Edward M. “Ed” Leinwetter, 93, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, December 27,2017 at a Topeka care facility.
Ed was born February 3,1924 in rural Herndon, Kansas, the son of Mathias and Bertha (Allacher) Leinwetter.
He graduated from Herndon High School in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a P.O.W/lntern in Sweden for 4 months.
He graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1947. He owned and operated the Leinwetter Funeral Home in Atwood, Kansas. He was a very compassionate funeral director, providing support and comfort to thousands of families during his long career before retiring in 1985.
He was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Atwood and currently a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Topeka, the American Legion, V.F.W., and the Lions Club. In addition, he was a loyal Kansas City Royals fan and avidly followed KU and KSU sports. During retirement, he enjoyed living in Bella Vista, Arkansas, for several years.
Edward married Eileen Marie Thiele on February 3,1948 in Norton County, Kansas. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Larry Edward (Pam) Leinwetter of Topeka, Lynette Eileen Leinwetter Kanak of Atwood, Kansas, Dr. Myron (Tandy) Leinwetter of Rossville, Mark (Theresa) Leinwetter of Lenexa, Kansas; grandchildren, Dr. Lee (Laura) Leinwetter, Bryan (Melanie) Leinwetter, Linda (Ryan) Kanak Bolen, Lisa (Scott) McGrath, Benjamin and Ellen Leinwetter; great-grandchildren, Anderson, Adrianna, Cade and Evelyn Leinwetter, Tessa, Cy and Evan Bolen, Jaren and Lynsi Kanak; step-great-grandchildren, Benton, Lilian and Layci McGrath; his sister, Elaine Fikan of Atwood, Kansas, several Thiele in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Kanak; sister, Lorene Franklin; brothers-in-law George Franklin, LaVoe Fikan, Karl Thiele, Raymond Thiele; and sister-in-law, Karen Somers.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 1,2018 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Private inurnment will take place at Immanuel Cemetery in Herndon, Kansas, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Atwood Second Century Development Fund or Lutheran Hour Ministries in care of Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka, KS 66610.
