Obituary- Homan, John

John C. “Jack” Homan
John C. “Jack” Homan, 71, St. Marys, died Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at his home in St. Marys.

He was born January 27, 1931, in St. Marys, the son of John J. and Regina A. McCormick Homan. He lived in St. Marys all of his life.

He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Grade School and St. Marys High School. He served in the United States Navy, on the ship USS Yorktown, during the Korean War. He worked for the United States Postal Services for 31 years, retiring in 1996.

Jack was member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, both in St. Marys. He served as captain of a Knights of Columbus team that fried chicken for the Immaculate Conception Church picnic for over 40 years. He was a member of Jim¬mie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville, where he helped with dinners for many years. He was a member of the United States Postal Workers Union. He helped with the commodity program in St. Marys the past several years. He also played in the Knights of Columbus Slo-pitch softball league in Topeka for many years.

On May 28, 1958, he married Mary Bennett in St. Marys. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Rod Homan, St. Marys; two daughters, Jacquelyn Cowan, Kansas City, MO, and Tracy Homan-Overmyer, St. Marys; two brothers, James E. Homan, Silver Lake, Ray D. Homan, Topeka; and eight grandchildren. Mr. Homan was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William J. Homan.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville conducted military graveside services.

A rosary was recited at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home Friday evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, or to the Jack Homan Grandchildren Education Fund and sent in care of Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street 66536.
