    Martin-Cheek Couple Married in Holy Cross Church

    Joan L. Martin and Rick E. Cheek were united in marriage Saturday, September 1, 1979, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett. The Reverend James Slaughnessy officiated at the double ring ceremony.

    Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. John Martin, Emmett, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cheek, Rossville.

    Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a floor length gown of sheerganza and chantilly lace. The empire bodice had a Queen Anne neckline, full bishop sleeves with lace and lace motifs, wide cuffs with chantilly lace sheer pleating, a Soft A-line skirt with lace motifs and hemline of wife chantilly lace and double pleated ruffles, sweeping into a full chapel train. Her matching chantilly comelot cap and veil were lace-edged illusion. Her colonial bouquet was of red roses, pink miniature carnations, and pink daisies. With her grandmother’s rosary and great-great-grandmothers handkerchief.

    Maid of honor was Jane Martin, Topeka, sister of the bride. Bridesmaid was Lori Martin, Emmett, sister of the bride. They wore pink floor length gowns and carried nosegays.

    Bestman was David Ronnebaum, Delia. Groomsman was Jim Hin terweger, Rossville. Ushers were Russ Martin, Emmett, brother of the bride, and Dan Broxterman, Rossville. Servers were Bill Mulligan andShawn Moylan, both of Emmett.

    Tricia and Jennie Martin, Emmett, sisters of the bride, were junior at-tendants. They wore long dresses of pink and white gingham check with white lace trim; each carried a single pink rose for the mothers. Anna Martin, Maple Hill, cousin of the bride, attended the guest book, Lori Martin was the lector. Soloist was Donna Martin, Emmett, sister of the bride. She was accompained on the organ by Frances Brennan, St. Marys.

    A reception followed the ceremony. Helping at the reception were Pam Martin, Emmett, Cindy Martin, Carrollton, Ill., and Julie Hutley, Copeland. Opening gifts were Donna Martin and Judy Roth, Emmett.

    Mrs. Cheek is a graduate of St. Marys High School and is employed in the Shawnee County Treasurer’s office. Mr. Cheek is a graduate of Rossville High School and is employed by C. and S. Construction.

    The couple is residing at 721 Polk in Topeka.

    JARED M. CHEEK

    Jared Michael Cheek, 23, St. Marys, died Friday, September 16, 2005, at the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, IL, from injuries he received in an auto accident.

    Jared was born November 25, 1981, in Topeka, the son of Joan Martin and Rick Cheek. He had lived in the St. Marys and Emmett communities many years.

    He graduated from St. Marys High School in 2000. Jared received a bachelor’s degree from Benedictine College, Atchison after transferring from Baker University for his final year. At Baker he was a scholarship golfer, a member of the student senate and officer in the Sigma Phi Epsilon national fraternity. He was attending seminary in Mundelein, IL at the University of St. Mary of the Lake, where he was in his first year of Theology studying to become a priest for Archdiocese of Kansas in Kansas City.

    Jared was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 657 in St. Marys.

    Survivors include his parents, Joan and Brandon Magette, St Marys, and Rick Cheek, Belvue; two sisters, Emily Cheek, Manhattan, and Erin Magette Miller, Topeka; one brother, Lucas Cheek, St Marys; grandparents John and Agnes Martin, Emmett, Karen Cheek, Topeka, and Don and Jan McGranahan, Rossville.

    Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. He will lie in state after 3 p.m. Wednesday, at the church, where there will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary.
