    Patricia Mary Claussen

    Patricia Mary “Mary Pat” Claussen, 54, died February 26, 2000, at her home in rural Alma, of an aneurysm.

    She was born March 17, 1945, in Houston, TX, the daughter of Bart David and Mary Jane Pate Williams.

    She graduated from Shades Valley High School in Birmingham, AL in 1963 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in child development at the University of Houston, Houston, TX.

    Mary Pat was a member of the Alma United Methodist Church, Ladies Reading Club of Alma, General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Kansas, and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was a 4-H leader for many years, taught Vacation Bible School, and was secretary for the Wamego Walter P. Chrysler car show for many years. She founded the Paxico Junior High yearbook in 1985 and was a member of the Wamego Country Club for many years. She served on the Kansas Council of Women, See To Learn Council of Kansas, and she held several positions in the Kansas Foundation Visual Awareness, including serving as president twice. She was also the program chairman for the Heart of America Optometric Congress paraoptometric section.

    On August 26, 1966, she was united in marriage to Dr. Verne Claussen, Jr. in Houston, TX. The couple met at the University of Houston and have lived in Kansas since 1970. He survives.

    Other survivors include one daughter, Mary Chris Claussen, Nashville, TN; one son, Verne Claussen III and his wife, Kathleen, Manhattan; her mother, Mary Jane Williams, Birmingham, AL; a twin brother, Mike Williams and his wife Leigh, Birmingham, AL; her oldest brother, David Williams and his wife, Faye, Foley, AL; her brother, Jon Williams and his wife, Barbara, Montevallo, Al; and her aunts, Auzie and Vel Pate, Como, TX. Other surviving in-laws include her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Verne Sr. and Dorothy Claussen, Alma; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Taylor, Cincinnati, OH; a brother-in-law, Larry Claussen and his wife Ann, Albany, OR; and many nieces and nephews.

    The family met with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego. Her funeral service was at 11 a.m. Tuesday (this morning) at the funeral home, with the Rev. Buzz Lambrecht officiating. Burial was in the Wamego City Cemetery.

    Memorial have been designated to the United Methodist Church of Alma, or the See to Learn Council. Donations may be left at the funeral home.
