Pioneer Rossville Citizen Takes His Own Life

M.L. Cless Found Dead Back of Son's Hardware Store With Bullet In His Brain

Mr. M.L. Cless, aged 87 years, 1 month and 17 days, one of the early settlers of this community ended his life Saturday afternoon sometime between 5:00 and 6:00 by shooting himself in the right temple with a .32 calibre revolver.

A shot was heard by Ed Baird and R.A. Shipley who were working across the alley, but thought nothing of it and did not investigate, and by Abe Patterson, who works in C.E. Cless's hardware. This was about 5:15 they say. Mr. Patterson went to the back door of the store and looked out but was prevented from seeing the body at the time by a number of implements standing between him and where the body lay, and thot no more of the incident.

The tragedy was discovered by Harry Jamieson who happened to pass back of the hardware store from the Hawk barber shop, shortly after 6 o'clock.

Mr. C.E. Cless who just arrived home from the store at 6 o'clock, was hastily summoned, and Dr. Miller notified. The latter got in touch with the coroner and the circumstances explained and permission was granted to remove the body. It was taken to the Charles Cless home.

The tragedy was a terrible shock to the relatives. Mr. Cless had been about town as usual Saturday and assisted Mr. C.E. Cless during the afternoon in setting up a wagon near the scene of his death. He did not appear under any particular melancholy mood and talked quite casually about ordinary things with his son Walter as late as 5 o'clock.

The revolver used was one that the deceased gentleman had owned for years and kept in his trunk with a number of old shells black with age.

Mr. Cless had been a resident in the community since March 1, 1876, coming here from Illinois. He was a native of Perry county, Pa., where he was born January 18, 1848. He was about 18 years old when he removed to Illinois, living there about ten years. He was married to Sarah A. Shearer in Illinois, January 14, 1869. Eight children were born to this union, two of the children, daughters preceeding him. Mrs. Cless passed away January 24, 1918.

A few years later Mr. Cless and his son, Clint, who had continued in the old home on Spruce street sold their house and since that time Mr. Cless had made his home with another son, Mr. A.A. Cless and Mrs. Cless.

Mr. Cless first settled on a farm west of Rossville owned at that time by Captain Gutshall, now occupied by the Fred Heiland family. Later the family moved east of Rossville on what is now the Morris Bond farm. This was vacated in 1891 and the town property purchased where Mrs. Cless passed away.

Mr. Cless is survived by six sons, W.H. of Denver, Colo., R.S., of Pueblo, Colo., Chas. E., A.A., J.W. and C.C. all of Rossville.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church of which the deceased was a member, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Potwin, a former pastor of the Rossville church. Interment was made in the family lot in Rossville cemetery. Mr. Cless was also one of the earliest members of the A.O.U.W. lodge.

Out-of-town relatives here for the funeral included: Miss Maud Loy, Mr. James Loy, Mr. Emery Diehl and Mr. Engle, of Chapman; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hassinger of TOpeka; Mrs. Louie O'Dell and daughter, Helen of Topeka; Mr. R.S. Cless, of Pueblo, Colo.

Mrs. Cless Laid to Rest Saturday

The funeral of Mrs. M.L. Cless was held last Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the Presbyterian church, the services conducted by the Rev. A.J. Crawford, who was assisted by the Rev. F.H. Bentley, of the Christian church.

The large circle of friends made in her forty-three years residence here was largely represented in the sorrowing congregation that gathered at the church Saturday to pay their last respects to the departed friend. A veritable bower of floral offerings from neighbors of the family, the Presbyterian aid society and friends encompassed the casket.

Grandma passed away peacefully as she was making her way through the hallway of her home, sinking to her knees gently and resting in that position when her husband arrived home from town last Thursday evening about 5 p.m. Death was due to heart failure. The physician's examination determined she had passed away some little time before being found.

Mrs. Cless was born March 2, 1851, in Cumberland County, Pa., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Shearer, and was 66 years, 10 months and 22 days old at her decease.

At the age of 4 years her parents moved to Illinois near the town of Lena. She was united in marriage to M.L. Cless Jan. 14, 1869 at Lena, Ill., and they remained there until 1876, when they came to Rossville. The first year they lived on the farm now occupied by Fred Heiland, then lived four years on the Mulvane ranch. They next moved to the farm now owned by John Gutshall, where they remained five years. From there they went to the Shearer farm southeast of Rossville now owned by Morris Bond where they remained until 1892, when the family moved to the present home in Rossville.

The surviving members of the family are the husband and six sons, Will Cless, of Denver, Colo, Charles E., Abner A., J. Water, and Clinton C., of Rossville; and Ralph Cless, of Pueblo, Colol.

Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery.

Obituary- Clothier, Nathan
Obituary- Clothier, Nathan
Nathan S. Clothier

The people of Rossville and surrounding community were shocked and genuinely grieved early Tuesday morning when news of the death of Dr. N. S. Clothier, of St. Marys, was announced. His death occurred at 1 a. m. Tuesday morning, Nov., 1926, in the S. B. A. hospital, Topeka. Only a few of his Rossville friends knew that he had undergone an operation last Saturday.

Dr. Clothier was looked upon almost as one of our own citizens, having begun his dentistry practice here in 1900 or 1901, before locating in St. Marys, after his marriage. He had kept a local office for his use each month up until about two years ago. He was a man of great personal charm, with sterling qualities of character. His untimely decease will leave a void here almost as great as in his home community, where he was greatly esteemed and had been honored time after time with offices of trust and responsibility.

Nathan Summer Clothier was a native of Lewis county, West Virginia, where he was born April 2, 1873, and at the date of his death was 53 years and 7 months old. He was the son of H. H. and Jane Clothier.

He came to Kansas with his parents at the age of five and his early life was spent in the vicinity of Paxico. After completing his dentistry course his first practice was in Rossville. He located in St. Marys in 1902 and had been a resident of that city for the past twenty-four years.

He was united in marriage to Phoebe C. Turner, at Rock Creek, Kansas, November 5, 1902 and three children were born to this union, all whom survive him. They are Horace T., Topeka, Vera and Ione of the home address. He is also survived by his mother, three brothers and one sister: Dr. S. H. Clothier, Paxico; R. W. Clothier, Hilmer, Calif.; C. L. Clothier, Florence, Kansas; Mrs. Mary Martin, Deer Creek, Okla.

Funeral services were held today at 2:30 p. m. in the Congregational church at St. Mary, conducted by the Rev. M. W. Baker, of Topeka. The body was taken to Maple Hill for burial.

MARILYN COCHRAN

Weakened by a severe attack of the measles, Marilyn Joan Cochran, 9-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Cochran, living east of Silver Lake, was drowned Wednesday afternoon, May 24, 1944, when she struck her head against a rock after falling into a shallow pool in the yard at the Cochran home. Marilyn’s mother, who had been attending the girl night and day during the measles siege, was taking a nap when the girl left the house. Marilyn apparently became overbalanced and fell into the water. Undoubtedly she became dazed when her head struck the rock. The pool of water, formed by recent rains, is only about eight inches deep. The girl already was dead when her mother awakened and left the house to search for her. A bruise on the forehead showed where she had fallen against the rock. Marilyn was born February 1, 1935. Besides her parents, she is survived by three brothers, Lieut. Burton Cochran, Fort Worth, Texas; Cadet Leland Cochran, Amarillo, Texas and Clayton Cochran of the home; and three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Cochran, Route 6, and Mrs Adelle Bills, of Rossville

IN UNAVOIDABLE ACCIDENT
RICHARD COFFEY IS KILLED

Richard Coffey, 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Coffey, of Stockton, Calif., was almost instantly killed Saturday evening about 9 o’clock on Main Street, in front of the Wingerd store.

He ran into the street in front of a car driven by Roy Searcy and his body and skull crushed when the front wheels passed over his body. He was taken into Dr. Miller’s office across the street, but died immediately. Searcy was driving so slowly he stopped his car before it had gone its length.

Thus the life of the little fellow was given to bring home the danger children have been flirting with, every Saturday evening in particular, for several years past. A motor car drive is almost helpless to prevent a serious accident because he is confronted with three dangers---children playing with three dangers---children out into the streets; glaring lights from cars and long truck bodies protruding almost to the center of the street, which cause bottle necks for traffic if they happen to be parked on opposite sides of the curb.

Dickie made his home here with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gutshall. He was a bright little fellow, popular with his schoolmates and ambitious far beyond his years to work on the Gutshall farm.

He was one of eight children of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Coffey, who live in Stockton, Calif. The surviving members of his family are a sister, Mary Lou, who also lives with Mr. and Mrs. Gutshall; four other sisters, two brothers with their parents, Shirley, Etta, Patricia, and Phyllis, Gene and Fred.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Presbyterian church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. N. P. Olney.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Arline Reid, Miss Norma Jean Fawl and Miss Peggy Janette Navarre.

Pall bearers were, Samuel Hahn, Howard McMahan, Dean Cless and Charles Keller.

Burial in Rossville City cemetery.

Obituary- Coleman, Thomas 1
Obituary.

Thomas J. Coleman, a venerable and highly esteemed citizen of Rossville, entered into rest, June 21st, 1895.

He was born in Maryland, March 20, 1806. When fourteen years of age he moved to Washington, Indiana, where he lived until 1869, from whence he removed to Kansas, settling in Menoken Tp., Shawnee county, where two sons now reside.

He was married to Lucinda Martin, Aug. 25th, 1827. His wife, with whom he lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding, was called Home nearly eighteen years ago. Ten children, five sons and five daughters, were born to them. Three were in attendance at the funeral service, the other four being in New Mexico. Father Coleman united with the Christian Church fifty five years ago, ever since which time he remained a faithful member of the same. This Father in Israel had for several years made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Gilbert, and until the last few years was a familiar face in Rossville, visiting the sick, calling on friends and regular at church services. As the infirmities of old age crept on him he became confined to the house, and for nearly seventeen months was in his room most of the time. At times he suffered greatly, but always bore it patiently, looking forward to his releases with hopes for a blessed future, often expressing a wish to die and be at rest. He was glad to have friends call, and to talk with them of the hope beyond, his conception of spiritual truths growing clearer day by day.

Obituary- Coleman, Thomas 2
Two days before his death he was taken very sick with cramping in his stomach which continued until death, although his speech near the last could not be distinctly understood the last words were something about home and mother. His consciousness to the last was manifest in the fact that he folded his arms across his breast and breathed his last with his eyes and mouth closed. As a tired child goes to sleep in the arms of its mother so this Saintly Father fell asleep in the arms of Jesus. Owing to the peculiar views which he had often expressed concerning funeral sermons none was preached, but the friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert on Sunday at one o'clock. The choir sang "Safe in the arms of Jesus." Rev. Paddleford of the M.E. Church read a portion of scripture, offered prayer, made a brief statement of the life of the deceased and the remains were carried to the station followed by relatives and many friends, from thence by rail to Menoken, where other friends met them and conveyed them to Prairie Home Cemetery where other children, Grandchildren, Great-grand-children, and [continued on next item]

many friends had gathered to pay their last respects to Father, Grandfather and friend.

Rev. Ingles, of the Christian Church offered prayer, followed by a sketch of his life, and the mortal remains of Grand-father Coleman were laid to rest, beside that of his companion, to await the resurrection morning.

"Blessed by the dead which die in the Lord." "So Jesus slept; God's dying Son passed through the grave, and blessed the bed. Rest here, blest Saint till from His throne the morning break and pierce the shade.

A Friend.
