    Brubaker-White
Norfolk, Va., Sept. 9 - Betty Jane Brubaker stood in the foyer of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church last night, as pretty a brunette bride-to-be as ever a sailor might hope to claim, feeling as though she had hit the jackpot with her last nickel.

Two weeks ago Betty Jane came east from her home in Topeka to meet Clayton Eugene White, machinist's mate first class, USN, the childhood sweetheart she had not seen for three years, and marry him. She had hardly reached Norfolk, where his ship had put in after three years' foreign duty, when he was ordered away to Portland, Me. The wedding had to be put off.

But his ship was back in Norfolk yesterday, and the couple determined to seize their opportunity and be married last night. Betty Jane was willing to give up her wish for a church wedding, but another Norfolk couple to be married learned of the situation and came to her assistance. They were having a rehearsal of their wedding at the Lafayette Church last night. They would run through the rehearsal, then provide their own party attendants and an audience for the real wedding of the former Rossville, Kan. sailor boy and his girl.

And so Betty Jane had her church wedding. The rehearsal bride-to-be, Miss Eileene Emma Curtin, was her maid of honor, and Miss Curtain's father got in a little practice at giving the bride away, and Ruth Elder Matthews, sister of Miss Curtain's fiancé, sang.

And after it was over the couple looked forward to a thirty-seven-day leave, with a trip to New York and another to San Francisco to see MM 1-C White's family, Mr. and Mrs. A.E. White, and then sixteen weeks together while he goes to an enlisted men's school here. - Capital.
