Mr. and Mrs. Cowan were married November 26, 1925 at Emmett. They have lived in the Delia community all of their married life. They have 21 grandchildren.

Celebrate 60th Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. John Cowan, Rossville, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving at noon Sunday, December 8, 1985, at Sacred Heart Church, Delia. A dinner followed at the Centennial Building in St. Marys.
Hosting the occasion were their children: Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Phillips, Olathe; Mr. and Mrs. Loren Hammel, Manhattan; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Deiter, Maple Hill; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Steinbock, Topeka; and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Cowan, Rossville.

Loren and Laurita Hammel of Manhattan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass and renewal of their marriage vows and a reception Saturday at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan.
Reception hosts were their children and their spouses, Cathy and Ray Eads, Council Grove; Richard and Mary Hammel, Manhattan; and Dan Hammel, Bloomington, Ill. They have three grandchildren.
Loren Hammel and Laurita Cowan were married June 2,1951, at Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka.
Mr. Hammel retired in 1993 from Kansas Farm Bureau in information systems after 30 years of service.
Mrs. Hammel retired in 1989 from Manhattan High School as a secretary in the school library after 23 years of service.

| Obituary- Hammel, Laurita Laurita J. Hammel
Laurita J. Hammel, age 78, of Manhattan, died Friday, May 23, 2008, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.
She was born on November 14, 1929, at the family home near Delia, Kansas, the daughter of John Thomas and Grace (Kelly) Cowan.
Mrs. Hammel attended the Goldenrod country school in the Washington Township in Jackson County and was a 1947 graduate of Delia High School. Following high school she moved to Topeka, Kansas where she went to work for Capper Publications from 1947 until 1952.
On June 2, 1951, she was united in marriage to Loren Hammel at the Assumption Church in Topeka, Kansas. They lived in Topeka and Wichita prior to moving to Manhattan in 1963. Mrs. Hammel was a Library Secretary for USD 383 at Manhattan High School for over 20 years, retiring in 1989.
She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and Circle 10 of the church altar society. She was also active with the Over 50 group at her church. Mrs. Hammel was an avid reader, wonderful cook and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren's events and activities.
Survivors include her husband, Loren Hammel, of the home; one daughter: Cathy Eads and her husband Ray of Council Grove, Kansas and two sons: Richard Hammel and his wife Mary of Manhattan and Daniel Hammel and his wife Beth Schlemper of Sylvania, Ohio. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Lauren Hammel, Katie Eads, Kirby Eads, Curtis fleeter and Grant Wright; three sisters: Elaine Phillips, Olathe, Kansas; Louise Deiter and her husband Howard, Maple Hill, Kansas; Ann Steinbock and her husband Joe, Topeka, Kansas; and one brother: Ronald Cowan and his wife Mary of Topeka, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A rosary service will be held 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. Visitation will follow until 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery at Elbo, east of Manhattan.
