  | Obituary- Giles, Eugene Will to Work Kills

Those who read the recent story of the death of 16-year-old Jerry Giles at Rossville must have paused to ponder his fate. Jerry collapsed in a field, the victim, apparently, of a heart attack.

For the two weeks prior to his death, Jerry had worked like a beaver. He had labored at odd jobs in the mornings, farm work in the afternoons and at a service station at night. The boy's mother is a widow.

A physician attending the boy after his collapse said he believed overwork caused the heart attack.

The drive which kept young Jerry Giles busy at a series of jobs proved too much for his 16-year-old body. Yet the enterprise of a youth who wanted work, found it, and gave it everything he had, must be admired. It also makes one wonder about the idle 16-year-olds standing on the corner combing their ducktailed hair, doesn't it? |
