| 9701 |  | Obituary- Simmons, Edwin Edwin Simmons Edwin “Ed” Simmons, 82, Topeka, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at a Rossville nursing home. Mr. Simons [sic Simmons] served 14 years in the Army and was with the Counter Intelligence Corps. He later was a manufacturer’s representative until he retired in 1983. After he retired he was active in the Service Corps of Retired Executives and in the ACIC Veterans organization, where he served many years as chairman of the ACICV’s national membership committee. He was born Dec. 25, 1918, in Chillicothe, Mo., the son of John and Lula Dean Simmons. He was raised in Abilene and moved with his family to Rockford, Ill. He attended the University of Wisconsin. He moved to Topeka after he was discharged from the Army. He married Mary Tierney on July 30, 1940, at Richfield. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Edwin Craig Simmons, Denver; a daughter, Donna Marie Jewell, Topeka; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Simmons was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. David’s Episcopal Church. | 9706 |  | Obituary- Simpson, Charles Skidmore and Holmes Recover Body of Simpson The body of Charles Franklin Simpson, 12 of Route 6, who was drowned in the Kaw River west of Topeka, at Camp Mattingly, Saturday afternoon, at 5:15 was recovered from the river at 2:45 Sunday afternoon by Dick Skidmore and Emmett Holmes, a mile east of Camp Mattingly. The body was lodged on a sandbar in shallow water on north side of the river. Mr. Skidmore asks the party who has the rod and reel, used to drag for the body at Camp Mattingly to please return it to Dick Skidmore at Camp Mattingly. The boy lost his life when he stepped into a deep hole while wading with his cousin, Hurley Simpson. Hurley made an attempt to rescue him but Charles grabbed him and pulled him under the water. Hurley then was obliged to break the hold to save his own life, officers said. Charley was born May 29, 1937, in Wyola, Mont. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Blaine Bedell, Rossville; his father. Claude Simpson, Route 6; two sisters, Lillian Adell and Gladys Jean Simpson, both of the home; three half sisters, Mary Elizabeth Tuggle, Shelbyville, Mo.; Sheryl K. and Erma Mae Bedell, both of Rossville; a half- brother, Claude Simpson Jr., Paris, Mo.; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Simpson, St. Marys; and Mrs. Lela Wendler, Maple Hill; a step-grand father, Fred Wendler, Maple Hill; and a stepmother, Mrs. Claude Simpson, Route 6. Simpson Joel Richard Simpson, 41, Topeka, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1993, at a Kansas City, Kan., medical center from injuries he suffered Monday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident on Douglas County Road 1055. Mr. Simpson was a mechanic for 11 years for the city of Lawrence. He was an over-the-road trucker and presently was employed by Lawrence Ready Mix Industries in Lawrence. He served nine years in the Army including 26 months on the DMZ in Korea. He was born July 27, 1952, in Topeka, the son of Thomas M. "Shorty” and Helen M. Lord Simpson. Survivors include three sons, Tulsa Simpson, Robert Simpson and Andy Simpson, all of Lawrence; his mother, Helen M. Simpson, Topeka; three sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Woehr, St. Marys, Louise Johnson, Lenexa, and Eileen Langley, Topeka; and two brothers, John Simpson, Bonham, Texas, and Daniel Simpson, Topeka. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Military graveside services will be conducted by Topeka North Post No. 400 of the American Legion in Rossville Cemetery. Simpson, 40, suffered a head injury and died Tuesday afternoon at the University of Kansas Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said. According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, Simpson was driving a Lawrence Ready Mix cement truck south on county road 1055, between Lawrence and Eudora at 1:40 p.m., when he lost control and it overturned. | |

He was married to Helen M. Lord on Nov. 27, 1948, at Dover. She survives. A son, James Simpson, preceded him in death. On October 14, 2014, she passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She earned her Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University in 1957. After completing her degree, she joined the staff at Menninger’s Institute as a clinical psychologist. She taught briefly at Kansas State University. In 1966, she started a private practice in Manhattan, Kansas specializing in child and family psychotherapy that she retired from 38 years later. Kathleen Sinnett was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, E Robert Sinnett. She is survived by daughters, Lucy Sinnett Schuler and Kate Sinnett; stepsons Brian and Dan Sinnett; son-in-law, Steve Schuler; sister, Lucy Morgan; brother-in-law, Dick Morgan; first cousin, Joy Ross Baggett; grandchildren Frederick and Kathleen Schuler, and Evan Markowski. Mrs. Sippel was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church and Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She was married to Jack Branson Sippel May 9, 1954, in Topeka. He died June 28, 1993. | 9713 |  | Obituary- Skaggs, Harold Harold Skaggs, Sr. Harold M. Skaggs Sr., 73, prominent Dodge City businessman, died in a Wichita Hospital after a long illness. He was a former resident of the Topeka and Rossville area. Born in Allen, Kansas, he moved to Topeka in 1910. He and Miss Virgelene McPherson were married in 1913 at Rossville. They lived in Topeka for several years and their sons, Milton and Clarence, were born there. The family moved to Dodge City in 1917. Mr. Skaggs was associated with the W.A.L. Thompson hardware firm for a number of years. In January 1930, he bought out the interest of the late Lester Luther in the Luther-McCoy auto dealership at Dodge City. This auto firm became McCoy-Skaggs and later Skaggs motor company. Mrs. Skaggs died in 1955. Mr. Skaggs and Wilma Curts were married in 1956. He retired several years ago. Survivors include his widow and two sons; a sister, six grandchildren and six great¬grandchildren. | |

Sister Frances was a housekeeper about 28 years for Atchison sisters who taught in Benedictine-staffed schools in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. From 1947 until she retired in 1982, she assisted with domestic services at Mount St. Scholastica and Benedictine colleges. She was born Feb. 4, 1900, at Hlinsko, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Pokorny Skalla. She moved to the United States when she was 5 and lived in Hanover until 1918, when she joined the Benedictine sisters in Atchison. She professed her religious vows in 1919. Survivors include a sister, Mary Masat, Hanover. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount St. Scholastica Chapel. Burial will be in the convent cemetery. Skelley Aug. 19, 1931, in Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett. He died Oct. 20, 1961. A daughter, Alice Ellen Skelley, died Nov. 4, 1938. She was born February 28,1915 at Guide Rock, NE, the daughter of Frank C. and Flora Meeks Fox. She grew up in the Bird City, KS, community where she attended school. Mrs. Skidmore had lived in the Willard, Hoyt and Rossville communities most of her adult life. She was a homemaker and mother. She had worked as an operator for William’s Telephone Company and retired as a nurse’s aide from St. Francis Hospital. Mrs. Skidmore was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church, Rossville Senior Center, Rossville Rollers, Countryside Club and the Birthday Club. She was united in marriage to Howard Norris Stiles in 1939. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1964. She later married J.B. “Buck” Skidmore, he died in 1987. Mrs. Skidmore was also pre-ceded in death by a step-son Monte Lee Stiles on June 27, 2005, her son, Howard Dale Stiles on August 28, 2005, a brother, Roy Fox, two grandchildren, Kenneth Mark Stiles in 1962 and Linda Stiles Cortes in 1976. Survivors include three daughters, Laura Miller, Las Vegas, Marie Owens and Jean (Patrick) Schneider all of Rossville; a sister, Velma Darby in Maryland; a sister-in-law, Helen Fox in Colorado; a step daughter, Polly Stoner in Texas; a daughter-in-law, Toni Stiles, Rossville; five grandsons; five great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Skidmore worked for Rock Island Lines 36 years and was a roadmaster before he retired in 1960. He was born Oct. 24, 1906, at Junior, W.Va., the son of Albert and Martha Swik Skidmore. He grew up in the Willard and Rossville communities. Mr. Skidmore was a charter member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks lodge at Dalhart, Texas. His first wife, Mrs. Gladys Prater Skidmore, died in 1976. He was married to Gertrude Stiles Aug. 1, 1981, at Rossville. She survives. Mr. Skidmore worked for Rock Island Lines 36 years and was a roadmaster before he retired in 1960. He was born October 24, 1906, at Junior, W.Va., the son of Albert and Martha Swik Skidmore. He grew up in the Willard and Rossville communities. Mr. Skidmore was a charter member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge at Dalhart, Tex. His first wife, Mrs. Gladys Prater Skidmore, died in 1976. He was married to Gertrude Stiles August 1, 1981, at Rossville. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Stoner, Odessa, Tex.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Laura Miller, Bullhead City, Ariz., Mrs. Marie Owens, Linwood, and Mrs. Jan Schneider, Rossville; a sister, Mrs. Laura Jackson, Willard; two brothers, Joe Skidmore, Yellville, Ark., and Richard Skidmore, Holton; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. | 9745 |  | Obituary- Smatla, Alice 1 Alice Laura Smatla MERIDEN — Alice Laura Smatla, 75, Meriden, died Wednesday, April 12, 1995, at a Winchester nursing home. Mrs. Smatla had been a bookkeeper for Central National Bank in Topeka and later worked at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Office in Topeka until she retired. She was born Sept. 29, 1919, a McLouth, the daughter of Perle and Gertrude Stone Hillix. She attended Eureka Grade School and was graduated from McLouth High School. She moved to Meriden from Silver Lake in 1954. Mrs. Smatla was a member of Meri-den United Methodist Church and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Meriden. She was married to Henry John Smatla on Oct. 19, 1949, in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Larry L. Smatla, Oskaloosa; a daughter, Marcia L. Reiter, Topeka; a sister, Pearl H. Thomas, Lawrence; and three grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Meriden United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Czech-Moravian Cemetery, Delia. Mrs. Smatla will lie in state from noon Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday at Barker-Price Mortuary in Topeka where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. She was born September 29, 1919, at McLouth, the daughter of Perle and Gertrude Stone Hillix. She attended Eureka Grade School and graduated from McLouth High School. She had lived in Silver Lake before moving to Meriden in 1954. | 9747 |  | Obituary- Smatla, Bennie Bennie Smatla ROSSVILLE — Services were April 26 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Fla., for Bennie F. Smatla, 84, Jacksonville, formerly of Rossville, who died April 23,2003, at a Jacksonville hospital where he was admitted the day before. He had a heart ailment. He was born June 11,1918, in Maple Hill, to Tom and Marie Smatla. He spent his early life in Rossville and graduated from Rossville High School. Ha spent many years in Jacksonville. He was a federal Civil Service employee at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville for 15 years before he retired. He was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the Navy in August 1941. He underwent basic training at the Naval Station in Great Lakes, III., and then was a fire fighter instructor in Memphis, Tenn. During World War II, he served with the First Expedition Forces on Guadalcanal in the Pacific, on Guam and in other war zones. He retired from the Navy on April 4,1965. His military honors included the Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three battle stars, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville and had served for 33 years as an elder at the church. He married LaVerne Letter on March 20,1971, in Jacksonville. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Rita Antonicwicz, Albany, Ga., and Belinda Sawyer, Memphis; a stepdaughter, Georgie Keller, Acworth, Ga.; three brothers, Henry Smatla, Meriden, and Edward Smatla and William Smatla. both of Silver Lake; two sisters, Lydia F. Carl, Prairie Village, and Marie DeVeney, Raytown, Mo.; and two grandsons. A detachment from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station and Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted graveside services at Jacksonville Memorial Gardens in Orange Park, Fla. He was born Aug. 18, 1923, at Maple Hill, the son of Thomas G. and Marie A. (Juran) Smatla, He graduated from Rossville High School. Ed was a cattle and grain farmer. He was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church. He was married to Elizabeth Howard Smith in 1970. She preceded him in death on June 20, 2005. Surviving are 2 sisters: Lydia (Dailey) Carl of Prairie Village and Marie DeVeney of Raytown, MO; a brother: Henry Smatla of Meriden; a step-daughter: Debra Like of Rossville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Sat., Feb. 21, 2009, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence. Interment in the Czech-Moravan Cemetery. | 9749 |  | Obituary- Smatla, Elizabeth Elizabeth Howard Smatla Elizabeth Ann Howard Smatla was born Oct. 19, 1921 at Fort Scott the daughter of Nelson E. and Bessie (Cleland) Howard. She attended school at Pleasanton, KS, Fort Scott Junior College, and received a B.S. degree at the University of Kansas. Elizabeth married Ralph Smith in 1944, and their daughter, Debra, was born of this union. After moving to Lawrence she married Edward Smatla in 1970; they resided on their farm near Rossville in the Grove Community. Elizabeth was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church and the Literary Club of Rossville. She was a charter member of Chapter HX of the P.E.O. Sisterhood at Rossville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Butler, and her parents. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Ed Smatla of the home, Silver Lake; her daughter, Debra and her husband, Bill Like, of Loogootee, IN; her brother, Chuck Howard of Topeka; and many other family members and friends. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thurs., June 23, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, North Topeka. Interment will be in the Czech-Moravian Cemetery. | 9750 |  | Obituary- Smatla, Henry 1 Henry John Smatla Henry John Smatla, 93, Meriden, died Dec. 12 201.3, at Linnwood Park of Meriden in Meriden, KS. He was born June 6, 1920, at Maple Hill, the son of Thomas and Marie Smatla. Mr. Smatla was a member of Community Church, located north of Rossville, The Rossville Presbyterian Church and the ZCBJ Lodge. Mr. Smatla served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 and enlisted and served in the Navy from 1941 to 1945. He served sea duty for 18 months in the European Theater, for which he received two battle stars and served 26 months in the Asiatic- Pacific Campaign, Fleet Air Wing 17, for which he received three battle stars. During that time, he traveled 10 oceans and seas. Mr. Smatla was an AVA machinist. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945. Mr. Smatla married Alice Laura Hilllx, October 19,1949, in Topeka. She preceded him in death on April 12,1995. Surviving are a son, Larry Lee Smatla and wife Linda of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Marcia Lynn Reiter and husband Ron of Topeka; three grandchildren, Laura Marie Smatla Turner and husband Jim, Travis Lee Reiter and wife Cait and Luke Edward Smatla and wife Heather; great-grandchildren, Garrett and Lydia Turner; and sisters, Lydia Carl and Marie DeVeney. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Thomas, Ben, Edward, and William, and a sister, Alice Kingman. Mr. Smatla first farmed north of Silver Lake and north of Rossville. He moved to a farm north of Meriden in 1954, where grain and cattle were his pride. He was a member of Meriden United Methodist Church, Topeka North Post 400 of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Moose Lodge 555. He served as a board member of the Meriden Co-Op; the Meriden United Methodist Church; and served on the FHA Board for 12 years. He was a former member of Meriden Lodge 236, AF & AM. Funeral services were Dec. 16 at Meriden United Methodist Church. Military honors were conducted at Czech-Moravian Cemetery, Delia.
