PAUL F. MATYAK

Paul Frank Matyak, 93, formerly of Delia, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Clare Bridge in Topeka.

He was born March 18, 1919, on the family farm near Carter, S.D., the son of Paul and Marie Lucy Dolezilek Matyak. He graduated from Curlew School in South Dakota. After school he worked on the family farm until 1937 when he moved to Delia.

When he arrived in Delia at the age of 18, he started work as the manager of the Farmers Elevator, which was owned by his uncle, Frank Matyak. In 1939, after moving the rest of the family from South Dakota, Paul’s dad purchased the Delia Lumber Co., next to the elevator. Paul became the manager of the lumber yard, working in both of these positions until he was drafted into the U.S. Army on April 20, 1942.

His military career took him from Fort Leavenworth to Camp Hood, Texas, to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., before he was shipped overseas. His unit embarked to England on Sept. 13, 1944, having served in the European Theater, which took him to Holland and then on to Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge towards the end of the war in 1945. He journeyed back across the ocean on the Queen Mary and arrived in New York City on July 2, 1945, returning to Delia on July 11, 1945, which was just two weeks before his wedding. Paul was honorably discharged from the Army at San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Oct. 21, 1945. His military awards included the American Service Medal, World War Il Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Purple Heart.

Paul married Genevieve C. Grace on July 26, 1945 in Delia. In that same year, Paul and Genevieve bought their first home and a building on Main Street in Delia, where he started his business, Matyak’s Garage.

Paul and Genevieve were married 51 years and raised six children: Paul J., Edward, Dorothy, Roxann, Richard, and Monica. He retired from Matyak’s Garage in 1990 after 45 years in the business. Paul was a man of the upmost integrity and stuck to his moral grounds no matter the subject. He was not afraid to voice his opinion. Many friends and customers will remember stopping by Matyak’s Garage and discussing the news topics of the day. There are many memories of Paul helping neighbors or friends in need, anytime day or night. Paul and Genevieve shared many wonderful memories with friends including dances at the Bohemian Hall, where often their dancing would make others stop and stand back to watch. Paul and Genevieve appreciated their many great memories with their friends of so many years.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve and son, Paul J. in August 1996, his parents, two brothers: Frank and Joe Matyak.

He is survived by five children, Ed (Kathy) Matyak, and Dorothy (Eldon) Fastrup of Topeka, Roxie (David) Fath of Tecumseh, Rick (Melody) Matyak of Delia, Monica (Jay) Steiner of Olathe; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Lydia Anderson of Topeka; and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary- Maxwell, Samuel
S.B. Maxwell Dead

Samuel B. Maxwell died at his home, 626 Merchant street Tuesday morning Oct. 22, at 10:10 o'clock. His death was due to a tumor on the brain, of which malady he had been suffering for some time. The heat of the past summer had aggravated and made his suffering more intense. He had been seriously ill for the past month, but was not confined to the bed continuously until ten days ago.

Mr. Maxwell was born in Sydney, Ohio, April 26, 1844. After his marriage to Miss Rebecca Fathenstock, in 1861, he left his work in a mill owned by his uncle joined in the army and served six months in the war. Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell came to Emporia over twenty years ago. The first sixteen years of his life in Emporia was spent as a miller in Soden's mill, making a total of forty-five years at this work. Six years ago he quit the mill work and entered into the dairy business east of Emporia, on Logan Avenue. He conducted this business one year, and then moved to Emporia and engaged in a milk and ice cream business. This business was discontinued last January. Mr. Maxwell was a man of wide acquaintance and had been a respected citizen all of his life. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Emporia and always had been interested in church work. He was a member the A.O.U.W., the Degree of Honor, the Fraternal Union, and of Plumb Post, No. 55.

The members of the family surviving Mr. Maxwell are Mrs. Maxwell and their children, Mrs. Jennie Nicholas, of Wichita; Mrs. Cora Kelley, of Emporia; Mrs. Lola Cain, of Denver, and Web Maxwell, of Montana. - Emporia Gazette

Mr. Maxwell is remembered by many of the older settlers here as he moved from here to Emporia more than twenty-five years ago. While a citizen of Rossville he conducted the old City hotel that then stood where the Chas. Boyles residence now is, back of the McPherson livery barn. He was also in partnership with Mr. Close in the old rock flouring mill now run by Chas. Fritz as an elevator. At that time the mill did a flourishing business making flour.

Widely Known Retied Joplin Railroad Man Had Been With Missouri Pacific 43 Years
Edward McCoy McAdams, for 43 years an employee of the Missouri Pacific railroad in Joplin, died at his home 2120 Pennsylvania avenue, at 9:40 o’clock Wednesday morning (July 31), following a six months’ illness. He was 73 years old.

Mr. McAdams had served railroads of the middle west for nearly 55 years, beginning as a young man in Rossville, Kansas, in 1887. His career included adventurous service with pioneering lines, before beginning his long employment with the Missouri Pacific.

Suffered Paralytic Stroke
He suffered a paralytic stroke in January, and was a patient in the Missouri Pacific hospital in St. Louis for several weeks. About three months ago he showed improvement, but recently suffered a relapse.

He was retired May 1 as passenger agent here for the Missouri Pacific. Mr. McAdams came to Joplin as a cashier for the Missouri Pacific railroad in January, 1896. In 1901 he was made city and traveling passenger agent and in 1906 was promoted to city passenger and freight agent, which position he held continuously until his retirement.

He resigned to take a position with the Texas and Pacific railroad at Colorado and Abilene, Tex., later going to the Indian Territory to work for the M.-K.-T. railroad and the Choctaw Coal and Railway Company.

In January, 1894, Mr. McAdams went to Nevada as cashier of the M.-K.-T. While there he shared offices with the Missouri Pacific and was offered the cashiership of the Poplin office.

Obituary.

Margaret McAdams was born at Rossville November 16th, 1872. She passed on to her reward there at the home of her parents, November 29th, and was laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery, December 1st, 1905.

The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. C.A. Finch of the First Christian Church of Topeka officiating. He was assisted by Rev. H.L. Nelson, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, and also by his quartet choir from Topeka. Sometime before, Margaret had selected the songs, "Home of the Soul" and "Nearer my God to Thee," requesting the choir to sing them feeling that she was singing with them, as she had done many times in the past year in their church in Topeka. The minister chose his text from the 20th chapter of Numbers, and first verse: "And Miriam died there, and was buried there." He spoke of the similarity of Margaret's life to that of Miriam, in that she began to serve the Lord in youth and continued in his service all her life. He also likened her leadership gift of song to Miriam when she took her "Timbre! and led the Israelites in their song of victory." Margaret had been in close fellowship with his Church work for the last year and his personal acquaintance enabled him to speak words of comfort to her family and friends concerning her life and character.

The Rev. H.L. Nelson spoke of his acquaintance with her, and the uplift which her association inspired. He told of his talk with her when she arranged for her funeral. At that time she said was ready to go, but dreaded passing through the dark valley. "You will not be alone, Jesus will be your light," he said to her. "Oh yes," she said, her countenance lighting up at the thought.

Many loving tributes of flowers from friends far and near were banked about the casket. Robed in pure white she lay "Asleep in Jesus," with one hand holding a cluster of flowers.

The spacious Church was filled with friends who knew and loved her.

having united with the Christian Church when a child of 12 years old. She lived a consistent Christian and had grown to a consecrated womanhood in the community. She was of a genial sunny disposition making and holding many friends wherever she went.

She was an earnest worker in the church in all its departments, capable and willing to do whatever the call, serving at different times in all the offices of the C.E. Society. As Superintendent, Teacher or Choirster of the Sabbath School or leader of the prayer meeting she was equally at home.

She was a teacher of ability in both instrumental and vocal music, her voice in song was ever ready for the Master's use, or for the entertainment of friends. Sadly she will be missed but the example of her life and the work she has done will remain to inspire others to follow in the paths she trod.

Margaret had been failing in health for about eighteen months and for the last five months had been confined to her bed from cancerous growth and paralysis on the lower limbs.

Obituary- McAdams, Margaret 3
Obituary- McAdams, Margaret 3
She was patient in her suffering endeavoring to cheer her family and her friends by her hopefulness of getting wed. She knew her case was very certain and expected a willing submission to the Lord, and yet she had an intense desire to live that she might do more and better work for Jesus. The young people of Rossville were the burden of her thoughts; she longed that they might all be saved. She often said "Mama, why is it that I have to lie here and suffer when I would so love to be at work for my Master, and see so many thoughtless girls walking the streets for pastime, when there is so much to do?"

A few days before her death she began to fail and on Tuesday grew rapidly worse and said, "Mamma I will have to give up, I cannot live."

The family physician was called but could give no relief and shortly after twelve o'clock on the morning of November 29th, her spirit went home to be forever with the Lord.

Margaret has gone to Jesus her light.
Her spirit has taken its flight
But her pleading voice is calling still
Come, come! Whosoever will, whosoever will!
