Anna M. Verschelden will celebrate her 80th birthday as guest of honor at a covered dish dinner Sunday, March 14, at 12:30 p.m., followed by a reception from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Citizen Center in St. Marys.

She was born March 10, 1919, near St. Marys and has lived in the community all of ho life. She was a homemaker and farm wife and has been a personal care giver to the elderly for the past few years. Anna married A.T. “Babe” Verschelden October 5, 1937, in St. Marys. He is deceased.

Hosting the occasion will be her children, a grandchild, and their spouses — Theresa Schleif, Alice Zeller, Joan Worrel, Regina Verschelden, John Verschelden, Rita Etzel, Ann Fouts, Anita Culbertson, Frank Verschelden, Margaret Cunningham, Kenny Verschelden, Joe Verschelden and Linda DeHart. It is requested that no gifts be given.

M.L. Whearty of Rossville was 80 years old on February 29. He was born at Westmoreland and came to Rossville as a young child.

His marriage to Ella Johnson took place in 1907 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1957. Their children, Galen, Calvin, Riley, Everett, Ruth and Lester, were present for the golden wedding celebration. They also have 12 grandchildren.

90 YEARS OLD TODAY
Mrs. Mamie Worthington of this city celebrated her 90th birthday today, July 29.
Mrs. Worthington was born July 29 1864 in Sommerset, Pa. Her mother passed away when she was seven and at the age of 16, she came to Kansas to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. John Fritz of Rossville; they had lived at Sommerset before coming here.
On February 21, 1884, Mamie Catherine Mostoller married Walter B. Worthington in Rossville and they were parents of four children: A son, who died in infancy, and three daughters, Mrs. Blanche Gilbert of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Maude Reinhardt of Topeka and Mrs. Faye Wilder of Meriden.
The family lived on the Higginbotham farm one-half mile north of Rossville for 16 years, then on the Henry Bond farm 1 1/2 miles west of town for 15 years. With the exception of a year they lived at Willard and a year at Silver Lake, they farmed in this community. Mr. Worthington passed away in March, 1927, and his widow has lived in Rossville on Navarre street since. She is one of the oldest living residents of this community.
Mrs. Worthington is active and enjoying good health. She has a garden and keeps abreast of the times with the radio and newspapers and keeps up regular correspondence with her family. She has two granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

No rain was reported in Topeka on Sunday, July 26, but there was a shower reported at 3507 S.W. Twilight Drive in Topeka at the home of Mickey Shannon. Mickey, along with the help of Debbie Allen of Route 8, Topeka, held a bridal shower in honor of Suzy Allen who is to become the bride of Stan Thompson on Sunday, August2.

Mrs. Frederic Zickefoose was the honoree, Wednesday evening at her home, when a group of thirty ladies called unannounced to give her a surprise miscellaneous shower. Miss Grace Sanders and Mrs. Williamette Thomas of Manhattan, entertained, Tuesday evening, at the home of Mrs. Peter Navarre with a miscellaneous shower honoring Miss Thelma Cless.

The guests were entertained on the lawn, brilliantly lighted with floor lamps and electric lights strung from the porch to trees. The evening was spent piecing a four-patch friendship quilt for the honoree, and each guest assisted in writing a menu and providing thoughtful suggestions for use by the bride-to-be.

To the strains of “Here Comes the Bride” played by Miss Mary Ann Hartzell, the guests marched into the dining room where Miss Cless found her shower of gifts, many and useful, arranged on the table. The table was lovely with streamers of pink and blue crepe paper hung from the chandeliers. A pink and blue parasol also hung from the chandelier over the table, symbolic of a shower.

Refreshments of ice cream and two kinds of cake were served. The invited guests were Mesdames Charlie Todd, Dover, Roscoe Lawrence, Mrs. Clyde Cless.
