    Willa M. Steele
    St. Marys- Willa M. Steele, 97, passed away Friday, April 29,2011 at her home in St. Marys.

    She was born June 20, 1913 at Lynch, NE. the daughter of the late Clarence "Bert" and Nettie Huse Wilson. Mrs. Steele graduated from St. Marys High School.

    Willa was a homemaker. She worked for Miller's Department Store in St. Marys for many years and had been a waitress at the Knights of Columbus Club, and several other restaurants in St. Marys and Rossville. She also had worked at the Rezac Sale Barn. Mrs. Steele was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church, the Senior Center and the Sunflower Club. Willa enjoyed traveling, quilting, genealogy and bowling. She was named after the poet Willa Cather.

    On October 25, 1933 she was united in marriage to Clifford E. Steele at Topeka. He preceded her in death on January 14,1991. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alvina on November 27, 1937, a son, Clifford Norman Steele on December 20, 1992, a grandson, Rodney Steele on July 24, 1991 and a son-in-law Richard Lenherr on December 30,1980.

    Survivors include a son, Duane (Bonnie) Steele, St. Marys; a daughter, Kay (the late Richard) Lenherr, Topeka; grandchildren, Eric (Tammy) Steele, Heath Steele, Darrin Lenherr, Derek (Alisha) Lenherr, Marc Lenherr, Pamela (Peter) Del Castillo and Russell Steele; along with numerous great-grandchildren.

    Graveside funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 2, 2011 at the Valley View Cemetery in St. Marys. Mrs. Steele will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer Association and sent in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.piperfuneralhome.com.
