    Maxine Waneta Metzger Lyda
    ROSSVILLE - Maxine Waneta Metzger Lyda, 83, of Rossville, formally of Alma, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Rossville Valley Manor in Rossville. She was born May 14, 192,1 in southern Wabaunsee County, on the Aye Ranch, the daughter of Lawrence E. and Edith Conwell Stellwagen. She was a hairdresser, owning several shops in Alma, Manhattan, and Topeka. After leaving Kansas she moved to South Padre Island, Texas, and worked there with the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce. She then moved to Cocoa, Fla., where she worked again as a hairdresser and as a CNA caring for clients in their homes until her retirement. She returned to Kansas in 2001. She enjoyed working in her yard, horses, square dancing, sewing and travel. She married Arthur Metzger on Sept. 9, 1939, in Alma. He preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1961. Survivors include two sons, Joe Metzger, and his wife, Heidi, Buras, La., and Michael Lyda, address unknown; a daughter, Sally Lesline, and her husband, Jim, Wamego; a brother, L.E. Stellwagen, Perry; a sister, Hester Cameron, Salina; two sister-in-laws, Ann Geiser, McFarland and Lola Sommer, Riverside, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Deraid Metzger, and an infant daughter. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland. The Rev. Jeffrey Geske will be officiating. Burial will follow at St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery in Alma. Mrs. Lyda will lie in state starting at 3 p.m., today at Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home in Alma, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. They suggest memorials to the Association for Fontotemporal Dementias or the Rossville Valley Manor and those may be sent in care of the Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home.
