| 6501 |  | Obituary- Hudson, Wesley Wesley Raymond Hudson Wesley Raymond Hudson, 93, Rossville, died late Tuesday, May 23, 1989, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Hudson was employed by Santa Fe Railway before he retired in 1946. He then owned and operated Hudson Saw Shop in Rossville before he retired in 1982. He was born March 3, 1896, in Jefferson County, the son of James William and Martha Adeline Hamlin Hudson. He spent most of his life in Rossville. He was a veteran of World War I, having served in France. He was married to Loma Barbara Landis May 20, 1922. She died Jan. 17, 1977. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Hays and Shirley Rae Hudson, both of Topeka; two sons, Duane M. Hudson, Topeka, and Larry L. Hudson, Rossville; a sister, Elsie Hamm, Holton; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home. Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville will conduct graveside services at Silver Lake Cemetery. Mr. Hudson is in state at the funeral home where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. today. | |

Huerter GOFF — Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Holton for Clarence Paul Huerter, 84, Goff, who died Saturday, Aug. 13, 1994, at a nursing home in Holton. He was born May 14, 1910, in Seneca, the son of Herman and Pauline Roeder Huerter. He was graduated from Sts. Peter and. Paul High School in Seneca. He lived in the Seneca community before he moved to Goff in 1937. He had worked with the Works Progress Administration in Seneca and was a farmer and stockman many years. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Wetmore. He was married to Frances Anna Broxterman Feb. 4, 1932, in Baileyville. She survives. A grandson, Brad Glassel, died June 11, 1985. Other survivors include three daughters, Cletamae Brown, Holton, Darlene Glassel, Valley Falls, and Gladys Parnell, Rossville; two brothers, Fabian Huerter, Milo, Iowa, and Norbert Huerter, Seneca; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grand-children. Burial will be in Wetmore Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. | 6503 |  | Obituary- Huerter, Frances Frances Anna Huerter GOFF — Frances Anna Huerter, 88, Goff, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at a Holton nursing home. Mrs. Huerter and her husband farmed. She also worked for the Slimaker Dress Factory in the 1950s and 1960s. She was born Sept. 19,1909, at Baileyville, the daughter of Frank and Gertrude Koehler Broxterman. She had lived in the Goff and Wetmore area since 1937. Mrs. Huerter was a member of St. James Catholic Church at Wetmore and the Altar Society at the church. She married Clarence Paul Huerter on Feb. 4,1932, at Baileyville. He died Aug. 13, 1994. Mrs. Huerter also was preceded in death by a grandson, Brad Glassel, June 11, 1985. Survivors include three daughters, Cletamae Brown, Holton, Darlene Glassel, Valley Falls, and Gladys Parnell, Rossville; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton. Burial will be in Wetmore Cemetery. Mrs. Huerter will lie in state at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton until 9 a.m. Friday and after 9:15 a.m. Friday at the church. Huffman, 92, Garden City, formerly of Washington, who died Friday, March 20, 1993, at a Garden City nursing home. She was born Aug. 28, 1900, in Washington, the daughter of William and Marie Barbara Weimman Lee. She was a member of the Christian Church in Washington. She was married to Thomas E. Huffman, March 21, 1926, in Hayworth, Kan. He died Nov. 11, 1943. Survivors include a son, Thomas Huffman, Marysville; eight daughters, Janet Hollmann, Willamina, Ore., Cora Rahe, Hiawatha, Betty Boerger, Beatrice, Neb., Doris Szopenske, Marysville, Barbara Madsen, McMinnville, Ore., Karen Hildebrant, Rossville, Donis Woods, Garden City, and Sharon Werner, Washington; a sister, Edith Lightner, Solomon; 23 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Enosdale Cemetery southwest of Washington. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. | |
| 6505 |  | Obituary- Huffman, Helen Helen E. Huffman Helen E. Huffman, Rossville, 64, left us for her eternal home on July 26, 2006. She was born December 12, 1941 at Bremerton, Washington, the daughter of George J. and Thora V. Parr Stadler. Mrs. Huffman grew up on the family farm outside of Rossville and graduated from Rossville High School in 1959. She spent over 30 years in the banking business. Helen is a member of the Rossville Christian Church where she has been actively involved for decades. On February 21, 1975, Helen was united in marriage to Robert R. Huffman, Rossville. He survives at the home. Other survivors are her children Scott Gillum and his wife Colleen of Maple Hill, Kimberly Gillum of Rossville, and Cathy Haines of Topeka. She also is survived by four beautiful grandchildren, Macy, Laura, Malcolm and Briar Gillum. Helen’s mother, Thora Stadler, survives as does her three siblings, David Stadler and his wife Phyllis, Jim Stadler and his wife Warrene, and Rose Brown and her husband, Fred, and many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her father, George Stadler on September 17, 2004 and her twin baby sisters, Frances and Margaret Stadler on April 21,1947. Words cannot express what a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend Helen was. Helen truly treasured and enjoyed her time spent with family and friends, her church family and her duplicate bridge groups. Memorial services will be 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at the Rossville Cemetery. She was born February 3,1919, at Elbing, the daughter of Daniel J. and Nora Jane Hart Tipton. She was reared in Burlington and moved to Topeka in 1938. Mrs. Huffman was employed by Sears for over 20 years before she retired. She had bowled in several Topeka leagues for many years. Mrs. Huffman was an avid Kansas City Royals fan. He married John Allen Huffman on November 16, 1935 at Yates Center. He died June 1, 1987. Survivors include two sons, Robert R. Huffman, Rossville, and Billy G. Huffman, San Benito, TX; one daughter, Faye Maher, Mustang, OK, one sister, Celia Fleming, Rancho Cuchamunga, CA; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Her service was Thursday at the Parker-Price Mortuary, Topeka. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. | 6509 |  | Obituary- Huffman, Robert 2 Robert R. Huffman October 22, 2013 Rossville-Robert R. Huffman, 75, died Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at a Topeka Hospital. Bob was born May 31, 1938 at Burlington, the son of John Allen and Louise Ethel Tipton Huffman. He graduated from Topeka High School and served in the Kansas Army National Guard. Mr. Huffman worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Topeka for many years. He was a Life Master Bridge player playing twice a week and daily on his computer up until his death. Bob was an avid bowler and bowled in leagues from 1967 until 1995. He was involved in Super Stock racing for 30 years. He loved anything fast enjoying motorcycles and ATV’s. He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. Bob had served on the Rossville City Council. On February 27, 1975 he was united in marriage to Helen E. Stadler Gillum at Rossville. She preceded him in death on July 26, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Haines, Topeka, a stepson, Scott (Colleen) Gillum, Rossville; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Gillum, Rossville; his brother, Bill (Linda) Huffman Topeka; his sister, Celia Faye Maher, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Macy, Laura, Malcolm and Briar all of Rossville, and his special friend, Linda Hudson, Burlington. | 6510 |  | Obituary- Huffmier, Tina Tina Marie (Stum) Huffmier Passes Away Carbondale-Tina Marie (Stum) Huffmier, 56, passed away Friday, January 17, 2020, at the House at Midland Care in Topeka. Tina grew up in the Rossville community, where she attended school. She was grateful to have had the opportunity to live with the Don and Marilene Stockman family as a teenager. They became her “adoptive family. Don preceded her in death. Tina was the mother of four daughters. She was a lover of animals and had worked at the Stonehouse Veterinary Clinic in Topeka. She had a special love for horses. Tina later worked as an eligibility specialist for Maxius in Topeka. Among survivors are her four daughters; a brother, Wilbur (Sis) Stum, Wabaunsee County; her lifelong friend, Marty (Stockman) Johnson, Rossville and her “Mother” Marilene Stockman, Rossville. A Memorial Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at Piper Funeral Home from 5:00 until 6:00 P.M. Inurnment will be at a later date. She was born July 19,1926, in Delia, Kan., the daughter of Harry and Frances Murry. She married Woodrow W. Huffstutler on July 23,1945. Survivors include a son, Joe Huffstutler, Mayetta; a brother, Robert M. Murry, Topeka; and a sister, Roberta Vande Velde, Topeka. He was born the son of Joseph V. and Muriel M. Huggins on Sept 13th, 1941 in San Antonio, TX. He served in the Navy from 1960 to 1964. She was born July 19, 1909, in Enterprise, the daughter of Fred and Alice Kuhn Merillat. She lived in Delia until she went to Topeka in 1984. She graduated from Washburn University and received a Master’s Degree from Emporia University. Mrs. Huggins taught school in Delia, Emmett and Rossville high schools for 28 years. She studied in Mexico during summers and supervised a student trip one year. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Delia, where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the Quilters Group. She was a member of the Extension Homemakers Unit at Delia and the Carpenter’s Auxiliary #95 at Topeka. She was married to Joseph V. Huggins, July 18, 1929 in Lawrence. He preceded her in death. | 6516 |  | Obituary- Huggins, Travis Travis Lee Huggins Travis Lee Huggins died March 15,2017. Travis was born in Topeka on April 3,1976, the son of Jim and Evelyn (Lang) Huggins. He graduated from Seaman High School in 1594 and attended Washburn University. He loved loud music and fast cars. Travis lived life in the fast lane! Survivors include his children: Brice Huggins, Damien Huggins, Zyte Huggins, Maren Peterson, all of Topeka and Haleigh Peterson of Lawrence; his mother, Evelyn Huggins of Topeka; his brother Garrett (Dawn) Huggins and nephew Gunnar Lewis all of Topeka; his birth mother Vickie Zeit Diveley of Severance, Kansas; ex-wife Becki Davis of Topeka; and his grandmother Janice Zeit of Denton, Kansas. Travis was preceded in death by his father Jim Huggins, his grandfathers Dick Zeit and Elmer Lang and his grandmother Muriel Huggins. At Travis’ request, he was a transplant donor. Travis had a kind heart and he greatly loved his children. A memorial service will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery and Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Topeka, KS, on Monday, March 27, 2017 1:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at noon prior to the service. | 6517 |  | Obituary- Hughes, George George Hughes Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church for George Lee Hughes, 66, Topeka. He died Thursday, Oct. 31,2002, at a Rossville nursing home. Mr. Hughes owned and operated Hughes Tax Service for 45 years. He also farmed part time from 1958 to 2002 in the Goff and Soldier communities. He had been a business teacher at Havensville and at Highland Community College. He taught business and computer at Capital City High School in Topeka. He had been a principal, teacher and coach at Soldier Grade School and at Havensville Grade School, where he also was the Title I director. He was an elementary principal and business teacher at the Kickapoo Nation School in Powhattan, and he had been principal at Overbrook Elementary School. Mr. Hughes also was a census taker for the U.S. Census Bureau, and he was co-owner of the Sunflower Supports Co. for the past three years. He was born Jan. 1,1936, in Bancroft, the son of George and Anna Pauline Denning Hughes. He graduated from Wetmore High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business in 1958 and a master’s degree in school administration in 1964, both from Emporia State University. He measured ground for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service during the summers while tie was a student. He moved to Topeka in 1987. Mr. Hughes was a member of Pi Omega Pi honorary business fraternity and Phi Delta Kappa honorary administrators fraternity, both at Emporia State University. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon at ESU, the National Association of Elementary Principals, Kansas Association of Elementary Principals, a life member of the National Education Association, and past president of both the Pottawatomie County Teachers Association and the Cheyenne Conference of the Principals Association. He married Lena Lou Rogers in Wetmore in 1957. They were divorced. He married MaryAnn Channel on Feb. 18,1983. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Robert Lee Hughes, Overland Park, Kevin E. Hughes, Lawrence, and George “Jim’’ Hughes, Topeka; a daughter, M. Leann Dickson, Lawrence; and eight grandchildren. Burial will be at St. Augustine Cemetery at Fidelity. She married Fred Hundertfund December 18, 1912, at Topeka. He died August 1,1939. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Betty Mauer, in 1964, and three sons, Merle Hundertfund, in 1978, Allen H. Hundertfund, in 1968, and Fred Hundertfund, in 1937. She was born in Wamego, Kansas March 18, 1922. The daughter of R.K. and Lorene Ince, she graduated from Wamego High School and Cosmetology School in Topeka. Virginia married W.E. “Bus” Hundley in San Diego, California June 1, 1943. They had two children Sharon and Gary. Virginia worked at the Department of Agriculture in Hiawatha for thirty-three years. She was an avid bridge player, belonging to many bridge clubs, was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star Zenith Chapter 184, NARFE and First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. She loved to sew. Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her daughter Sharon A. and Jim Kenney, son Gary L. Hundley both of Topeka, sister Peggy Elder Wamego, grandson Shawn Lucas and Amy, great grandchildren Cole and Josie Lucas all of Topeka, step grandson J.D. and Kelli Kenney and step great grandchildren Jimmy, Parker and Maddie Kenney of Rossville. Harrison, street, Topeka, died in a Neodesha, Kan., hospital Monday morning from injuries received in a leap from a motor car about 10 miles south of Neodesha, last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Hunt was returning to Topeka in a motor car driven by her husband, A. B. Hunt, when, the foot feed on the car became jammed and the car started down a steep hill, according to word received by her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Dunbar, of the home address. Although the husband snapped off the switch, Mrs. Hunt, badly frightened, leaped from the car. She suffered a fractured skull and other injuries which caused her death. The car was brot to a standstill Without damage to the machine. Mrs. Hunt was taken to a Neodesha hospital. Mrs. Hunt for about two weeks had been at the bedside of a daughter. Mrs. Lula Smith, who has been seriously ill with pneumonia south of Neodesha. Her husband went after her Friday and was returning to Topeka with her and another daughter, Mrs. May McGuire, at the time of the accident. Besides her husband and her three daughters, she is survived by three sons, Archie Matthews, Kansas City. Kan.; Frank Matthews. Parsons; and Cash Matthews, Wichita. The body was brought to Topeka for burial. | |
| 6530 |  | Obituary- Hunt, T.N. T.N. Hunt Dead T.N. Hunt, brother of A.B. Hunt, died this morning at 9:45 after an illness dating from November 25. Mr. Hunt came to Rossville the day before Thanksgiving from his home at Lincoln, Neb., for a visit with his brother. He was feeling unwell at the time of his arrival. Pneumonia later set in and the end came this morning. The date for the funeral has not been set, but interment will be made in the Maple Hill cemetery. Mr. Hunt was 58 years old. He leaves two small children, who are being cared for by relatives in Nebraska, to mourn his loss. T.N. Hunt was born in White Side county, Illinois, on July 1, 1856, died December 10, 1914, being 58 years, 5 months and 9 days old at the time of his death. For many years he was employed on various railroads of the country until about two years ago when he gave up railroading and took up other work. On November 25 he came to Rossville to visit with his brother, A.B. Hunt. Being ill when he came he rapidly grew worse from the ravages of pneumonia and suffered intensely until the end came. He is survived by two children one girl 18 years old and one son 8 years old and one brother and three sisters. The funeral was held Monday, December 14 at the M.E. church in Rossville and interment was made in the Maple Hill cemetery. | |

He was born June 2, 2000 in Topeka, the son of Christopher and Angela (Parnell) Hurla. He was a graduate of Rossville High School in 2018 and earned his electrical technology certificate from Washburn Institute of Technology in 2019. He was currently employed at PTMW, Inc. as an electrician. Holden was known by all those that associated with him as a person with a huge heart, a great sense of humor, and a friend to anyone that he met. In high school, his quiet demeanor gave way to his strong work ethic that led him to becoming a three-time state wrestling qualifier, a member of three state championship football teams, and a successful long-distance runner on the track team qualifying for state two years. He was a member of National Honor Society, Future Farmers of America, and was a top ten student academically. He was a talented woodworker with the vision to create intricate and unique designs of his own, and his creativity allowed him to produce a variety of wood and art projects. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He grew up as a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church where he was a server during mass, participated in youth group activities and was a current member of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by an Uncle Jamie Hurla. Holden is survived by his parents, Christopher and Angela Hurla of Delia; his brothers, Layne and Colby and his sister Kendra, all of the home. He also leaves his maternal grandparents, Charles Parnell, Topeka, Gladys Parnell, Rossville; his paternal grandparents, Myron and Kathy Hurla, Paxico; 17 Aunts and Uncles, and 65 cousins. Mr. Hurla was a heavy-equipment operator who worked out of Operating Engineers Union Local No.101. He later worked for the City of Topeka Street Department. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was born March 19, 1921, in Delia, the son of Michael and Elizabeth Salisbury Hurla. Mr. Hurla was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Nocturnal Adoration Society. He was married to Phyllis Ann Boyer Aug. 6, 1953, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline. She died July 30, 1982. She was born March 26,1920 at Kingman, Kansas the daughter of Frank B. and Winifred E. Stearns Ross. She was raised at Kingman and graduated from Kingman High School in 1938. She worked with her husband as an assistant funeral director for 17 years at funeral homes in Harveyville, Rossville and Galena. She was married to John H. Hurley at Kingman on Feb. 11, 1939. John preceded her in death on May 29, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her son Roger in 2003; her infant daughter in 1939, Janice A. and a grandson, Douglas Hudson in 1990. She is survived by her daughters Linda Hudson of Rossville and Denise Hurley of Kansas City, Missouri; two grandsons, Gregory Hudson of Rossville and John Miller of Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Nona Droegemeier of Rossville and Phyllis Kostner of Murdock, Kansas Two nieces, two nephews and one great-niece also survive. Funeral services will be held at the Davidson Funeral Home at 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 29, 2006. Interment will follow in the Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Hurley was a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Kansas and Missouri. He had worked for one year at Sleeper Mortuary in Iola and owned and operated funeral homes in Harveyville, Galena and Rossville. He later was employed by Meierhoffer-Fleeman Funeral Home in St. Joseph, Mo., until he retired in 1975 for health reasons. In later years he operated Hurley’s Used Cars in Rossville. He was born Nov. 28, 1916, at Moran, the son of Roy Thomas and Edith Prettyman Hurley. He moved to Iola in 1929 when his father was Allen County sheriff and was graduated from Iola High School in 1935. He attended Iola Junior College one year and was graduated from Williams Institute of Embalming in Kansas City, Kan., in 1937. He lived in Rossville from 1952 until 1962 and returned to Rossville in 1978. Mr. Hurley was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rossville and a former member of various civic clubs. He was married to Betsy Ross Feb. 11, 1939 in Kingman. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Linda Hudson, Rossville, and Mrs. Denise Millet, Kirksville, Mo.; a son, Roger Hurley, Silver Lake; his mother, Mrs. Edith Hurley, Rossville; and three grand¬sons. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Rossville. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. | 6550 |  | Obituary- Hurley, Roger Roger Hurley ROSSVILLE — Roger Allen Hurley, 57, Rossville, formerly of Wichita, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at a Rossville nursing home of cancer caused by exposure to the chemical Agent Orange. Mr. Hurley for eight years was a manager for P.N. Hirsh Stores in Kansas and Missouri. He had worked as a car salesman for Ed Bozarth and Laird Noller in Topeka. He also had worked for Western Uniform in Wichita before retiring for health reasons. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He also served in Japan, Okinawa, Thailand and Korea. He earned the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was born Aug. 14,1945, in Pratt, to John H. and Betsy C. Ross Hurley. He was raised in Harveyville and Rossville until moving to Galena, where he graduated from high school in 1963. He attended Pittsburg State University. He had lived in Wichita before moving to Rossville recently. Mr. Hurley was a member of Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his mother, Betsy Hurley, Rossville; and two sisters, Linda Hudson, Rossville, and Denise Hurley, Kansas City, Mo. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Burial will be at Rossville Cemetery in Rossville.
