| 6401 |  | Obituary- Hoover, Kate Mr. S. F. Hoover of this city and Mr. Wm. Hoover, of Holton drove to Atherton. Mo., Sunday, called by the death of their mother, Mrs. Kate Hoover, who passed away Sunday, morning at 6 o’clock. Mrs. Hoover died at the home of her son Mr. T. A. Hoover, with whom she made her home. Mrs. Hoover had reached the age of 96 years, 3 months and 9 days. She retained her faculties up until her last wakeful moment in life, quietly passing away as she slept. The funeral was held Monday, July 7, at 2 p. m., and the body was interred at Salem church near the city of Atherton. The surviving mem¬bers of her family are five sons: Mr. T. A. Hoover, Atherton, Mo., Mr. H. L. Hoover, living in California, Mr. A. Hoover, Independence, Ks., Mr. W. Hoover, Holton, Mr. S. F. | 6403 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Alice MRS. ALICE HOPKINS Graveside services for Mrs. Alice Hopkins, 90, were at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Rossville Cemetery. She died Friday evening in a Topeka nursing home; where she had been living for several years. A resident of Rossville most of her life, Mrs. Hopkins was born in Indiana. She was the widow of Ira Hopkins, longtime resident and businessman in Rossville. Survivors include two step sons and three step daughters and nine grandchildren. | |
| 6404 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Arthur Arthur E. Hopkins LAWRENCE - Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey Funeral Home here for Arthur E. Hopkins, 74, Lawrence, who died Sunday in a Lawrence hospital. He was born Jan. 27, 1903, in Oklahoma, and lived in Topeka and Rossville many years before moving to California in 1945. He was an electrician and a member of the Church of Christ of Lawrence. His widow, Mrs. Ruby Hopkins, survives at the home. Other survives include two sons, Robert Hopkins, Los Angeles, and Eugene Hopkins, Midwest City, Okla.; a brother, Walter Hopkins, Route 6, Topeka; a sister, Mrs. Ella Mae Barrett, Florence; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Anna Belle Black, Route 3, Lawrence, and Mrs. Dorothy Mendenhall, Denver; a stepson, Carl Baker, Denver; 15 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Burial will be in McLouth Cemetery. | |

The funeral was held today at 2 o'clock from Shellabarger's chapel. Mrs. Hopkins was the wife of Fred E. Hopkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Hopkins of this city. The Hopkins home was 901 North Madison. Beside her husband she is survived by three children, Fred 12, Walter [8?], Ella May, 2; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.G. | 6406 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Bertha d.1913 Bertha Orwan was born Dec. 21, 1875 in Newbloomfield, Perry county, Pennsylvania, and departed this world Sept. 24, 1913. Her parents died while she was only a few years old and she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. George Stumbaugh and removed to Kansas in 1883 at the age of eight. On Jan. 16, 1895 she was united in marriage to Ira Hopkins. To this union eight children were born two of whom died while infants. Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins united with the Methodist church in 1891. Mrs. Hopkins was an ideal mother whose whole thought was for her family. She was loved by all her neighbors for her kindly and sunny disposition. Her loss will be felt most keenly by the whole community. The funeral was held from the Methodist church Friday, Sept. 26 conducted by the Rev. J.K. Miller. Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery. | |
| 6407 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Bertha L. d.1905 Mrs. Bertha Hopkins, died at her home in Shawnee, Ok., Wednesday, March 18, 1905 at the age of 26 yrs. Her death was due to blood poisoning induced by childbirth. Her maiden name was Templin. The oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Templin who reside at Silver Lake, Kansas. Besides her husband and parents she leaves two children, little boys, aged two and four years, also two brothers and one sister who live with their parents at the Lake. The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church at this place last Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J.G. Mayer of Topeka. The funeral was very largely attended, the church being crowded to the doors with sympathizing friends and neighbors. The burial took place in the Rossville cemetery. The bereaved husband returned to Oklahoma Sunday where he will ship his goods and return to this city to make his home. The two children are in care of the grandparents Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Hopkins. | |
| 6408 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Carl Carl Hopkins Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Assumption Catholic Church for Carl O. Hopkins, 78, 1924 N. Central, who died Sunday in a Topeka hospital. He was born May 10, 1896, at Rossville and spent most of his life in the Topeka community. He served in the Navy during World War I. He was a coach car man for Santa Fe Railway and worked for the railway 47 years before he retired in 1960. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church and Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion. He was married to Retha Kirby on April 7, 1967. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Orwin L. Hopkins, 2321 Duncan Drive, Robert Hopkins, 1815 Lott and Bernard C. Hopkins, 5625 W. 16th; three sisters, Mrs. Clara McDonald, 721 Roosevelt, Mrs. Dorothy Sader, Fort Riley, and Mrs. Gladys Patterson, Amarillo, Texas; and four grandchildren. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Hopkins will lie in state from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Brennan Funeral Home where parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday. | |
| 6409 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Emma Emma Bertha Hopkins, the four year old child of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Hopkins, died Friday morning Mar. 4, 1904. The funeral services were conducted at the home, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. by Rev. Clyde L. Kuhn. The little girl was taken sick with appendicitis about a week before her death. Though every effort was made to save her life, all was in vain, and at 6 o'clock Friday morning, with the severest pain and suffering, the little life went out in death. This is twice that the death angel has come into this home. And each time a little girl with her sunshine and innocent has been taken to her heavenly home. Though the hearts of the father and mother are torn with sorrow and grief, yet God who doth all things well sustains them. | 6410 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Ira 1 Ira T. Hopkins Funeral services for Ira Hopkins were held Saturday afternoon, May 20 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church conducted by the pastor, Don Jones. Mrs. Hopkins passed away Wednesday night, May 17, after a brief illness in a Topeka hospital. Music for the service was furnished by Mrs. Lorene Harth and Mrs. Maxine Trimble, with Mrs. Irene Campbell, accompanist. Pallbearers were Joe Parr, John Lillard, Glen Davis, Shirley Parr, Wm. Hess and Ralph Page. Burial was in Rossville cemetery. Mr. Hopkins was a native son, born in this community Dec. 15, 1875, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Hopkins. He spent his early life on the Hopkins farm west of Rossville. His first wife died in the early part of the century, with six children born to this union. Some years after death he married Alice Ross, who with five children, survive him. They are three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Patterson, Wichita; Mrs. Clara McDonald and Mrs. Dorothy Fader, Topeka; two sons, Carl Hopkins, Topeka; and Marvin Hopkins, Miami, Florida. One son, Omar, preceded him in death. One sister, Ida Ayers, Uvalde, Texas also survives. For over forty years, Mr. Hopkins was in the mercantile business, first in hardware and later in general merchandise. He retired some years ago and had lived quietly at his home until fatal illness. He was a member of the Rossville Methodist church since Aug. 6, 1905. Mr. Hopkins had an abiding love of his community and his neighbors in Rossville. He loved to help other people, and anyone who knew him came to depend upon him for advice and counsel. He was always ready to extend a helping hand to those who needed it, and he set an example of goodness, patience and neighborliness. | 6411 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Ira 2 Ira Hopkins was taken to Stormont Hospital early last week for a general check-up. He became seriously ill this week when pneumonia developed and Tuesday, he was given blood transfusions. His son, Marvin, flew in from Florida, called home by his father's illness. Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Patterson of Wichita also have been here. Mrs. Patterson formerly was Gladys Hopkins. --- As we go to press news came that Mr. Hopkins passed away this Thursday morning. | 6412 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Josiah Josiah Thomas Hopkins was born June 4, 1845, in Phelps county, Missouri, died May 5, 1921, aged 75 years, 11 months and 1 day. At the age of 10 he came to Kansas with his parents in 1855, locating near Tecumseh, Ks. In March 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca E. Heslet. To this union nine children were born, four of whom survive. Mr. Hopkins came to Rossville with his family in 1878 locating first southwest of Rossville on what is known as the Elmer Young farm. In 1880 he sold the place and purchased the present Hopkins farm northwest of Rossville where he continued to reside until 1907 when he moved into town. During his long residence here Mr. Hopkins had served almost continuously for 35 years as Justice of the Peace. While too young to serve in the army of the Civil War, he was a member of the Kansas National guard at the time of the Price raid into Kansas. After the war he made three trips across the plains of Kansas to Denver as a freighter, the last time loading out from Wamego as the railroad had reached that point in its westward reach. As a mark of respect the business houses of Rossville closed during the funeral services Sat. afternoon, May 7. The services were held in the Methodist church, the sermon preached by the Rev. H.L. Nelson of Topeka. The pallbearers were friends whom Mr. Hopkins had selected himself to serve in that capacity. They were Will VanOrsdol., F.P. McCollough, J.C. Bradley, W.V. Hook, Chas. Alexander and John Kesler. The body was interred in Rossville cemetery. Besides his widow he is survived by four children, Mrs. Ida Ayers, Magnolia, Texas; Ira T., and Fred E., Rossville and William B. of Topeka. | |
| 6413 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, Rebecca Mrs. J.T. Hopkins Died Monday Mrs. Rebecca Ellen Hopkins, widow of the late J.T. Hopkins, died at 5 o'clock Monday evening following a long illness. Since a stroke of paralysis last February she had been practically helpless and required the assistance of a caretaker. Mrs. Hopkins had been unconscious since Friday of last week and no hope was held out for any improvement in her condition. Her death was due to a number of complications. Mrs. Hopkins had been a resident of Kansas for the past fifty-nine years. She was a native of Zionville, Indiana, where she was born, Dec. 1, 1847, coming to Rossville township while a young woman. While living at Tecumseh she was united in marriage to Joseph Hopkins, March 16, 1870. Of the seven children born to this union four survive her. She united with the Baptist church in her girlhood but later affiliated with the Methodist church here. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2 p.m. and was attended by a great number of lifetime friends and neighbors. The service was conducted by Rev. Basquin. The songs sung at the service were the one selected by Mrs. Hopkins herself in planning the little services she preferred should be done following her death. Members of her family who survive are her daughter, Mrs. Ida Ayers, of Magnolia, Texas, and three sons, Ira T. of Rossville, Fred and William of Topeka. She is also survived by four half-sisters, Mrs. Frank Cooper of Eskridge, Mrs. Mina Wax of Maple Hill, Mrs. M.S. McElvain and Mrs. Delia Swearingen of Rossville; three half-brothers, James Heslet, Washington, D.C., Joseph Heslet, of Rossville, and Jacob Heslet, address unknown. Interment was made in Rossville cemetery in the family lot. | |
| 6414 |  | Obituary- Hopkins, William WILLIAM B. HOPKINS Wm. B. Hopkins, of 1127 Forest avenue, Topeka, died unexpectedly from a heart attack last Friday afternoon while visiting at the home of his son Ira, in another part of the city, 1214 Clay street. Mr. Hopkins was talking in front of the son’s home when he sank to the ground and was pronounced dead when he was carried into the house. Mr. Hopkins was a former member of the Topeka police force and for two years prior to becoming a policeman had served two years as a guard at the state penitentiary. He had spent practically all his life in the vicinity of Rossville prior to his removal to Topeka about 10 years ago. He was born at Rossville April 3, 1881, and at the date of his death was 48 years and 23 days old. During his boyhood, at the age of 15, he was converted end baptized in the Rossville Christian church. He was married to Millie Smith September 8, 1907, and five children were born to this union, all of whom are still living. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife and the five children, Ira, Thelma, Roy, Clarence and Floyd, all of the home address except Ira who is married and living in Topeka. He also is survived by one brother, Ira T. Hopkins of Rossville and one sister, Ida Ayers, Montell Texas; and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at Conwell’s Funeral Home at 8th and Quincy, Topeka, Monday. April 29, conducted by R. G. Anderson, of the Oakland Methodist church. Interment was in the Memorial cemetery. The following persons from here attended the funeral of William B. Hopkins in Topeka Monday afternoon: Mr. and Mrs. John Kinnett, Mr. and Mrs. E.D. He was a member of Lewisburg Church of God for 26 years, where he was Sunday school superintendent. He married Lula K. Brewer Horack. She preceded him in death in 1989. Mr. Horack is survived by a son, Kenneth E. Horack, Antioch, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Velma J. Horack, 79, Lewisburg, OH, died Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at Southern Hills Hospital in Nashville, TN, where he recently moved. He was born September 24, 1920, in Delia, the son of Ignatius and Veronica Hejtmanek Horak, who came to America from Czechoslovakia. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from McCall’s in Dayton, OH after 37 years of service. He was a faithful member of Lewisburg Church of God for 26 years, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent. He held many offices and duties in the church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lula K. Brewer Horack, in 1989; one sister, Rose Horak Davis; and one brother, Rudy Horack. Surviving him are a son, Kenneth Horack, Antioch, TX; two stepdaughters, Velma J. Pitts and Jeraldine Hutchison, both of Dayton, OH; two brothers, A1 Horack, Oakhurst, CA, and Edward’s twin, Bennie Horak, Delia; three sisters, Irene Collett, Camas, WA, Emily Dodge, Delia, and Esther Wehner, Rossville; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Horack, 76, who died July 30, 1992, in Bakersfield. A private interment was in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Mrs. Horack was born October 25, 1915, in Moorhead, Miss., and had been a resident of Taft and Bakersfield for the past 55 years. She was a member of Bakersfield’s First Assembly of God Church, where she taught the Bible for 25 years. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sis¬ter. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Rudy Earl Horack (who is the brother of Bennie Horak, Delia); two daughters, Earleen Yeary Dallas, Tex., and Sylvia Noble, Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Dennis Horack, Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters, six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She retired in 1965 from McCall Corp. in Dayton. She was a member of the Lewisburg Church of God. Survivors include her husband, Edward J. Horack; a son, Kenneth E. Horack, Lewisburg, Ohio; daughters, Velma J. He married Grace Simecka and moved to California in 1937. She preceded him in death. Albert is survived by one son, Larry Horak, Bakersfield, Ca.; three sisters, Irene Collett, Washingtn; Esther Wehner, Mesa, Az., and Emily Dodge, Delia; and a brother, Bennie Horak, Delia. Two brothers, Rudy Horak and Eddie Horak, and one sister, Rose, preceded him in death. Memorial services were held Thursday, Jan. 30 at Mountain Christian Center in Oakhurst. Mr. Horack was a former resident of Bakersfield. He worked as a maintenance and transportation supervisor for the Beardsley School in Bakersfield from 12959-1976. He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Horack of Oakhurst and his son, Larry Horack of Bakersfield. He was brother to Benny Horak, Esther Weiner (spelled incorrectly: correct spelling "Wehner") and Emily Dodge, all of Kansas and Irene Collett of Washington. | 6421 |  | Obituary- Horak, Benjamin 1 Benjamin F. ‘Bennie’ Horak Benjamin F. “Bennie” Horak, 92, passed away Nov. 27, 2012, at his home in Topeka. He was born Sept. 24, 1920, near Delia, the son of Ignac and Veronica Hejtmanek Horak. He attended Golden Rod Grade School and started farming for his father after his graduation. Bennie farmed all his life and started to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in 1961, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Delia Presbyterian Church. He was a member and past master of the Delia Masonic Lodge, the Delia High School Board and Local 307 of the United Rubber Workers. He was a charter member of the Delia Lions Club and had been a 4-H leader. Bennie had been a security guard at the Della missile site. Bennie farmed all of his life and worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber starting in 1961 and retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Delia Presbyterian Church. He was a member and past master of the Delia Masonic Lodge, the Delia High School Board of Education and Local Union No 307 United Rubber Workers. He was a charter member of the Delia Lions Club and had been a 4-H leader. Ben¬nie had been a security guard at the Delia Missile site. He later had an apparent cerebral hemorrhage. He was born Sept. 26, 1884, at Bilnz, Czechoslovakia, and lived in the United States since 1912. He lived in the Delia community about 60 years. He served in the Czechoslovakian Army in 1909. He was employed by Union Pacific Railroad 30 years before he retired in 1949. He later was a custodian at Delia Grade School eight years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Delia, Moravian Lodge No. 128, ZCBJ, Rossville, and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. He was married to Veronica Hejtmanek on Nov. 8, 1908, at Bratislav, Czechoslovakia. She died in November 1968. | 6429 |  | Obituary- Horton, Francis Francis Horton Corporal Francis Alberta Horton, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Horton was born June 27, 1895 at Corning, Kans., and was killed in action in the battle of the Argonne forest September 29 at the age of 23 years, 8 months and 2 days. Francis grew to manhood in Nemaha county and enlisted in the Holton militia May 1, 1915. After serving one and a half months on the Mexican border with Co. B of Holton he was honorably discharged August 5, 1910. When war was declared with Germany he volunteered his service for his country and re-enlisted May 28, 1917 with Co. B of Holton, was commissioned corporal July 16, 1918, received his training at Camp Doniphan, Okla., with the 85th division. The division was ordered to France in April and he was there 5 months and gave supreme sacrifice September 29, 1918. He united with the Christian church of Holton at the age of 20 years and was a member of the Dynamo class. He was a true and faithful Christian. Beside a host of friends and other relatives he leaves to mourn his loss, parents, six sisters and three brothers: Mrs. W.T. Thompson, of Corning, Kan; Mrs. J. L. Collectors Club, the KFHA (Kansas Fur Harvester Association) and a past member of the Delia Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Elsie, and a son, Kenneth R., both of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Hargis of Route 8 of Topeka and Mrs. Alta Owens of 803 Lindenwood, Topeka; three brothers, Howard and Ross of Delia and Alvah of Mountainberg, Arkansas. Funeral services were at 2 pm Monday at the Delia Presbyterian church, with burial in Delia cemetery. The Hurley funeral home of Rossville was in charge of arrangements. | |

A physician said Mr. Houck had a heart ailment and had an apparent heart attack while driving the truck. Ross Houck was born Sept. 2, 1892, near Delia and spent most of his life in the Delia community. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Emmett. He was a farmer. He was married to Thelma Mae Gilliland June 20, 1929. Besides his widow, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Lorraine Schlegel, Wheaton; two sons, Lindsay Houck, Delia, and Lanny Houck, Denver, Colo.; a brother, Howard Houck, Delia; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Hargis, 728 Saline, and Mrs. Alta Owens, 805 Lindenwood, both in Topeka, and 10 grandchildren. She was born on April 21, 1909, at Fairview, the daughter of Albert and Hattie Conger Gilliland. She had lived in the Delia community for many years. She was a member of the Emmett United Methodist Church. She married Ross J. Houck on June 20, 1929. He died on January 6, 1969. Survivors include two sons, Lindsay Houck, Delia, and Lanny Houck, Brighton, Colo.; a daughter, Lorraine Schlegel, Onaga; three brothers, Harvey Gilliland, Effingham, Everett Gilliland, Landcaster, and Edwin Gilliland, Atchison; 10 grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys. | 6443 |  | Obituary- Houghtoling, George Two Deaths From Pnemonia [sic] Rossville people have been made to realize that the influenza epidemic is a serious proposition and patients are beginning to realize that leaving their beds too quickly after the fever is broken, is a dangerous move. The deaths here this week were due at least in part, to premature activities after the patient began to feel better, with the result that pneumonia quickly developed and death occured within 48 hours. Besides the death of Jimmie Swinehart Monday night, Geo. Houghtoling, employed by L. P. Hartzell, died Wednesday. Mr. Houghtaling is comparatively a stranger here, coming here early in the summer and working thru most of the haying season with G. M. McPherson. Mr. Houghtoling was known better to his fellow workmen as “Shorty” and was a reliable, hardworking man. His brother living in Barber County was notified of his death and interment will be made in the Rossville cemetery. | |
| 6444 |  | Obituary- House, Eliza ELIZA HANNAH HOUSE was born July 16, 1854, near Sullivan, Ind., and died Nov. 10, 1938, in Delia, at the home of her only son, Chas. House. In 1871, on September 10th, she was united in marriage to William House near Sullivan, Indiana. Mr. Chas. House, Delia, is only surviving child of this union. The family removed to Jackson County, Kansas, residing on a farm near Delia in 1912 and later moved into Delia in 1914. The father and husband, passed away some years ago. The deceased is survived by her only son, Charles House, four grandchildren, Charles William House, Lincoln, Neb.; Fred House, of the home; Mrs. Rosanna Bartley of the home; and Mrs. Bessie Massey, Lincoln, Neb.; all were present for the funeral service. There are also five great grandchildren. Eliza Hannah House lived an extended life, being 84 years, 3 months and 14 days of age. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church of Delia on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 10 a. m. Rev. Bruce Davis, officiating. Interment was in the Delia cemetery. | |
| 6445 |  | Obituary- House, George George House dies after long illness George W. House, 60, a Topeka and Rossville grocer for 30 years, died Monday at his home in Rossville. He and his wife, Mary, owned and operated a grocery at 6th and Monroe until five years ago, when they moved to Rossville to operate a store here. Mr. House, who also farmed near Rossville and Silver Lake was the owner of a lodge at Spicner, Minn. He was a member of Methodist Church, Hesperian Lodge No. 111, AF & AM, and Lions Club of Rossville, and the Topeka Elks Lodge. He was born July 17, 1902 in Tecumseh. Survivors include his widow and a son, George Jr., both at home; his mother, Mrs. Bertha M. House, Route 4, Topeka; a brother, John, Valley Falls, and two sister, Mrs. Bertha Moseley, Nevada, Missouri, and Mrs. Mae Jury, Plattsburg, Mo. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Rossville Methodist Church. Burial Services were at Rossville Cemetery. The Parker Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. | |
| 6446 |  | Obituary- Housh, Russell RUSSELL L. HOUSH Russell L. Housh, 48, Silver Lake, died Wednesday, February 11, 1981, at a Topeka hospital. He suffered an apparent heart attack. Mr. Housh was principal of Silver Lake Elementary School. He also taught and coached at Onaga High School from 1961 until 1968, and was principal at Glasco schools from 1968 until 1974. He was born November 6, 1932, at Winchester, the son of Roy and Lucy Edmonds Housh. He was graduated from Oskaloosa High School, Washburn University, Topeka, in 1961 and from Kansas State University, Manhattan, in 1966. He had lived at Silver Lake since 1974. He was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist Church and the Boy Scout committee. He was a Navy veteran, and served from 1952 until 1960. He married Marie Hiebsch February 26, 1960, at Oskaloosa. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Roy Housh and Tony Housh, both of the home; and a sister, Mrs. Beth Williams, Hoyt. Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday at Silver Lake United Methodist Church. Graveside services were at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Wise Cemetery, Winchester. Later memorial services were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Silver Lake Elementary School auditorium. Parker-Price Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. | 6447 |  | Obituary- Howard, Chettie 1 Rossville Reporter, April 23, 1942, page 8: Chettie A. Howard Chettie A. Stanley was born August 14, 1851, in South Shaftsbury, Vermont. Her parents were Joseph and Jane Fuller Stanley. She had a brother, Lansing, who died when a small child. She spent her childhood in Vermont.On October 1, 1869, she was married to D.W. Howard, of Shaftsbury, Vermont. Hearing of good opportunities in the West, Mr. Howard made several trips to Kansas to see for himself. In 1872 they decided to move to Kansas. They arrived in Rossville April 14, and went immediately to the site of the home where Mrs. Howard continued to live her lifetime.Mrs. Howard's cousins, the Martin Smith family, of which Cassius Smith is the only surviving member in the community, also came with them and settled on the farm adjoining them.Mrs. Howard was a member of the Baptist Church of Rossville, but transferred her membership to the Methodist Church when the services were discontinued in the Baptist Church. She was active in church organizations and the Literary Society. She also was a member of Amaryllis Chapter of Eastern Star, serving as Chaplain of that organization for many years. She also was a member of the Topeka Chapter of D.A.R."Aunt Chettie" as she was known to relatives and friends alike, was a very kind and thoughtful person, endearing herself to all who knew her in her quiet unassuming way. Many nieces and nephews made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Howard. The following lived with them a number of years: Olive Howard, Howard Moseley, Jed, Otis and Rufus Hoard; Mary Stiles, Lula Moseley Pendleton, David Stiles, John Cahill, Fern and Warren Pendleton. She has one cousin living, Frank Fuller of North Bennington, Vermont. She leaves many nieces and nephews of Mr. Howard's family.Aunt Chettie passed away April 16 following a sudden illness.Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, April 19, at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wright Horton, of Frankfort, Kansas officiating. He was assisted by Rev. C.P. Broadfoot.Music was furnished by a mixed quartette including Mrs. N.G. Moody, Mrs. C.P. Broadfoot, Mr. Moody and Kenneth Broadfoot, with Mrs. Irene Campbell, accompanist.Pallbearers were Messrs. Frank Page, C.E. Van Vleck, Guy Startup, C.E. Gresser, Morris Bond and Elmer Stewart.Burial was in the family lot in Rossville Cemetery.(followed by a list of 34 relatives left to mourn; followed by another list of 29 couples and singles who attended the services from out of town.) | |

| 6449 |  | Obituary- Howard, Clarissa 1 Mrs. Clarissa C. Howard died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.G. Griswold, Sunday, April 28th. She had been in failing health for some time and owing to her age was unable to rally to treatment and kind care. She was born March 31st, 1837 in Shaftsbury, Vermont, and was therefore 75 years and 28 days old at the time of her death. She was married January 28th, 1868 to Otis Howard of South Shaftsbury, Vt. Of this union three children were born, Zoa Louise, Eliphalet and Nettie H., two of whom survive her, her husband having died October 17th, 1899. They came to Rossville in 1889 and she has lived here ever since.The funeral was held Tuesday at 2 o'clock at the house, Rev. C.B. Chatfield officiating and the remains laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery. Mrs. Howard led a quiet, unassuming life, devoted to her family and friends. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of the entire community. | |
