    James Earl Barney
    lames Earl Barney, 80, formerly of Topeka, died on Feb. 20 in Carson City, NV. He was born on Sept. ], 1926, in Rossville, KS to James Earl and Irene Franz Barney.
    He graduated from Topeka High School in 1943 and received a Summerfield Scholarship to the University of Kansas, where he earned his B, S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Kansas. While at K.U., he was sports editor for the University Daily Kansan. He married Patricia Leonard on Oct. 4, 1946, in Oakridge, TN. Before moving to Carson City 13 years ago, he lived in Avon, CT. He was a research scientist who authored many papers in his field and a lay minister in the United Meth¬odist Church, which published a book of his sermons. He also coached youth sports and loved fishing. In retirement, he vol¬unteered in the Carson City Public Schools. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Duane Barney. He is sur¬vived by his wife; his son Alan Barney of Carson City, NV; his daughter Ayn of Hemet, CA; grandsons Ryan and Justin Barney; and several extended family members.
    He was cremated and his ashes were interred at Rossville Cemetery on May 27. Memorial donations may be made to the United Meth¬odist Memorial Fund, 400 W. King Street, Carson City, NV, 89703.
