Obituary- Cowan, Kenneth 2

Kenneth V. Cowan
Kenneth V. Cowan, 79, Silver Lake, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his home in Silver Lake.
He was born October 23,1923 in Delia, the son of Lloyd V. and Marie DeBacker Cowan. He had lived in the Delia, Rossville and Silver Lake communities all of his life.
He was reared in the Delia com¬munity and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1941. He served in the United States Army as a Sgt. Tech. in the 621 Port Company 491 Port Battalion in the Pacific Theatre, New Guinea. He farmed in the Ross¬ville area. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for 42 years, retiring from the Data Corrections Department in 1983.
He was a member of St. Stanis¬laus Catholic Church in Rossville, and Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 in Topeka. He was a mem¬ber of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville, Veterans, of Foreign Wars Post No. 01650 in Topeka. He belonged to the Laval Order of Moose and, since 1978, the XYZ Club in Silver Lake, and the Senior Citizens of Silver Lake where he delivered meals for the senior homebound. He had been a past president of the Silver Lake High School Alumni Association. He was a member of Shawnee County Farm Bureau, and the Retired Santa Fe Oldtimers.
On February 12, 1943, he mar¬ried Mary Mattan in Delia. She sur¬vives.
Other survivors include a son, Mark V. Cowan, Kansas City, MO; three daughters, Diana Elevier and Denise Denton, Silver Lake, and Vic¬ki Wilson, Holton; a sister, Betty Entsminger, Topeka; five grandchil¬dren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was cel¬ebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Ross¬ville. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cem¬etery, St. Marys, where a detail team from Ft. Riley conducted a military grave service.
Family visitation was Sunday af¬ternoon at Piper-Verschelden Funer¬al Home. A rosary was recited at4:30 Sunday afternoon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Midland Hospice, or to the Silver Lake Senior Citizen Cen¬ter and sent in care of Piper-Ver¬schelden Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys 66536.
