Obituary- Kelsey, Richard 1


Richard Kelsey
Richard “Dick” Dean Kelsey, 73, Topeka, formerly of Rossville, passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2000, at a Topeka hospital from heart disease.

He was born September 27, 1927, in Topeka, the son of Scott E. and Iva M. Carothers Kelsey.

Mr. Kelsey graduated from Topeka High School in 1945, and Kansas State University in 1950. Dick served as a cartographer in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong farmer in partnership with his two brothers. Mr. Kelsey was a member of Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene, and a local licensed minister in the Church of the Nazarene. Richard was on the Board of Directors for Kaw Valley State Bank and Trust He was a member of Masonic Lodge #17 in Topeka since 1949, and served as its Master in 1965. He was the Grand Master of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Kansas from 1972-1973. Mr. Kelsey was a member of Scottish Rite, Arab Shrine, and Sons of the American Revolution. He was appointed to the state Selective Service board by former Governor William Avery and also served on the Shawnee County Civil Service Board. He was past president of the Shawnee County Farm Bureau and served on the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service. While living in Rossville, he was also a certified lay speaker in the United Methodist Church, 4-H Community leader, Lions Club member, and a member of the local school board.

On February 19,1950, he married Greta D. Townsend, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter and her husband, Jeline and John Harclerode, Emporia; a son and his wife, Richard M. “Rick” and Darla Kelsey, Overland Park. He is also survived by two grandchildren—Jonathan and Justin Harclerode; and two brothers, Scott W. Kelsey, Rossville, and Sam Kelsey, Silver Lake.

Visitation was Friday at the Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene, 3501 S. W. Wanamaker Road, Topeka, from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service was held in Mount Hope Cemetery, Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life Service at the Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene.

Memorials may be made to the Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene, 3501 S.W. Wanamaker Road, Topeka 66614, or to the Shriners’ Hospitals for Children, c/o Arab Temple, 1305 South Kansas Ave., Topeka 66612.
