J. Earl Barney Sr., 88, Topeka, died Thursday, April 27, 1989, at a Rossville nursing home.
Mr. Barney spent many years in the automobile and real estate businesses in Topeka.
He was born April 5, 1901, in the Grove area north of Silver Lake, the son of J. William and Valinda Wyatt Barney. He lived most of his life in Shawnee County.
He spent many winters in West Palm Beach, Fla., where he was president of Kansas Society of Palm Beaches.
Mr. Barney was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church and was active in the Sunday school at the church. He also was a 50-year member of Herperian Lodge No. Ill, AF&AM, in Rossville.
He was married to Irene Franz on Aug. 10, 1921, at Topeka. She died April 3, 1980.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. James Earl Barney Jr., Avon, Conn., and Dr. Duane Barney, Bethesda, Md.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. MonŽday in Parker-Price Mortuary. BuriŽal will be in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Barney will lie in state after 4 p.m. today at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contribuŽtions may be made to Lowman UnitŽed Methodist Church, 4000 Drury Lane, 66604.
