    William H. Griffiths
    William Henry Griffiths, 71, Topeka, died early Sunday morning, April 30, 1995, at his home. He was born May 8, 1923 at Corning, the son of Robert N. and Dona Alice Johnson Griffiths.

    Mr. Griffiths had worked for the City Parks and Public Properties Department from March 28, 1963 to August 16, 1982 and, at the time of his retirement, was the superintendent. He previously had owned a landscaping business in Topeka.

    He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from September 17, 1943 to February 19, 1946, and was discharged as a Tech Sergeant. He was a member of Philip Billard Post #1650, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans #3. He had received three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Medal, Victory Medal, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, and Marksman.

    Mr. Griffiths was a member of the Circleville Christian Church of Circleville, and was a past member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in North Topeka and the Highland Park Booster Club. Before World War II, he had played minor league baseball in Topeka.

    He was married to Lucille I. Baxter June 21, 1941, at Holton. She survives.

    Other survivors include four sons, William Birkett “Birky” Griffiths, Delia, Danny Lawrence Griffiths, Tecumseh, Billy “Lu” Griffiths, Holton, and Henry “Gede” Frost, Topeka; three daughters, Judy May Hall, Delia, and Dona Ilene Hartzell and Dana Irene Gunn, both of Topeka; 18 grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren.

    He will lie in state after 8:00 Tuesday (this morning) at the Parker-Price Mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 this evening. His funeral service is at 2:00 Wednesday at the funeral chapel, with Dr. David L. Myers and the Rev. Richard Guilfoil officiating. Philip Billard Post #1650, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will conduct military graveside honors at Valencia Cemetery west of Topeka at Valencia Road and 1-70.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Oncology Department at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, 1500 S.W. Tenth, Topeka 66604-1353.
