| 9501 |  | Obituary- Sebring, Addie Addie May Sebring Addie May Sebring was born Aug. 6, 1895, and died August 17, 1935, at the age of 40 years and 11 days. She graduated from Rossville high school in 1913, and followed this with several years as a teacher in rural schools and in the local high school. In 1924 she went to California. She attended school and later taught in the University high school, Oakland, California. She has had trouble with her ears for several years. A number of operations had failed to help them and it finally led to her death. A beautiful young life, she united with the United Brethren church north of Rossville, as a girl. Her one great goal was to help others and her field of special interest was young people. All who have known her speak highly of her character, and her ability as a teacher and leader was a natural gift. The body was cremated and the ashes brought to Rossville for interment last Saturday afternoon. The service was held at the cemetery, in charge of Rev. Horton. The urn, on a beautiful satin couch was carried by four girls in White, Ruth Whearty, Anita Lemon, Bonnie Janke and Marjorie Janke. Two hymns were sung by a ladies’ quartet which included Mrs. Peter Navarre, Mrs. A.G. Wallerstedt, Mrs. W.M. Horton and Evelyn Landis. The poem, “Thanatopsis,” by William Cullen Bryant was read for its message of courage, confidence and comfort in the face of death. May Sebring Miss May Sebring of San Francisco, Calif., died at Stanford University hospital, August 17, 1935, at the age of 40. She was born near Rossville, Kansas, August 6, 1895. Funeral services were held at the Memorial Chapel of Carew and English Masonic at Golden Gate avenue, San Francisco, and inurnment at Cypress Lawn cemetery. For the past eleven years she had been a teacher of English in the University high school at Oakland. She had previously taught at Fremont high school. Oakland school heads said her work had been outstanding. Left to mourn her passing are mother, Mrs. Arville Sebring; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Janke, of Junction City; and two brothers, Glenn Sebring, of Morrowville, Kansas, and Harold Sebring of Grenville, New Mexico. Notice of Memorial Service Saturday, November 16, at 2:30 p.m. at Rossville cemetery in memory of May Sebring. May Sebring Dead Mr. and Mrs. Austin Sebring received a sad message last Saturday, of the death of Miss May Sebring at Berkley, Calif., on Saturday, Aug. 17. Miss Sebring is the daughter of Mrs. Arvilla Sebring now of Morrowville. Miss Sebring is a graduate of Rossville high school. After teaching in Rossville grade school and a couple of years at Valley Falls, she went to Berkley, Calif., about twelve years ago. | |
| 9502 |  | Obituary- Sebring, Austin AUSTIN SEBRING Austin Sebring was born in Ripley County, Indiana, February 8, 1863, and departed this life December 10, 1946. Having had the earthly distinction of passing the age of three score and ten by a goodly number of added years. Had he not written faithfully upon the tablets of the minds of many who knew him, the story of his pure-minded and noble life, the few and humble lines of this obituary would utterly fail to portray for us more than the briefest outline. But to have known him in the morning of his life or at its noonday is to have in memory the emphasis he placed upon integrity and uprightness. At the age of 7, in 1870, he arrived at the early scenes of the West Indianola school, northwest of Topeka About a year later he, with his parents, moved to what became the Sebring homestead, a short distance southeast of Westmoreland. There in a free life he grew to young manhood. There he learned the lesson that gave him a courageous beginning of the life he lived among neighbors and friends in this community. He came to Rossville to live, in 1893; through his years on the farm he was not only a good neighbor but was enterprising and public spirited. He aided in the building of the United Brethren Church, north of Rossville, of which he was a faithful member until he moved to Rossville in 1926, and had his membership and religious interests identified with the Methodist Church. On February 3rd, 1895, Mr. Sebring was united in marriage to Miss Luella Anderson, the ceremony being held in the Rossville Methodist Church. To this happy union were born two children, Ruth and Esther. This was a happy and unbroken chain until Ruth was claimed by death at the tender age of 16 years. Through the years of retirement with which we are well acquainted, hundreds of friends and acquaintances well know the gracious ministries of Miss Esther. The deceased was preceded in death by his daughter Ruth in 1915, and by his wife on December 14, 1942. He came to his end in this life, bravely and prepared for the rewards he so richly deserves. He is survived by his daughter Esther of the home; two brothers, Chas, of Topeka, and George Sebring of Parsons; and one sister, Maude Hart, of Westmoreland. —By Rev. McProud P. Harbour officiated at the funeral services and was assisted by Mr. McProud of Topeka. Music was furnished by Mrs. Marlin Harth and Mrs. O. S. Boyd, accompanied by Miss Thelma Parr. | 9503 |  | Obituary- Sebring, Charles Miss Esther Sebring and Glen Sebring were called to Topeka Wednesday morning by the sudden death of their uncle, Charles Sebring. Funeral services for Charles Sebring, 75, of 1525 Medford, will be held Friday at 2 p.m., and burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery. The body of the 75-year-old man, who was a carpenter and contractor until his retirement in 1940, was found at his home Wednesday morning. He lived alone. According to Dr. H. L. Clark, coroner, Mr. Sebring apparently died of a heart attack. He was found on the floor of his dining room fully dressed and had probably been dead since Sunday. When neighbors failed to see Mr. Sebring out doors, they became alarmed and called police. He had been retired from active work since 1940, but was a lover of flowers, and much of his time during the past six years had been devoted to the raising of gladioli and roses. He was born March 22, 1874, in Westmoreland, and had been a resident of Topeka for 30 years. He was a member of Central Congregational church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Sebring, in 1942. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Maude Hart of Westmoreland; a brother, George Sebring of Parsons and several nieces and nephews. | |
| 9504 |  | Obituary- Sebring, Esther Esther Sebring Esther Sebring, 84, Rossville, died Wednesday, July 17, at a Topeka nursing home. Miss Sebring taught grade school at Reed School, formerly Watson, Rossville and Pleasant Hill School before she retired in 1966 after teaching 40 years in Shawnee County. After she retired she was a substitute teacher. She was born May 27, 1901, at Rossville, the daughter of Austin and Luella Anderson Sebring, and spent most of her life at Rossville. She attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Emporia State Teachers College and Washburn University at Topeka. Miss Sebring was a member of Rossville United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers Association and Alpha Delta Kappa sorority. Survivors include several cousins. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rossville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Miss Sebring will lie in state until 9 p.m. today at Parker Price Mortuary where the family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. today. She later will lie in state an hour before service time at the church. | 9505 |  | Obituary- Sebring, Glenis Glenis Marie Sebring Glenis Marie Sebring, 58, Rossville, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. She was born February 27, 1958 at Topeka, the daughter of Robert Wayne and Joan Marie Seitz Sebring. Glenis was raised in Rossville and Topeka and graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1976. She had attended Clark’s School of Business. Glenis last worked for USD No 321 in Rossville. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys and Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Rossville. Her father Wayne Sebring preceded her in death on March 22,2008. Survivors include her mother, Joan Sebring, Rossville, two brothers, Robert W. Sebring Jr. (Janet), Lake St. Louis, MO, and Ronald Sebring (Suzie),Topeka; a sister, Bev (Rick) Bradley, Hoyt; aunts, uncles and 13 nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, March 19,2016 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Interment followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. | 9506 |  | Obituary- Sebring, John John Sebring PHOENIX — Services were Aug. 22 at Grimshaw Bethany Chapel here for John Glenwood Sebring, 80, a native of Rossville, Kan., who had lived here since 1958. He was a meat inspector in Kansas for six years before he retired in 1957. He was a member of Hesperian Masonic Lodge No. Ill, AF&AM, at Rossville, and a veteran of World War I, when he served with the U.S. Army. 5urvivors include his widow, Mrs. Della Mae Sebring, Phoenix; a daughter, Letha M. Marney, Scottsdale, Ariz.; four sons, Wayne Sebring, Route 9, Topeka, and Harold Sebring, Glen Sebring and Delbert Sebring, alt of Phoenix; a sister, Nellie Janke, Junction City, Kan.; a brother, Harold Grenville, in New Mexico; 13 grandchildren, and two great - grandchildren. | 9507 |  | Obituary- Sebring, John Robert Death of Robert Sebring. Robert Sebring, son of John and Margaret Sebring, was born September 1[], 1860, and died October 21, 1899, aged 39 years, 1 month and 4 days. Mr. Sebring was the second son of a family of twelve. He married the eldest daughter of John and Margret Dailey. Their union was blessed with two boys and one girl. Robert Sebring confessed his faith in Christ at the age of 29, uniting with the United Brethren church, of which he continued a faithful member till the hour of his departure for the silent land. He never entertained a doubt as to the saving grace of God. He was satisfied with the purifying power of the blood of Jesus. God's promises were sweet, consoling and precious to him in all his suffering. With increasing suffering, communion with Christ contained more of richness, while the magnificence of his palace in that God-built city became more realistic. The anticipated happiness of heavenly society gilded the overhanging clouds of death with a brightness that chased away the sadness of the tearful goodbye of earth-loved ones. He dearly loved music and sang those old family hymns in his suffering. He has gone to join the heavenly choir to sing forevermore. His trust was in the Savior, who said, I am the resurrection and the life. Mr. Sebring was a kind and considerate father, a loving husband, and an obliging neighbor. His loss will be keenly felt, but our loss is his gain. He exchanged sorrows for joys, trials for heavenly rest and quiet, the society of loved ones for the society of the angelic host, and the rough pathway of life for the flower-fields of Elysium. His rich experience gained in life has been called to larger fields of usefulness. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 2 o'clock. Sebring, a former resident in Rossville community, passed away last Thursday, October 20th, after a lingering illness of two years, at Weaubleau, Mo. She was born in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, November 8, 1958, and married Ira F. Sebring in 1880. She is survived by her husband, one son, Emmett Sebring of Weaubleau, Mo., one daughter, Mrs. J.R. | 9509 |  | Obituary- Sebring, Margaret Margaret Reser Sebring Margaret Reser was born in Scott county, Ky., May 25, 1826, and died with a paraletic stroke May 5, 1914, age 77 years, 11 months and 10 days. She was married to John Sebring in 1858, to this union were born twelve children; six children and her husband proceeding her to the better world. The living are Ira of Topeka, Austin and Charles of Rossville and Wesley, George and Mrs. Maude Hart of Westmoreland, also four brothers and two sisters, all of whom were able to attend the funeral, but one sister of Topeka and one brother of Rossville. Mrs. Sebring became a Christian in early girl-hood and had since lived a good Christian life. She was a loving mother, a kind sister and a good neighbor, and her many friends and neighbors will indeed miss her. Mrs. Sebring, with her husband and children, came to Kansas some 40 years ago and resided upon their farm, four miles south of Westmoreland ever since. The funeral services were held at the house on Thursday at 10 a.m. and were conducted by Rev. H. S. Bowers. The remains were laid to rest in the Westmoreland cemetery by the side of her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Austin Sebring, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sebring, Mrs. Arvilla Sebring, Anthony Ruff, Z. Reser, Mont Reser, and Moss Reser, attended the funeral of Mrs. Margaret Sebring, which was held Thursday at Westmoreland. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Sebring were called to Westmoreland yesterday by the news of the death of Mr. Sebring’s mother, which occurred Tuesday evening. Mrs. Sebring had been a resident of Pottawatomie county for many years. | |
| 9510 |  | Obituary- Sebring, Nellie Memorial. The community was shocked on Monday morning by the announcement of the death of Ruth Sebring. She had been out of school for a couple of weeks because of an indisposition, but was able to be up and around the house most of the time until Saturday morning when she was taken seriously ill and medical aid was summoned. But it was unavailable and she was called higher and passed to her reward Monday, March 1st, 1915. Nellie Ruth was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Sebring and was born on the family homestead north of Rossville, December 12, 1898. Ruth gave her heart to God and her hand to the church at the early age of 12 years. She was baptised by the Rev. Job Wykert and united with the United Brethren church at Olive Branch, of which church and Sunday school she was a loved and consistent member. Ruth had a sweet amiable disposition and was much loved by those who knew her intimately. The funeral services begun at the home conducted by Prof. Livingood were completed at the M.E. church in Rossville. Rev. Walter Ward, the pastor, had charge of the services and preached a very comforting sermon from I Cor., 15:55. Ruth being a member of the Rossville High School, the scholars attended in a body. The music was beautiful and appropriate. There were many beautiful floral offerings. The pallbearers consisted of Prof. Livingood and five boys who were members of Ruth’s class (Sophomore). The remains were interred in the Rossville cemetery. The grief stricken parents and sister, Esther have the deep sympathy of the entire community. Death of Ruth Sebring Ruth Sebring, the sixteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Sebring died Monday after a very brief illness. Death was due to a breakdown of the nervous system. Miss Ruth, who was one of the most popular pupils of the high school, was forced to leave school about two weeks ago, but as late as last Friday had been up and around the house. Her condition became alarming Saturday and she passed away Monday. The funeral was held Tuesday from the Methodist church, the services being conducted by Rev. Ward. The high school students of Rossville attended the funeral in a body. Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery. | |
| 9511 |  | Obituary- Sebring, Robert Robert (Wayne) Sebring ROSSVILLE- Robert (Wayne) Sebring, Rossville, passed away March 22,2008 at a Topeka, hospital. He was born March 14, 1934 at Marrowville, (Washington County) Kansas, the son of John G. and Della M. Terpening Sebring. He attended grade school at Praireville, Twin Rows and Rossville grade schools. He also attended Rossville High School. He worked for Santa Fe Railway, Frisbie Bridge Construction, Noble Construction, and CC&M Construction as a superintendent, and WGM Construction. He retired as a crane operator with Operating Engineers Local 101 in Topeka. Wayne was a member of Operating Engineers Local 101, the Moose Club and the Jimmie Lillard Sons of the Legion Post No. 31 at Rossville. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Delbert Lloyd Sebring. Wayne married Joan Seitz on February 27, 1954 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Robert W. Jr. and wife Janet, Lake St. Louis, MO. and Ronald and wife Suzie of Topeka; two daughters, Bev Bradley and husband Rich of Hoyt, and Glenis Sebring, Rossville; two brothers, Harold Sebring, Prescott, AZ. and Glen Eldon Sebring, Sun City, AZ. one sister Letha Marney, Scottsdale, AZ; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, with one due any day, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Mr. Sebring will lie in state after 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 25, at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association or St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and sent in care of the funeral home. She is survived by her husband, Harold, three children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She graduated from Rossville High in 1947. It was there where she met her husband Harold who graduated in 1946. She was a cheerleader for Rossville High and a homecoming queen. Services will be held in Prescott, AZ on September 15. | 9513 |  | Obituary- Sedgwick, Orphustene In Memorium. O. Le Roy Sedgwick was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Feb. 17, 1847, and was educated in the public schools of that city. At the early age of 14 he entered a law office, studying his prospective profession two years. He then entered a large importing house in the city of Brooklyn as shipping clerk, acting in that capacity for seven years. He was converted at the age of 19 and united with the Handsome Place Baptist church, Brooklyn. In 1868 he was married to Miss Mary A. Chadsey, daughter of Dr. Chadsey, of New York city. In the spring of 1870 he came west and located a real estate office at St. Marys, Kan. He resided in St. Marys five years and was chosen superintendent of the first Sabbath school in that place. In 1875 he removed to Topeka and two years later established a real estate office in this city which has been under his supervision until his death which occurred at 10:45 Thursday evening, April 23, 1885. He was for three years editor and proprietor of the Kansas Valley Times, published at this place. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Archer in the Baptist church of this city at one o'clock Sunday afternoon after which the remains were carried to the depot and taken to Topeka for interment. He was an active member of the Rossville lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and was buried with all honors of the Order. The ceremonies were beautiful and impressive. O. Le Roy Sedgwick was a devout Christian, certainly a remarkable business man and an exemplary citizen, a man whose place can hardly be filled. | 9514 |  | Obituary- Sedlacek, Frank Sedlacek Frank, son of John and Anna Sedlacek, was born on December 1, 1880 in Polen in Klatv, Czechoslovakia. He was one of ten children. In the autumn of 1890 he with his parents came to America and settled near Malmo, Nebraska. In 1915 he was united in marriage with Theresie Stach in Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. and Mrs. Sedlacek farmed in the Malmo and Prague communities until the spring of 1927 when they moved to Rossville, Kansas. In 1951 they moved to a farm near Whiting, Kansas, where he retired in 1955. Mr. Sedlacek resided on his farm near Whiting, Kansas until his death. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sedlacek’s marital life was blessed with seven children. One son passed away in infancy. Mr. Sedlacek departed from this earthly life at the Saunders Community Hospital, Wahoo, Nebr., while he was visiting briefly with relatives and friends in the Prague community. He was a 50 year member of the Z.C.B.J. Lodge No. 128 of Rossville, Kansas. He was also an officer of that lodge for several years. He leaves to mourn his earthly departure his beloved wife, two daughters, Mrs. Elvin Elsik from Dallas, Texas and Viola of Phoenix, Arizona; four sons, Zdenek and Louis of Prague, Nebraska; Raymond of Topeka, Kansas; and Jaroslav of Whiting, Kansas. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Kohout and Mrs. John Piacek of Prague, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon. April 13, 1958, from the National Hall at Prague, and interment was in National Cemetery. Singers were Fredrick and Marjorie Houped with Mrs. Marjorie Proett, accompanying. | 9515 |  | Obituary- Sedlacek, Jaroslav Sedlacek Jaroslav “Sid” Sedlacek, 95, Holton, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at his home. He was bom April 28, 1922, in Abie, Neb., the son of Frank and Theresa Stach Sedlacek. He graduated from Rossville High School in 1940. Mr. Sedlacek served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his enlistment in the Army he returned to the family farm near Whiting, where he continued to farm for more than 50 years, retiring in 2000. Survivors include a brother, Louis Sedlacek, Prague, Neb.; three nieces, Pam Todd, Midlothin, Texas, Susan Anderly, Phoenix, Ariz., and Kelly Luth, Little Rock, Ark.; and four nephews, Alvin Elsik, San Antonio, Texas, Gary Anderly and Steven Anderly, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and Russell Sedlacek, Lincoln, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Libbie Elsik and Viola Anderly; three brothers, Zdenek, Raymond, Victor and Jerry Sedlacek; and a nephew, Dale Elsik. A memorial graveside service with military honors will be held at Prague National Cemetery in Prague, Neb. at a later date. | 9516 |  | Obituary- Sedlacek, Louis Louis Sedlacek, 93, of Prague, NE, entered into rest on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at his home in Prague, NE. He was born August 4, 1926 in Abie, NE to Frank and Theresa (Stach) Sedlacek. Louis attended high school in Rossville, KS and graduated in 1945. Louis served his country in the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged. In 1971, he was united in marriage to Marie (Hampl) Odvody in Prague, NE. Louis and his brother Sid owned and operated Sedlacek Service in Prague for many years. After the service station closed, due to a fire, Louis and his wife Marie opened Marie’s Bar that they ran together for several years. Louis worked for Valmont for over 5 years until he retired. Louis was a member of American Legion #254. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He always enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. He is survived by step-children, Daniel Odvody and David (Geri) Odvody; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Sedlacek; siblings, Sid Sedlacek, Libby Elsik, Raymond Sedlacek, Victor Sedlacek, Jerry Sedlacek and Viola Anderly; step-daughter, Dianne Petrzelka; nephews, Dale Elsik and Gary Anderly. | |

| 9519 |  | Obituary- Seele, Charles Charles Seele Dies Suddenly Charles Seele, for many years a member of the Law township board, died unexpectedly early Monday morning (feb. 20) at his home six miles southwest of St. Marys. He had been ill only a few hours and was retiring shortly after midnight, following a reunion of the family, when he fell dead, the victim of a heart seizure. The popular Old Timer was 77 years old. The esteem in which he was held was attested repeatedly by his election of contests, to the office he held when the final summons came, clerk of his township board. Charles F. Seele was a native of Saxony, Germany, being born there Nov. 20, 1872, the son of August Seele and Caroline Bolgess. He emigrated with his parents to Kansas in 1887, living for awhile near Lawrence, then in Jackson county, and for 45 years in Wabaunsee county. He was married April 18, 1893, at Lawrence to Minnie Supp, who passed away October 10, 1947. Together they were able to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in 1943. To this union ten children were born all living except William who died at the age of twelve in 1928. The fine old citizen is survived by nine children, sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The children surviving are August Seele, St. Marys; Herman of Denver; Mrs. Minnie Rasch of Rossville; John Seele, Rossville; Mrs. Lillie Hastings, Emporia; Mrs. Lena Lippencott, Wamego, Carl Seele, Belvue, Mrs. Laura Lohmann, Topeka and Mrs. Alice Durkee, Topeka. Brothers surviving are Richard Seele, Belvue; Ginder Seele of Lawrence; Herman, Fred and Walter, all of Rockford, Illinois; and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Lly, Michigan City, Mich., and Mrs. Emma Wells of Topeka. Funeral services were last Wednesday, afternoon in the Evangelical Church at Wells Creek, the resident pastor, Rev. Vernon Kurtz officiating. The pallbearers were six grandsons: Marion Rasch, James Seele, Don Gatrost, DuWayne Seele, Carl Louis Seele and Elgie Hastings, Jr. -- St. Marys Star. Henry was born in Topeka, Kansas, on August 6, 1936, son of Juan and Antonia Segura. He married Theresa Shufeldt on August 2, 1969, where together they had two sons. They later divorced. Henry married Wilma Viles Dominguez on January 18 in Lawrence, Kansas. Together they raised his two sons, Michael and Richard Segura both of Topeka, Kansas. He attended Topeka Public Schools and graduated from Topeka High in 1954. He joined the United States Army Reserve on June 8, 1953. After his tour he joined the United States Marine Corps where he retired on July 30, 1970. He had a very full life. Stationed in Okinawa, Philippines, Hawaii, China, Wake Island, Guam, and North Vietnam. Henry guarded Madam Nu, Climbed Mount Fuji, and from 1962 to 1965 he road shotgun for pilots from I-Core. He guarded President Eisenhower during his trip to Japan and Okinawa. He loved his country and was very proud to serve. Henry also worked at Ed Marlings T.V. and Small Appliance Repair from 1970-1973, then went on to work at St. Francis Hospital where he was a maintenance electrician from 1973-1995. He was a member of Wanamaker Seventh Day Adventist Church, and the American Legion Post 31 in Rossville. He loved working on electronics and cars and treasured spending time with his family and helping others. Henry is preceded in death by both of his parents; his brother John Segura Jr. and his sisters Romona S. Alvares and Rita S. Charay. He is survived by his wife Wilma of 43 years; his two sons Michael (Pam Cross) Segura and Richard Segura; brother Pete T. Segura and his sister Carolina S. Hernandez; and three step grandchildren, Daniel Jackson, Jared Jackson, and Matthew Cross. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Friday, June 15, 2018 at Wanamaker Seventh Day Adventist Church. Alice was born May 9th 1932 in Nemaha County Kansas east of Seneca, the second daughter of Lawrence and Loretta Haverkamp Otting. She attended school at Union Dale Country School near Oneida and later at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School in Seneca graduating in 1950. Her first job was at Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Topeka, later she worked at the Nemaha County Courthouse in the County Clerk's office. Alice worked in Doctors Conrad M. Barnes and William R. Lentz office in Seneca. Alice then worked for Doctor Fred Brown in St. Marys. Her last job was in Allied Clinical Services for the State of Kansas, retiring in 1996. Alice was a longtime member of the St. Marys Chamber of Commerce, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Marys Historical Society, Daughters of Isabella, American Legion Auxiliary, several card and domino groups, adoration at the church and was a volunteer at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka in the personnel office and information desk. Alice organized and managed five teams from the four area churches to serve as volunteers at the Lets Help Kitchen in Topeka to help serve Saturday brunch. In 1959, Alice married William J. Seitz from St. Marys at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca and moved to St. Marys. Bill and Alice owned and operated Mr. D's Drive In for 11 years and Seitz Jewelry Store for a short time. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, son Joe, sister Donna Koehler, and two brothers Bob and Jerry Otting. Alice and Bill adopted three children; Joseph R. Seitz, James E. | 9533 |  | Obituary- Seitz, Alice M. 1 Alice Seitz Sis. Alice Marie Seitz, 62, passed away Aug. 30, 1969 at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka, Kansas. She was born July 21, 1907 in Rossville, Kans., the daughter of Thomas and Katherine Cerney, and lived in the Rossville and Delia communities all of her life. She was married to John J. Seitz in Delia April 19, 1928 at Sacred Heart Church. Sis. Seitz graduated from Rossville High School, attended Washburn University, and had taught 26 years. At the time of her death she was teaching the 1st and 2nd grades in Delia. She was a member of the Teachers Ass’n, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Funeral services were held Sept. 2, 1969 at Sacred Heart Church in Delia conducted by Father John Croughwell. Interment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Survivors are her husband, John J.; 2 sons, Donald J. and Jack C., both of Topeka; 2 sisters, Mrs. Emial (Carrie) Kovar of Rossville, Mrs. Wendell (Helen) Helms of Wichita, and 4 grandsons. Z.C.B.J. | 9534 |  | Obituary- Seitz, Alice M. 2 Alice Seitz Mrs. Alice Marie Seitz, 62, died Saturday in a Topeka hospital, where she was admitted Thursday night after she was shot twice following an argument with her husband at their home near the city limits of Delia. Mrs. Seitz was shot with a 12- gauge shotgun as she crouched in a plowed field near the home. Her husband, John J. Seitz, 67, turned the gun on himself following the shooting, witnesses told Don Collins, Holton, Jackson County sheriff. Mrs. Seitz suffered wounds to her chest and abdomen. Seitz suffered wounds to his left arm and chest and remained in critical condition Saturday night at St. Francis Hospital, where he is in the intensive care unit. The Jackson County sheriff said murder charges will be filed if Seitz survives. Mrs. Alice Seitz was born July 21, 1907, at Rossville and spent most of her life in the Delia and Rossville communities. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Delia, and the Altar Society at the church. She was a teacher, and had taught in schools in the Rossville and Delia communities 26 years. She was married to John J. Seitz April 19,1928, at Delia. Besides her husband, survivors include two sons, Donald J. Seitz, 420 The Drive, and Jack C. Seitz, 1421 N. Tyler; two sisters, Mrs. Carrie A. Kovar, Rossville, and Mrs. Helen E. Helms, Wichita, and four grandsons. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Delia. She was born July 21, 1907, at Rossville and lived all her life in the Rossville-Delia area. She was married Apr. 19, 1928, to John J. Seitz at Sacred Heart Church in Delia. Mrs. Seitz was a graduate of Rossville High School and had attended Washburn University. She had taught 26 years in the two community schools, and this year, was teaching the first and second grades at the Delia Grade School. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, and the Altar Society of the church. One brother, Henry C. Cerny, died Nov. 30, 1955. She is survived by her hus¬band, John J. Seitz, of the home; two sons: Donald J. Seitz and Jack C. Seitz, both of Topeka; two sisters; Mrs. Carrie A. Kovar, Rossville, and Mrs. Helen E. Helms, Wichita; and four grandsons. Donald was born December 10,1928, to John Joseph and Alice Marie Cerny Seitz in St. Marys, Kansas. He graduated from Delia High School in 1946. Donald married Betty Ann Lieber on May 19,1956, sharing 61 years together. Donald worked in the life insurance industry, was associated with Charles Tantillo insurance agency. He was a member of many organizations: Knights of Columbus, Life Underwriters, Certified Life Underwriters, AA member and Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church. Donald loved to play cards, Scrabble, and billiards, was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping and loved to travel in their RV. They traveled to Minnesota with the same friends for twenty-five years. Survivors include his wife, Betty; sons, Robert J. Seitz (Laura) and Stephen D. Seitz (Catherine); three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; plus many nieces, nephews; and friends. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John C. Seitz. | 9539 |  | Obituary- Seitz, John C. 1 Jack Seitz ( September 15, 1937 - October 27, 2017 ) “Jack” John Seitz, 80, of Topeka, passed away October 27, 2017. Jack was born on September 15, 1937 in Delia, Kansas to John Seitz and Alice Czerny. Not to be confused with his father and grandfather everyone called him Jackie. After he left the family farm he decided that Jack would be a more fitting description of his gender, and therefore became known as “Jack Seitz”. Jack hit the tarmac running! After graduation from Delia in 1955 he spent 12 months attending classes at Clarks Business College in Topeka and taking some other business classes at Pierce College. Jack’s first job after graduating from high school was at Stormont Vail hospital as an assistant credit manager. He moved on to the Kansas National Guard in 1957 and then to the Martin Company in 1960. In 1962 he moved to California and worked as a junior expediter for Rocket dyne. Jack moved back to Topeka in 1965 to be with his kids in Topeka and the rest is history. He opened the Twilighter and the Four Seasons and made Old Town Motors. Jack became a North Topeka entrepreneur and became a very will know figure in the North Topeka area. Jack had a lot of unique qualities. He had many friends and never knew a stranger. He was always helping someone and never turned down a request for assistance. Jack had 6 children, and each has their own experience or story that they could relate. John, the oldest, had several incidents that he thought would be interesting to share. The first was that during the summer 1975 while working at Old Town Motors in North Topeka he made a deal with John by letting him buy two cars and put them on the lot. That’s how he was to be compensated for working, at the end of the first week the only two cars that were sold that week were John’s. he told John that we need to have a talk. Jack did not let him buy any cars until the next month. | |
| 9540 |  | Obituary- Seitz, John C. 2 Jack use to rent out motor homes from the car lot and would plan family vacations around the return of the unit. The Winnebago was new and we just got back from it Madian Rental. It came back dirty and empty of water, propane, and gas. Jack got the camper refilled with the serviceable items and had Lavette clean it up the best she could. As the four of them left Topeka they noticed a foul smell. The septic had not been emptied. They pulled the camper down a gravel road with a high embankment, and Jack proceeded to show Mike and John how to empty the septic tank in a safe manner. As Mike and John stood back at a safe distance they watched him open the black water valve on the camper and nothing happened. Jack realized immediately what he had done and instead of closing the valve he looked over at Mike and I and told us to “get back”. Jack them attempted to remove the cap from the camper sewer pipe. In his attempt to quickly escape the spewing sludge, he slipped in the wet grass and fell to the ground only to slide down the embankment with the sludge following him close behind. There were at least 3 attempts to escape the in suing waves of unwelcoming sludge before he managed to get clear of the hazard. Never in my life had Mike and I laughed so hard. He replaced the cap and told us that we were never to tell this story. Lavette met him at the door with a towel. She instructed Jack to remove his clothes and go directly to the camper shower. He left his clothes there and he was so mad. Lavette kept a straight face until he was in the shower. She laughed with Mike and I told us that was the funniest thing she had ever experienced. A few months ago, I shared that story with Hillary (John’s girlfriend) Jack smiled big and calmly said “Shit Happens”. Well Jack we know that and thank you for your time on this earth and all that you did for us. You will be greatly missed and tell all our friends Hi for us. Jack is preceded in death by his wife Lavetta Renner Seitz, both of his parents, and two sons, Shane and Mike Seitz. He is survived by his four sons, John D. Seitz, Ben (Rachel) Seitz, Dan (Kacy) Seitz, and Matt (Theresa) Kiene; one daughter, Jackie (Dayne) Eaton; one brother, Don (Betty) Seitz and 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. | 9541 |  | Obituary- Seitz, Linda LINDA ANN SEITZ Linda Ann Seitz was born on Sunday, October 13, 1940 in Wamego, Kansas. She was the daughter of Robert and Lura (Mc- Nay) McCoy. Linda lived in St. Marys, Kansas since 1959, moving to Ottawa, Kansas in 1968 where she made her home until her death on Thursday, September 5,2013, at the age of seventy-two years. Linda graduated from Rossville High School with the class of 1958. On April 11, 1959 Linda was united in marriage with Albert Seitz in St. Marys, Kansas. He survives of their home after fifty-four years of marriage. Other survivors include her three daughters, Sharon Van Horn and husband Gene of Wellsville, Kansas, Ronda Seiwert arid husband Paul of St. Mark/Colwich, Kansas, and Brenda Wray and husband John of Ottawa; nine grandchildren, Greg Van Horn, Gary Van Horn and wife Amanda, Amy Strenth and husband Mike, Jordan, Katie and John Paul Seiwert, Mark Wray and wife Lacey, Erik and Amanda Wray; two great grandchildren, Dylan and Austin Strenth; sister Lois Lacock and husband Tom of Rossville, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Linda was not only a loving and devoted wife and mother, but also worked as an assistant preschool teacher for East Central Vocational Cooperative in the late 70s and early 1980’s. Linda was a Franklin County 4-H Leader, and was a realtor for Prestige Real Estate for seventeen years, retiring in 2010. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Ottawa Women’s Golf Association and Treasurer of Friday Night Couples Golf at Ottawa Country Club. Many things were important in life to Linda, but among the greatest were her family, children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with them enjoying trips and camping adventures. Linda will be deeply missed and remain in the hearts and thoughts of her family and friends forever. | 9542 |  | Obituary- Seitz, Nicholas An Auto Accident With Fatal Results Nicholas J. Seitz, aged 38, died Tuesday night at a Topeka hospital from injuries received in an auto accident here on July 4th. Last Saturday afternoon an auto driven by the owner, Ira Oox, who lives north of Delia and carrying Nicholas Seitz, Art White and Ed Barber, started from the Howard grove to make a trip to Rossville. At the corner near the Howard residence where the road turns north, the auto turned over in making the turn. Neither auto nor the occupants were damaged in this accident. After righting the machine the car was again started on its trip to town. A half mile farther north the road makes a short jog of perhaps 200 feet to the Mai Street road. The road is soft and is usually very dusty after much travel over it. It was here the auto again turned turtle this time with serious results. Seitz, who it is said was riding on the footboard, was probably struck on the head by a fender and the blow caused concussion of the brain. Cox received a wrenched neck and bruises about the back. Arthur White received severe but not serious injuries. Mr. Barber was slightly injured. The car whirled so that it was headed south. Its steering wheel and windshield were broken otherwise it was damaged little. It was necessary for an auto to race several miles north of Rossville before a doctor could be found. Dr. H.B. Miller hurried to the injured man and found him in serious shape. Sunday Seitz was taken to Topeka in hopes an operation would save his life. The injured man never regained consciousness after being hurt, and died Tuesday night. The remains were taken to St. Marys last night where the funeral will be held. Mr. Seitz and his wife have been employed at the Mulvane ranch for several years as boardinghouse keepers. | |
| 9543 |  | Obituary- Seitz, William J. Bill Seitz ST. MARYS—William J. “Bill” Seitz, 69, St. Marys, died Wednesday, Nov. 6,2002, at his home. Mr. Seitz was a telecommunications engineer and retired from ConTel Telephone Co. in 1991. He also was an antique clock repairman and operated a shop in his home for the past 25 years. He worked for Charlie Sharp’s gas station and the Farmer’s Union Co-op service station while he was in high school, and later for its oil and seed corn plant before joining the Army. He served in the Army as an anti-air artillery specialist from 1951 to 1953. He was born May 21,1933, on a farm near St. Marys, to Bernard and Lena Pageler Seitz. He graduated from St, Marys High School in 1951. Mr. Seitz was a member of Immaculate Concep¬tion Catholic Church, a 50-year member and a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 657. He was past post commander of Hoy-Heim Post No. 178 of the American Legion and a member of St. Marys Historical Society. He married Alice Otting on April 26,1959. She survives. Other survivors include a son, James Seitz, Wichita; a daughter, Janet Valentine, Cincinnati; two sisters, Mary K. Denton, St. Marys, and Joan Marie Sebring, Topeka; a brother, Albert J. | 9545 |  | Obituary- Senecal, Barnabas 1 Abbot Barnabas Senecal, died peacefully at the Abbey early on Tuesday morning, December 7. He had been fortified by the Sacraments of the Church and the Apostolic Pardon. Several monks and health care workers were present with him when he died. On October 16, 1937, Tom Senecal (the future Abbot Barnabas) and his twin brother Tim became the newest members of the Senecal family. Growing up in Atwood, Kansas, all of the Senecal children would ultimately attend Catholic boarding school in Atchison, Kansas. There Tom would take his first steps on the journey toward the priesthood as a student at Maur Hill Prep School. After graduation, he became a “hilltopper” at St. Benedict’s College, the residence program for men interested in the priesthood and religious life. On July 10, 1957, he became a novice of St. Benedict’s Abbey, receiving the name Barnabas. One year and a day later on July 11, 1958, he professed his first vows as a monk. With the first phase of his collegiate education complete, he studied for the priesthood at the Abbey School of Theology in Atchison and was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1964. In the summers of 1963 and 1964 he did further theology studies at Conception Seminary in Missouri. Abbot Barnabas taught Religion and was a prefect in Freshmen Hall at St. Benedict’s College, 1964-1965. From 1965 until 1968 he was Assistant Pastor at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Atchison. In 1966, he combined his work as assistant pastor with part-time teaching at Maur Hill, spending his summers pursuing graduate studies in history at the University of Kansas. In 1968 he began teaching history full-time at the high school. He went on to be appointed assistant headmaster in 1969 and, upon completion of a Masters degree in Educational Administration in 1976 from Emporia State University, he was appointed headmaster. In 1990 he left Maur Hill and took a sabbatical year in Rome, and Menlo Park, CA. While on sabbatical he developed a love for photography – a craft that he expertly honed despite his lack of any formal training. Upon his return from sabbatical, he joined the staff of Holy Spirit Parish, serving as associate pastor and principal of the grade school. There he was a beloved parish priest and principal, making many life-long friends. In 1994 Father Barnabas was elected eighth Abbot of St. Benedict’s Abbey. During his eighteen-and-a-half-year leadership he guided the community faithfully, kindling the beginnings of a vocational renewal at St. Benedict’s Abbey. He is well known throughout the archdiocese for his work administering the Sacrament of Confirmation. His calm wisdom on the Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Benedictine College Boards of Directors was valuable during difficult times for those schools. He also faithfully served on the Personnel Board for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kanas. | |
| 9546 |  | Obituary- Senecal, Barnabas 2 He shared not only his wisdom, but song, and is well known as the “Singing Abbot.” His abbatial motto, “Sing a New Song to the Lord,” is taken from Psalms 98 and 149. Abbot Barnabas—in his own creative way—has attempted to make his service to the Church a work of art. Looking at snapshots from his camera and life, one sees that God has used him to create a beautiful monastic mosaic. An exhibit of his life would include images of compassion, beauty, encouragement, wisdom, brotherly love, and service in the name of Christ. The words of instruction that St. Benedict gave to the Abbot fit perfectly the personality of Abbot Barnabas: [He should not be] Excitable, anxious, extreme, obstinate, jealous, or over suspicious he must not be. Such a man is never at rest. (Rule of St. Benedict 64:16) After he retired as Abbot, he spent time as administrator of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Marys, KS, and St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Rossville, KS. He also served as Parochial Vicar of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Atchison, before retiring to the Abbey. Abbot Barnabas was one of the storytellers of the Abbey who remembered many of the giants of the monastic community, and people in the local community. If you mentioned someone from the past, he would give a full account of who the person was. Abbot Barnabas was preceded in death by his parents John and Clara; his sister Clare; by his brothers Father Gerard Senecal, OSB, William, and Richard; by his nephews William Jr, and Steven; and a brother-in-law, Ronald Hansen. He is survived by his twin brother and sister-in-law Nicholas and Katy, Hyde Park, MA, and by his sister Mary Hansen, and numerous nephews and nieces. Vespers for the Dead, followed by visitation, will be prayed on Monday, December 13, at 7:00 p.m. in St. Benedict's Abbey Church. The Mass of Christian Burial for Abbot Barnabas will be celebrated in St. Benedict’s Abbey Church on Tuesday, December 14 at 10:30 AM., with interment following in the Abbey cemetery. Abbot will lie in state on Monday at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Vespers for the Dead and the Mass of Christian Burial will be streamed live on our Youtube Channel and will be available for playback after the fact. | 9547 |  | Obituary- Senecal, Gerard FATHER GERARD SENEGAL Father Gerard Senecal, O.S.B., 85, died on Jan. 19 fortified by the Sacraments, and the Apostolic Pardon. His brother, Abbot Barnabas Senecal, O.S.B., was able to be with him for a few hours prior to his death and at the moment of his death. Vigil service, followed by visitation, was on Sunday, Jan. 25 in St. Benedict’s Abbey Church. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Benedicts Abbey Church on Monday, Jan. 26 with interment that followed in the Abbey cemetery. John Carl Senecal was the oldest of seven children born to Lionel John and Clara (Strecker) Senecal. As a youth John served daily Mass at his home parish in Atwood, Kan. John enrolled at Maur Hill Prep as a priesthood student in 1943 with plans to join his uncle, Fr. Lucien Senecal, who was a monk of St. Benedicts Abbey. He graduated from Maur Hill in 1947, then enrolling at St. Benedicts College to study mathematics. At the age of 18, he entered the novitiate as a Benedictine monk, receiving the name Gerard. He professed vows one year later on July 11,1949. In May 1951 he graduated with a degree in mathematics, and professed solemn vows on July 11, 1952. He studied for the priesthood at the Abbey School of Theology and was ordained on May 29, 1954 by Archbishop Edward Hunkeler. In the summer of 1955 he studied chemistry at Creighton University, and that fall he enrolled at the University of Michigan, where he received his M.A. in physics in 1958. From 1958 until 1963 he studied physics at Kansas State University, completing his Ph.D. in 1963. In 1962 Fr. Gerard returned to teach physics and be a dorm director at St. Benedicts College. A love of learning and a desire for God compelled him to continue his studies. He studied at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland; the Atomic Energy Commission, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Texas A&M University; and a National Science Foundation post-doctoral year, 1970-71, at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1970 Fr. Gerard was on the Merger Committee for St. Benedicts and Mount St. Scholastica Colleges. On February 14,1972, he became President of Benedictine Col¬lege. Over the next 15 years he would bring his enthusiasm for learning and faith into all he did as President. He was particularly proud of the fact that he brought football back to the college, and hired current coach Larry Wilcox. After leaving the presidency of the college, Fr. Gerard worked at Maur Hill from 1987 until 1993, followed by one year, 1993-1994, as the Development Director of the Abbey, where he established the Friends of St. Benedicts Abbey, a group that is still key to our success. In 1994 Fr. Gerard began a new phase of life as a parish priest, serving as Pastor of St. Joseph’s and St. Patrick’s Churches, Atchison (1994- 1998); Pastor of St. Benedict’s and Sacred Heart Churches, Atchison (1998-2013); and Administrator of Immaculate Conception, St. Marys, Kan., and St. Stanislaus, Rossville, Kan. (2013-2014). He was known for his pastoral care of the sick and elderly, and helping people to come to appreciate the Sacramental life. Upon returning to the Abbey in August 2014, Fr. Gerard was faithful to prayer and community life, attending monastic community events and keeping in touch with his many friends in the local community. He was one of those towering figures who trusted in Christ and remained faithful in good times and in bad. He is survived by his two sisters Clare Kearney (Peter), Fredericksburg, Va; Mary Hansen (Ron), Kansas City, Mo; and two brothers: Abbot Barnabas, Atchison; and Nicholas, Hyde Park, Mass. Fr. | 9548 |  | Obituary- Seneker, Dwight Rev. Dwight Seneker The Rev. Dwight Seneker, 85, Mt. Vernon, MO, formerly of Rossville, died Sunday, December 27, 1998, in Mt. Vernon after a three-month illness following complications from surgery. He was born May 1, 1913, in Lawrence County, MO to James Eldred and Edna Frances Rutherford Seneker. He was a 1931 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and a graduate of Park College and McCormick Theological Seminary. He was a minister for 45 years. He was ordained in the First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Vernon in 1950, and served pastorates in Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas, including Presbyterian churches in Rossville and Delia. Twenty-five years ago he moved from Rossville to Mt. Vernon, MO. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Orr May 12, 1934, in Mt. Vernon. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Donald Seneker and Douglas Seneker, both of Mt. Vernon; one daughter, Sue Gabbert, Mt. Vernon, MO; one brother, Leon Seneker, Salem, MO; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. His service was Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Vernon. Burial was in Ozark Prairie Cemetery, northeast of Mt. Vernon. Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, was in charge of arrangements. Rev. Dwight Seneker Rossville - The Rev. Dwight Seneker, 85, Mount Vernon, Mo., formerly of Rossville, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at a Mount Vernon, Mo., nursing home. He suffered complications following surgery three months earlier at a hospital in Springfield, Mo. He was born May 1, 1913, in Lawrence County, Mo., to James Eldred and Edna Frances Rutherford Seneker. He was graduated from Mount Vernon, Mo., High School in 1931, Park College in Parkville, Mo., and McCormick Theological Seminary. He was ordained to the ministry at First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon, Mo., in 1950 and was a minister 45 years, having served churches in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. He served Presbyterian churches in Rossville and Delia while he lived in Rossville. He moved from Rossville to Mount Vernon, Mo., 25 years ago. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Orr May 12, 1934, in Mount Vernon, Mo. She survives. | 9550 |  | Obituary- Shafer, William William Shafer ROSSVILLE — William A. "Bill” Shafer, 58, Rossville, died Thursday, May 10,2001, at his home. He had cancer. Mr. Shafer was a truck driver and had worked for several different companies, and he drove as an owner and operator. He was born June 6,1942, in McFall, Mo., the son of Robert Russell and Velina Elizabeth Combs Shafer. He was raised in the Holton and Valley Falls communities. Mr. Shafer participated in several bowling leagues in Topeka. He also was an avid fisherman and a cook. He married Theresa A. Powell on Dec. 30, 1975, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include four sons, Russell R. Shafer, Chicago, and Frank L. Schneider, Anthony W. Schneider and Steven B. Schneider, all of Topeka; a brother, Buddy Shafer, Topeka; two sisters, Ana Mae Lake, Blue Rapids, and Betty Lou Eteeyan, Topeka; and four grandchildren. Mr. Shafer was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart of America Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home. |
