Obituary- Kelly, John

Kelly
The death of John Kelly marks the passing of the last of Cross Creek’s early settlers. He was born at Medford, Mass., November 29, 1854, and departed this life Thursday, September 19, 1940, in the hospital at Holton from the effects of hypostatic pneumonia contracted from lying in bed for eight weeks with a broken leg.

He came to Kansas in 1864 during the Civil War struggle, settling near Wamego, Kans., and later moved to Emmett, Kans., where he spent most of his life, except the last ten years, which were spent in the Delia community.

He was proud of his age and enjoyed good health until the last two months.

He was united in marriage to Katie McNamara, April 16, 1890. They observed their 50th anniversary last spring.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Cowan and Mrs. Tom Hanrahan, both of Delia, Kans.; and two sons, Ed Kelly of Delia, and John A. Kelly of Phoenix, Ariz.; and 22 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren. His daughter, Mrs. Mary Hanrahan, preceded him in death in 1920, and his son. Pat Kelly, in 1925.

He was laid to rest beside this son and his wife. The latter was laid to rest just two months ago.

Funeral services were held from the Sacred Heart Church at Delia, with Rev. Jerome Twomey officiating. Interment was in the Holy Cross cemetery.

The pall bearers were Harold Cowan, Lewis Cowan, Lloyd Cowan, Leo Simecka, John Lane and Louis, Hobart.
