John Jeremiah Hartzell was born in Menallen Township, Allen County, PA. A pioneer of Darke County, OH, John Jerimiah came to Ohio in 1833 with two of his brothers, Henry and George. In the next few years they were followed by his brothers Philip, Jonas, and Daniel, their mother, Elizabeth, and his married sister Hannah Hartzell Zeigler with her husband Jacob.
His father, John Philip Hartzell, died in Pennsylvania, and his mother remarried.
John Jerimiah was married to Nancy Westfall, a native of Darke County. They were farmers near Beamsville. Their children were William, Philip, David Daniel, John, Josiah, and James A. His sons remained in Ohio except for David Daniel, who went west and settled in Kansas, and Philip, who went west but returned to farm on the family land. |
