    Samuel E. Calderwood

    Samuel E. Calderwood, 85 of Topeka, died Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born Aug. 8, 1926 near Hoyt, the son of Henry and Sadie Gregg Calderwood. He attended school in Denison. After graduating from high school he served in the U.S. Army for two years.
    Sam worked as a meat cutter, first in Holton, then as market manager for King Soopers in Denver for ten years. He returned to Topeka and was the market manager and later manger of Falley's Meat Plant. He later owned and operated the A&W Drive Inn, a grocery store in Silver Lake, and then Calderwood's Grocery in Hoyt. Sam was a member of the Topeka Jayhawk Club, the American Legion at Rossville, Holton V.F.W., and the Masonic Lodge at Mayetta.
    He married Rosella Moormann on April 24, 1954 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Topeka. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Mick Calderwood and wife Susan, and Robert Calderwood, all of Topeka; two sisters, Betty Woodward and husband Irvin, and Emma Cress, all of Topeka; four grandchildren, Jordan, Sam, Riley and Drew; one great grandson, Evan; nieces, nephews and many friends. Sam was so very proud of the grandchildren's accomplishments.
    Funeral services were June 27 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt. Burial followed in the Prairie Home Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Midland Care, or the Hoyt Fire Department, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 280, Hoyt, 66440.
