    Wedding vows were exchanged by Elizabeth Ann Howard Smith, Lawrence, and Edward Smatla, Silver Lake, January 30 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Howard of Topeka.

    The brother of the bridegroom Rev. Thomas Smatla, of Butte, Montana officiated at the double ring ceremony.

    Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Howard, Lawrence, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smatla, Sr. of Silver Lake.

    The bride wore a streetlength sheath of pale beige satine trimmed with beige lace. A velvet bow held her short veil. She carried a white orchid with carnations and hyacinths.

    Mrs. Kathleen Howard and another brother of the bridegroom, William Smatla, Silver Lake, attended the couple. Debra Smith, daughter of the bride, lighted the candles.

    The couple is at home on a farm near Silver Lake.

    Elizabeth Howard Smatla
    Elizabeth Ann Howard Smatla was born Oct. 19, 1921 at Fort Scott the daughter of Nelson E. and Bessie (Cleland) Howard. She attended school at Pleasanton, KS, Fort Scott Junior College, and received a B.S. degree at the University of Kansas.

    Elizabeth married Ralph Smith in 1944, and their daughter, Debra, was born of this union. After moving to Lawrence she married Edward Smatla in 1970; they resided on their farm near Rossville in the Grove Community.

    Elizabeth was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church and the Literary Club of Rossville. She was a charter member of Chapter HX of the P.E.O. Sisterhood at Rossville.

    She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Butler, and her parents.

    She will be greatly missed by her husband, Ed Smatla of the home, Silver Lake; her daughter, Debra and her husband, Bill Like, of Loogootee, IN; her brother, Chuck Howard of Topeka; and many other family members and friends.

    Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thurs., June 23, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, North Topeka. Interment will be in the Czech-Moravian Cemetery. Elizabeth will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.
