    Allen and Leanna Carter, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary as guests of honor at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. July 14 at Central United Methodist Church at 1501 Massachusetts, Lawrence.

    Hosts will be their children, Diana and Don Owens and Christine and Edward McKelvey, all of Lawrence; Mrs. Carter’s mother, Lydia Strimple, Rossville Mrs. Carter’s brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Maxine Strimple, Kansas City, Kan.; and family friend Jane Barthurst, Richmond, Va.

    The couple has one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

    Allen C. Carter and Leanna Strimple were married July 14, 1946, in the chapel at Winter General Hospital in Topeka with the Rev. Robert A. Preston, chaplain, officiating.

    Mrs. Carter served in Africa and Europe with the 87th Division, 346th Infantry, of the U.S. Army during World War II. He retire4d from the University of Kansas as a power house engineer and also had worked as a power house engineer at Topeka State Hospital and Kansas Neurological Institute.

    Mrs. Carter worked for Santa Fe Railway in Topeka and Lawrence. She retired in 1987 after 40 years of service.

    LAWRENCE — Services have been rescheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church in Lawrence for Christine Marie McKelvey, 47, Lawrence, who died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at a Lawrence hospital. She was disabled all her life.

    She was born Dec. 30,1954, in Topeka, to Allen and Leanna Strimple Carter, and had lived in Topeka since 1963.

    She was a member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Lawrence and had done volunteer work.

    She married Edward LeRoy McKelvey on June 30,1978, in Lawrence. He died Feb. 9,1998.

    Survivors include her mother, Leanna Carter, Lawrence; two sisters, Diane Owens, Eudora, and Jane Barthurst, Montpelier, Va.; and a grandmother, Lydia Strimple, Rossville.

    Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rossville Cemetery. Mrs. McKelvey will lie in state until 9 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, National Kidney Foundation or Central United Methodist Church in Lawrence.

    Christine McKelvey
    Christine Marie McKelvey, 47, Lawrence, died Saturday, January 12, 2002, at a Lawrence hospital. She had been ill for several years.

    She was born December 30, 1954, in Topeka, the daughter of Allen and Leanna Strimple Carter, and had lived in Lawrence since 1963. She was disabled all her life and had done volunteer work.

    She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

    On June 30, 1978, she married Edward LeRoy McKelvey in Lawrence. He died February 9, 1998.

    Survivors include her mother, Leanna Carter, Lawrence; two sisters, Diane Owens, Eudora, and Jane Barthurst, Montpelier, VA; and a grandmother, Lydia Strimple, Rossville.

    Her service will be at 11 a.m Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be in the Rossville Cemetery in Rossville. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (this evening).

    Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation, and sent in care of the mortuary.
