Ernest and Martha Rezac of Silver Lake will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner today.

Ernest Rezac and Martha Wood were married Dec. 13,1952, in Rossville.

Their children are David and Vicki Rezac, Delia; Janice and Dennis Prior, Rossville; and the late Nancy Dickerson.

They have six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

The couple are semi-retired from farming.

Ernest and Martha Rezac, married 50 years, met when Martha was in first grade and Ernest was in third grade in the one-room Twin Rose School north of Rossville.

They dated during Martha’s junior and senior years in high school. Martha graduated in 1952, and they married on Dec. 13,1952. One month later, Ernest left to serve in Korea for two years. Since then, “not many nights did we ever spend apart,’’ Ernest said.

“We’ve had a really good marriage,” he said. “Except for the loss of our daughter, everything has gone pretty smoothly.”

Ernest attributes their happy marriage to hard work. “We’ve both farmed our whole lives, and she’s helped me a lot,” he said. “I think that’s probably it. Maybe that’s why we never fought — we were too tired to fight," he added with laughter.

Dickerson Couple Drown In Perry Lake

    (from Topeka “Capital-Journal”)

Nancy J. Rezac Dickerson, 30, and her husband, Clifford W. Dickerson, 31, both drowned in Perry Lake on Sunday, July 27, 1986.

Mrs. Dickerson’s body was discovered Sunday evening and Mr. Dickerson’s body was recovered early Tuesday in the Longview area at Perry Lake. An autopsy revealed Mrs. Dickerson drowned.

Dr. Angel Arafiles, Oskaloosa, deputy Jefferson County coroner, said Tuesday that Dickerson’s death had also been ruled a drowning and no autopsy was done.

Although no witness to the accident have been found, Jefferson County Sheriff Roy Dunnaway said authorities theorize the couple drowned after Mrs. Dickerson went wading in the lake with her dogs, slipped on some rocks and panicked.

Dunnaway said he believes Dickerson saw his wife struggling in the water, ran in to save her, got in trouble himself and drowned.

Dickerson, who was described by family members as a strong swimmer, was clad in cutoff jean shorts and tennis shoes when he was found. His wife who could not swim and was afraid of the water, was wearing a swimsuit, Dunnaway said.

Dunnaway said some moss-covered rocks on the north side of the cove where the woman’s body was found showed signs someone had slipped and then struggled against them in an attempt to right themselves.

“It appears to be just a panic-type situation,” Dunnaway said.

Rescue workers from the sheriff’s department, the Fish and Game Commission and the Corps of Engineers participated in the search for Mr. Dickerson’s body. Divers from Shawnee County and a bloodhound from the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing were also called in.

Mrs. Dickerson was the daughter of Ernest and Martha Rezac, Silver Lake. The couple was married June 14, 1986.

The obituaries appear in this issue.
