Obituary- Hughes, George

George Hughes
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church for George Lee Hughes, 66, Topeka. He died Thursday, Oct. 31,2002, at a Rossville nursing home.

Mr. Hughes owned and operated Hughes Tax Service for 45 years. He also farmed part time from 1958 to 2002 in the Goff and Soldier communities. He had been a business teacher at Havensville and at Highland Community College. He taught business and computer at Capital City High School in Topeka. He had been a principal, teacher and coach at Soldier Grade School and at Havensville Grade School, where he also was the Title I director. He was an elementary principal and business teacher at the Kickapoo Nation School in Powhattan, and he had been principal at Overbrook Elementary School.

Mr. Hughes also was a census taker for the U.S. Census Bureau, and he was co-owner of the Sunflower Supports Co. for the past three years.

He was born Jan. 1,1936, in Bancroft, the son of George and Anna Pauline Denning Hughes. He graduated from Wetmore High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business in 1958 and a master’s degree in school administration in 1964, both from Emporia State University. He measured ground for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service during the summers while tie was a student. He moved to Topeka in 1987.

Mr. Hughes was a member of Pi Omega Pi honorary business fraternity and Phi Delta Kappa honorary administrators fraternity, both at Emporia State University. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon at ESU, the National Association of Elementary Principals, Kansas Association of Elementary Principals, a life member of the National Education Association, and past president of both the Pottawatomie County Teachers Association and the Cheyenne Conference of the Principals Association.

He married Lena Lou Rogers in Wetmore in 1957. They were divorced. He married MaryAnn Channel on Feb. 18,1983. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Robert Lee Hughes, Overland Park, Kevin E. Hughes, Lawrence, and George “Jim’’ Hughes, Topeka; a daughter, M. Leann Dickson, Lawrence; and eight grandchildren.

Burial will be at St. Augustine Cemetery at Fidelity. Mr. Hughes will lie in state after 4 p.m. Sunday at the Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.
