| 9851 |  | Obituary- Sorden, Charles 2 Charles W. Sorden Charles W. Sorden, 77, Rossville, died Sunday, November 6, 1994, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Sorden owned and operated Skelly Service Station in Lee’s Summit, MO, for 18 years. He later was a mechanic at Virgil’s Automotive Repair in Lee’s Summit, MO, until he retired in 1980. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was born April 9, 1917, in Campion, CO, the son of Walter and Fawn Deer Sorden. He moved to Rossville in the late spring of 1994. Mr. Sorden was a member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lee’s Summit, MO. He was marred to Henrietta Hinkle on November 13, 1945. She died in July, 1980. Survivors include two sisters, Flora Stwalley, Topeka, and Phyllis Miller, Rossville; and several nieces and nephews. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Langsford-Cox Chapel in Lee’s Summit, MO. Burial was in Floral Hills East Cemetery in Lee’s Summit. | |
| 9852 |  | Obituary- Sorden, Charles P. Charles P. “Chuck” Sorden Charles Patrick “Chuck” Sorden, 50, of Delia, passed away Sunday, August 30,2015. He was born February 20,1965 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Billy Charles and Willa Jean (Stephens) Sorden. He was a 1983 graduate of Seaman High School. Chuck managed the Eastboro NAPA, was a truck driver for Coors Distribution, and most recently drove for Frito-Lay for over 20 years, and had just received his 2 million mild accident free, safe driving award. Chuck married Amy M. Luthi on May 22, 1992 in Golden, CO. She survives. Other survivors include two children, Riley L. Sorden, and Emily M. Sorden of Topeka; a brother, Mike S. Sorden, Topeka; a brother-in-law, Rick Turley, Smithville, MO; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Billie Jean Turley in 2009. Chuck enjoyed cooking, specifically BBQ, camping and fishing. He demonstrated strong mechanical abilities, especially in the automotive area. He also enjoyed raising cattle. A celebration of life ceremony will be 2 p.m., Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. | 9853 |  | Obituary- Spacek, Herman Herman Spacek WAKARUSA — Herman Spacek, 65, Wakarusa, died Thursday, May 6,1999, at his home. Mr. Spacek worked for Goodyear Rubber and Tire Go. for 16 years. He also had taught at B&B High School in Baileyville and farmed southwest of Centralia. He served as a signalman in the Navy aboard the USS Pivot. He was born March 11,1934, in Emmett, the son of Philip Sr. and Edna Henderson Spacek. He graduated from Wamego High School and Kansas State Teachers College. Mr. Spacek restored and collected antique cars. He was a life member of the Horseless' Carriage Club of America and various antique car dubs. He also was a member of the Wakarusa Presbyterian Church. He was married to June Owens on Dec. 21, 1952, in Centralia. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Candice Stallbaumer, Topeka; two sons, Douglas Spacek and Lewis Spacek, both of Topeka; two sisters, Cora Koch, Fairview, and Frances Kelly, Grand Island, Neb.; and three grandchildren. Mr. Spacek was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. May 16 in Wakarusa Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Alpha Christian Children's School and Home and sent in care of Vermillion State Bank in Vermillion. | 9854 |  | Obituary- Spears, Edna 1 Edna Spears ROSSVILLE — Edna I. Spears, 93, Rossville, died Friday, Aug. 9,2002, at a Topeka retirement home. Mrs. Spears had been a clerk for the Kansas House of Representatives. She was born Aug. 11,1908, in Wamego, the daughter of Arthur and Gertrude Banks Vilven. She was reared in Wamego and graduated from Wamego High School. She moved to Rossville in 1928. Mrs. Spears was the oldest member of Rossville United Methodist Church. She was past president of United Methodist Women at the church. She was a 61 -year member of Loyal Chapter No. 176 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Silver Lake, past worthy matron and district aide. She was president of Legislative Wives Association in Topeka in 1971 and 1972, president of Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas in 1969, past president of the Rossville Ladies Literary and Music Circle and a 60-year member of a Rossville bridge club. She married LaVerne H. Spears on Dec. 3, 1927, in Seneca. He died on Dec. 15,1991. Mrs, Spears also was preceded in death by a grandson, Earl Queen, in 1967. Survivors include two daughters, Helen L. Miller, Topeka, and Ruth E. Larson, Rossville; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Chapter No. 176 of the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a Star Service. Burial will be at Rossville Cemetery. Mrs. Spears will lie in state at the Piper Funeral Chapel in Rossville after 2 p.m. today. She grew up in the Wamego community and was graduated from Wamego High School. She attended Kansas State Agricultural College in Manhattan. She had served as the church treasurer for many years, and was a member of the United Methodist Women and served as president in 1976. She was a 61-year member of Loyal Chapter No. 176 Order of the Eastern Star, Silver Lake. She had served as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star for four years and as a District Aide for the Eastern Star. She served as president of Legislative Wives Association in Topeka in 1971-1972. She was president of Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas in 1969. She was a member and past president of the Rossville Ladies Literary and Music Circle. She had been a member of a local Bridge Club for over 60 years. She supported her husband in all of his activities. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout Europe, South America, twice around the world, Oriental countries, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, China, and Hawaii. She and her husband wintered in Sun City, AZ for many years and she continued to do so after his death until recent years. On December 3, 1927, she married LaVerne H. Spears at Seneca. He died December 15, 1991. A grandson, Earl Queen, died in 1967. Survivors include two daughters, Helen L. Miller, Topeka, and Ruth E. Larson, Rossville; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Her service was at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Rossville United Methodist Church where Loyal Chapter No. 176 Order of the Eastern Star conducted a Star memorial service. Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery. Family visitation was held at Piper Funeral Chapel, Rossville, from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. He served as mayor of Rossville 10 years and two terms as president of the Kansas League of Municipalities. In 1964, he was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives and served 10 years. He owned and operated a grain and livestock farm near Rossville, was a general agent for Kansas Farm Bureau Insurance 32 years and had been a partner in Massey-Ferguson Farm Implement dealership in Rossville. He had owned the Gamble Store in Wamego and had been manager of the International-Harvester dealership in Valley Falls. He was born Sept. 20, 1906, in Louisville, the son of Herbert and Flora Obera Laughlin Spears. He was graduated from Wamego High School in 1924 and from Kansas State College in Manhattan in 1936. He moved to Rossville in 1928. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rossville and an affiliate member of Willowbrook United Methodist Church in Sun City, Ariz. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge more than 50 years and a current member of Lake Lodge No. 50, AF&AM, in Silver Lake. He was master of the former Hesperian Lodge No. 111, AF&AM, in Rossville in 1944. He was a member of Scottish Rite consistory and Arab Shrine, both in Topeka. He was a member of Loyal Chapter No. 176, Order of Eastern Star, in Silver Lake and had been worthy patron of the former Amaryllis Chapter No. 321, Order of Eastern Star, in Rossville eight times. He was elected worthy grand patron of the Kansas Grand Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and served on the Necrology Committee of General Grand Chapter from 1970 to 1973. He was a member of the Lions Club in Rossville and Bell Lions Club in Sun City, Ariz., where he served as president in 1990. He was a charter member of the board of Cross Creek Watershed District No. 42 and had been treasurer 35 years. He was married to Edna Iona Vilven Dec. 3, 1927, in Seneca. She survives. A grandson, Earl Queen, preceded him in death. Other survivors include two daughters, Helen L. Cook and Ruth E. Larson, both of Rossville; five grand¬children and seven great-grandchildren. | 9860 |  | Obituary- Spetter, Charles Charles Spetter Mont. — Memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Drummond, Mont., for Charles Spetter, 65, Hall, formerly of Topeka. He died Thursday, March 7, at a Helena hospital. Mr. Spetter owned and operated a radio and television repair shop. He was born Sept. 17, 1919, at Clovis, N.M., the son of Otis and Sophea Polenek Spetter. He moved with his parents to Topeka at an early age and lived in Topeka almost 20 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U S. Marine Corps on Iwo Jima. He moved to Butte, Mont., after his discharge. His wife, Mrs. Dorothy Palmer Spetter, died in 1954. Survivors include a brother, Eugene Spetter, Delia; and three sisters, Sister Viola Prue, Paxico, Sister Mathilda Spetter, Yucaipa, Calif., and Gertrude Spetter, Pharr, Texas. | 9861 |  | Obituary- Spetter, Eugene EUGENE N. Eugene N. Spetter, 92, Delia, passed away Friday, December 29, 2017, at the St. Mary’s Health Center. Eugene was born March 3,1925, at home on a dairy farm on the outskirts of Topeka, Ks., the son of Otis and Sophe Polenek Spetter. Eugene married Nellie Dain at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church on May 1,1950. She preceded him in death on October 13, 2007. Eugene retired from Ed Marlings as a TV technician in 1988. He dearly loved the game of golf and played his last game at the age of 89. He was very proud of the fact he made a total of 5 holes in one! Eugene is survived by his children, Judy (Verlon) Cress, Sarah (Mike Richmond) Bahner, Cecil (Anna) Spetter, Ramna Cookie (Dan) Kochaniec, Patti (Richard) Jordan & Leo Same Spetter, 26 Grandkids, 46 Great- SPETTER Grandkids, & 8 Great- Great-Grandkids. He was predeceased by his parents, 4 brothers, 4 sisters and 2 grandsons, Sean Donnelly & John Kochaniec. Eugene was cremated. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, Friday, January 5, 2018, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka, Ks. The funeral service will begin at Noon. She was born Oct. 19, 1930, in Osawatomie, the daughter of Cecil and Laura Adams-Dain. Nellie grew up in Beagle. She married Nicholas Eugene Spetter on May 1, 1950, at Most Pure Heart Catholic Church in Topeka. He survives. Mrs. Spetter was a homemaker and had graduated from the Menninger Bible Study Group. She enjoyed woodworking, sewing and baking, and she especially liked taking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren fishing. She was known to all in Delia as Grandma Spetter. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Eugene; four daughters, Judy Cress of Delia, Sarah Bahner of Columbus, Ohio, Cookie Kochaniec of Parrish, Fla., and Patricia Jordan of Peculiar, Mo.; two sons, Cecil Spetter of Delia and Sam Spetter of Holton. She is also survived by one brother, Wesley Dain of Silver Lake, 25 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Virginia Jackson and Ruth Hippensteel, her brothers, Don and Bill Dain, and two grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Oct. 19 at Penwell- Gabel Parker-Price Chapel. She was born November 10, 1967 at Topeka to Lloyd and Patricia (Olejnik) Tomson. She graduated from Rossville High School in 1986 and went on to attend and graduate from Washburn University. Christi married Michael K. Spielman on September 25, 1994 at Sacred Heart in Delia, Kansas. They raised 3 children, Benjamin, Brandon and Katelyn (Katie). Christi was employed at Fork in the Road, Riley, Kansas. She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Clay Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Spielman. She is survived by her family, sons, Benjamin Spielman and Brandon Spielman, Manhattan, and daughter, Katie Spielman, Clay Center; her parents, Lloyd and Patricia Tomson, Rossville; a brother, Craig (JoAnn) Tomson, Wichita; a sister, Jill (Marc) Carver, Topeka; a sister-in-law Kerri Spielman, Clay Center; in-laws, Norval and Linda Spielman, Manhattan; nephews Zayden Tomson; Tyler, Garrett and Jacob Carver; Jordan, Justin, Jonathan and Jason Entgelmeier; and so many more family members and wonderful friends. Janice was born May 1, 1943, in Beloit, Kansas, to Alvin and Rose (Simmons) Colson. She grew up in the Iona Kansas area and attended Rossville High School where she graduated in 1961. She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Lonnie and her son, Timothy “Scott” and daughter-in-law June Spiker of Silver Lake. Janice leaves behind a brother, Dennis (wife Kathy) Colson of Ponder, TX and her grandchildren Codi Spiker of Kansas City, MO, Chelsey (husband Tyler) Boxberger of Olathe and Corey of Silver Lake, sister in-laws, Judy Seitz, Topeka, KS Jackie Colson, Idaho, Traci Parkin of Nevada. Other survivors include numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Janice was proceeded in death by her parents Alvin and Rose Colson and siblings, Bill Colson and Dean Colson. Janice was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, she very seldom missed her grandchildren’s school functions and sporting events. Janice was employed at Goodyear for 37 years. She was a Creative Memories consultant for several years, she always loved crafting. She also belonged to the Red Hat society. She and Lonnie were very active in the Arab Shrine community. | 9866 |  | Obituary- Spotts, Charles Charles Daniel Spotts Charles D. Spotts, aged 64, died last Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. Lockenour, near Menoken, after a brief illness. The funeral was held yesterday from the Conwell Chapel in North Topeka and the body brought to Rossville cemetery. The Spotts family formerly lived here on the farm now owned by Mrs. J.M. Parr, leaving hear about fifteen years ago. The son Clifford, who died in France was buried here several months ago. | |
| 9867 |  | Obituary- Spotts, Clifford Rest At Home The body of Pvt. Clifford Chase Spotts, 30, who was killed in action in France July 21, 1918, arrived in Topeka Wednesday. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow (Friday) afternoon from the Presbyterian church here. Burial will be in Rossville cemetery. The ceremonies will be conducted by his comrades of the Rossville Legion Post. Private Spotts was inducted into service September 19, 1917. At that time he was working for his father on a farm southeast of Tecumseh. He was made a member of Co. D, 353rd infantry at Camp Funston. He was transferred to Camp Pike November 12, where he became a member of Battery F, 334th field artillery. He went overseas in April, 1918. While overseas he was a member of Battery B 6th field artillery. He was a driver of an ammunition wagon and it was while returning from the front for another load of ammunition that he and his team was killed by a shell. Spotts was buried in the Commune of Missey-Aux Bois, Aisne, France. He is survived by his father, C.D. Spotts, who lives near Tecumseh and a sister, Mrs. Luther Lockenour, of Menoken. HIs mother was buried here last July. He was born in Friend, Nebr., Feb. 18, 1988. He came to Shawnee County with his father when a boy. The family resided here for several years. | |

Springer, 96, Delia who died Tuesday night in a Topeka hospital where he was admitted Nov. 8. He was born Nov. 8, 1879, in Brown County and spent most of his life in the Delia community. He was a member of the former Adrian United Brethren Church north of Delia. He was a farmer. He was married to Lora Richardson on Aug. 20,1899. She died April 23,1964. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Herma Stauffer, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Mrs. Sylvia McGue, 3700 Wilder Road; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Dressier, Belleville; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Delia Cemetery. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Verschelden Funeral Home at St Marys. ERNEST H. SPRINGER Ernest H. Springer, 96, Delia, died Tuesday, December 9, 1975 at a Topeka hospital where he was admitted on November 8. He was born November 8, 1879 in Brown County, Kansas, and lived most of his life in the Delia area. As a youth, he was baptized in the former Adrian United Brethren Church north of Delia. Mr. Springer was a farmer until his retirement. On August 20, 1899 he married Lora Richardson. She died in 1967. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Herma Stauffer, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Mrs. Sylvia McGue, Topeka; one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Dressier, Belleville, Ks.; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. | 9871 |  | Obituary- St. Auben, Louis TRACTOR ACCIDENT Louis St. Aubin 65, of St. Marys was employed on the Mulvane ranch and while helping Tuesday to fill a silo was seriously injured. He was driving a tractor packing a trench silo when the accident occurred. He was pinned under the machine when it overturned on him. One ear and one thumb were nearly severed; He was rushed to St. Francis hospital for treatment. It has not been learned just how serious his condition is. LOUIS ST. AUBEN Louis St. Auben, a 55-year resident of St. Marys, died at the age 65 in St. Francis, hospital, Topeka, Oct 7, the victim of a tractor accident on the Mulvane ranch in Sandy Hook, southeast of town. The tractor he was driving Sept. 26 overturned, pinning him beneath. The funeral was held here Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church Interment was in Valley View cemetery. Rev C. S. Wogan, pastor officiated. The pallbearers were Alien Engler, operator of the Mulvane ranch Francis Davis foreman; Wayne Salisbury, Phil Meyer, Henry DeWendt and Leo Martell. Lou St. Auben was born in Clyde, Kansas, Aug. 15, 1885, the son of Max St. Auben and Madelene Bashow, natives of France. In his lifetime he was a farmer, teamster and railroad employee, living in recent years on Palmer street. He was married to Nellie Blanka at Manhattan on August 23, 1930. He leaves his widow on; daughter, Mrs. Marcella Hay of Long Beach, California; one son. Mr. St. Louis was born in Topeka on May 16, 1920, the son of Emil and Margaret (Grieves) St. Louis. He was a 1939 graduate of Topeka High School. Mr. St. Louis proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served in the South Pacific with the 9th Pursuit Squadron until May 1945. During his service in World War II, he earned a Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge with bronze oak leaf cluster, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star. Mr. St. Louis was employed by the U.S. Postal Service retiring in 1985 after 23 years of service. Mr. St. Louis married W. Eileen (Patton) Lemon on February 2, 1968. She survives at the home. Other survivors include his sons, Charles L. St. Louis, Jr, Ewa Beach, HI; James Lemon, El Dorado, AR; Joel Robert Lemon and Jerrol O. | 9877 |  | Obituary- Stach, Anna Mrs. Stach Died in Kansas City Mrs. Anna Stach, widow of John Stach, a resident of Jackson county since 1808, died Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the home of her son Louis Stach in Argentine, Kansas. Mrs. Stach had been an invalid for the past five years. During the last month she was unconscious except at intervals. The deceased was a native of Czeche-Slovakia, where she was born January 6, 1838, at Cichov, Moravia. She came to America in 1861, locating near Newman, Kansas. She was united in marriage to John Stach shortly after her arrival at Leavenworth, Kan. In 1868 the family moved to Jackson county where Mrs. Stach remained until 1917, she went to live with her son Louis in Argentine. At the time of her death she was aged 88 years, 3 months and 26 days. The body was brought to Rossville this morning and the funeral held in the Presbyterian church at 1 p.m. conducted by Rev. Pouker, a Lutheran minister from Kansas City. Interment was made in the family lot in Rossville cemetery. The accident occurred five miles north of Rossville. Dead are Benjamin M. Stach, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Stach, and Donald R. Frederick, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Frederick, Rossville. Bennie was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, while the Frederick youth died Satur¬day in a Topeka hospital. The car left the blacktop road and plunged into a ditch. There was a heavy fog at the time. It was reported there were no skid marks, and it appeared the car left the highway gradually. Funeral services for Bennie were held Monday at the Ross-ville Presbyterian Church with interment in the Moravian Cem-etery. The funeral Mass for Donald was celebrated Tuesday morn¬ing at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Delia, with interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Bennie Stach, a senior at Rossville High School, was born March 13, 1949. Bennie was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church. He also was a member of the ZCBJ Lodge No. 128 where he was serving as president and had served in that office for over 36 years. Mr. Stach was the treasurer of the Czech Moravan Cemetery. He and his wife Arlis, along with Bill and Tina Olejnik, were caretakers of the cemetery for many years. Bennie was an honorary member of the FFA. Mr. Stach was preceded in death by two brothers, August and Frank. He also was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin, on Nov. 4, 1966. On Aug. 16, 1944, he was united in marriage to Arlis Hundertfund at Lawrence. She survives of the home. She is also survived by her husband, Frank Stach of Rossville and two brothers, Thomas Smatla of Silver Lake, Kansas and Paul Smatla of Moravia, Czechoslovakia. She also leaves 4 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors and friends. She was a member of the Czech Presbyterian church located south of Delia, Kansas. Stach was killed when the farm tractor he was driving on an incline overturned on top of him, said Sher¬iff’s Capt. Rick Hladky. Authorities were called at about 6:30 p.m. to the scene where the acci¬dent occurred — a field about five miles north of Rossville, in the 8800 block of N.W. Carlson Road. It wasn’t known how long Stach had been underneath the tractor before rescue crews arrived. Rossville Fire Department Chief Wilbur Stum Jr. said Stach was declared dead at the scene. Stach lived in Rossville but owned the property where the accident occurred, authorities said. | 9900 |  | Obituary- Stackhouse, Frank FRANK STACKHOUSE KILLED Former Rossville Boy Victim of Boiler Explosion in the Oklahoma City Oil Field. (Shawnee, Okla., Morning News) Frank Stackhouse of 223 North Union Street, Shawnee, was killed and two Oklahoma City men injured in a boiler explosion in the Oklahoma City oil field last night (Thursday, Oct. 31.) Stackhouse was an employee of the B. and A. Drilling company and was working between two boilers on a lease west of the I. T. I. O. plant when the explosion occurred. Geo McNevens and Frank Brumley, both of Oklahoma City, were injured, although not seriously. Stackhouse was thrown against the second boiler by the explosion and scalded severely by the escaping steam. It is thought he died almost instantly. The explosion occurred about 9 o’clock last night. Celestine Stackhouse, a daughter, was notified of the accident while partaking in Hallowe’en merry-making here last night and left immediately for Oklahoma City with her mother. Stackhouse’s body was taken to the Watts and McAtee Funeral home in Oklahoma City. |
