Neb., the daughter of Carl and Hazel Comstock Striggow. She grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Nelson High School, Nelson, Neb., in 1956. Jean had lived in the Rossville community since 1977. Mrs. Schott was a bookkeeper and had worked at the Rossville Grain Company and later for the Shawnee Terminal Elevator in Topeka. She was a member of the Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Striggow; and a son-in-law, Philip Taylor. On Oct. 14; 1956, she was united in marriage to Donald Eugene “Gene” Schott at Oak, Neb. He survives of the home. Other survivors include three daughters; Tracey Taylor and Tami Eustice, both of Rossville, and Teresa (Brad) Holmer, Silver Lake; her siblings, Bonnie Colgrove, Salina, Allen Striggow, Lacey, Wash.,Mona Hansen and Shirley Jacobitz, both of Hastings, Neb., June Andelt, Crete, Neb., and Larry Striggow; Superior, Neb.; grandchildren: Chris (Kristin) Eustice, Stephen (Jacy) Taylor, Rachel Taylor, Jenni Holmer and Derek Holmer; great-grandchildren: Anthony, Jordan, Tucker, Trey and Taylynn. Mr. Schraeder was a farmer and stockman. He was born Jan. 17,1909, on a farm near Rossville, the son of Frank and Mary McDonnell Schraeder. He was graduated from Rossville High School and lived on the same farm near Rossville his entire life. Mr. Schraeder was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Delia. He was married to Georgia Keener on Sept. 24,1955, at Gardner. She survives. Other survivors include a brother, James Schraeder, Topeka; and a sister, Elizabeth Baker, Puente, Calif. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Rossville. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery at St. Marys. He was born January 17,1909 on a farm north of Rossville, the son of Frank and Mary McDonnell Schraeder. He lived in the Rossville community all of his life. He was born and grew up and lived oft the same farm all of his life. He was graduated from Rossville High School. He was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Delia. He married Georgia Keener at Gardner on September 24, 1955. She survives. Other survivors are one brother, James Schraeder, Topeka; one sister, Elizabeth Baker, Puente, CA; two nephews and one niece. | 9460 |  | Obituary- Schraeder, Frank Frank Schrader Dies after a long illness Frank Schraeder, 88, of Delia died Friday evening at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka after a long illness. He was born October 8, 1875 in Duduque, Iowa, and came to St. Marys with his parents when he was six years old. The family moved to Delia in 1930. He was married to Mary O’Connell at the Immaculate Conception Church, St. Marys, May 8, 1906. Mrs. Schraeder preceded him in death August 1934. Mr. Schraeder was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Delia. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by three sons, Francis of Rossville, James of 224 Polk St., Topeka, and Stephen of South Bend, Indiana; one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Baker of Los Puenti, Calif.; three grandchildren and one brother, John Schraeder of Frankfort, Ks. The rosary was recited at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys. Requiem Mass was recited at 9:00 a.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Church in Delia. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Rev. George Seuferling officiated. | 9461 |  | Obituary- Schraeder, Hester Hester Schraeder Hester H. Schraeder, 98, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017. Hester was born on October 18,1918, in Kansas City MO. She was reared by Jenny Allen and lived in Willard, with her three brothers and her sister. Hester graduated from Rossville High School in 1937. She worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation, retiring after 30 years of service. She married James Schraeder on January 20,1945. He preceded her in death on January 11,2002. Survivors include her nephews and nieces, Jim Schraeder (Rosie), Lenexa, Hedy Lack (Joe dec.), Palm Harbor FL, Pat Renyer (Dave), Topeka and Ron Schraeder (Jan), Wichita. Hester was also preceded in death by her brothers, Heber, Hamer and Herman and her sister, Helen. Family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614, where the Daughters of Isabella will lead a rosary at 10:15 a.m. Funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Schraeder worked for the Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Affairs Medical Center until he retired in 1979. He served in the Army in the European theater during World War II. He was born July 31, 1919, in Rossville, the son of Frank Schraeder and Mary McDonald Schraeder. He graduated from Rossville High School on 1937 and attended Washburn University and Strickler Business College in Topeka. Mr. Schraeder was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, Topeka North Post No. 400 of the American Legion and he was a life member of Disabled Veterans. He married Hester H. Cameron on Jan. 20, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan. She survives. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. | 9463 |  | Obituary- Schraeder, Margaret Margaret Schraeder Margaret Schraeder, aged 76 years, 5 month and 18 days, died Wednesday, December 22, at 11:57 p.m., at her home four miles north of Rossville. She was born July 4, 1867, in Ontario, Canada. She was a member of the congregation of the Sacred Heart Church of Delia. In 1937, she was married to Frank Schraeder. She was endowed with all the qualities and virtues that stamp a woman a good citizen: devoted to her family, a good neighbor and true friend. She is survived by her husband, Frank Schraeder, of Rossville; three sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Alice Halloran, Miss Katherine Skelly, of Delia; Mrs. Mary Graybill, of Salina; James, Patrick and Thomas Skelly, all of Delia. Funeral services were held Friday morning from the Sacred Heart Church in Delia. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at St. Marys. | 9464 |  | Obituary- Schraeder, Mary SCHRADER [sic Schraeder] Mrs. Frank Schrader, who passed away Thursday, Aug. 30, 1934, after an illness of several weeks, at her home north of Rossville, was born November 30, 1875, near St. Marys, Kansas, being 58 years old at the time of her decease. She was united in marriage to Frank Schrader May 6, 1906. Beside the husband she leaves five children to mourn her departure. They are four sons, Michael, Francis. Stephen and James, and a daughter Elizabeth. Three sisters, Mrs. James Feighney, Atoka, Okla., Mrs. John Reser, Dover and Mrs. Thomas Feighney of Topeka, also survive. She was a hard worker, a good' and faithful mother. Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church at Delia, Saturday, Sept. 1, at 9 o’clock with a solemn high mass by Father Twomey. The pallbearers were George Webner, Joe McNeive, Joe Simecka, Thos. Halloran, John Lane and James Skelly. The out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were: George Schrader and family, of St. Marys; John Schraeder and family, Emmett; Mr. and Mrs. L. Erhart, St. Marys; Kenneth Blanden, Mayetta; Mr. and Mrs. John Reser and family, Dover; Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Feighney, and family, Topeka; Mrs. John Feighney. and daughters Geraldine, and Lavina Johnson, Topeka. She was married to Henry Baker October 12, 1946, in Los Angeles. He died June 19,1967. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in LaPuente. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Ann Goeltz, San Diego, CA; an adopted son, Steve Baker, Tustin, CA; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, James Schraeder, Topeka. Wally was born July 6, 1949, in Colorado, the son of Donald and Clara Ellis Schrempp. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1967. He married Cheryl Oliver in Topeka in 1974. Wally was a general contractor for LF Miller Construction before he started WW Schrempp Construction. He enjoyed collecting old cars and motorcycles, playing golf, and loved fishing with his grandsons. Wally is survived by his wife, Cheryl; son, Randy Schrempp (Kelsey); grandsons, Kason and Kolin; and sister, Mindee Reece. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jerry and John Schrempp. Services are private. Inurnment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. She died Wednesday, April 20, 1994 at a Merriam hospital. She was born June 2, 1903, near Delia, the daughter of Michael and Lucy Fennel Grace. She moved to Overland Park from Topeka in 1978. Mr. Schuler preceded her in death on February 13, 2010. Marzella was a homemaker, but she also assisted her husband Fred in the trucking business. She was a hard working woman. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and the St. Joseph’s Church Alter Society. Marzella was a loving and excellent mother, often doting on her children and grandchildren. She also had a warm spot in her heart for animals. He had worked for Kansas Power and Light and Omaha Power and Light 20 years and in line construction for contractors. He also owned and operated the B & B Cafe in St. Marys from 1966 to 1968; the Gamble Store seven years and since 1991 worked in maintenance for St. Marys Housing Authority and delivered Meals on Wheels. He served in the Merchant Marines in the South Pacific in World War II. He was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Clifton, the son of Lawrence and Cecelia Hesse Schumaker. He had lived in Topeka from 1948 to 1951, in Omaha, Neb., from 1951 to 1965, and since then in St. Marys. Mr. Schumaker was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, the board of directors of St. Marys Senior Center, elected to St. Marys City Commission in 1991 and was serving as mayor. He also was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 555 and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union No. 304, both in Topeka, and Rollers Travel Club in Rossville. He was married to Mary L. Dyer on June 17, 1948, in Holy Name Catholic Church in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include five sons, Donald E. Schumaker, Richard Schumaker and Patrick J. Jim was 79 years old. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, he was the first child of Donna Ruth Conkle and Lloyd Gay Schwartz, M.D. Jim grew up in Topeka where he was known as "the lemon drop kid," the cycling paperboy who always hit your front porch with precision. He set the record for sit-ups at Boswell Jr. High, surpassed only by his little brother, Charlie. Jim graduated Topeka High in 1958 with the nickname "Elvis" because of his pompadour, ducktail and guitar. He played guitar for many traveling musicians appearing at the Topeka Municipal Auditorium in the late 50's and early 60's. Jim received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education at Washburn University in Topeka, majoring in Voice. Although recommended for training in Opera, Jim wanted to play and teach. He taught public school music in Dennison, Jackson Heights and Rossville school districts for 9 years, while playing and singing music professionally in Topeka. He traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada playing in bands ranging from the young 70's duo "Jim & Susie" to a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band who called him "Grandpa," except the lead guitar player who called him Dad. He was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church and enjoyed leisure time with family at his country home in Eureka. Jim was preceded in death by grandson Tavian James Johnson, Wichita; brother Charles Schwartz, Mansfield, Mo. and parents Lloyd and Donna Schwartz, Topeka. James is survived by his wife Susette "Susie" M. The family's neighbors reported Schwerdt was seen about 11 p.m. Saturday in the yard of his home. Randy was a Vietnam veteran who served our country in the US Navy. In 1980 he moved to Phoenix and in 1981, was united in marriage to Pamela Sue Waldo, enjoying over 37 years together. Randy was employed by Sanderson Ford in Glendale, Arizona and by Chapman BMW in Chandler, Arizona, from which he retired. Randy like fast cars and Harleys. He was overly generous helping large numbers of family and friends whenever needed. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. | 9485 |  | Obituary- Scritchfield, Jackson Jackson H. Scritchfield was born in Decatur county, Indiana, June 8, 1842, died Aug. 31, 1915. During his boyhood he and his family moved to Lake county, Indiana, where he lived at the beginning of the Civil War. At the age of 19, he enlisted in B Company, 20th Indiana Infantry, on June 25, 1861, and served until mustered out July 29, 1863. During the war he saw hard service, taking part in the battle of Gettysburg and Spotsylvania. During the battle of the Wilderness he was wounded. On May 3, 1865, he was united in marriage to Miss Addie C. Sherman at Crown Point, Indiana, and in the fall of the same year he and his bride moved to Pottawatomie county, Kansas, where he resided until his death. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Scritchfield, Willard W., Esther D., Ida B., George R., James O., Mary F., Laura L., Charles L., Bertram D., Bertha J. and Delia J., all of whom survive him except Laura and Charles, who died in childhood. "Jack" Scritchfield as his friends named him, was a man of strict integrity and honest to the core. He was a plain unassuming man, a good father and a true friend. Mrs. Nellie Viola Scritchfield, 71, wife of Hiram Scritchfield of Green River, Wyoming, passed away February 2 at the Sweetwater County Memorial hospital where she had been a patient for the previous week. The Scritchfield family lived in Rossville from 1907 to 1917. Mrs. Scritchfield was born July 20, 1887. in Weston, Vt., the daughter of Charles and Finette Fuller Hale. When she was six years old, the family moved to Rossville. She was married to Hiram Scritchfield in Topeka on August 28, 1907. They had been residents if Green River since 1924. She was a member of the Presbyterian church. Survivors include her husband; six sons, Harold, Richard and Floyd of Green River, Barton of Denver, Raymond, of Irwin, Pa., and Leslie of Encinitas, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Gardner of Lompoc, Calif., and Mrs. Joseph Franich of Devil’s Slide, Utah; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Aubert of St. Marys, Kans. and Mrs. Alex Justic of Meriden, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were February 5 at the Congregational church with burial in Riverview cemetery. Her sister, Mrs. Joseph Aubert of St. Marys and a niece, Mrs. Leo Kennedy of Emmett, Kansas, attended the funeral. | |
| 9487 |  | Obituary- Scully, Ellen Ellen Scully Ellen G. Scully, 93, Silver Lake, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the St. Marys Manor. She was born September 21, 1908, in Belvue, to George W. and Ella May Ewing Ackley. She had lived in Silver Lake for 63 years. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle No. 503 in Topeka, the Silver Lake Community Club, and several bridge clubs. She was a charter member of Silver Lake Senior Citizens and a member of the group’s XYZ Club. On July 7, 1930, she married Jerome Scully in Wamego. He died May 7, 1981. Nephews and nieces survive. Her funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka. A parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 North Kansas, Topeka 66608. | 9488 |  | Obituary- Seager, George A Fatal Accident – July 1898 Last Saturday morning about 11 o’clock, an accident occurred which fatally injured one man and disabled another. Messrs Henry Ford, jr., Robt. McGuire, James McGuire and George Seager were returning from St. Marys in a spring wagon, driven by Henry Ford. When they arrived at Richstatters crossing, 1 ½ miles this side of St. Marys, a halter was found lying in the road. They stopped to pick it up, and while doing so the horses gave a sudden jump forward, causing the occupants of the back seat – James McGuire and George Seager – to fall backwards out of the wagon. They struck the ground upon their heads and shoulders, causing partial unconsciousness and disability. The other men rushed to their assistance, and, finding that they were badly hurt, a messenger was despatched for Dr. Miller, of St. Marys. Upon examination it was found that Seager was very badly injured, and it was not advisable to move him immediately, so he was not taken home until late in the afternoon. Dr. Pratt was summoned after he arrived home and Pratt and Miller held a consultation at the house Sunday morning. All was done that human power could devise, but he kept sinking until Tuesday evening, when death relieved him from all suffering. The accident was one of the saddest that has occurred here for a number of years, and the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved ones. Obituary George W. Seager was born in Perry County, Pennsylvania, on January 8, 1859, and died in Rossville, Kas., on Tuesday, July 26, 1898, aged 29 years, 6 months and 18 days. Deceased leaves a mother and sister in Harrisburg, Penn., and a wife and two children at Rossville, Kas., who mourn his sudden and untimely death. George Seager was married to Miss Ellie Osborn, Sept. 11, 1894. Five children blessed their union, three of which have passed to the bright beyond. He united with the Baptist church about eighteen months ago, and always lived up to his religion. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church on Thursday, July 28, 1898, under the auspices of the A.O.U.W. of which he was a member, and the remains were interred in the Rossville cemetery. The sermon was preached by Rev. J. G. Mayer, assisted by Rev. J. S. Caruthers, Rev. J. F. Youngman and Rev. R. Humes, of Silver Lake. Rev. Mayer’s text was taken from John, 21;23: “One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.” The church was filled to its utmost capacity and a large number were unable to gain admittance. The death of George W. Seager casts a shadow over this community which only time can efface. Always pleasant, honest and obliging his love for home, and the trust in his God, made him a peer in the hearts of his friends. The family is prostrated with grief, and we join with the entire community in extending to them our deepest sympathy in this, their great affliction. (Headstone says DOB 05-18-1858) | |

He was born January 22,1928 near Paxico, KS, the son of Roy W. and Emma Ruth Trostle Searcy. He graduated from Rossville High School in 1945 and joined the Navy in June. He was a Sea-Bee in the US Navy from 1945-1946. After leaving the Navy, he married Elberta Viergever, who preceded him in death in 2008, and worked at Goodyear until moving to Wichita, KS where he began working for KG&E. Carl and his wife were known for working with the Methodist youth group in Valley Center, KS for many years. After retiring Carl and his wife returned to Topeka, KS to be closer to family. Carl enjoyed watching KU sports and vacationing in Colorado with his family. Together, they had two children; a son, Carl Dean Searcy who preceded him in death in 1972, and a daughter, Cynthia of Willard, KS. Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia S. Miller; three granddaughters, Tonya Miller, Olathe, KS, Tishelle Miller, Los Angeles, CA; Tianna Miller and her children, Noah and Marlee Spencer of Lenexa, KS, as well as his brothers, Ray and Edward Searcy and sister, Pearl Wood and their families. One brother, Glenn Searcy, and six sisters, Thelma Stoneberger, Lucille Hosier, Dorothy Wright, Golda Plumly, Eileen Creveling, and Mary* Miller preceded him in death. Mrs. Searcy worked for Southwestern Bell for 33 years in the Topeka and Wichita offices. After retiring from Southwestern Bell, she worked for five years as a clerk at McClain's Amoco Station in Rossville. She was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church. She married Carl R. Searcy on August 20, 1946. They had two children, a son Carl Dean Searcy who preceded her in death in 1972, and a daughter Cynthia. Survivors are her husband Carl of the home, a daughter, Cynthia S. Miller and husband John Lavin of Garland, TX; three granddaughters, Tonya Miller, Olathe, Tishelle Miller, Burbank, CA. and Tianna Spencer and husband Rashid Spencer and their children Noah Spencer and Marlee Spencer of Olathe. Ray was born March 11,1937 in Rossville, Kansas the son of Roy and Emma Trostle Searcy. He grew up in rural Rossville graduating from Rossville High School in 1955. Ray served in the U. S. Air Force for four years. He married Nova June Rutledge July 17,1960 in Valley Center, Kansas. Ray worked as a city bus driver for the City of Topeka. He was a longtime member of the Oakland United Methodist Church. He volunteered with various organizations such as the Oakland Boy Scout troop and enjoyed prison ministry. He had previously worked as a bulk milk driver for Meadow Gold and drove a bus for Seaman School District #345. Ray at one time held a private pilot license. Ray was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Megan Skinner; brothers, Carl and Glenn Searcy and sisters, Thelma Stoneburger, Lucille Hosier, Dorothy Wright, Golda Plumly, Eileen Crevling and Mary Miller. He is survived by his wife Nova of over 57 years; a daughter, Trudy (Kurt) Skinner of Colorado Springs, CO; a son, Troy (Janice) Searcy of Rossville; a brother, Edward Searcy of Topeka; a sister, Pearl Wood of Kentucky and two grandchildren, Andrew and Grace Skinner. Sears and 5 children; Christopher (Nashville, TN), Andrew (Betsy) (Overland Park, KS), Kathryn Roberts (Mike) (Lake Lotawana, MO), Rebecca Drumheller (Jay) (Danville, PA), and William (Angie)(Frisco, TX); 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 3 step-children, 9 step-grandchildren, and 7 step great-grandchildren. His first wife, Joan Waters Sears, his parents, and his sister died previously. Don was educated in public schools, Haverford College, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the Menninger Foundation. He was ordained by the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1954 in PA, served as USN chaplain with USMC air units, with Japanese young men and women ministering with G.I.'s in Japan, then with Presbyterian Churches in Rossville and Delia, KS as well as Blue Springs and Grandview, MO. Johnson County Sr. Nutrition Program employed Don over 10 years. Volunteering at American Stroke Foundation and Heartland Presbyterian Center were enduring joys. Collegial ministry in the local Heartland Presbytery led to appreciation for stimulating friendships. A relative warned him not to be a "man of measured merriment". Sears, of the home; three sons, Christopher John Sears, Acton, Mass., Andrew Frank Sears, Chicago, Ill., and William Isaac Sears of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Roberts, Blue Springs, and Miss Rebecca Sears of the home; her mother, Mrs. Frances Waters, Blue Springs; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Avery, Alexandria, Va., and Mrs. Gail Allen, West Middlesex, Pa.; and a granddaughter.
