    Passed the Century Mark

Mrs. Elma Binns now of Topeka celebrated her 100th birthday anniversary, Wednesday August 18, an event her many friends were happy to share in. Grandma Binns was born August 18, 1837, and was married Oct. 28, 1855, to Richard Binns. They moved to Topeka in February 1870 and later moved to Rossville where her husband died in 1918. To this union were born six children, Will, Anna, Mary, Horace, Frank, and Bert. There are six grandchildren living, Mrs. Mabel Eversole, Rossville; Mrs. Grace Garrett, of Largo, Fla.; Mrs. Nellie Retter of Topeka; Mrs. Ethel Christian of Santa Ana, Calif., and Mrs. Ruth Smiley Durban and Ray Smiley of Ohio; eight great grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Binns is the first to celebrate a 100th birthday anniversary at the Home.

A niece living in Cincinnati had a dedication over W.L.W. for her grandmother, which was heard by members of the Home.

More than 100 friends and relatives of Mrs. Binns, attended the reception honoring her at the Kansas Methodist Home for the Aged in Topeka.

From 3 until 4 o'clock in the afternoon, the guests exchanged friendly greetings and "best wishes for another 100 years" with Mrs. Binns who lived in Rossville until eight years ago when she went to the Home in Topeka.

Among relatives from out of town were Mrs. Grace Garrett of Largo, Fla., and Mrs. Mabel Eversole of Rossville, granddaughters; Patty Lee Eversole and Frances Eversole of Rossville, great-granddaughters; Mary White Maynard, teacher at the American University in Beirut, Syria a cousin, and Mrs. Frank Binns, of Rossville, a daughter-in-law. Mrs. Caroline Hill White of Topeka, a cousin also was present.

Out-of-town guests included Mrs. [ ].P. Sleeper of Kansas City, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Brown of Wichita. Mrs. Margaret Hill McCarter, noted Topeka author, was among those who paid their respects to Mrs. Binns.

The reception was planned and carried out under the diretion of Mrs. C.L. Hovgard.

The Jordan Baking Co., baked and presented a huge birthday cake to Mrs. Binns.

    Nearing Her 100th Year

Grandma Elma Binns, at the Methodist Home in Topeka, will celebrate her 99th birthday anniversary Tuesday, August 18th, and no doubt would appreciate greetings from her Rossville friends. She is confined to her bed just now as the result of a recent fall we regret to learn.

Mrs. Elma Binns who makes her home at the Methodist Home in Topeka, celebrated her 99th birthday anniversary, Tuesday, August 18th. During the afternoon a reception was held in her honor. Friends who called to congratulate her were served with lemonade and birthday cake. Although Mrs. Binns had been confined to her bed she was able to be up and enjoyed the day. Many thoughtful friends remembered her with cards and letters and although she could not read them herself, she recalled all of their names and of some, she mentioned little incidents which had occurred while she was still living in her home at Rossville. One highlight of her day was from a cameraman on the Daily Capital staff who took her picture, together with two of her callers who also were over ninety years of age. The picture appeared in the Daily Capital Wednesday morning and was a splendid picture of Mrs. Binns.
