Family Sheet- Baird, James P.
James Potts Baird
James was born near Russelville, Lawrence County, Illinois, on August 13, 1851. He met and married May Martin Rider on February 27, 1873 in Birds, Lawrence County, Illinois. James and May then came to Rossville, Kansas being one of the pioneer citizens of this city. James died at his home on Pine Street last Monday afternoon July 10, 1905. He died from asthma trouble.
Mr. Baird has been an uncomplaining sufferer for years from this disease and death came as a welcome relief from its pangs. The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. Church Tuesday at 2:00 with the Rev. Talmage delivering an able and touching address. Interment took place in the city cemetery.
Mr. Baird was born at Russellville, Illinois and came to Rossville in 1878. He united with the M.E. Church in 1882. He was married to May Martin Rider and from this union ten children were born, two sons and two daughters dying in infancy. The wife, one daughter, and five sons survive him. Mr. Baird was the last of his fathers family, his parents, a brother, and four sisters preceding him to the mysterious beyond.
Mr. Baird was a good man. He bore his sufferings patiently and with Christian fortitude. During his long residence here he gathered about him a host of friends who sincerely mourn his death. The grief stricken family have the sympathy of all who know them.

Family Sheet- Baird, Mary
May was born in Birds, Lawrence County, Illinois on October 7, 1854. She met and married James Potts Baird on February 27, 1873. In 1878 they came to Rossville, and were one of the pioneer families of the town. Her obituary states, Mrs. James Baird died at her home in the west part of town Monday evening January 7th at the age of 52 years and 3 months. She had been a sufferer from consumption for more than two years, bearing her affliction to the end with patient Christian fortitude. Her husband, J.P. Baird, passed on to the mysterious realm of the spirit land one year ago July.
Mrs. Baird leaves six children, five boys, Luther, Charles, William, John and Martin, and one girl, Mrs. Blanche Davis, all of whom were at the bedside during her last hours.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon in the M.E. Church conducted by the Rev. Webb, and interment took place in the city cemetery.
Many friends filled the church to pay last tribute of respect to the dead whom they had known and respected for so many years for Mrs. Baird was a kind considerate neighbor and an exemplary Christian woman.

Petals of Her Life
As beautiful as a rose to see,
Was her life she lived so gracefully.
She made things precious by her touch,
Her selfless love lives on in each of us.
The petals of her life fell one by one,
Each a gift of her heart till there were none.
Yet her radiance blooms once again
In fields of glory with no end.
