Michael J. Flannigan passed away June 30, 2020, in Manhattan, Kansas
He was born March 7, 1947, in Wamego, Kansas, the son of Thomas W. Flannigan Sr. and Lois Dempsey Flannigan. He grew up in the St. Marys community and attended schools there. He was active in the local Boy Scout Troop attaining the Eagle rank. He attended Kansas State University and received a degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1969.
Mike worked as an engineer for the Department of Defense at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, in California, where he worked on nuclear ships and submarines, and then for the Department of Energy at Argonne National Laboratory, in Illinois, where he oversaw the development of nuclear energy and safety. He retired in 2002.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas W. (Marilyn) Flannigan Jr. Survivors include two brothers: William J. (Wilma) Flannigan, St. Marys, Ks. and Richard D. (Susan)Flannigan Dover, Ks.
Mike was loved and admired by his niece and nephews: Matthew J. (Michelle) Flannigan, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Thomas J. Flannigan, Burlington, Ks., Brady M. (Kim) Flannigan, Shawnee, Ks, James C. (Lauren) Flannigan, Oklahoma City, Ok., Dempsey J. Flannigan, Roeland Park, Ks., and Jennifer C. (Daniel) Fallin, Manhattan, Ks. He relished his seven great-nieces and nephews.
Mike was always interested in learning. An avid reader and researcher, he was a wonderful conversationalist. He enjoyed traveling, genealogy, and nurturing the children in our family. |
