Truck-Car Wreck Fatal to Two Men
New Car Demolished In US-24 Collision
Two men were killed and their new Mercury car demolished early Monday morning when the car and a big truck driven by Arthur M. Johnson of Kansas City collided headon on highway US-24 about three-quarters of a mile east of Rossville.

Those killed were Harvey J. Lasswell, 22, of Route 1, Emmett, driver, and William C. Gideon, 29, of Delia. Johnson escaped injury and his truck was not seriously damaged. The truck and its load weighed approximately 55,000 pounds.

The car was traveling west on the highway and the truck going east. Officers said the car apparently skidded to the wrong side of the road and the collision resulted.

The bodies were taken to St. Marys. Lasswell was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Lasswell of Emmett and Gideon was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gideon, also of Emmett.

The accident increased the total number of traffic casualties in Shawnee County to 14, only one of which occurred within the city limits of Topeka.

Emmett Lads Killed In US 40 Collision
Two of Cross Creek’s finest young men lost their lives about three o'clock Monday morning when Harvey Lasswell, 22, and Bill Gideon, 29, were killed in a U.S. 40 collision just east of Rossville.

Harvey was driving the westbound 1949 Mercury sedan which smashed into a mammoth, eastbound P.I.E, semi-trailer truck. Bill was a passenger. Both died immediately.

The driver of the giant, 55,000-pound cargo truck was Arthur Johnson of Kansas City, who escaped injury. The Lasswell automobile was demolished.

Harvey Lasswell is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Lasswell of Emmett, the former being the Democrat nominee in this district for county commissioner. The accident victim is also a grandson of H. A. Lasswell of Emmett, county commissioner in the early 1930s.

William C. Gideon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gideon, owners of the Emmett telephone exchange. His father is a former mayor of Emmett. Bill is an overseas veteran of World War II, seeing combat service in the Italian campaign. After his discharge he was employed in St. Marys at the Paramore Food Store. About two years ago he left for Delia to operate a recreation parlor. He graduated from Emmett high school.

Both of the victims were athletes, both unmarried.

Harvey, a graduate of the Emmett high school, is survived by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Bill is survived by his parents and a half-brother, Merle Gideon of Delia, and a sister, Mrs. Harold Cox living south of Topeka.

The bodies were brought to Verschelden’s Funeral Home. Last rites were held Wednesday with the interments in St. Clere cemetery. The Gid-eon funeral was at 1:30 in the afternoon at the Verschelden chapel. The Lasswell service was at 3 in the Emmett Methodist church. Ministers at both services were Rev. J. H. Thornberry or St. Marys and Rev. Paul Davis of Randolph.

The Lasswell pallbearers were Gene Kennedy, George Clark, Kermit Fairbanks, Art Jensen, Don Smith and Delbert Marten.

The Gideon pallbearers were Robert Siegle, Joe May, Gene Kennedy, Wayne Ogle, Duwayne Zirkle and Paul Matyak.
