Thomas "Tom" I. Gideon, 76, St. Marys, was killed Friday, March 15, 1996, south of St. Marys in Wabaunsee County when a tree fell on him while he was clearing trees with a bulldozer.
He was born January 20, 1920, in Emmett, the son of Oscar and Mary Blanche Isnogle Gideon. He spent his early life in the Emmett community and attended Emmett schools. He was a farmer, and then lived in Topeka a year before he moved to St. Marys in 1946. He established Gideon Rock and Dirt Contractors, was a heavy equipment operator and did excavation work.
He was married to Ramona Klein October 19, 1940, in Marysville. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Thomas L. Gideon, Rossville, and Marvin W. Gideon, St. Marys; a daughter, Donna Brockish, St. Marys; a brother, Garland R. Gideon, Paxico; two sisters, Maureen Whaley, Paxico, and Barbara Luna, Topeka; and four grandchildren.
Relatives and friends met from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home. His fu¬neral service was at 10:00 Tuesday (this morning) at the St. Marys United Methodist Church. Interment was in Valley View Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the Thomas I. Gideon Memorial Fund, yet to be designated, and sent in care of the funeral home.
Accident Claims Life of Tom Gideon
Thomas “Tom” I. Gideon, St Marys, was clearing trees with his bulldozer Friday, March 15, when a huge tree fell on him, killing him. Gideon was working just south of the river in Wabaunsee County, when the accident occurred about 3:00 in the afternoon.
Street and utility crews from St Marys assisted in the removal of the tree; medical and law enforcement personnel from St. Marys, Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee Counties, responded to the emergency call to give assistance where needed.
