FIRE CLAIMS LIFE OF SMALL CHILD JUNE 2
Stephen Louis Evers, 18-month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Evers, Holts Summit, Mo., was burned to death following an explosion in the basement of the family home. The baby’s mother is the former Connie Eastman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ward, Delia, Ks. Mrs. Frances Marney, Rossville, is a maternal grandmother.
The explosion occurred about 3:30 p.m. Friday, when Evers was in the basement with his son working with a gasoline lawnmower, according to the State Highway Patrol. The lawnmower apparently exploded and flames from the gasoline spread quickly throughout the one-story frame dwelling.
Evers reportedly rushed out of the basement safely but then realized his little boy was trapped in the flames. He was badly burned after returning to rescue the child, according to his wife, who was upstairs at the time of the explosion.
Mrs. Evers drove the two in the family car to a mobile home sales office nearby, where an ambulance was called. The owner of the mobile home firm then notified the patrol and the New Bloomfield, Mo., volunteer fire department, which responded to the blaze about 45 minutes later.
The home was engulfed by flames shortly after the firemen arrived and all their possessions were lost in the fire.
Roger Evers, 30, was listed in critical condition Saturday at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia where he was taken.
Funeral services were held for the baby on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Dulle Funeral Home.
He was born September 24, 1971, at Jefferson City.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Robert Gene Evers of the home; his
maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ward, Delia; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Frances Marney, Rossville; his maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Iona Ward, Fair Dealing, Mo.; and his maternal great, great grandmother, Mrs. Rose Marney, Topeka.
The rosary was recited at 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Reverend John Buchanan officiated at the services. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
