Teachers Marry In Saturday Rite
Evelyn Marie Kovar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Paul Kovar, Rossville, and Mahlon B. Thompson Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon B. Thompson, were married in a double ring ceremony Saturday.
The Very Rev. Leslie Skerry Olsen read the marriage vows at 10 a.m. in Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Max R. Elsberry was organist and John Appleton and Thomas Appleton were acolytes.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white, imported Jacquard cotton fashioned with a slim skirt, high rounded neckline, fitted bodice, long sleeves and a long detachable train. Her illusion veil fell from a coronet of matching fabric. She carried a cascade of Killian daisies, stephanotis and ivy.
Betty Kovar, Kansas City, Mo., attended her sister as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Robert Rafferty, Rossville, sister of the bride, and Sharon Smith.
They wore floor-length dresses of island green satin fashioned with slim skirts, rounded necklines, fitted bodices and elbow-length sleeves. Their floor-length trains were attached at the neckline with bows. They carried cascades of Killian daisies and ivy.
Kimberly Kovar, Liberty, Mo., was flower girl. Her dress was similar to the bride's attendants. Michael Rafferty, Rossville, carried the rings.
Richard Young was best man and ushers were David Pantle, Denver, Colo.; Earl Kovar, Liberty, Mo., brother of the bride; Robert Rafferty, Rossville; and David Slater.
A reception in the Cathedral dining room followed the ceremony. Assisting were Mrs. Earl Kovar, Liberty, Mo.; Mrs. Clyde Brown, Louisburg; Janette Brown and Jaanine Brown, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Charles Renyer, Mrs. David Slater, Mrs. Josephine Murphy and Mrs. William Monteith.
The couple will make their home at 2219 Fairlawn Road, Topeka.

October 31, 1936 - May 6, 2021
Evelyn Thompson (nee Kovar)
Died peacefully May 6, 2021 at the age of 84 years old. Beloved wife of the late Mahlon Thompson Jr. Dear mother of the late Barbara Bielicki and mother-in-law of David Bielicki of Belgium and Katherine (David) Eurich of Bayside. Preceded in death by her siblings Earl (Disca Ann) Kovar, Betty Kovar and Agnes (Robert) Rafferty. Further survived by 4 grandchildren; Johnathan Bielicki, Christopher Bielicki, August Eurich and Anastasia Eurich; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Evelyn grew up on a farm in Rossville, Kansas and was truly an educator at heart. She was ahead of her time as a woman in both science and education, earning her bachelor's degree in Biological and Physical Science in 1958 and her masters degree in science in 1963, both from Emporia State University. She married Mahlon, the love of her life and also an educator, in 1965. After moving to the Milwaukee area in 1966 she taught at a number of institutions, including spending many years teaching Anatomy and Physiology to nursing students at Milwaukee Area Technical College. She also taught high school students as a science lab instructor for over 20 years at Pius XI high school until she retired in 1996. The number of lives that she touched through her teaching is countless and is something she took pride in during her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and taking road trips across the United States. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy.
