wedding annivesrary
Mr. and Mrs. Nels Thompson of Delia celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary Sunday, March 9. Those present were brothers and sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Keller, Mr. and Mrs. Linn Keller, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Thompson; Curtis and Ina Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bowers, Christina, Ruth Anne, Larry and Johnny Bowers.
The beautiful four-tier cake was made by Mrs. Oscar Gideon of Emmett. Afternoon callers were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Thompson and children; Mr. Vernon Keller and Skipper.

Open house for 60th wedding anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Nels Thompson will hold open house at their farm home six miles north of Delia, March 8, from 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon in observance of their 60th wedding anniversary. Friends and relatives are invited to attend. |

Mr. and Mrs. Nels Thompson celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at their home north of Delia, March 8, 1959.
Their four daughters served dinner to the couple and their brothers and sister. Places were laid for Mr. and Mrs. Nels Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Thompson, Mr, and Mrs. L. V. Keller, Mrs. Alma Keller, a cousin, all of Delia, Mr. and Mrs. James Worthington, Rawlings, Wyoming, and Mr. and Mrs. Levi Keller, Rossville.
Grandchildren present were Harry Herrington, Dr. and Mrs. James Brennan, Larry, Ruth Anne, Johnny and Diane Bowers. Also present were Father Nebiols, Lawrence and Alfred Bowers, Marvin Berry and Norma Fortier.
At the reception which followed, Ina Thompson cut the lovely three tiered cake that was baked and presented as a gift by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Gideon of Emmett. Mrs. Emma Bowers poured the punch. Also assisting at the reception were Mrs. Stella Herrington. Mrs. James Brennan. Ruth Anne Bowers and Mrs. Lawrence Bowers.
Nearly 200 friends and relatives signed the guest book, coming from Hiawatha, Holton, Soldier, Topeka. Rossville, Eskridge, St. Marys, Mayetta, Emmett, and Delia. They brought many lovely gifts.
Alta and Nels were married at the U. B. Church at Adrian, March 6, 1899, by the Rev. J. Wykert. Two of his children attended the reception, Lydia and Olin.
There were three in attendance at the reception that were present at the wedding 60 years ago. Chris Thompson, Lin Keller and Lillie Keller Worthington.
Their first home was one mile west of their present one and they have spent their entire married life in this community. They have led an active life taking part in all community affairs. Although confined to a wheelchair, Alta does most of her house work and pieces quilts for pastime. Nels still farms 400 acres of land and every nice day finds him on one of his new tractors in the field.
They have served their community well and thru the years Nels has held many a public office.
They are the parents of five living children, Stella Herrington, Silver Lake; Ina and Curtis of Topeka; Emma Bowers and Christina Bowers, Delia.
They enjoy television but most of all they enjoy the visits from friends and relatives.

Christina L. Bowers, 87, Delia, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at a Topeka hospital.
She was born February 2, 1914 in Delia, the daughter of Nels and Alta Keller Thompson.
She lived in the Delia communi¬ty most of her life. She graduated from Delia High School. She was a school teacher at Neive School for five years and a substitute teacher at the High Prairie School. In 1968, she and her son were graduated from Washburn University. She received her Masters in Education degree from Washburn University in 1978. She taught first grade 13 years at the Colorado Grade School in Holton. She retired in the spring of 1981 be¬cause of her husband’s health. She was a substitute teacher for USD 321 from 1984 until 1998.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia. She was also a member of the Delia Quilters and the Delia Card Club. She was a past 4-H leader and a past member of the Jackson County FCE Unit. She was a member of the Re¬tired Teachers Association.
On May 2, 1938, she married Lawrence A. Bowers at Holy Name Catholic Church in Topeka. He died November 8, 1983. An infant son, I James F. Bowers, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daugh¬ters, Christina Brennan-Rezac and Katherine Diane Budden, both of St. Marys, and Ruth Anne Walker, Au¬burn; two sons, Lawrence A. Bow¬ers, Jr., Delia, and John E. Bowers, Joliet, IL; a sister, Emma Bowers, Silver Lake; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Sa¬cred Heart Catholic Church, Delia. Burial was in Adrian Cemetery northwest of Delia in Jackson Coun¬ty. A rosary was recited at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home Thursday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a prayer ser¬vice at 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice and sent in care of Piper-Verschelden Funer¬al Home.
Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys, was in charge of arrangements.

DELIA—Christina L. Bowers, 87, Delia, died Tuesday, March 13,2001, at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Bowers taught school until 1998. She began her career in Neive School and then was a substitute teacher at The High Prairie School.

She graduated with her son from Washburn University in 1968 and earned a mas¬ter’s degree in education at Washburn in 1978. She lived most of her life in Delia.
Mrs. Bowers was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia, Delia Quilters and Delia Card Club. She was a former 4-H leader and member of the Jackson County Home Demon¬stration Unit. She also was a member of The Retired Teachers Association.
She married Lawrence A. Bowers on May 2, 1938, in Topeka. He died Nov. 8, 1983. Mrs. Bowers also was preceded in death by an infant son, James F. Bowers.
Survivors include three daughters, Christina Brennan-Rezac and Katherine Diane Budden, both of St. Marys, and Ruth Anne Walker,

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Fri¬day at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia. Burial will be at Adrian Cemetery northwest of Delia. Mrs. Bowers will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A rosary recited at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. will be followed by a prayer service at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice and sent in care of the funeral home.

Christina Bowers will celebrate her 80th birthday with a reception at her home north of Delia from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30.
The event is hosted by her children: Christina and Ken Rezac, Larry and Marla Bowers, Ruth Anne and John Walker, Diane and Rick Budden and John and Ann Bowers. Friends, family and neighbors are invited. |
