| Obituary- Coleman, Thomas 1 Obituary.
Thomas J. Coleman, a venerable and highly esteemed citizen of Rossville, entered into rest, June 21st, 1895.
He was born in Maryland, March 20, 1806. When fourteen years of age he moved to Washington, Indiana, where he lived until 1869, from whence he removed to Kansas, settling in Menoken Tp., Shawnee county, where two sons now reside.
He was married to Lucinda Martin, Aug. 25th, 1827. His wife, with whom he lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding, was called Home nearly eighteen years ago. Ten children, five sons and five daughters, were born to them. Three were in attendance at the funeral service, the other four being in New Mexico. Father Coleman united with the Christian Church fifty five years ago, ever since which time he remained a faithful member of the same. This Father in Israel had for several years made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Gilbert, and until the last few years was a familiar face in Rossville, visiting the sick, calling on friends and regular at church services. As the infirmities of old age crept on him he became confined to the house, and for nearly seventeen months was in his room most of the time. At times he suffered greatly, but always bore it patiently, looking forward to his releases with hopes for a blessed future, often expressing a wish to die and be at rest. He was glad to have friends call, and to talk with them of the hope beyond, his conception of spiritual truths growing clearer day by day.

| Obituary- Coleman, Thomas 2 Two days before his death he was taken very sick with cramping in his stomach which continued until death, although his speech near the last could not be distinctly understood the last words were something about home and mother. His consciousness to the last was manifest in the fact that he folded his arms across his breast and breathed his last with his eyes and mouth closed. As a tired child goes to sleep in the arms of its mother so this Saintly Father fell asleep in the arms of Jesus. Owing to the peculiar views which he had often expressed concerning funeral sermons none was preached, but the friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert on Sunday at one o'clock. The choir sang "Safe in the arms of Jesus." Rev. Paddleford of the M.E. Church read a portion of scripture, offered prayer, made a brief statement of the life of the deceased and the remains were carried to the station followed by relatives and many friends, from thence by rail to Menoken, where other friends met them and conveyed them to Prairie Home Cemetery where other children, Grandchildren, Great-grand-children, and [continued on next item] |

many friends had gathered to pay their last respects to Father, Grandfather and friend.
Rev. Ingles, of the Christian Church offered prayer, followed by a sketch of his life, and the mortal remains of Grand-father Coleman were laid to rest, beside that of his companion, to await the resurrection morning.
"Blessed by the dead which die in the Lord." "So Jesus slept; God's dying Son passed through the grave, and blessed the bed. Rest here, blest Saint till from His throne the morning break and pierce the shade.
A Friend. |
